searching for clues, a fighter jet crashes into an apartment building. the latest on the extensive investigation. good evening, everyone. and thanks for joining us. i'm adam may. officials say it's a miracle nobody was killed when that navy jet slammed into a virginia beach neighborhood. tara mergener has the latest on the investigation. >> reporter: investigators are combing through the wreckage, looking for clues as to why an fa-18 crashed into an apartment complex in virginia beach. >> we'll find out what happened. and we'll fix whatever went wrong. >> reporter: on friday, the navy jet suffered what official call a catastrophic malfunction. witnesses claim they saw the plane dumping fuel.

the student pilot and instructor on board ejected from the aircraft just before it crashed. both survived. so did five others, injured on the ground. dozens of apartments were damaged and or destroyed. >> we need to watch our apartment building go up in flames and everything collapsed. >> reporter: including the homes of newlyweds, tiffany and daniel beal, who say they have lost everything. >> that's our first place that we had together. and it's just all gone. watching it all go down, it hurts. >> reporter: navy officials say it will take weeks to find out the cause of the crash. they're picking up parts of the plane, scattered in the debris and plan to review digital recordings. we will not rush to judgment. we will get everything down, examine it carefully, find out exactly what happened. and then we'll share that information with the mayor and all of the other appropriate people when we have it ready to go. >> reporter: on saturday, many lined up to file insurance claims. in spite of the loss, some are feeling lucky. >> god must have been with us. >> as residents pick up the pieces, investigators say they're grateful everyone has

been accounted for. in virginia beach, tara mergener, wjz eyewitness news. >> and officials say that jet was part of a training squadron at naval air station oceana. it crashed about two miles from the runway. back in baltimore county tonight, a woman is recovering after being rescued from a fire by her neighbor. these are pictures a viewer sent us there the scene in the 200 block. a fire broke out in a home there, just after 5:30 tonight. the fire then quickly spread to three other homes. the woman who was rescued is expected to be okay. and luckily, no one else was hurt. there is still no word yet on the cause of that fire. and flames engulf a historic landmark that is dedicated to helping those in need in carroll county. more than 100 crews responded to this big fire in westminster. wjz has more tonight. weijia jiang has more on what they're trying to rebuild. weijia? >> reporter: the amount of debris left over is devastating. about a half million dollars

worth. now the entire community is pulling together to clean up. >> reporter: it only took a few hours for a fire to demolish a carroll county landmark. >> the monitor was engulfed in flames. it was a big fire ball. as i walked closer and seen it, it was just gut-wrenching. >> reporter: because the century old barn, now reduced to rubble, was also a vital piece of the present. it helped donations for the westminster rescue mission for men. and a thrift store that raised money to operate the shelter. but the flames, which broke out around 9:45 friday, ripped through the building and caused the roof to collapse. >> it had fallen into the foundation. it was just continuing to burn. and at that point, there's really not a whole lot that we could do to salvage stuff. >> reporter: the barn not only helped the men at the mission. but the retch new collected went toward food boxes for families across carroll county, as well as vouchers for clothing and furniture. >> i've got my walker. i've got a lot. yeah, it's a shame. we have a long list of people

our website, wjz.com. an investigation is under way tonight into a deadly shooting in west baltimore. it happened just after 3:00 this afternoon. police just told us that 37- year-old jermaine sherwin was found shot in the head. and he later died at the hospital. right now, police are looking for two suspects in the shooting. and police are still searching for suspects in another shooting. this one in west baltimore, left two men hurt. it happened yesterday on north avenue. police say a 42-year-old man was shot in the back. and a 28-year-old man was shot several times. those victims are both in the hospital. anyone with information on either of the shootings is asked to call baltimore city blis. a gunman shoots five people. and now, tonight, residents in tulsa, oklahoma are on edge. duarte geraldino reports for wjz that federal investigators are now helping in the search for the suspect. >> reporter: it's being called operation random shooter. all five victims were taking walks when they were shot. three are dead. investigators don't believe any of them knew each other. >> that is scary if they're

randomly running around. because they can do it at any time. >> reporter: police are now teaming up with the fbi and the u.s. marshal's service. they'll be canvassing this historically african american section of tulsa. looking for a suspect about whom they know very little. >> we just know it's a white male in a white pickup truck. that's the extent of what we know. we are fortunate enough to know we have one victim who survived. >> all of the victims were black and were shot within three miles of each other. just after 3:00 a.m., a woman was found in the street. she died in the hospital. three minutes later, a pair of men were shot but survived. 50 minutes after that, another man was found shot dead in the street. hours later, police found a dead man shot in the chest in a funeral home parking lot. >> this is going to be a difficult investigation, identifying a lone wolf suspect who acted independently. >> district one councilman jack henderson is encouraging his constituents to speak up. >> you need to put aside

whatever you think about your inability to be able to talk to the police department. we're working together. >> reporter: investigators say it's too early to say whether this is a hate crime. but they're not ruling it out. duarte geraldino, wjz eyewitness news. >> right now, police are waiting for the results of forensic tests to confirm that all of those shootings are definitely linked. back in maryland, a pet duck is found stabbed to death in a park in western maryland. now, the city of frostburg says they've caught the person who committed the crime. according to our media partner at the baltimore sun, authorities say a 14-year-old boy is responsible for stabbing that duck to death. and now he's facing charges. the dead bird was found with this distinctive knife in his back. it was one of four domesticated ducks living at the glendening pond. a group of office buildings on high alert. tonight, gigi barnett explains that detectives have been searching for the suspects now for months. >> reporter: baltimore county

police say this man enters office buildings and then burgarrizes several suites. detectives have been searching for him since january. >> we were assigned to one burglary and found we have four or five businesses that had been targeted. >> reporter: investigators say he strikes at night, stealing as much as he can cart out. >> postage stamps, money, office supplies, electronic equipment. >> reporter: he's even swiped food from the kitchen areas if these office buildings. police say since december, he's hit buildings in cockeysville and the franklins area. the latest came this past week at this medical building in catonsville. >> on april 3rd, between the hours of midnight and 12:40 a.m., we discovered tathree businesses had been targeted. an office bell in the 400 block of frederick road. >> reporter: lines were drawn at the catonsville complex. and several officers sai they recently installed new office equipment. police say that's wise because the suspects strike when nobody is there. no reports of confrontation.

he simply breaks into the business when no one is there. >> now, police are offering a $2,000 reward for information that puts their suspect behind bars. in baltimore county, i'm gigi barnett, wjz eyewitness news. >> and police say the suspect usually breaks a window or a dor to get -- door to get nz inside those businesses. part of the mystery is over. the first of three mega millions jackpot winners comes forward. but still not that mysterious ticket holder here in maryland. >> now, the news that all of us have been waiting for. we have our winner. >> and that winner is in kansas and wants to remain anonymous. they will take their share of that record $656 million jackpot in a lump sum that's worth about $110 million after taxes. the maryland lottery says still no winner here, despite a week's worth of rumors and all kinds of rumors about that ticket. average price for a gallon of gas in maryland is up to $4.

cliff. three children are thought to be among the dead. at least 40 people are recovering in hospitals tonight. take a look at this armored car that is literally hanging off the edge in california. it happened when the driver lost control, after swerving to avoid a motorcycle. the truck that was filled with cash smashed with a concrete guardrail. then it was sent teetering over the bridge. gas was leaking down onto the street below. and authorities had to shut down the highway. fortunately, that driver was not seriously hurt. well, this creature is not your average pet. in iowa, that is. police were arrested there after this alligator was found in a home in des moines. when police arrived at the home, they found a three-not- long gator at the tank. but it's illegal to have exotic animals in iowa. private investigators are holding that animal in custody tonight other trying to fut on what to do with this. the pope celebrates a mass on this saturday, the day before easter. around the theme of darkness and light and repeated that man is often in awe of technology rather than god. tomorrow, the pope is set to deliver a morning mass in st. peter's square that is set to be at the balcony of st. peter's bal silica. thomas kinkade has died at the age of 54, reportedly of natural causes. he is known to be the painter of light. it is said to be in one out of every 20 homes in the u.s. kincade was known for painting country scenes with a pretty heavy focus on home, hearth and church. even great pictures of disney you can see there. he is survived by a wife and four children. rankings are out. and two took the top and bottom spots when it comes to become the healthiest. >> these druid hill park joggers might be surprised to know, they're pounding the pavement in the state's

unhealthiest area. >> it does not surprise me at all. >> according to the 2012 health ranking, at number 24, baltimore is the unhealthiest city in maryland. allegheny and dorchester county rounded out the top three. >> i'm surprised we're listed as the most unhealthiest city. >> howard county took the top spot, with montgomery county and queen anne's, close behind. >> they're looking at a combination of factors on, including socioeconomic. >> reporter: they looked at the access to healthcare, number of premature births, healthy food options and unhealthy things like smoking. they also have a plan but say unemployment and poverty can hold things back. >> these social determinants of health are what make it challenging, more challenging in baltimore city, than let's say in howard county, to really

make significant in roads in improving health outcomes. >> reporter: despite the rankings, many people told us they do feel healthwise, baltimore city is headed in the right direction. >> that was monique griego reporting. the county rankings were done by the university of wisconsin health institute and the robert wood johnson foundation. if you're watching your waistline, turns out chocolate could be the answer. maybe in moderation, at least. experts are claiming that a regular diet of chocolate can help you stay slim. the new research in the archives of internal medicine, found that people whoate chocolate more frequently, had less body fat. doctors say eating a small amount may prevent people from overindulging. bernadette was living by that philosophy tonight. >> yes. >> breaking into the easter candy, i saw. >> well, of course. it's that time of year. >> and you said you were going to the car to bring me back one. and you never showed up. >> i am sorry.

i will have some for you tomorrow. i promise. and i'll bring you peanut butter cups, too. >> i'll wait for that. weatherwise. just a beautiful one. we've had an amazing stretch. we'll take you back through today. we tapped out in the mid-60s. even with that wind coming out of the north, above average, at 65 degrees. now, it was a cold start to the day. and it's going to be a cold one again tonight. we're hanging on to 50 right now. 40s out in the mountains. but notice the dew point. it is way down. and because of that, in the clear skies and the winds dying down, these temperatures are really going to drop overnight. this point, though, it's still pretty comfortable outside. we still have freeze warnings in effect for western parts of the state. but also had red flag warnings in effect. they will be in effect earlier today. and will be in the afternoon again tomorrow. because of the dry wind in place. and these winds pick up during the day. again tomorrow, there's a high- fire threat. even for some of these controlled burns, it is really not the best time to do this.

because we are down a few inches already on the year. for the month, it's so early into this month that already three-quarters of an inch, we're down in the rainfall bucket. this is what we're looking at for that fire threat. but the thing is, it is going to be beautiful with sunshine out there. for your easter festivities. here's the next front coming our way. it's going to die out in that dry air. so maybe just a couple of clouds as it passes through. then that front gets out of here. and another follows. this second one will start to change things a little bit. coming down from the north. it's going to have more moisture with it. we'll see the chance for a few showers later monday. better chance monday, tuesday, and wednesday. while that's happening. it's going to bring cooler air. down on the waters, with the winds picking up. we also have small craft advisories that go into effect in the afternoon. tonight, mainly clear. seasonably chilly out there. tomorrow, we get up to 70 degrees. breezy, warm. just a few patchy clouds. that's about it. then the temperatures start coming down. monday, still 65 degrees. but we're down in the 50s for

some firefighters in annapolis hop to the rescue. the crew found a bunny that was injured and tangled up in a fence. luckily, they managed to free that trapped little rabbit and nurse it back to health in the fire station. there you see the bunny in the middle. an animal rescue group has now been contacted. we'll be right,,,,,,
