damage control punishment in the embarrassing secret service sex scandal. >> the agency is getting rid of agents. but some say that's not enough. >> hi, everybody. i'm mary bubala. >> i'm kai jackson. here's what people are talking about. >> the secret service is cleaning house. three unnamed agents are being forced out in response to a prostitution scandal that is shaking up the agency. >> reporter: three secret service agents are out of a job for their involvement in the columbian prostitution scandal. and lawmakers expect others soon will be. >> my understanding is there will be more resignations coming in the next day or so. >> reporter: already, one supervisor has been fired. another supervisor forced to retire, and a third agent resigned. eight others remain on administrative leave, with

their security clearance suspended. some members of the team allegedly hired prostitutes, after a night of partying in cartagena, ahead of president obama's arrival. congressman peter king says there is no evidence drugs played a role. but says the agency's investigation will be thorough. >> a number of them are right now undergoing drug tests and polygraphs. >> reporter: the white house has expressed disappointment in the scandal but is standing by the secret service director. one republican senator is suggesting the president's leadership is partly to blame. >> that sounds very much like a lawmaker attempting to politicize something that is not at all political. >> reporter: the secret service is moving aggressively to get to the bottom of the scandal, with investigators on the ground in columbia and washington. the agency continues to brief members of congress and one hearing is expected next week. at the white house, danielle nottingham, wjz eyewitness news.

>> at least 10 members of the military who were staying at the same hotel are also under investigation. >> she's charged with a heinous crime. today, the woman who admits to killing a new mother and stealing her baby, goes before a judge. vic is in the newsroom with that story. vic? >> the nurse charged with stealing a baby from his dying mother's arms, tells a judge, she understands she is facing capital murder charges. 33-year-old verna mclane is being held without bond. she spoke softly and looked down during today's hearing. police say mcclane waited outside for a random woman with a baby. she's accused ofil canning 28- year-old kayla gordon and snatching her 3-day-old son. the baby was found safe and is now back to his mom. -- father. >> mcclane recently suffered a miscarriage and was desperate for a child. a new case broken wide open. christine jared was last seen

in her home in january 1991. today, her husband, 57-year-old robert jared, is charged with her murder, acting on new information, police searched jared's home and found the remains of a woman believed to be his wife, under the floridas of a shed, buried in concrete. wjz will bring you more on the shocking news coming up at 5:00 and 6:00. the mother of baltimore native yeardley love, wants school leaders to do more to protect women against domestic violence. sharon love wants to make sure what happened to her daughter doesn't happen to anyone else. >> reporter: that's right. sharon love is speaking out for the first time since yeardley's death and george huguely's conviction. and she wants to make laws even tougher for violent domestic offenders. >> our lives will never be the same. >> reporter: following the conviction of her daughter's one-time boyfriend, george huguely, sharon love throws her support behind the renewal of

it's the work that many other organizations like us do to provide support for victims. >> reporter: george huguely faces up to 26 years in prison. >> reporter: and wjz has also learned that sharon and yeardley's sister planned to file a wrongful death lawsuit. jessica kartalija, wjz eyewitness news. >> jessica, thank you. george huguely will be sentenced in august. hundreds of lives were lost in the united states on this day 17 years ago. ♪ [ music ] today, oklahoma governor mary falon took part in a ceremony to honor victims of the 1995 oklahoma city bombing. 168 people were killed and 500 hurt when a bomb exploded at the murrah federal building. timothy mcveigh and terry nichols were convicted on charges of the attack. mcveigh was executed. nichols is serving life in prison. attack that coincides with

the branch davidian raid that occurred two years earlier. in 1993, federal militants launched a military-style assault on the compound. the 50-day standoff started after members of a religious sect. attorney general janet reno and the atf were highly criticized for the way that raid was done. going green this earth day weekend. bwi and pepco are showing off their high-profile solar energy projects. solar panels are now on the garage. also unveiled for the first time is the electric vehicle charging station. the solar panels are a $21 million package, designed to reduce energy usage and costs at the airport. the air feels a little cleaner after the rain washes the pollen away. the sun has been in and out all day and the air is mild.

them online for your free consultation. back to you. >> thank you. as comebacks go, it is off the charts. researchers are finding a population explosion of blue crabs in the bay. alex demetrick runs some very promising numbers. >> reporter: a bushel was steamed up as a prop. but what was really hot was the announcement that went with it. >> i am now glad to report that the population of the blue crab is now at a 19-year high. round of applause. >> reporter: according to this year's blue crab survey, 764 million spent the winter in the bay. and juveniles reached a record high of almost 600 million, triple last year's $207 million. >> having that many young crabs in the bay is just great news. because those are the crabs that are going to support the fishery later this summer and in the fall. >> reporter: every winter, maryland and virginia biologists dredge the bay's

particular, has brought reports of minute and escalating violence. >> reporter: foreign ministers met thursday in paris and called the u.n. peace plan the last hope to end the crisis. >> i think we are all here out of a sense of great frustration and outrage over what we see occurring in syria. >> reporter: u.s. secretary of state hillary clinton called for tougher u.n. action against syria, including a weapons embargo, if syria keeps violating the cease-fire. clinton stopped short of calling for military action. many syrians are tired of waiting, angry crowds mobbed u.n. peacekeepers wednesday, accusing the international community of ignoring the violence. tina kraus, wjz eyewitness news. >> more than 10,000 people have been killed in syria's 13 months of violence. 230,000 people have fled the country. >> president hamid karzai, wants wants to speed up the

departure of western troops in afghanistan. this comes days after american soldiers posing with dead insurgents become public. kai is in the newsroom with more. >> in a statement karzai called the statement inhumane and provocative. the obama administration has condemned the actions, shown in the photos. and the u.s. military has launched an investigation into the incidents. karzai is now seeking an accelerated and full transition into afghan forces. the nato force is scheduled to do this in 2014. >> responsibilities to the afghan police and army is the center of the u.s. exit strategy. aftermath of trayvon martin shooting. 17-year-old martin was unarmed when he was shot and killed by neighborhood watchman george zimmerman in february. zimmerman said it was self- defense. he was not initially arrested because of the state's stand your ground law, which allows people to use deadly force anywhere they feel a threat.

zimmerman has been charged with second-degree murder in that case. lawyers for the man accused of a mass shooting in tucson are forced to hear arguments in court. jared lee loughner's attorneys want to end treatment at a facility where they are trying to make him psychologically fit for trial. rock and roll star, ted nugent, sits down with the secret service. the guitarist is set to meet with agents today, regarding recent comments he made to president obama. at the national rifle association, nugent said, quote, if barack obama becomes president again, i will either be dead or in jail by this time next year. end quote. some question whether nugent was alluding to violence against the president. the musician's comments are getting more scrutiny because he endorsed gop presidential

candidate, mitt romney. a lone pilot took off from louisiana and headed to sarasota, when he suddenly began flying circles. firefighters intercepted and watched it from the air as it crashed. the coast srd -- guard is now assisting in recovery efforts. space shuttle discovery rolls into its new home in the smithsonian. mary has more on the final journey. >> a ceremony celebrated the official handoff of discovery today by nasa, forcing this. the shuttle, attached to a boeing 747, landed at an airport outside of washington tuesday. the shuttle will now reside at the smithsonian air and space museum center, near dulles airport. discovery is the oldest of nasa's orbiters and had 148 million miles in space. vic, back to you. >> to mark the occasion, nasa is releasing new ring tones for your phone. including neil armstrong's famous words, one small step

a sandstorm sweeps across baghdad, making it difficult for people there there to breathe. as the blinding dust storm moves through. hospital emergency rooms are packed with people complaining about breathing problems. sandstorms are common in iraq. but several years of drought have aggravated it this year. a washington state dispatcher who took a 911 call from a social worker, just before josh powell killed himself and his children, is being reprimanded for how he handled the call. >> okay. how long will it be? >> enion, ma'am. they have -- i don't know, ma'am. they have to respond to life- threatening emergencies first. >> reporter: he is accused of

questioning the social worker for nearly seven minutes before sending deputies. powell attacked his sons with a hatchet before setting off a massive explosion in the home. he was also crrped a person of interest in the disappearance of his wife susan powell. a bombing, with originally more targets in mind. >> reporter: confessed killer, anders breivik says he wanted to detonate three car bombs and then drive around osslow on a mini motor bike, shooting people, until he was killed. the targets were the government district, the labor party's office, and possibly the royal palace. breivik says he decided that building them was too difficult. he admits to carrying out the attacks last july, but says he was acting to protect his country. 77 people were killed. vic? >> breivik says he also planned to behead norway's prime minister. a heavy windstorm nearly causes a tragedy. a freak storm with 60-mile-per-

hour winds, quickly turn on this small yacht. everyone on board did manage to escape. the same storm wreaked havoc on the set of the new james bond film. from the deck of a cruise ship, passengers spot a small fishing boat, drifting aimlessly off the boat. joel ilanagga explains. >> it's just unimaginable. >> reporter: jeff gilligan of northeast portland snapped this photo of a small, disabled fishing boat, about 130 miles off the coast of costa rica. gilligan and his friends were vacationing as passengers on a princess cruise line and bird watching off the ship's deck last month, when they saw this rudderless boat, with three men, trying to signal for help. >> this is a boat that had lost power and was out in this tropical ocean, far from land. >> reporter: and that's when gilligan immediately alerted crewmembers and sent frantic e- mails to the coast guard.

but the ship kept on going. leaving the tiny fishing vessel drifting at sea. two of the three men on board the small boat, died of dehydration. >> and while we were on the ship, the feeling of powerlessness, because we would have liked to somehow have gone over there and rescued him. >> this small boat was drifting for two weeks in the pacific ocean before the cruise ship passed. it was another two weeks before the lone survivor was rescued. a man who survived on rain water and rotting fish. some feel the distress call was ignored ask called two people their lives. >> one of the men lost has life and the other was a 16-year-old boy. princess cruise line is investigating. officers are tearing apart a new york city basement, as part of the investigation into the disappearance of 6-year-old eaton pats.

the building is about a block from where the family lived. pats vanished in 1999 on his way to school. he was the first missing child ever to have his face featured on the side of a milk carton. the search is expected to take as many as five days. a south carolina mcdonald's employee, accused of giving customers a little something extra in their drinks. a mother and daughter ordered two sweet teas, but instead received regular tea. after they sent it back, they decided to add their own sweetener at home. just before their first sip, they made a disgusting discovery. >> they go home, pop it off to put sugar this it. and lo and behold, they get to a very large chunk of bodily fluid and flem in the top of their drink. >> reporter: police say 19-year- old marvin washington was caught on surveillance, leaning over the drinks before filling them. he is charged with malicious tampering with food. a california family gets

trapped by unwanted visitors, thousands of bees. andrea minnettey reports on the man who came to their rescue. >> reporter: sally felkenins was concerned about her husband's original idea to take over the thousands of bees that took over their front yard. >> of course he didn't have a bee box. he was just going to use a box and probably take it to the park. and hopefully they would go on their merry way. >> reporter: so as you can imagine, she was thrilled when professional bee keepers came knocking, offer offering to take it off their hands. >> bees stung or attacked by the black and yellow swarm, stayed inside. but watched the beekeepers every move. >> most of them were in their netted gear. but there was one that was in charge that had -- he just came, put his hands in, in the bees. and -- no fear.

>> after using a smoker, sally says bees dropped right into the boxes. about five bee boxes, were placed on the front lawn. and the beekeeper will ultimately take them to their new home. >> the beekeepers planned to transport the entire colony to a fruit orchard in oregon -- in oregon. a california teen who broke off with her teacher, is dating him again. the 18-year-old said her relationship is back on with 41- year-old james hooker. hooker said he left his wife and four children for powers. the couple broke up about the time hooker was arrested on charges that he sexually assaulted a student in 1998. the couple made the talk show circuit, justifying their relationship. an impressive play in the stands. check this out. >> pop-up. there's that catch.

east winds, 6. the barometer now, holding steady. 30.05 inches. the dew point is down and drying out nicely. warm spot now. d.c. and cumberland, both at 72. ocean city down by the ocean, where the ocean temperature is in the low 50s. it's only 54 down there. oakland, now,a the 63 locally, with a lot of sunshine. just a few clouds. upper 60s as you see, very pleasant temperatures. tomorrow, four or five degrees. nice day. light east winds right now. winds really won't be a major factor. tomorrow, looks like more of a southerly or southwesterly winds. increased humidity by late tomorrow night. on saturday afternoon, we've got a pretty good chance with this front coming in from the west, of scattered shower and thundershower activity. hopefully we'll get some decent rain out of it. but thundershowers typically come down so hard and fast, most of it just runs off. the good news is, at least some of these models have this front as it approaches us, saturday night and sunday.

slowing down somewhere along the coast and holding up. if that, in fact, happens, low pressure expected to develop, somewhere in georgia, coming up often the coast. at least one of the models has it too far east. and we don't really see much in the way of rain, except the thundershower threat, late saturday. if the low pressure from the gulf can hug our area, make additional moisture, it could actually rain late saturday night into sunday. the models have been going back and forth on this the last couple of days. really probably not going to know more about this until maybe later tomorrow. get more of a concensus. but there's a pretty good shot, we will see more scattered shower or thundershower activity, by late in the afternoon or saturday night. it will be warmer for sure. then that front may be giving us i good chance of rain sunday. south winds, 5 to 10 knots. and we could really use it. the bay temp, still around 57 degrees. so nice, pleasant night, upper 40s and mild for this time of year. and then tomorrow, lots of sun. a few clouds. it will be milder. back up in the low to mid-70s.
