free in minutes. tonight, what's next for the alleged killer. >> good evening. i'm kai jackson. here's what people are talking about. still behind bars. george zimmerman is still in jail, while his attorneys frantically work to secure his $150,000 bail. randall pinkston has the latest on his release, from sanford, florida. george zimmerman remains in jail as his attorney works out details for his release. but a major concern is finding a location for zimmerman to live. >> we have a lot of security. >> the judge set bail at $150,000. zimmerman must also report to authorities every three days, wear a gps ankle bracelet to keep track of his movements and obey a dusk to dawn curfew. martin's parents rushed from the courthouse friday, after the judge granted bail. the martin family attorney says they are not happy with the

decision. >> they would rather the killer of their child not be allowed to leave jail. but they understand the rule of law. and they're just trying to deal with with it the best they can. >> but many in this community welcome the bail hearing. they want this case are which has brought national attention to sanford to move forward and be resolved. >> reporter: today, across the city -- >> how many of you agree that the judge made the proper decision to set bail for zimmerman. >> reporter: most residents seem to agree that the legal system is working. >> i'm okay with it. as long as justice is caught up with it. >> reporter: members of this african american high school alumni association hope the incident won't tarnish their city. >> there is a lot of ugly about sanford. and people have seen that. but what they have not seen is the beauty that still exists here. >> reporter: and some are trying to start the healing process. as sanford now prepares for george zimmerman's trial, which may be months away. in sanford, florida, randall pinkston, wjz eyewitness news.

>> it's still unclear if zimmerman will be allowed to live outside the state of florida. breaking news tonight. charles colson, the special counsel to president richard nixon, who went to prison, has died. he was one of the most powerful presidential aidess. aides. colson was on referred to as a master of dirty tricks. monitoring the fragile cease-fire. syria has been engulfed in violence for 13 months. the u.n. estimates that at least 9,000 people have been killed in the uprising. the cease-fire called for violence to end on both sides and begin a political dialogue. total of six secret service members have resigned from their jobs.

wjz is live. weijia jiang has more on what one maryland congressman is saying about the shakeup. weijia? >> reporter: kai, lawmakers on both sides of the aisle have been demanding swift action. and while some say the obama administration is not pushing hard enough, one maryland congressman passionately disagrees. maryland representative elijah cummings is defending the president's response to a prostitution scandal in columbia. >> i think he acted decisively. he got folks out of columbia, the moment he found out about this. he had stripped them of their security clearance. and he suspended them. and they've taken action. >> reporter: the reinforcement is in response to criticism from some republicans who are raising questions about the potential involvement of white house staff. former vice presidential candidate sarah palin spoke out, after learning one of the men accused is david cheney,

who worked security detail for palin during her 2008 campaign. back then, he posted her photo on facebook and said, i was really checking her out, if you know what i mean. cheney is one of six men forced out so far. including supervisor greg stokes. secret service officials continue to brief lawmakers on the scandal that also includes 11 military service members. and as many as 20 columbian women. cummings calls the case an exceptional one. >> i'm very familiar with the secret service. they are very strict on themselves. and i can -- you know, i think basically what we have here, we have a few bad apples. but i mean, this does not speak for the thousands of secret service men and women who literally put their lives on the line every day. >> reporter: and in addition to getting briefings daily, cummings says his congressional committee has turned in 10 questions to the secret service. he expects to get some answers

on may 1st. we're live in baltimore, weijia jiang, wjz eyewitness news. >> weijia, thank you. as a result of the investigation, a 12th secret service employee has been implicated in the scandal. governor martin o'malley wants to call a special session over the budget battle. the democrat wants to repair the state budget, after lawmakers failed to pass a passage, that would have avoided nearly half a million in cuts. o'malley wants to meet only after the house and senate agree on a revenue plan, which included income tax increases. a frederick man crashes into a home, then takes off from police. police say 20-year-old davonte williams slammed into a house in the florida block of carrollton drive this morning. he then fled the scene. police found him a short time later and arrested him for dui. no one inside the house was hurt. many soldiers come back from war to find they don't have a job. tonight, andrea fujii explains, there's now a national and local movement for local employers to hire active

military veterans. >> reporter: from hero to hired, the maryland national guard held its first-ever job fair for active mill military and veterans. >> many of our veterans have recently deployed, come back. they have not gone out actively looking for a job, knowing they would be deployed. >> reporter: staff sergeant thomas red linger believes he was passed up for promotions because of his service to the country. >> with all my deployments. and military and schools and things of that nature, i was just kind of stuck in a rut. >> reporter: he's now hoping to find a right fit, with the 25 public and private organizations here. i.t. company tanninger is one of the ones that recognize the special sets military personnel offer. >> they bring a dedication that sometimes you can't find in the civilian sector. >> michelle obama and dr. jill

rainfall totals. rain is moving in from the west. as you're starting to look out towards the western sky, we're definitely seeing a good bit of shower activity. thunderstorms making their way towards hagerstown. up toward the stateline. and making their way on in. the leading edge of it is still getting eaten up by the high pressure that is still in control. we're coming down from a daytime high in the low 80s, believe it or not. 77 degrees right now. 64 in ocean city. and you're not -- don't adjust your set. you're seeing 45 out in oakland. that is because colder air is moving into the region. and if you wonder how chilly that air is going to be, mixed in with the rain we're expecting, up to 3 inches in some parts of the area. there is a winter storm watch in effect, late tomorrow night, through monday, for parts of allegheny and garrett county. up to 6 inches of snow expected out in our higher elevations. we'll tell you how this impacts us coming up in your forecast.

back in baltimore. after a trip around the world other a young sailor docks his boat. [ cheering ] >> the crowd cheered as matt rutherford pulled into annapolis today. the sailor successfully circumnavigated the americas alone. that's a 20,000-mile voyage around north and south america. now, he's the first person to ever make the 314-day solo. he tells wjz, he's happy with his trip, but glad to be home for several reasons. >> ribs, beer, shower. yeah, now i can talk to people. >> on his historic voyage, rutherford raised $250,000 for chesapeake region accessible boating. that's a nonprofit program for accessibility for people with disabilities. proud monkey parents gave birth to their first child today. it's not clear what the little

dozens of angry students storm a montral convention center, smashing windows lighting fires along the way. the group is protesting a large part of northern quebec and raise tuition. at least one officer was hurt in the violence. about a dozen students were arrested. a bad crash leaves a person dead in hue high. witnesses say this tour bus struck a car that was perp endicular on the road, bringing traffic to a standstill near the city of amherst. it prompted some of the passengers to rush to the front of the bus to help. at least 10 people are being treated at the hospital. investigators are still trying to determine what caused that crash.

a california man is behind bars, after plunging a stolen minivan off the edge of a cliff with his wife in the passenger's seat. take a look. police were chasing the man when he drove down an embankment and crashed. somehow, he managed to escape before police arrived. the 44-year-old was later arrested and charged with attempted murder. the search continues for the body of a missing boy who disappeared in manhattan more than 30 years ago. 6-year-old etan pats was last seen in 1979. but recent interest in a carpenter has prompted officials to relaunch the case. investigators searched the basement of this building, using a cadaver dog today. pats allegedly met the carpenter the day before he vanished. it's a big day for queen elizabeth. she turns 86 years old. the queen is reportedly spending time with family. but there will be a public celebration in june. the big day comes as britain also celebrates the queen's diamond jubilee. in september 2015, she will

a very calm inner harbor. you can see the reflection shows the skies are getting gray. that will be with us pretty much all the way through the rest of the weekend. once the rain starts, it stays with us really through the week. the leading edge right now is starting to move on into the western counties. frederick, hagerstown, all starting to see pretty bright colors there. thunderstorms embedded in this rain. it is not necessarily this batch that is going to bring up the major soaking that we're expecting. although we could expect to see some thunderstorms in this. hear some rumbles of thunder as well. but there's another batch to the south that is going to bring us pretty soaking rain tomorrow into monday. and we'll talk about that here in just a second. right now, temperatures coming down from a daytime high of 81 degrees. 53, the overnight low. we are well above our average highs of 67. and average overnight low of 44. not quite the record but very close. what we have now are temperatures around the state. in the 50s out in western maryland. 64 on the shore.

77 in d.c., and over in easton. 70s all around the immediate metro area. 74 in kent island and annapolis. 73 in bel air. southeast flow is bringing in still some warm air across bwi marshall. the winds are starting to shift, though, you can see a bit of a north and northwest flow, as that rain is starting to move on in. all of the winds are starting to pick up a little bit. 21-mile-per-hour winds from the south around d.c. and that's what we and expect to see as this front gets closer and starts to move toward the state. the winds are starting to pick up. it is this batch of moisture down around the gulf that is starting to ride around the coastline. it will combine with this front to the west. we'll have a combined bit of a sandwich here, as the rain starts to overrun the state. and this low is going to sit as pretty much an active nor'easter as it sits past the delmarva and up around the jersey shore. we're going to see winds pick up through tomorrow and monday as well. get the gusty. and on the back edge, cooler air moves on in. and as you see, we have a winter storm watch in effect for our higher elevations.
