took 45 minutes to get from falls road. >> took me 45 minutes to get from towson. usually it takes half hour. >> there was an accident. >> reporter: those who planned ahead and took alternate routes found themselves creeping along. others faired a little better am. >> i came down park heights. and it was slow. but the first part of the ride was actually okay. i came in a little early, though, about 7:00. >> the problems all stem from crushed pipes underneath the north and south jfx. the city considers repairs urgent to avoid a dangerous sinkhole. but those will leave the left lanes closed for nearly two months. >> i think a bit of an overkill. i think they should be working 24/7 and get it done quicker. >> reporter: but for now, most are having hands full trying to figure out how to make the commute better. >> either leave early or stay late. >> there's no use complaining

because nothing can be done. >> our live coverage continues with kristy breslin at wjz traffic control. did people heed the warnings? we heard them all weekend long. >> well, mary, i think they did. but regardless, since there are so many alternate routes, most of them have been packed. let's take a live look. as you can see, at the 28th street bridge, we have the left lanes on both the northbound and southbound routes closed down. but the alternate routes are definitely the ones you want to take. i mean, at this hour, right now, we have about a 10-minute delay already from cold spring lane to gate street. definitely the best routes would be reisterstown, charles street, york road, or even loch raven boulevard. but we'll continue to keep you up to date on how the situation progresses. back to you. >> all right, crition tee. thank you. -- kristy. thank you. our coverage continues with a birds' eye view. captain mike perry is live in sky eye chopper 13. >> reporter: the official outflow from the city has

the harbor. in that promenade area now, on this unusually warm spring afternoon. outside at the moment, it's hot and sunny. feeling more like july than april. bob turk has more on the unusually high temps. >> i'll bet that water is pretty cold down there. but the day, certainly temperatures today, very normal for the middle or end of july, the hottest temperatures. it just jumped. hasn't changed on our computer yet. but it just changed to 89. not that hot in oakland. ocean city with the breeze off the ocean. only 70. but everywhere away from the water body, temperatures in the upper 80s or at least the mid- 80s. and that makes us four degrees warmer today than even yesterday when we were in the low to mid-80s. now, as far as the records go, just shy of it, 2002, 90 degrees on this date. so far today, at last coming in at 8956 this morning. and the average highs, only 65.

the average low, at 43. the record low, there you see it, 30 back in 1962. there is a cooldown coming our way, tomorrow, probably 10 to 15 degrees cooler than today. mary? >> bob. thank you. well, the death toll rises in the midwest, after this weekend's tornado outbreak. the extent of the damage in the great plains is just beginning to be realized. our first warning weather coverage continues with manuel gallegus. >> reporter: he lost his family home, but woodward oklahoma resident kyle reynolds considers himself lucky. >> this was our dream house. >> reporter: reynolds' daughter was the only person in the house when a fast-moving tornado moved through the neighborhood. she survived, barely making it to the shelter in time. >> just the second that she clicked that third lock on the safe room door is when it hit. >> reporter: federal and state officials surveyed the damage on the ground. as crews worked on power lines. residents spent the day cleaning up debris. and rummaging through the

wreckage. michelle is searching for documents in a field of jagged rubble. all that's feel is a row of rubbage. >> i have -- homes and lives you can't replace. >> reporter: residents say the tornadoes moved very fast. and there were no lights or sirens. lightning apparently took out the town's warning system. >> reporter: officials say residents across the plains in midwest did pay attention to the early weather warnings. they believe the 24-hour advanced notice saved lives. in wichita, kansas, school officials at trinity academy took the warning seriously. >> hello? >> they stopped the school's prom for two hours, while students rode out the storms in a basement. storms destroyed homes and businesses in kansas, iowa and nebraska. but oklahoma was the only state that reported deaths or serious injuries.

in woodward, oklahoma, manuel gallegus, wjz eyewitness news. >> our first warning weather coverage continues. meteorologist bernadette woods with more on this early outbreak of twisters. bern? >> it's been an incredible stretch already. in march, we had record numbers now. in april, over the weekend, over 100 reports of tornadoes. and that was just on saturday alone. let's take you back to saturday. there's where the core of the tornadoes broke out. you can see from oklahoma all the way up to iowa. there was a few different parts of the storm that were producing these tornadoes. and unfortunately, in one case, dead in oklahoma. now we switch over to sunday. and the storm tracker a little farther to the north and east. not as many tornadoes. but still a lot of severe weather. we want to take you to first warning doppler radar. and show you this storm is moving out there. not as much of a tornado threat today. but still a severe weather threat across the south. and you can see the northern edge just completely breaking up as it moves in our direction. it will factor into our forecast, though, and we'll have that coming up.

>> thanks, bern. a baltimore judge reduces the bail for the suspect charged in the videotaped assault of a virginia man. 28-year-old aaron parsons' bond is lowered from a million dollars to half a million dollars. parsons, who is from rosedale, surrendered to police after the beatings made national headlines. the victim is also robbed and stripped naked. police are looking for three other suspects, captured on video. in custody, baltimore county police get a break in the case of a church arson in dundalk. vic is in the newsroom with the arrest and more on the shocking age. >> reporter: the suspects in custody of 12- and 13-year-old boys. they are charged with setting a three-alarm fire that heavily damaged mount zion church. police say the boys broke into a shed last tuesday. they found a lighter and gasoline. one boy poured the gas while the other set it on fire. high winds engulfed it; >> the fire caused $400,000 in

damage. the church has set up a donation fund to help rebuild. if you'd like to help, you can go to wjz.com to find out more information. secret service scandal. nearly a dozen agents are in trouble. the agents, along with five u.s. service members are accused of hiring prostitutes while in columbia with the president. nora o'donnell reports for wjz. president obama wants a thorough investigation. >> if it turns out that some of the allegations that have been made in the press are confirmed, then of course i'll be angry. >> reporter: president obama ended two days in carta henna at a press conference, where the focus was supposed to be on trade and security in latin america. instead, the scandal, engulfing the secret service, continued to make news. >> we're here on behalf of our people. and that means that we conduct ourselves with -- with the

utmost dignity and probity. and obviously what has been reported doesn't match up with those standards. >> reporter: the allegations involve at least 11 secret service members, who are in columbia, preparing for the president's visit. there were reports of drinking and soliciting prostitutes wednesday night, at the hotel carieb. the scandal broke open thursday morning, when an argument allegedly took place between one of the secret service officials and a woman who said she hadn't been paid. prostitution is legal in columbia, but the concern is that the security of the president could have been compromised. members of congress vowed to investigate. >> whatever they do in their personal life should not be done in columbia, should not be done when they're getting ready for the president of the united states to come in. their job is to protect the president. >> reporter: officials say this incident was more about personal misconduct than an operational failure. >> they do very hard work, under very stressful circumstances.

so stay tuned. we could be breaking that this afternoon. let's just put things in perspective. 65 is our average high. we only dropped close to that overnight. and tonight, we're only going down to about 60 degrees. still coming in at 89 here in baltimore. and 90 degrees in cumberland. can you believe this? incredible. but if you go along the water, definitely is cooler because the water temperatures are still in the 50s for most of us. we'll take you in a little closer. and immediately, along the coast, it has been in the 70s. right now, though, 82 degrees in annapolis. 82 in kent island. but as soon as you go inland, we're talking upper 80s. winds have picked up out of the south. it's a very warm wind for us today. and you can see, we're one of the hot spots up and down the east coast. but temperatures do drop off pretty drastically on the other side of the front. and you can see, that's where the front is. and it's what is pumping up all of this heat. now, this is the same front that brought all of the tornadoes to the plains in the upper midwest of the weekend. but it's been a very strong,

powerful storm. it has even produced snow behind it, in parts of minnesota. the thing is, though, the storm has already peaked out. it's weakening as it moves our way. and you can see, completely fizzling out. we do need the rain. but we barely each have a chance for a shower or thunderstorm as it passes through. so what we're looking at for us is temperatures starting to come down today. but still in the 70s tomorrow. then wednesday, a second front is going to pass by to our south. clouds with that. and just a chance for a few showers. the farther south you go. and better chance you get. but still just a chance. that gets out of here on thursday. and another on the weekend. the forecast comes together like this on the waters. small craft advisories, still in effect, with winds gusting out of the south. tomorrow, they turn around to the northwest. that will start to cools down. but we only go to 68 degrees. then our cooldown is still in the 70s. so sunshine, patchy clouds out

hello. thanks for staying with eyewitness news. i'm denise koch. and i'm vic carter. here's what people are talking about. >> a chilling scene in a norwegian courtroom today. the trial begins for a man who admits to killing 77 people. survivors and family members of the victims packed the small courtroom. >> reporter: anders berring breivik smiled as a guard removed his handcuffs, then gave a defiant, closed-fist salute, as his family crowded into the courtroom. breivik said he killed 77 people in a bombing shooting spree last summer. but he pleaded not guilty to criminal charges, saying he acted in self-defense to save the country from a muslim takeover. breivik wiped away tears when prosecutors showed him anti- muslim video he posted on you tube before the killing spree. lawyers showed a map of vatoya

case. they are asking a florida judge to reverse an order. >> motion in question seals the records in george zemmerman case. zimmerman is charged with second-degree murder of trayvon martin. several news organizations, including cnn and the press vay the public has a right to that information. they want it unsealed. florida law will have to look into whether it would cause a serious threat to justice. zimmerman's attorney wanted to insure his client a fair trial from an unbiased jury. >> no hearing date for the media's motion has been set. for the firsttime in five years, students at virginia tech are attending class on april 16th. this is the first year the school has not suspended classes to mark the rampage. the student gunman seung-hui

cho then killed himself. the governor of virginia is scheduled to speak at a campus wide candlelight vigil later tonight. the man convicted of murdering cockeysville native yeardley love now knows when he'll face a day for sentencing. the sentencing has been pushed back from today to august 30th. in february, george huguely was convicted of killing his ex- girlfriend. prosecutors have recommended the judge sentence the chevy chase native to 26 years in prison. the government began its attempt to convict roger clemens today. the names are potential witnesses are read in court, including baseball player barry bonds and baseball commissioner bud selig. >> reporter: inside washington's federal courthouse, roger clemens stood to acknowledge the perspective jurors into second perjury trials.

the legendary pitcher is accused of lying to congress in 2008 about using performance- enhancing drugs. the government's first shot at the case last july ended with a mistrial, after prosecutors showed jurors evidence the judge declared inadmissible. investigative reporter nathaniel vinton covered the first trial and is back in the courtroom for the new york daily news. >> i think it's really embarrass for the prosecutors. it was a dumb mistake. >> reporter: the trial could bring big names to the witness stand. monday, both sides bring to the lineup of more than 100 potential witnesses, including former stars jose canseco and barry bonds. >> the key witnesses will once again be brian mcnamee. he was the trainer who claims he injected him with steroids and saved the used needles. but the most-anticipated testimony could come from

kristy breslin is monitoring the situation at traffic control. >> right now, we are already seeing some early delays on the jones falls expressway. if you're traveling in the northbound direction, you can expect delays there from fayette street to pleasant. southbound already backed down from cold spring lane to fayette. and we just expect those delays to get even thicker. alternate routes, liberty road, reisterstown, york ask charles. there's plenty of ways around that. on the west side inner loop, slowing from 95 to security boulevard. north side inner loop, stop and go there from dulaney valley boulevard to providence. and 95 southbound, an accident there, blocking the right-hand lane. that delay back to caton avenue. the accident right there at the beltway. other accidents include emerton road, at patterson mill. also mchenry and south fulton in baltimore city. let's take a live look as you can see on the left side of your screen. jfx. that's right there near maryland avenue. if your property has been damaged by fire, flooding or storms, you can trust the

murder charges today, linked to the crash of a van in texas, filled with illegal immigrants. police say the 15-year-old driver was carrying about 16 immigrants in the vehicle, when he fled from police and crashed on a texas highway. nine people were killed. police say the teen was working for a human trafficking ring and is now facing nine counts of murder. prosecutors say they want to try him as an adult.

an overnight siege by militants in afghanistan. capital violence comes to an end today. the taliban is taking credit for a string of four coordinated assaults in four cities. [ gunshots ] >> well, unfortunately, you're looking at video of these assaults, but we don't have alan pizzy's reports at this time. we'll bring it to you as soon as we can get it. afghanistan officials say three civilians were also killed when they were caught in the crossfire. a young child speeds off in a car with his father inches away. police say the man was standing next to his running car at a 7- eleven. when he turned his back for a moment, another person jumped in the car and took off with the 3-year-old son sleeping in the back seat. the man eventually dropped the

race accident is called off in san francisco. bill whittaker reports for wjz. one body has been recovered and three others were saved. >> reporter: it was a dramatic coast guard rescue. three sailors, lifted to safety after clinging to jagged outcroppings, off the coast of san francisco, holding on for their lives. they were three of the eight- person crew on the low-speed chase. this 38-foot racing yacht, competing in a round-trip race from the san francisco yacht club to the rugged islands. a rocky wildlife refuge. >> coast guard, petty officer second petty class, levi green. >> swept people. and the rest of the crew turned the vessel around. and they got hit by another wave, which knocked them into the rocks. >> reporter: the coast guard launched boats, planes and helicopters to the rescue, 27 miles offshore. pulled from the water, the body of mark cassen, an artist who loved to paint scenes of

sailing. >> the racers on the boats are experienced crewmembers. >> reporter: ed lynch, director of the san francisco yacht club says this is the first major accident in the 107 years of this race. >> we will definitely, you know, take stock of this incident and do some soul searching. >> reporter: on a clear day, you can see them from san francisco. now, everyone knows what experienced sailors have long known. this is a treacherous environment. bill whittaker, in los angeles. >> last month, the coast guard responded to another sailing accident near the same spot. well, we're now going to go back to that story of the overnight siege of afghan militants. allen pizzey reports that the taliban is taking credit for a string of coordinated assaults in four cities. >> reporter: the operations to root out and kill the insurgents was carried out with the afghans, without the security force. but it took almost 18 hours from start to finish.

a handful of insurgents took over a building site, in what is supposedly one of the city. this morning, the bodies of taliban fighters were still sprawled in the rubble. testament to the fierce fighting. the taliban said the operation marked the start of their offensive. the spokesman said it had been planned for months and was in part revenge for u.s. troops having burned the koran. and for the killing of 17 afghan civilians, let alone, u.s. army sergeant. the attack here and the brief eventual capital, left 36 insurgents dead. eight afghan security members were killed and 40 wounded. one insurgent was captured and reportedly confessed for what is known as the subgroup that operates from neighboring pakistan. u.s. ambassador, ryan crocker, backed that up yesterday. attacks like this demonstrate why we need to be here, he said. to get out before the afghans

mountain, down in the valley, cumberland and 90. 88 in washington. 70, ocean city, with the winds off the ocean. of course, 86 in elkton. and east oven as well. -- easton as well. locally, temperatures in the mid- to upper 80s. this is basically the highest temperature of the day, between 4:00, 5:00, something like that this time of year. 82, annapolis. kent island. rock hall, by the bay. cooler. away from the bay. temperatures in the mid and upper 80s. still even up to our north. albany, 89. in fact, the nation's high, was in central massachusetts. wet spear massachusetts, 93 degrees this afternoon. and today was the boston marathon. it's still 84 degrees there. now, if you get down to nantucket. surround them by the cold ocean. it's only 57. portland, 68. 83. and 87 in syracuse. scrat scranton and philly. it is cooler to the west. there's a weak front that's going to come through the area.

late tonight. no shower activity. a few clouds. winds go back to the west and northwest. it will drop temperatures tomorrow. 10 to 15 degrees. cooler than today. there's a breeze. although the breeze is warm, it's very dry. so it's still helping to dry out all of the woodlands, leaves, et cetera, very, very dry conditions in the entire area. 89 so far today. 56 this morning. the average is 65 and 43. and the records, we may have done it, in between hours. 90, in 2002. and 30 degrees in 1962. here's a front that caused all of the havoc in the midwest this weekend. and the plain states. it's weakened considerably. except way down here across the southern mississippi valley area. still pretty good thunderstorms. but in our part of the world. there's just nothing left to it. a few showers in west virginia are not going to make it here. we'll see a few clouds and wind shift. and yes, it will get cooler tomorrow. so once the front gets through, we'll be back to closer to average temperatures.
