counties, to your neighborhood, now it's complete coverage, it's wjz, maryland's news station. >> opening day is here. and the buzz is building at oriole park. the birds host the twins later today. wjz is your place to stay for all of opening day. a live look right now over camden yards and the ballpark where fans are gathering for the orioles first baseball game of the season. the gates are soon to open. good afternoon, i am don scott. it is opening day here and fans are gearing up for today's highly anticipated season open, wjz is live with complete coverage of the first game for you, mark viviano live on the field where the players will be in less than three hours but we begin with mary bubala and jessica kartalija who are at babe ruth plaza with all the excitement. you go girls. >> hello to after to everyone

at home. >> the fan are pouring in. the ceremony begins at 2:30. the gates open right now, people are going to start pouring in and the weather is gorgeous today. not as cold as we thought it was. >> no. we have been out here when it is rainy. it is gorge. >> gorgeous. >> it is everything you need. >> i have to be honest. i was wondering if they were going to have it altogether and they do. it looks awesome. take a look. just three hours until the first pitch and crews are hard at work getting the stadium ready for a sold out crowd. in celebration of camden yards 20th anniversary there is a new bar there. a better view of the game and a new area designed to enhance the fan experience. as vendors get ready for the rush one thing is certain, it is a beautiful day to play

ball. we checked out that new bar area and i have to tell you it looks like a club up there. they are hoping to use it for more obviously than just the games but for celebrations, for weddings, for what not out here, so it is great. >> it -- >> -- see it -- >> -- go up there -- >> -- right -- >> -- sold out, it is just excitement all day long but no more than on the field and that is where mark viviano is. mark. >> reporter: how you doing, guys? yeah, they -- the ballpark is the stage and the players are the stars and this is the first of 162 games and a long season for them but they will admit there is something special about the first one and something extra special for the guy who gets the honor of pitching that game and this year that belongs to jake arieta who just turned 26, this is his first opening day start

and the youngest starter since mike mussina in 1994. he represents the movement to grow young arms as the foundation of them becoming a winning team along with them. he is coming off elbow surgery, it has been -- even though he is young and it has been a short career it has been a long road and he appreciates this opportunity and this honor. >> the adversity you go through over the course of your career makes it all worth it. the rehab process that i had to go through this off-season. all the time and effort that i had to put in to get to where i am right now and to, you know, b be the opening day starter just makes everything you know a lot sweeter. you know, especially the way that it has panned out, so you know it feels really good. >> reporter: and when he grips that first pitch that is the ball he will be using. every oriole baseball this year

the homeowner, it is a special day. >> i have got just about the same thing to say, wjz has complete coverage all day for you, a special broadcast as marty said begins at 2:00 right here on wjz 13 and, of course the game will follow after thanchts in other news an investigation is underway following a fatal shooting in glen burnie. officers say they found one person shot to death inside a home yesterday. a second person was also inside the house when they got there. that person is currently being questioned. so far no charges have been filed. a child is recovering in the hospital this afternoon after getting hit by a car while riding a bike in north west baltimore. it happened last night. the child has been -- we are told the child is badly injured. officers also tell us they don't expect to file charges against the driver involved. the baltimore city fire department announces the permanent disbanding of several fire companies in the city. under a new plan three

companies will be disbanded and reassigned. the chief says response times will not be affected when it takes effect on july first. in annapolis the governor is set to mediate a compromise over a proposed income tax increase. both chambers are stuck on cuts that would affect the cost of teacher pensions. the senate bill sets the income base at 3000 dollars and would raise more than $475 million in taxes while the house version targets incomes of more than 100,000 and would raise around $192 million for the state. the labor department releases its jobs report and it appears employers are pulling back on hiring now. the economy added 120,000 new jobs but that is down from more than 200,000 in the previous months. the unemployment rate fail to its lowest since january of

and wjz special live coverage of opening day continues. you are looking live from sky chopper 13 where some of the players are starting to practice. but first news from other places. a texas police officer is dead after being shot on duty at a wal-mart in austin. police say the shooter is in custody, he was shot in the neck and pronounced dead at the scene. he was responding to a call about a drunk being disorderly inside the store. florida stand your ground self-defense law is coming under heavy fire following the shooting death of trayvon martin. the prosecutors say they would
