facing murder charges. >> george zimmerman prepares to make his first court appearance. >> hello again, i am jessica kartalija. >> i am don scott. >> here is what people are talking about today. the neighborhood watch volunteer accused of gunning down an unarmed florida teen is scheduled for his first court appearance. george zimmerman is arrested and charged in the shooting death of trayvon martin, randall pinkston has the latest. >> reporter: george zimmerman is locked up in jail charged with the murder of trayvon martin. this is our first look at him since the night of the shooting more than six weeks ago. his new lawyer hopes the judge will release his client on bail. >> i hope to get him out. i need him out for my purposes in preparing his defense. >> he claims he shot trayvon martin in self-defense after getting into a fight with the

up armed black teenager. his family is relieved he is finally charged with second- degree murder. >> we just want someone to know that if you shoot someone that is unarmed that you should be arrested. >> now we have to turn our attention to trying to get him to stay where he is at. >> protesters took to the streets in sanford and in cities across the nation for weeks but the special prosecutor insists they did not influence her decision. >> we prosecute based on the facts of any given case as well as the laws of the state of florida. ♪ [ music ] >> local respects celebrated at the sanford church where rallies for martin began. >> we got victory and hey, like it is peace and justice after all. >> zimmerman's attorney says his client acted within the stand your ground law. the florida statute allows people to use deadly force in a fight. in sanford, florida, randall pinkston, wjz eyewitness news. >> if found guilty zimmerman faces life in prison.

>> in a very different high profile case jury selection begins today in the criminal trial of john edwards. he arrived at a court in greensboro north carolina just a north time ago. he is charged with violating campaign finance law, accused of using campaign money to silence his pregnant mistress during his bid for the white house in 2008. he faces 30 years in prison if convicted. he denies any wrongdoing. >> opening arguments begin in the trial of man accused of hitting two teens in a hit-and- run case. derek valcourt has the latest. >> reporter: hi jessica, there were two people in the car that struck those teenagers on r that night. he says she was driving. she says he was driving. now it is all up to a jury to decide who is telling the truth. >> it has been months since they were killed by a hit-and-

run driver while crossing martin luther king and pratt streets for their grieving mothers. the start of this trial is filled with emotion. >> anxiety, some relief that we are finally here at this point, knowing that justice will be served and -- >> the justice they want is a guilty verdict for 28-year-old reuben dunn, he admits he was one of two people in the car that struck the girls but he says it was his girlfriend kendra miles that was driving and failed to stop but under a plea deal she will testify saying he was driving drunk that night. >> ruben dunn should have never been driving. >> they believe he was driving and she changed seats. >> whether he was speeding or had a few beers whatever it was he should not have done it.

>> he faces several charges. >> dunn faces the possibility of up to 30 years in prison if convicted on all charges. >> a shooting in baltimore is the reason a man is in critical condition. the man was shot multiple times, so far his name has not been released and detectives say they have no idea as to a motive or suspect at this time. >> calls for a special session to rework the budget continue but the governor isn't giving in. ron matz is live in the newsroom with what he is saying today. >> governor o'malley says he won't hold a special session until legislators agree on a plan to fix the budget. state lawmakers have to avoid more than 5 billion dollars in cuts, cuts were made in order to balance the budget. a special session would have to be held before the new budget takes effect on july the first.

in syria government forces did stop shelling this morning and it appears this united nations cease-fire is on but there are reports of scattered violence and two people are dead. reports say a soldier was killed when a roadside bomb exploded near a troop bus and a man was killed by syrian troops. the fighting has claimed more than 9000 lives. >> a bus collides with a head on truck or collides head on with a truck in china killing at least two dozen people. authorities have not yet disclosed the number of passengers on board the vehicles. the cause of that crash is under investigation. north korea is expected to launch a long-range rocket as soon as today. it was injected with fuel yesterday. north korea says it is simply sending a satellite into space but critics argue they are violating a united nations bap on missile activity and work on its nuclear program. >> the number of people seeking unemployment benefits in this country is once again on the

police involved accident in anne arundel county. sky eye chopper 13 is over the scene. captain mike has more. >> reporter: hello we are indeed in kroft ton, where police were folic this vehicle southbound on route 3 when it tried to flee and ran into several police cars. it actually wrecked the scene. you can see anne arundel county police nearby. three people we know were transported to local area hospitals, baltimore western medical center. at this point it is not clear what they wanted this car for but and arundel county police have route three closed south of of the boulevard in the crofton area of anne arundel county. there are detours. expect delays if you are trying to get south towards kroftton from the route 97 area. back to you on tv hill. >> thank you, captain mike.

>> let's go straight over to the first warning weather center and meteorologist tim williams. >> high pressure is in control. just talking to matter about how comfortable it is outside. just a gorgeous day shaping up. a few concerns. of of course, we have been talking about the fire concerns and with high pressure a freeze warning in effect for allegheny county, a freeze watch in effect through 9:00 a.m. tomorrow morning because of the colder air then things really kick in to almost summer mode. 55 degrees right now at bwi marshal, a north-northwesterly wind at 12, 30.13 in the barometer, 43 oakland, 55 on the shore and elkton, 52 haggerstown. that breeze gusting up to 20 miles an hour still a delightful afternoon and with the sun out there it is even more comfortable. the low that brought us just a trace of rain yesterday is now moving on out of here.
