morning, but there are reports of shelling in at least two towns today. yesterday the fighting spilled into lebanon and turkey. activists say more than 125 people have been killed in the past two days. we have the latest from washington. good morning. >> good morning, michelle. despite the deaths there's still hope for a cease-fire. according to the plan, syrian troops are supposed to pull out today in preparation for a full cease-fire on thursday. government forces are supposed to withdraw from syrian cities today but activists claim this city of burning buildings and homes show the syrian forces were still engaged battle on monday, hours before the deadline. >> not only has the violence not ray abated, it has been worse in recent days. >> reporter: yesterday the violence spilled over the border into lebanon and turkey. people were seen running from the border as a gun battle broke

out near a refugee camp. at least two people died in the attack. this man lives in turkey and showed us bullet holes in the walls of his home. he says our house was also hit. we are not safe here. according to the peace plan, kofi annan said they must pull troops out of cities and begin a cease-fire within 48 hours. >> it's done some moving around with the tanks and artillery, but only so they could use them in other places. >> reporter: president obama is watching today's developments closely. a white house official says they'll meet to discuss what the next move will be if today's deadline is not met. >> we certainly have seen no signs yet of the assad regime abiding by its commitments, which is obviously quite unfortunate. >> reporter: the peace plan appeared to break down over the weekend when president assad demanded rebels agree in writing they would lay down their weapons.

opposition groups say they would obey the cease-fire if the government would stop fighting. michelle? >> thank you. in afghanistan, a suicide bomber killed at least nine people and wounded 21. it happened this morning in the province in the western part of the country. officials say the bomber attacked a crowd of people waiting outside a building. civilians and police are among the casualties. several airlines say they're going to stop flying over north korea. the north says it is ready to launch a satellite later this week so, the airlines have decided to temporarily reroute about 20 flights. the u.s. objects to the launch, saying it's a test to show north korea has a rocket capable of carrying a nuclear warhead as far as the hawaiian islands and alaska. back here in the u.s. we just wrapped up what turned out

to be the warmest year on record. according to noaa, the average temp in march was 8.6 degrees above norm and and 6 degrees higher than average for the first three months of the year. overall more than 15,000 temperature records were set in march, and at least one record-high temp was registered in all 50 states. but march wasn't just warm. it was among the driest on record, and those conditions may have helped set off some wild weather events around the country monday. an outbreak of brushfires stretched from florida -- >> that's the biggest fire i've ever seen in my life, definitely. >> -- to new england. >> it was ash and soot and kind of raining ashes. >> the fires were fueled by low humidity, tropical strength wind gusts and dry conditions. on new york's long island, two brushfires emerged and ended up destroying three buildings and forcing some neighbors to

evacuate. >> it looked like the bad movie "dante's peak." when fire balls were flying in the air at you. i tell you it was like over 100 feet tall. it's like you see in the movies. until you're there, you think, wow, i think i'm in trouble, i'd better get the hell out of here. >> this fire shut down a busy commuter system just as the evening rush hour was beginning. officials in new jersey say it could consume a thousand acres before it's out, and while it hasn't destroyed any structures, it came close to some homes. >> i'm just worried to death. i make sure we have our evacuation plan. it's frightening because you don't know. >> the fires weren't just limited to the east coast. a brushfire in northern minnesota scorched more than 1,400 acres and prompted the national guard to battle the flames. it the plains it wasn't fire but severe weather that had some people on edge. at least two people were injured when a violent hailstorm and at least two tornadoes struck oklahoma.

the threat of severe weather in the nation's midsection could increase later in the week. meanwhile conditions in the northeast are expected to pull off while the southeast could see freezing temperatures by thursday. police in tulsa, oklahoma, say the two men accused of going on a deadly shooting rampage have confessed. 19-year-old jake england and 32-year-old alvin watts were in court yesterday. bail was set at $9 million apiece. police documents say the suspects admit that on friday they shot five people. all the victims were black. three were killed, two wounded. authorities plan to charge england and watts with first-degree murder. now to the shooting death of trayvon martin. the gunman george zimmerman has set up a website. on it he says he can't get any work and is asking for donations to help pay for his legal

defense and living expenses. the prosecutor said yesterday she'll not take the case to a grand jury, but that does not mean zimmerman won't be charged with the killing of martin. susan mcginnis has more. >> reporter: student protesters blocked the entrance to the sanford police department monday. their goal, shut it down and pressure special prosecutor angela corey to arrest george zimmerman for the shooting death of trayvon martin. >> she says the process will continue and justice is going to be served, but we're here to fight for justice, and until it is, we're still here. >> reporter: it means the state will not pursue a first-degree murder charge. corey says she needs more time. >> i think if the public would be patient, they would understand that this is a very complicated area of the law and we're going make sure the public also has the answers that they need. >> reporter: zimmerman's attorney says the 28-year-old fired in self-defense.

an eye out for unanticipated risk of the financial system. he said the system is far from fully recovered from the effects of the crisis. and there's a new king of the broadway box office. this weekend's disney "the lion king" moved ahead of "phantom of the opera" as the all-time highest growing show. with his mouth. >> reporter: the student reacts as the bus is heading for the church. >> i take action. i leap off my chair, grab the wheel, turn the wheel to the right off the road, and take the keys out of the ignition, and the bus started slowing down. >> reporter: watch the video again as the bus approaches the middle lake school after 8:00 this morning. the driver began showing signs something was wrong. he was coughing and shifting in his seat. suddenly his eyed rolled back in his head, and he fell over. the boy pulled the keys from the ignition. johnny wood who was trained in cpr ran up to help. >> i ran up trying to do chest compressions, but his eyes were rolling back and i could tell it was getting harder for him to breathe. >> reporter: other students called 911 as a teacher hopped onboard to help out. they were glad they kept cool
