from the city to the counties to your neighborhood. now it's complete coverage. it's wjz, maryland's news station. cold case cracked, the howard county man charged with murder two decades after his wife disappear >> dave: discovery that unearthed a big family secret. hello everyone. >> people are talking about tonight. >> murder mystery decades in the mystery unfolds. woman goes missing, tonight police believe they found her body in her own backyard. we have the break in the case. >> reporter: in the backyard of this house on clear drive and elkridge, howard county, police make a discovery. they found a body of a woman missing for 21 years. >> there was rumors going

around that she was in the pool. >> reporter: all this time she was under the floor boards of the shed, buried in concrete. police say her husband, robert jarrett did it back in 1991, he reported his wife missing. he told police then that christine walked away from their house one night after a heat the argument. never to be seen or heard from again. >> this was someone who was really cared about in the community. she had a lot of friends and family members. and she was someone that we never forgot. >> reporter: police say they always suspected robert jarrett, but never had enough evidence to charge him. until this week when a tipster came forward. >> we knew is sounded suspicious. police were able to get into the shed when jarrett's current wife let them in. they also found personal items on the body that looked like they belonged to christine jarrett. some neighbors still remember christine jarrett well. while others never imagined

that she was always still on clear drive. >> very creepy kind of feeling that she may have been under that shed 21 years. >> reporter: while police suspect the body is christine jarrett, they are not yet confirming that until they receive a full report from the medical examiner's office. in hart county, wjz eyewitness news. >> jarrett is being held without bond on first and second-degree murder charges. police officer is recovering after crashing his suv in southwest baltimore. investigators think oil on the road may have caused the officer to lose control. we're told he should be fine. lawmakers in washington have harsh wards for the secret service agents wrapped in a sex controversy unfolding in colombia. and there is word tonight more agents could lose their jobs. u.s. government investigators are now on the ground trying to piece together exactly what happened last wednesday night.

the government uncovered misconduct so deplorable has ended the careers of three secret service agents. another eight agents remain under investigation and more resignations may be coming. >> i don't see how those involved should be able to continue in their work. >> nancy pelosi said it's time to clean house. >> it's a stunning thing. it's actually disgusting. >> the agents together with members of the u.s. military are accused of drinking at a columbian bar, and then bringing prostitutes back to their hotel. all this while they were supposed to be making security preparations for president obama's visit. from capitol hill, lawmakers worry this is part of a problematic culture. >> if it is cultural, we have to change the culture. if it is normal, we've got to change the normal. >> maryland congressman is the ranking democrat on the house government oversight committee. these behaviors could compromise security. >> a question that i hear almost every week, at least once a week, is are they

keeping the president safe? >> agents have been undergoing lie detector tests and drug tests all week. family devastated after a fire rips through their home. patricia die chad when she was trapped on the third floor. her father and three-year-old daughter are being treated at bayview burn center. investigators think the fire may have been an accident. mystery surrounds the death of an academic adviser. it comes days after he's charged with a assault and child abuse. we have the search for answers tonight. >> reporter: he was out on bail on those child abuse charges when he had a bizarre run-in with police. hours after his release on bail, police say they found patrick rafael erratic on the side of the road throwing things in the street. >> the sergeant approached the individual and the person immediately started yelling at her to shoot him.

shoot him. >> reporter: police officials tell wjz the 41-year-old became violent and spit at officers, they shackled him and put a hood over his head, but the outburst continued. >> he was trying to kick out the windows and was yelling. >> reporter: halfway to the hospital, tony became unresponsive, four days later, he died. now friends and family have questions about his death. tony worked here at buoy state for the past ten years advising incoming freshman and transfer students. students held a candle light vigil for tony who grew close to those he advised. >> he became a close guy, talking about life in general. more than him being an adviser. he became my mentor as well. >> reporter: he taught a seminar. >> in that class, he felt like he had to fix the world in that one class. >> reporter: loved ones want answer about his death. a lawyer tells the baltimore sun the family is in shock from this. you don't expect your spouse to

just die on the way home. and the state medical examiner has not yet determined cause of death. officials are waiting for toxicology results. reporting live, wjz, eyewitness news. >> thank you. police say tony was not breathing when they arrived at the emergency room. he was revived at the hospital, but later died. well-known pastor could spend the rest of his life in prison for sexually abusing a teenage girl. the abuse lasted almost two years. jones used to be the pastor at the renewed hope christian church and he met the girl through her mother. he's facing up to 160 years in prison. emergency landing, plane is forced to turn around after a bird is sucked into its engine. take a look at this video, you can see the birds flying near the delta jet from new york heading to los angeles. the pilot quickly turned the plane around and landed safely at the airport. the passengers moved to another plane to finish the flight.

sheila dixon back in the public eye two years after she was forced to step down amid a corruption scandal. wjz is live, we explain what's behind dixon's bold return. >> reporter: some question whether this event was helping a charity or sheila dixon. >> what about the front row? no comment. no comment. your thoughts. no comment. >> reporter: sheila dixon gets roasted downtown. >> miss dixon, get ready for the worst 90 minutes of community service of your life. >> if you can't laugh at yourself, and if you can't laugh at others, that it's really unhealthy. >> reporter: the last time most of baltimore saw the mayor, she left in disgrace. in 2009, she was found guilty of gift cards meant for the needy. in january of 2010, she

resigned. >> i thank god you left the gift cards alone. >> reporter: she says don't call this a comeback, she's been here for years. the former mayor says the event isn't about motorcycles, but about helping a charity. since her conviction, she has been fulfilling court ordered community service. this night her problems are the past that's why she agreed to be roasted. >> that's really the driving force behind it. really trying to help the girl's organization with the house. >> reporter: others in a humorous way questioned the former mayor's motives. >> sheila dixon, once again, they don't have -- [ indiscernible ] >> reporter: sheila dixon remains on probation. she does get to keep her $83,000 pension which was a source of contention. >> she is not allowed to run for office until 2015. boom in the bay.

it is clear 54 degrees in central maryland right now. complete first forecast is coming up. thick black smoke fills the sky in central ohio. it was the result of a tractor trailer catching fire at an oil company. witnesses report multiple loud booms and explosions as the fire spread to a transformer and a building. it took six hours to bring the fire under control. no one was >> we know of and investigators are trying to figure out how it started. bizarre and dangerous scene in the skies above the gulf of mexico. small plane left louisiana this morning, bound for sarasota, florida. controllers then lost contact with it. two fighter jets were sent to make contact and they reported the plane was flying in circles. it is believed the pilot lost consciousness, the plane crashed into the water with no indications the pilot survived. there is a renewed search

for evidence in one of the most famous cold cases in u.s. history, six-year-old etan pats vanished in 1969. investigators are going through the basement of the building near his home. it was the workshop of a carpenter who was friendly with the boy. a cadaver dog picked up the scents of a human remains. he was the first to have his picture on a milk carton. no one has ever been prosecuted for the crime. recent drug raid on a west baltimore home turns up an alleged dog-fighting ring. wjz looks deeper and how teenagers are paid to steal family pets for dog fighting. >> reporter: angel brown doesn't know what to expect. >> they shouldn't be taking people's dogs. >> reporter: they are dog fighters. five months ago, her pit bull

was taken from her backyard to train the fighters. >> i wouldn't wish that on nobody. >> reporter: when she heard police arrested this man and confiscated eight dogs, angel realized just how lucky she is. >> and then came right over to pick my baby up. >> reporter: long before the case, ali was recovered. >> come here, ali. >> reporter: he was stolen not once, but twice, and now this scared, scared animal is finally going home. >> look at my baby. >> reporter: stolen to be a bait dog, living piece of meat thrown to the fighting dogs to make them more confident. >> it's a high, high, high possibility. >> reporter: pit bull rescuer eric bulk is an expert. his dog was also a bait dog and found by police near death. he was someone's pet. >> the people that are fighting the dogs, they don't even have the spine to steal their own dogs. they'll pay minors underage, 14, 13-year-old kids to go

video shows his leaning his face over the cups. levon helm has passed away. helm was the drummer and singer for the band. their hits dixie down became roll and rock standards. helm was diagnosed with throat cancer in 1998, but kept recording and won a grammy just last year. levon helm was 71 years old. the starbucks frap chi know bug flap is coming to an end. the giant was outed by a vegan website for not disclosing that their use of dried bugs to color the strawberry drinks after a social media backlash, starbucks says it's reformlating the drinks. they will use a tomato-based extract. they will be available in about two months. >> i'm not a vegan, but not i'm happy about having bugs in my drink. >> you'd be surprised with some of the food you eat every day.

southwest. it will bring us a little bit more warmth than we saw this afternoon. and eventually, hopefully some of this moisture in the gulf of mexico is going to run into this front that's moving across the midwest late tonight. showers forming to the west of us. maybe in our region saturday afternoon, saturday night, shower and thundershower activity. of course we're watching the draught washing across the entire region. then we'll have all the rainfall totals to begin. this weekend, we'll let you know about it. we will see some rain here saturday afternoon. i think even on sunday this front hopefully is going to hang-up along the coast and low pressure expected to develop could or at least should enhance some rainfall. particularly along the eastern shore. may see decent rain if the low pressure gets in the right spot. we can see an all-daylight rain or drizzle. at least saturday night late into sunday. maybe lingering into monday. it all depends how close that

low pressure does develop. to the west of us, we'll get cooler, but looks like it'll probably stay dry. i think everybody saturday night will probably see a shower or thundershower out that have front as it goes through the region. south winds in the day, five to ten, bait temp, around 57 degrees. sets 7:49, tonight clear skies. 40s, average low of 44. tomorrow, lots of sunshine, warmer day, low to mid-70s as we head into the weekend, risk of the shower, thunderstorm activity late saturday afternoon or evening. chance hopefully of that rain coming on sunday. if it all works out, we might get a half inch or inch, that's possible. at least partly cloudy monday and tuesday back in the low 60s for early next week. denise. >> thank you. coming up within orioles on the road and on a roll. >> mark has the latest on the high flying baseball birds next in sports. ♪
