hi. i'm kai jackson. and i'm mary bubala. here's what people are talking about. that breaking news just into the wjz newsroom. long-time powerhouse producer, and abc's new career's eve, rocking eve host, dick clark, has died. details surrounding his death are unclear. but clark had suffered a significant stroke, back in 2004, forcing him to retire. the tv legend also suffered from type 2 diabetes. clark has been married three times and has three children. he started his career, hosting "american bandstand." he was affectionately called america's teenager because he never seemed to age. dick clark, dead at age 82. wjz will have much more on dick clark and his death, coming up, all new at 5:00 and 6:00

tonight. shocking new scandal. photographs of u.s. troops in afghanistan, that appear to show soldiers, posing next to bodies. danielle nottingham reports for wjz. the u.s. is launching a criminal investigation. >> reporter: top u.s. officials are strongly condemning photos the los angeles times published that appear to show american troops, posing with dead insurgents in afghanistan. >> that behavior that was depicted in those photos, absolutely violates both our regulations and more importantly, our core values. >> reporter: the two printed photos are among 18 taken in 2010 that an 82nd airborne division soldier wanted the newspaper to make public. secretary pineta said the paper asked the l.a. times not to run the photos. >> i'm not excusing that behavior. but neither do i want these images to bring further injury to our people our to our

relationship. to our relationship with the afghan people. >> they said the president wants those responsible held accountable. >> the obama administration is already dealing with a series of incidents that have strained relationships with afghanistan. last month, an army sergeant, allegedly kill 17 afghan civilians in a shooting rampage. earlier this year, video surfaced, showing marines urinating on afghan corpses. and the accidental burning of korans at a nato air base, sparked deadly riots. secretary pineta apologized on behalf of united states and department of defense. and said this latest incident will be fully investigated. at the white house, danielle nottingham, wjz eyewitness news. at a meeting in brussels, the u.s. is working with nato allies to finalize plans by the end of 2014. another scandal is growing

in scope. the u.s. secret service is growing today. they want to interview women who allegedly came back to hotel rooms of members of the military and other secret service agents. the incident may have occurred just hours before the president's arrival in south america last week. the agents are on administrative leave. and their security clearances have been revoked. >> breaking news from florida. a short time ago, the judge in the george zimmerman case steps down. judge jessica rexider recused herself. zimmerman's attorney made the request when it was discovered there was a relationship between the judge and an attorney. online warnings sent fear across the campus of university of maryland college park. vic is in the newsroom with more for a victim who threatened a shooting rampage. >> a judge ruled that 19-year-

old 19-year-old alexander song is competent to stand trial. he told the court he is feeling much better. he's been hospitalized are for psychiatric evaluation since march. he posted that he planned to kill enough people to make the national room. mary, back to you. >> all right, vic. thank you. the prince george's county state's attorney's office says it could be months before the case goes to trial. desperate for a baby. a texas woman confesses to shooting and killing a young mother to steal her newborn son. moments ago, she is charged with capital murder. >> reporter: 3-day old kegan shushard was found alive tuesday night, hours after his mother was gunned down in this parking lot near houston. >> she was nice, sweet. lovable. i loved her, she loved me. and everything was going fine

until today. >> reporter: authorities say kayla was getting into an argument with another woman in a parked car. witnesses say someone shot golden. golden fought desperately to hang on, screaming for her baby. >> she tried to get the child from the vehicle and she was dragged to the ground as the car took off. >> she was laying on the ground. she wasn't moving for nothing. but then i saw a blue lexus drive up in that direction. >> reporter: police immediately issued an amber aletter. they raided a nearby-- alert. they raided a nearby apartment complex and found a car that matched the description of the car. >> reporter: authorities were conducting a background check on kegan's entire family before releasing him. >> obviously when you have a kidnapping case or aggravated kidnapping case on top of a murder, this is dire circumstances. >> reporter: now golden's

husband is trying to come to grips with raising three children without a mother. >> it's hard. it's hard. i'm going to miss her a lot. >> police say mclane chose a new mother at random. she is being held without bail. . a man is seriously injured in a crash. it happened on telegraph road in odenton. the 25-year-old driver of the cars in the accident is at shock trauma with life- threatening injuries. there were no students on the bus. and the bus driver refused medical attention at the scene. the crash is still under investigation. well, a mild winter means a longer summer vacation for baltimore county students. jessica is live in the newsroom with more on the new end of the year dismissal date. jessica? >> reporter: mary, instead of schools ending on june 15th, the new last day of school is june 8th. the school system only closed two days of the year because a hurricane knocked out power. the schools have bad days built

in. no snow this winter means four more days of summer vacation. >> they're getting ready to sing "school's out for summer, jess, thank you." no word yet on a shorter school year for other counties. wild swings on wall street left the chesapeake in the worst shape in years. alex demetrick said, too much of what are normally good things left the day with bad water. every year, the university of maryland oversees a bay report card. two years in a row, they received a d-plus. >> it's the worst since we started calculating in 1986. >> heavy rains hit the bay's multistate watershed. >> which brought lots of nutrients and sediment down river. followed by a long, hot, dry summer. and we cooked from the bay. >> reporter: that cooking produced huge algae blooms, which fed off nutrients like

nitrogen. oxygen vanished. then the time -- final blow hit. huge trough of runoff from tropical storm lee. almost five seconds ever water pouring into the bay. and not just water. sediment levels researchers hadn't seen in decades. >> this is top soil that farmers don't want to lose. this is stuff that has come off of construction sites this. is us. >> too much sediment can definitely disrupt the living resources of the bay. >> reporter: and it did. burying and causing a die-off of underwater grasses. it helped earn an f for the patuxent valley river. >> while the weather hurt last year, this year's warmer and dryer conditions could mean a healthier bay in 2012. >> so we're very hopeful. >> that 2011 weather pattern don't suddenly repeat. alex demetrick, wjz eyewitness news. >> experts who track water

quality say conditions could have been each worse last year, if treatment plans hadn't been started. what a change from monday when we hit 90 degrees. outside today, it is gray and cooler, with a drizzly rain out there. wjz has weather and traffic together. first warning meteorologist tim williams is here with first warning weather. tim, i kind of leaned into liking monday more than today. >> well, mary, we need the rain. you know what the saying says. we're having a little rain moving into the region. actually, it's been taking all day for just a little rain to move across. temperatures are beginning to cool down. drastic cooldown. 52 degrees as of just a second ago. now, the numbers are coming in from the rest of the state. but we want to open this up. we still have more rain moving into the region. we'll probably get the batch that is over west virginia and virginia over the next several hours. then it starts to clear out. probably staying closer to the shore. and we probably won't see much

of that. take a look at our temperatures right now. temperatures actually dropping now, 51 degrees at bwi marshall. 58, the warm spot on the shore. and as mary mentioned, just a little well, cooler, not a little, but a lot cooler. we are 25 degrees cooler today than yesterday. yesterday, at this time, very close to about 80 degrees. and of course, we were at 90 just two days ago. we'll talk about how long this rain stays with us and how much more we can expect to get in your complete updated first warning forecast. kai? >> tim, thank you. let's check on the roads with kristy breslin at wjz traffic control. kristy? >> hi, kai. hi, everyone. the rain is definitely affecting the traffic. let's start with the jones falls expressway. as you know, with construction being done at 28th street, we're expecting significant delays. right now, there is a delay coming out of the city in the northbound direction past north avenue. as far as the beltway goes, traveling on the west side outer loop, stop and go there from liberty to 70. west side inner loop, jammed up to security boulevard. the delay at this point, about 25 minutes.

rejected a pay plan, which included a $25 million pay plan. outgoing chairman dick parsons said citi's pay structure should be changed. president obama is said to have called warren buffett to wish him well, one day after he announced he has prostate cancer. the 81-year-old says his condition is not life- threatening and will begin getting treatment in july. the ceo of berkshire hathaway has long said the current tax fare is -- rate is not fair, pointerring out he pays less than -- pointing out that he pays less than his secretary. gall stones can be very painful. and no case is ever the same. jessica kartalija will ask the experts about gall bladder

disease. >> they are messing with me. these doctors are crazy. we're talking about gall bladders. and usually, this is not that exciting and funny. but more serious. what do people need to know? >> they need to know that when they're having symptoms of pain in their upper abdomen and they have gall stones, that it's usually a gall bladder attack. and they need to think about getting their gall bladder taken out so they don't keep on having problems. >> is this common? is that with why the phones are ringing off the hook? >> it's an extremely common problem. it's probably one of the most common surgeries we do. very painful, right? gall stones have been painful. >> yes. it usually starts out mild. you get either indigestion or heartburn. then you get more and more symptoms, where you get attacks that last an hour or so. but if you keep on having attacks as time goes on, they last longer and longer. >> reporter: is there an age where you really start to see patients suffering from this? >> we used to see women in

it's gray and damp today, such a big change from the past two days. >> yeah, it is. but you know what? looks -- we have been talking about maryland being in a water deficit, a drought. does this help to any degree? >> no. not really. and i say that because the amount is so, so modest. we are approaching just about a tenth of an inch of rain right now at bwi marshall. our deficit, we'll be talking about this more in the next hour or so. but our deficit is about 4 inches or so. we are so far below that this

amount is not really going to help us too much. we'll take maybe some of the immediate fire danger out of the area. but for the most part, we're not really going to put a dent in that rain bucket, at least not right now. let's take a look at first warning doppler radar, give you an idea of what is moving across the region. very, very light showers. not amounting to much. just light drizzle. we won't even say heavy amounts. some of the brighter colors now, around bel air. up around the 24 corridor, near joppa, heading toward churchville. but for the post most part, it has been a very light drizzle, across most of the state. enough to keep our temperatures down with winds from the north and northwest. and not really amounting to much, as far as our amounts so far this afternoon. and we don't really expect to get a ton more. 51 degrees now, our temperature at bwi marshall. 45 is the dew point. relative humidity at 79%, with the winds from the north/northwest at 3 miles per hour. that is helping to suppress our temperatures. about a 40-degree difference in

our temperatures today than monday. it's hard to imagine that swing in just a short time. 30.20 is our barometer reading. high pressure is still very close by. so it's not allowing for much of this rain to move far past the mason-dixon line. but at least across the state, we're getting a little bit of a drink of water if you will. 46 in oakland. 58 on the shore. 56 in patuxent river. around the immediate metro area, everyone in the low to mid-50s. 51 at westminster. 51 in columbia. 55 in annapolis. and kept island. 52 in rock hall. northwest winds are coming across bwi marshall. a bit of a southerly flow around cumberland and oakland. but the temperatures are not really reflecting that. we are going to stay, even with this rain in the average range of our temperatures. normal high now is 66. normal overnight low is about 44. a this batch of rain moves on through, it stays to our south. and we're going to be watching our next rain maker coming from the west. that's going to get here into the weekend. unfortunately, we're talking

1950s. he was also the face of several game shows. clark suffered a heart attack this morning. again, dick clark, dead at the age of 82. wjz will have much more on his death, coming up on eyewitness news at 5:00 and 6:00. inside the sex scandal, rocking the secret service. investigators are in columbia, asking witnesses exactly what happened. noria o'donnell reports for wjz. one u.s. senator says up to 20 women were involved with agents and military aides. >> reporter: this is the strip club. the play club, where cbs news has learned president obama's security team was partying just 48 hours before the president arrived in columbia. the men, 11 secret service, and 10 military members, met as many as 20 foreign women. some prostitutes, and reportedly paid them $60 each to go to their cartagena hotel. >> reporter: the two highest- ranking senators on the committee are receiving briefings on the investigations. they want to know whether national security was

jeopardized. >> we don't know what kind of access these women had to highly-classified information. >> reporter: connecticut senator george said if the allegations -- joe lieberman said if the allegations are true, he is considering a hearing on this. but a top aide says no sensitive information had been compromised, that these agents had not yet had a briefing on the president's trip and did not yet have his schedule. >> reporter: they are looking into 10 members of the military, including five members of the army special elite forces. they would not answer questions on whether this was an isolated incident or pattern of behavior. >> thrfs there was an investigation ongoing. that we should let it take its course before we speculate about its conclusions.

>> now, no one under investigation will be assigned to any future presidential travel until the investigation is complete. the admitted mastermind behind a plan to bomb the new york city subway system takes a stand again against his accomplice. kai has the latest from court. >> that's right. nagy bulla zazi testified today that al qaeda taught him very simple formulas for suicide bombs. today, the trial of his alleged accomplice. now, prosecutors say zazzi and another former high school classmate from queens plan to bomb new york's subway in 2009. the three were arrested days before their planned attack. also, zazzi said his terrorist cell considered others in new york. >> the two other defendants in the case have both pled guilty and are cooperating with federal investigators. >> reporter: capitol hill is weighing in on the government's las vegas spending scandal. the general services

administration is again in the hot seat. as lawmakers try to understand accusations of wasteful spending. gsa executive jeffrey neily hosted an elaborate conference that cost americans more than $800,000. lawmakers are working to implement practices so that misuse of funds does not occur gen again. >> it is time to send a signal that this kind of public mistrust will not be tolerated. >> one resigned, two aides were fired and others on administrative leave, waiting for disciplinary action. exactly where it wrecked. people of italy want it all cleaned up. >> reporter: the fate of the massive liner is still to be determined. but there is a growing sentiment that the rock which ripped a 160-foot gash in the

possible? >> as soon as possible, yes. >> reporter: resurfacing the costa concordia is expected to cost three 1/2 million dollars, roughly half of what it cost to build. then it's up to the insurance company to determine whether it can be put back into service or simply turned into scrap metal. >> the ship's captain faces multiple charges in connection with causing a ship wreck, failing to assist passengers and abandoning ship. surprising statistics about where teenagers get their alcohol. >> reporter: 26% of all high school drinkers say they get their alcohol from a parent or family member. the latest research from motors against drunk driving also reveals that parents are the number 1 influence over their children's drinking decisions. the national advocacy group is encouraging parents to talk with their kids about alcohol. teen alcohol use kills 6,000

baltimore up to p.a. light rains. slightly heavier pockets. south of the city, it's pretty much ended. in fact, sunshine coming up there in washington. southwest of us, it's another batch in west virginia and virginia. that's also moving in a general northeasterly direction. we still have a risk of picking up more rain this evening. until 9:00, 10:00, we could still see dampness in the region. take a look around the region. boy, has it dropped. 51 now. temperatures right now are running. look at this. 25 degrees colder than yesterday at this hour. guess what? 40 degrees colder than monday, when we were around 90 to 91 degrees. we'll stay clear by tomorrow afternoon, as the rain ends tonight. looks like another chance of rain will be there for the weekend. >> thank you, bob. let's click on the roads with kristy breslin at wjz traffic control. hello. >> hi, everyone. the rain definitely not having a positive effect on the

back to you. >> a founding member of baltimore's rock band, child's play, has died. the band's singer, brian jack, recently passed away. it's not clear exactly how he died or when he died. child's play formed in 1983 and released three successful albums. they played in packed clubs in maryland and up and down the east coast. jack left the band in 1991 to start a solo career. the band's drummer hay -- says he is shocked and saddened by jack's death. kim kardashian is an expert at getting publicity. but can she get votes? >> i've decided i'm going to run for the mayor of glendale. >> yes. you heard it on her sister's reality show. kardashian said she was mulling or the idea of running for mayor. but now, several prominent officials are backing the tv star. the former mayor said he would love to be her campaign manager. the only thing is, she must run for city council before she can

bp finalizes a multibillion- dollar settlement. now, a federal judge is being asked to sign off on the deal. a london-based oil giant estimates it will pay about $7.8 billion to resolve private party claims. however, that does not include fines from the federal government or claims from the state governments of louisiana and mississippi. the judge has not indicated when he will rule. a shocking request from the man on trial for norway's worst mass killing. anders breivik says he believes there can be only two just

it to get heated. but if it gets inappropriate, that changes the decorum of the room. for the third time in just three weeks, crews are called in to rescue a whale off the coast of southern california. this giant graze whale is tangled in fishing lines near san clemente. about 100 feet of lines is wrapped around its pectoral fin and its mouth. crews cut off a portion of the line but couldn't get all of it. they put tracking on the buoys. >> in tonight's healthwatch report, doctors have linked gun disease for heart disease. but now, an expert panel says there is no proof one causes the other. teresa garcia has the story for wjz. >> going to check in areas back here. >> reporter: barber was concerned when she first learned she had gum disease. >> it was scary. because i'm like, well, i could have gingivitis and actually

have a heart problem. or it could lead to something major in my health. >> reporter: for years, studies have suggested that bacteria in the mouth can get into the blood stream and cause heart problems. but a new statement from the american heart association says there is no proof gum disease causes heart disease or stroke. >> reporter: the data that is available right now, would suggest that there was no direct relationship there. >> reporter: after reviewing hundreds of studies, researchers also say that treating gum disease, including brushing and flossing, does not reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. experts say the same risk factors can cause both diseases. so many people who smoke have diabetes or high blood pressure, can suffer gum or heart problems. dentists say more research is needed and that taking care of your mouth is still key. >> one thing that i believe in is that oral health is really an indicator of your general health. >> reporter: barber is trying to keep her gum disease under control. >> if i have floss in my car. floss in my purse.

all right. welcome rain in the region. still activity around. but still might see some rain. then we'll start to clear out and it will get warmer with sunshine returning tomorrow. right now, yes, there is rain in the region. not a whole lot.

i mean, nobody has seen really more than 2/10ths of an inch. bwi, about 15/100ths of an inch, which is twice. it's a little help. but really not anything really. ground is now moist. a little bit. at least the grass is now wet. but the soil is still very dry. we need a lot more rain. several inches of rain to break this drought. this weekend, we have another chance of getting more rain. we'll talk about that in a minute. take a look at temperatures. winds now northwest at 3. the barometer holding steady. 30.20 inches. right now, 46 in oakland. a little warmer to the south. 50 here. 56 in elkton. rather humid air mass. 56 westminster. 55 annapolis and kent island. bel air and rock hall, and a nice 52. very light winds. certainly not a major factor. but they brought in this cool air from the north.

moisture coming from the south. kind of an overrunning situation. they have cool air at the surface and warm air coming overhead. and we have a nice little batch of light rain in the region. didn't even expect it to get this far to the north. by the way, the next system developing across minnesota. this front is going to be, we think, in our region, sometime saturday and sunday. but it looks like it's going to slow down or stall. and that is good for us. because what we expect to happen for us is area of low pressure expected somewhere in the south could give us a pretty good dose of rain later in the weekend into later next week. right now, watching the rain move through the area. mostly to the south of us. but it continues to roll through the area. to the north, it's partly cloudy. mostly cloudy skies. still some rains down here in virginia, west virginia. we'll have a risk of more showers yet this evening. and it warms up. sunshine for thursday and friday. and over the weekend, that low pressure and front approaching, maybe a chance of more decent rain. gusting winds on the bay. they'll be dying down. bay temp around 57.
