conflict of interest. two days after george zimmerman's arrest, the judge may be stepping down. i'm kai jackson. mary is off. here's what people are talking about. attorneys in the george zimmerman, trayvon martin case meet again in court. randall pinks ton reports. >> reporter: florida ministers are asking for unity, now that george zimmerman is behind bars for shooting trayvon martin to death. >> people in the community feel as though the process of justice is working. reconciliation and healing is fostered out of an environment where there is repentance and forgiveness. >> reporter: it could be months before zimmerman goes on try. -- trial. the 28-year-old said he shot martin in self-defense. >> he defer deserves a bond.

there. >> reporter: and a surprise status hearing, lawyers questioned whether the judge overseeing the second-degree murder case may have a conflict of interest. her husband works with an attorney who had contact with zimmerman. >> reporter: authorities are revealing new details about george zimmerman's jail quarters, where he's being held in isolation because of concerns about his safety. >> reporter: he's being held in a sketch-square-foot cell. he can't watch tv but has access to the jail's commissary. this receipt shows he's already spent $80 on incidentals and playing cards. zimmerman is expected to plead not guilty when he's going to be arraigned. >> zimmerman's attorney says he hasn't decided if he'll ask for a change of venue. a baltimore jury takes just minutes to agree on a verdict in the hit-and-run deaths of two teens. gigi barnett is live in the

newsroom with more on the decision in the complicated case. gigi? >> reporter: well, kai, the judge found 28-year-old rubin dunne not guilty in the crash that killed two teenage girls. the girls were hit as they crossed at martin luther king boulevard and pratt street. police arrested rubin dunne. dunne's girlfriend, kendra miles, took the stand and said she was driving but she switched seats with him because he was drunk. the defense said it was impossible to tell for sure which person was behind the wheel. >> reporter: they're still children. >> they're still children. and they were good kids. and they will not die in vain. and believe me, i like both of them and i wish i could bring them back. but it's over. the city of baltimore spoke. >> he was relieved. he thanked god. and then there was some crying

later on. you have to realize, he understands what happened in this case. he feels for that family, too. but to take the blame for something he didn't do, that's not right. >> and kendra miles, the girlfriend, pleaded guilty to two counts of being an accessory after the fact and faces a suspended five-year sentence and probation for her testimony at trial. >> wjz is at the courthouse. we'll bring you new reaction to the verdict all new at 5:00 and 6:00. a short time ago, a maryland man pleads not guilty to supporting a terror group. former u.s. army soldier, craig baxom appeared in court. he is accused of leaving the u.s. for somalia. baxom was stopped in kenya and questioned by the fbi. he faces up to 15 years in prison if convicted. baxom joined the army in 2007 and spent time in iraq and south korea. it could be a traffic nightmare. in just hours, major repairs

will be spent. and it will force you to plan detours. weijia jiang has more on how long it will last. >> reporter: dpafn. city transportation officials are not mincing any words. they say if you're going to use the jfx, you're going to be stuck in traffic. so now is the time to make some other plans am. >> reporter: when emergency road work on the jfx starts friday evening, drivers can expect to stop. >> it can be treacherous. >> that's supposed to be the expressway, getting out of here. now you're cutting it down. pretty much, it's a regular street. >> each lane of intersection 83 will be shut down near the 29th street bridge, as crews work underground to fix pipes. >> we know there's a void under there. and if left unchecked, it's going to be a sinkhole. we don't want that to happen. >> wow. that's a long time. >> reporter: enough time public transportation officials say to figure out how to use the light

rail and metro. cars come every 8 to 10 minutes. >> you don't have to deal with traffic hassling. you don't have to deal with parking downtown. many of our properties have free parking. >> reporter: but if you have to brave the roads, the department of transportation urges you to use one of these nine alternate routes, including york road, charles street, park heights, perring parkway, harford road and bel air road. otherwise, gridlock may be impossible to avoid. >> it's going to be rough. but we got to manage if it's for the better. >> reporter: you probably won't see any construction for several weeks after the lanes close because crews have to get a good look at what they're working with. and even though this project is slated to last for about 6 to 8 weeks, they say it could take even longer. in northwest baltimore, weijia jiang, wjz eyewitness news. >> for a map of the alternate routes, go to wjz.com. a bad accident causes a traffic snarl in the whitemarsh area of baltimore county.

sky eye chopper 13 is over i- 95, near the cowattan avenue overpass. four vehicles were involved. two people were trapped. you can see that one vehicle is on its side. rescuers managed to get everyone out of the wreckage. traffic was backed up for an hour. in timonium, another traffic accident causes problems on 695. a trailer jackknifed. the truck leaked some hydraulic fluid. so a hazmat team was called in to contain it. no one was hurt. the mess was cleaned up and the beltway reopened. international embarrassment. north korea's launch of a multistage rocket ends in failure, seconds after takeoff. danielle nottingham reports for wjz. the united states is issuing a warning to the government. >> the united nation security council is meeting behind closed doors to decide what actions to take against north korea, after its failed rocket launch. >> members of the security

council deplored this launch, which is in violation of security council resolutions, 17, 18, and 1784. >> north korean officials launched the long-range rocket early friday to commemorate the birthday of the country's founder, kim ilsung. but the rocket survived only a hundred seconds, breaking up over the yellow sea. north korea said it was attempting to send a satellite into orbit. but many in the international community believe the launch was actually a test of missile technology. experts say north korea could use the same type of rocket to strike the u.s. and other targets. >> reporter: the obama administration called the launch provocative and is suspending its food aid program for north korea. >> we don't feel that we can frankly trust the north koreans, that this will end up in appropriate hands. >> reporter: while critics call it an embarrassing blow for new

definitely the difference in what it feels like today. with less winds, more sun. definitely feels warmer. just go out to your car after it has been closed up a little while this afternoon to see the difference the sun makes. 60 in ocean city. 54 in oakland. it is just a tad bit warmer than this time yesterday. we're now at 66 -- or at six degrees warmer. we were just around 69 degrees this time yesterday. a little warmer, especially out nearer well -- cumberland and oakland. we continue with this high pressure to the bermuda high. we talk about it moving off the coast and to the atlantic. it's a place where we will allow very, very warm air to move into the region the next few days. just how warm will it get? we'll have the answer coming up in your complete updated first warning forecast. let's check in on the roads with kristy breslin at traffic control. >> hi, kai. hi, everyone. as we said, it's been a mess out there for northbound 95. if you are traveling northbound 95, plenty of delays there from

dundalk avenue to little gun powder falls bridge. best way to take that would be bel air road. and southbound 95, also heavy there, as you make your approach to whitemarsh boulevard. on the north side inner loop, stop and go there, from park heights avenue to falls road. west side inner loop, another 20 minutes from frederick to security boulevard. and the west side outer loop, seeing some delays there from 795 to baltimore national pike. we also have some backing 70 westbound. that's from 29 over to marriottsville road. you can expect at least 15 minutes to get through that mess. accidents include martin boulevard at win delack. and also hook lane at green tree. let's take a live look. as you can see, quite a mess there. that's a look at 95, all due to the earlier accident. so as we said, the delay stretches from dundalk avenue to little gun powder falls bridge. this traffic report is brought to you by bill's carpet, hard wood and laminate, too. call them at 1-877-75-bills.

three new york city workers are back on the ground, after a daring high-rise rescue. the scaffolding broke on the 15th floor of a building in manhattan. witnesses say rescue crews pulled them to safety through the 17th floor windows. it's not known what caused the scaffolding to fall. no one was hurt. new video is released from the night six marquette university basketball players get into a fight at a milwaukee club. the video shows part of that scuffle. it also shows bouncers, escorting several people out and a man collapsing. a milwaukee police report says 30 individuals were fighting with members of the basketball team that night. citations were issued to the players for being underaged at a club.

stocks fell after two days of gains. china's economy slowed last quarter. and that overshadowed better- than-expected profits from jp morgan chase and wells fargo. more people are paying home loans on time. and more people are taking advantage of low interest rates to refinance. crude oil fell near $103 a barrel on news that the economy grew at the slowest pace in three years. china is the world's second largest consumer of crude after the u.s. apple is responding to a lawsuit brought by the government that they raised prices of e-books. apple said its entry into e- books broke up what it called amazon's monopoly over the publishing industry. general motors said it would stop selling the pickup truck next year, after the company sold only 20,000 of the vehicles. the chevy avalanche is made at a factory in mexico, which also

wow. well, it's been a little on the

cool side. pretty, but tim, you said we're really in for quite a weekend, right? >> quite a weekend. you know, we've just had some snow showers in parts of the area, just a few days ago. we had some hail and all kinds of -- all of those kinds of problems that you might really think more winter. then we kind of transition into spring for a few days. and now summer. looks like it's right around the corner. we're going to be starting with summer-like temperatures here over the next day or so. and they say -- stay with us. average high is 64 degrees. we're above that right now. we're not looking back. 65 right now. temperature at bwi marshall. 25. the air is very dry, with relative humidity, at 21%. winds are currently from the west. and this is the shift we have been talking about. we've had north winds coming in, bringing cooler air in. shift to the west. and eventually, southwest. it's going to start ushering in very, very warm air over the next few days. right now, temperatures are at 58 degrees in oakland.

60 on the shore. 61 in patuxent river. around the immediate metro area, we have 61. we have anap will onis at -- annapolis at 60. and kent island. winds out of the west sustained around 10 miles per hour, right around that for much of the area, at bwi marshall. a bit of a northwest wind toward easton. and a light breeze around much of the region, bringing in very dry air. hardly any clouds out there. much fewer cloud cover -- or much less cloud cover, i should say, than yesterday, around this time. so we have no real problems with the sun heating us up. nothing is blocking it out. with the wind chipping to the west and southwest, going to start tapping into warmer air that is going to be out ahead of a front. it's really not going to mean too much to us. we have warm air moving into the region that's going to be here. starting tomorrow, we'll be in the 70s. we'll be in the 80s next few days. close to 90 degrees. and we will have with that shift, warm air. dew points going up. moisture levels going up.

it's 4:30. 65 degrees and mostly sunny. hello, everyone. thanks for staying with eyewitness news. i'm vic carter. here's what people are talking about. protestors pour into the streets of syria. activists say government forces killed three demonstrators today, despite the demand to stop the violence. monica villa miczar has more for wjz. >> reporter: thousands of

prodemocracy demonstrators chanted, declaring a revolution for all syrians. they rallied across the country, trusting the cease- fire would keep them safe. but activists say government security forces are still on the attack and killed several protestors. this amateur video claims to show heavy gunfire in the rebel strong hold of holmes. the united nations says a team of about a dozen unarmed observers is on standby to help enforce the cease-fire. >> we are under no illusion here that we have come to the end of this conflict. this is only the beginning. >> reporter: u.n. officials say they need urgent humanitarian aid. he says, we do not believe president assad's lives. we do not believe he will silence the guns and set the people free.

the army still has tanks and soldiers in cities across the country, even though the peaceland requires them to pull out. >> the u.n. envoy for syria, kofi annan says overall, the cease-fire has been respected, but despite outbursts of violence. a california deputy serving an eviction notice. >> soon after this shooting, the deputy hits a suspect at a 10-hour standoff with police and ended with a fierce gun battle. officials say the fire started when police threw flash grenades and tear gas. earlier, the suspect shot him as he tried to evict his modesto home. they expect to find the body of the suspect in the home. >> deputy peres was a 16-year veteran of the department. oklahoma prosecutors filed murder and hate charges in a crime against a man.

19-year-old jake england and has roommate, alvin watson confessed to shooting five african americans. prosecutors say england wanted to avenge his father's shooting by a black man two years ago. a new jersey man held a year ago, cory booker ran into a home to save his friend's life. >> reporter: an embrace of relief shared by two people who had faced fire and survived it. mayor booker, his hand wrapped in gauze, protecting second- degree burns. the woman identified herself as the fire victim's sister, whose hospitalized burns on her bark. >> just second-degree burns. and you know, it was just -- thank god. thank god. thank god that everybody is okay. >> reporter: detective alex rodriguez was outside the mayor's home, waiting for the mayor to return. he said he spotted the flames on the second floor, about one

minute before the mayor pulled up. >> the mayor happened to pull up at that time. he ran in and without thinking for his own safety, ran upstairs and assisted in rescuing the young lady that was in the front room here. >> reporter: your job is to protect the mayor. and you see him rupping into a -- running into a burning building. >> absolutely. >> what is going through your mind. >> protect the mayor here. >> for the mayor and his security crew coming down the smoke and flames, must have been incredibly intense. >> when you get up here to the second floor and see the amount of damage, you really get an idea of what the mayor and security detail had to go through just to get that woman out of here. >> there was smoke, flames and not much time. >> i believe pulling the young lady out, the fire from the kitchen, he burned his hand, trying to pull the lady out. >> reporter: the residents of the two apartments are believed to all be members of the same family.

they all made it out alive. one firefighter told security, five more minutes, there could be nothing left. instead, there's this. a shared moment from neighbor to neighbor. >> the mayor who was coughing heavily after the rescue, was treated at a hospital for smoke inhalation and second-degree burns. president obama revealed his income tax returns. the president and first lady brought in more than $178,000. most of that was from salary and the other from book sales. they donated to two charities. the president is now calling on mitt romney to release his returns. good news for drivers. gas prices are on their way down. triple a reports, the average for a gallon of regular fell 6/10ths of a cent. that's below the record high set in july 2008. midgrade is at $4.04, while

premium is $4.17 a gallon. here in maryland, we're currently paying $3.95 a gallon. that's down a penny from yesterday but up from last month, when we were shling out $3 -- shelling out $3.81 a gallon. irene is being retired from the list of storm names. the 2011 hurricane killed 49 people and caused more than $15 billion in damage across the eastern seaboard, including here in maryland. storm names are used every three years unless they cause considerable damage. irene will be replaced by i rememberra. -- irma. wjz has weather ask traffic together. bob is here with the updated numbers. first warning weather. we're all smiles here, bob. >> just an incredibly beautiful afternoon. early september. here it is, april. temperatures back up in the mid- 60s. just about normal.

normal high is now 64. we're at 65. d.c. at 66. oakland at 55. it was chilly this morning. temperatures are now running six degrees warmer than they were yesterday. 13 degrees warmer in oakland. and about the same down to our south. pax river in ocean city. but this weekend, even warmer air coming in as high pressure over us now moves off the east coast. the winds go back to the southwest. and that's going to get us into the 70s tomorrow. and believe it or not, into the 80s for about three days. and yes, we might even touch 90 degrees, which would actually probably break a record either monday or tuesday. vic? >> okay, bob. that's good to hear. let's check in on the roads now with kristy breslin at wjz traffic control. hi, kristy. >> hi, vic. hi, everyone. 95 is just a mess. and it's because of that earlier accident at little gun falls bridge. it stretches and is at least 30 minutes long.

hundreds come together in minnesota, remembering those who were killed in an rv crash in kansas. balloons were released today in memory of the five members of the kirber family who died in that crash. more than 800 people gathered at a school at the family's

hometown of jordan. the crash happened april 1st, when the family was driving home from a motocross in texas. zenada gonzalez is suing anthony for defamation. she claims that she was threatened and harassed when anthony came up with a fake name for a nanny. last july, a jury acquitted anthony of all charges dealing with kaley anthony's death. but convicted her on four counts of lying. kai is live in the newsroom with more on what happened. >> it's a tragic story. it happened in greenland, when officers tried to serve a search warrant. they arrived to search the home for drugs. the suspect then opened fire, killing the town's police chief. michael maloney. maloney was 48 years old. and days, eight days away from retirement. four detectives from other departments were also shot. two have been treated and released. the others are still in

wasn't dead at all. rafael romo has more on the baby known as light miracles. >> reporter: she weighs only 800 grams, about a pound and three quarters. she was born premature, after only six months of gestation. her parents are calling her a miracle baby. when she was born at randall hospital in northeastern argentina, she had no vital signs. neo natal doctors checked fer for a second time and found no signs of life. she was observed for a while, and declared dead. her mother insisted on seeing the baby once last time, after she was already inside a coffin. >> they put the coffin on top of a stretcher and we looked for a little crow bar to open it because it was nailed shut. i put the crow bar in there and started prying. i took a breath. and took the lid off. at that moment, i saw a white cover over the baby. my wife saw the little body first. and she touched her little

hand. she then uncovered her face. and that's when we heard the little cry. >> reporter: the baby was rushed to the neo natal unit where she remains in stable but guarded condition. according to the officials, the baby was purt in the re-- put in the refrigerator in the morgue for 10 hours and still survived the frigid temperatures. the doctor admitted his medical team is puzzled by the incident. we don't have an explanation for what happened, medeno said, this saturday first time something like this happens at our hospital. >> and that was rafael romo reporting. the director of the hospital says all medical staff have been suspend. an investigation is under way. firefighters in kansas look for a dramatic rescue. looking for a dog, trapped in the creek. the man walked his dog, named taz, along the creek in south wichita. somehow taz got spooked and ended up in the water. crews thought he drowned.

it won't be humid. but it will be pretty hot. 65 now. see how low the dew point is, 25 degrees. extremely dry air. once again, fire danger extreme in many, many areas of the east. because it hasn't rained recently. 21% humidity is extremely dry for this portion of the country. west wind the at 10, not helping at all. but they're not as strong as they were yesterday. the barometer still on the rise. 30.21 inches. right now, 65 here. 60 ocean city. 66 in d.c. and the coolest spot, oakland, coming in at 55 locally. mid-60s most places. at least 60 or so by the water, annapolis and kent island. and up in bel air, coming in at 62 this morning. lots of 30s. widely scattered frost was reported north of the city. really wasn't a killing frost. but there was a little frost in in some areas, where it got down into the mid-30s this morning about light winds. right now, our west wind, 10, 7, 12. tomorrow, the winds go more to the southwest. that's going to bring in warmer

air tomorrow. even warmer air coming our direction by sunday and monday. down here, temperatures in the 80s. now, this is going to set the stage for some very violent, severe thunderstorms. and a very high risk for tornadoes. from oklahoma, kansas, western portions of missouri. into southern iowa and eastern sections of nebraska. right through this area right here. saturday and sunday. if you don't know anybody heading out that way issue it's very rare for the weather service, severe storm center to issue something this far ahead of time. but this region right in here, raul of the ingredients are coming together. warm moisture coming out of the gulf of mexico. a very strong jet stream coming from california, going to spin right through there. so we have this warm air coming up there. colder, dry air in behind it. that's where that spin is going to happen. it could be very large, dangerous tornadoes in that area. we're talking saturday and sunday in this portion of the plain state. we'll be watching that. people out there have been advised to take shelter already. get out of that region. this will be a major outbreak.

in the meantime, cold air. look at that. snow in the sierras. these areas of showers are not really going to impact us a whole lot. we've got clear skies in the east. the front associated with that will bring us a risk of a shower or thundershower activity, late tuesday and wednesday. then it will get a little cooler. meantime, lots of warm temperatures ahead of that front as the winds go back to our south and southwest. the mild, nice weather today. and tomorrow becomes very warm. saturday night, as warm air moves in. there may be a brief shower, extreme southern pennsylvania. northern maryland possibly. only a 20% chance. but by sunday, we're back into the 80s. and our weekend, early next week, that's where the really warm air comes in. could get to 90 before it cools down on monday. southwest winds, gusting to 25 knots. that will bring that warm air in. the bay temp now, 54. tonight, then, pleasant night. very comfortable. normal. 40s, under clear skies. and a lot of moonlight tomorrow.
