unthinkable crime. a baby stabbed with a knife, inside a baltimore social services office. >> who police arrested and how the infant is doing. >> hi, everybody. i'm mary bubala. >> i'm kai jackson. here's what people are talking about. >> case workers and staff watched in stunned disbelief. an 8-month-old baby girl, covered in blood, her own mother holding the knife. wjz is live at johns hopkins hospital, where the child is being treated. mike schuh explains what happened. mike, this is such a horrible story. >> reporter: mary, indeed, it is. and the little girl is here at hopkins, with wounds to her neck and to her head. her mother is in custody. >> reporter: behind these doors, a gruesome scene. ama dendy looked across the

street. >> the employees, they were hysterical, they were running outside, crying. >> they were running the state office, which runs the foster care for the city. it's here, where parents are allowed to visit the children they had taken away from them. >> the baby's mom was visiting with the baby and a social worker here at the location. at some point, the mother became irate, pulled out a long kitchen knife, and began stabbing the baby. >> when police arrived, they arrest the baby's mother. >> i can't believe the baby got stabbed. >> reporter: soon, the baby and the mom, are taken away in separate ambulances. >> we do have the mother in custody. she's being questioned. we have to check on her mental stability as well. >> reporter: the fire department says the quick actions of the two paramedics who responded to the scene, to control the baby's bleeding, may have saved that baby's life. she is here at hopkins, in critical condition. mike schuh, reporting live, mary, back to you. >> all right, mike.

thank you. the mother is currently undergoing a mental evaluation. she will not face any charges until that is complete. breaking news. a third arrest in the shocking beating of a man outside a baltimore courthouse. deangelo carter is in custody, wanted with the st. patrick's day assault. the victim was waiting at a bus stop, when a group robbed and beat him, then stripped him naked. silent killer. five people dead in a carbon monoxide poisoning in prince george's county. denise is in the newsroom with the story. >> those five victims are all found in a home in oxon hill. two were found dead by family members. firefighters rushed to the scene and found the bodies of three other victims, extraordinarily high levels of carbon monoxide gas was found inside the home. the odorless, colorless gas was rated at 550 parts per million. a normal reading would be 5

parts per million. >> no word yet. >> two dogs chased children. now, neighbors there say those dogs are still at large, even though they know who the owners are. >> reporter: andre hawthorne is recovering from injuries after use his body as a human shield. >> i threw my left arm up to the dog. so i was using my right hand to punch on him. >> two big dogs. hit in the side of the eye. they weren't going for nothing. >> reporter: the two dogs pinned hawthorne. one clamped down on each arm. >> started shaking him like he was a rag. >> reporter: a neighbor's surveillance video shows the dog on the attack. two teens jump on top of a car to get away. but one of the dogs follows, right after 11-year-old xavier bryant. >> i kept running. >> you saw the dogs jump on the car after him, what were you thinking? >> i was thinking i was

literally about to lose my son. then i opened our building door, and let him run in. and the dog came running in behind him. >> i just saw the two of them in danger. and i automatically reacted. >> reporter: hawthorne had a knife and was unable to injur the -- injury the dogs. -- injure the dogs. >> i'm glad i'm alive. >> neighbors say they are scared of these dogs and concerned because a home day care center is across the street from where this all happened. d.c. animal control say its is investigating the attack. the trial of the baltimore brothers accused of attacking an african american teenager in park heights will be decided by a judge, not a jury. alex demetrick is following the developments in this case. alex? >> reporter: well, kai, defense attorneys are granted a bench trial. the brothers who are jewish, are accused of beating an african american teen, while patrolling their northwest baltimore neighborhood. they say they acted in self-

defense when the teen got violent. the defense also tried to argue the werdesheims could not get a fair trial because of similar similarities to the trayvon martin case. a few moments later, the judge threw out a piece of evidence trying to identify the boys. >> we'll have more coming up at 5:00 and 6:00. maryland senate president says a special session could happen in mid-may. it comes with michael bush and governor martin o'malley at the state house this morning. an increase income tax deal fell apart. if no deal is reached, a so- called doomsday budget takes place with $500 million in cuts. romney is expected to win it all. he's expected to secure enough delegates to win the gop nomination.

police when a woman approaches his van and climbs inside through an open window. the van eventually pulled over. and the woman surrendered. it took a police dog to persuade the driver from the van. he came out, followed by a shower of cash. both are facing charges. a close call for two california firefighters. take a look at the scene in yorba linda. they were checking out a small fire inside a manhole, when an electrical equipment vault suddenly explodes in their faces. the firefighters were blown off their feet. amazingly, those two always suffered minor post offices. a disturbing attack caught on tape in florida. tammie fields has more on a mcdonald's customer, who went after the manager on duty. >> reporter: watch towards the right of your screen as a man jumps right over the counter of this mcdonald's fast food restaurant. with a bat in his hand, lakeland police say what it doesn't pick up is it hitting

him in the back. 911 calls started coming in almost immediately. >> 911, what's your emergency? >> i need a car now. we should someone who jumped over the counter ask started beating my manager with a bat. >> reporter: the same mcdonald's employee says what she saw moments earlier. >> was he trying to get money? >> no. he was mad because we. [ indiscernible ] he was standing like he had to have his order to be taken. and he started flipping out, jumped over the counter and started beating the manager. >> reporter: lakeland police say when the manager realized the customer had been overlooked, he tried to help him. but the same thing happened the previous day. he asked for the corporate number to mcdonald's, and the manager gave it to him. but he threw it down. and 20 minutes later, he was back with a bat in hand.

a live look outside. kai, you just came in. >> yeah. i thought it was nice outside. pleasant. >> much better after the last couple of days. i guess we needed the rain. but it wasn't the prettiest of weather around here. but that is all gone, off to our north, want to show you first warning doppler radar. there are a lot of showers off to the north with that storm still. and just over the last hour or so, they're starting to make their way over to the border. so we still have a chance for clouds building up that could lead to a shower or two over the next two hours. but anything does die down overnight. we'll switch it over and show you. sunshine earlier today. now we have the clouds coming from the north. just a few showers with those clouds. winds have turned around to the southwest with everything going on. and that's been a warmer wind for us. we're up to 60 degrees now.

60s across most of the east. but still hanging onto 49 in oakland. compared to yesterday at this time, it is 15 degrees warmer. now, even though we've warmed up, we're still below average. 61 has been our high so far on the day. yesterday, we only got to 50 degrees. tomorrow, we will be closer to that average. and then above it by wednesday. this is why. this storm leaves us. we get a nice break in the action. then we've got another storm on the way thursday. before that happens, that's when temperatures are going to jump up. but on thursday, as that storm moves away, it's going to bring in another round of very-needed rain to maryland. that gets out of here and sets the stage for a pretty unsettled weather pattern as we head into the weekend. there's going to be a couple of different storms that dive through the midwest and out through the midatlantic before heading out to the ocean. while that's happening, they're going to get very strung out. and this could set up just to the south. and we wouldn't get very much out of it. the way it's looking now, they're going to move on top of us. and if that happens, we've got

i'm very concerned about that. >> it could take months for the federal investigation into martin's death to be complete. for now, chief lee's future is in limbo. chilling testimony in the trial of the man charged with killing several family members of oscar-winning actress and singer jennifer hudson. kai has the latest on this high- profile case. >> reporter: police created a stir. william balfour, the ex-husband of hudson's sister, is accused of killing her mother, brother and nephew in 2009. jennifer hudson cried on the stand, telling the jury that her family didn't want her sister to marry balfour, and how he threatened them when they broke up. his defense says there is mow dna -- no dna evidence linking him to the crimes. >> thank you, kai. if convicted of at least two of the murder counts, balfour would face a mandatory life sentence. army private accused of engineering the largest leaks

in history. lawyers are arguing that charges should be dismissed. he's accused of leaking thousands of classified war documents to the wikileaks website. the hearing is taking place in fort meade. a former aide is sharing intimate detailstails about john edwards' affair and how they tried to cover it up during the 2008 campaign. this is the latest from court. >> reporter: the prosecution star witness, andrew young, came to court and zeroed in on the heart of the case against john edwards. that the former presidential candidate used illegal campaign contributions to cover up his affair with rielle hunter. edwards insist they speak in code about some payments. because, quote, he couldn't know about this in case he had to be sworn in as attorney general. >> this claim that john edwards would be speaking in code, in order to be appointed attorney general, it suggests that he might have known that these

contributions were illegal. and that's a key part of the government's case. >> reporter: young also testified that when edwards heard hunter was pregnant, he made a derogatory comment about her, saying there was a, quote, only one in three chance it was his child. >> reporter: young threatened to go public. so they used $1 million in donations to support hunter's lifestyle. >> reporter: and for a time, hunter used the alias jaya james. but the defense insists while edwards may have explicitted a -- committed a sin, he's not guilty of any crime. >> if you have a mistress and you're flying her away from your wife, is it really connect to -- connected to your campaign and. >> reporter: in greensboro, north carolina, dick brennan, wjz eyewitness news. >> edwards is expected to

attack his credibility. at one point, he faked that he was the father of hunter's baby. and at one point, he well l -- even lived with her. building was built of explosive chemicals. neighbors were evacuated as a precaution. no one was hurt. another disturbing case of animal cruelty in anne arundel county. >> well, denise, animal control officers got an anonymous tip from someone. the dog's owner was trying to neuter the dog. the responding officer found the 4-month-old puppy, named cola, at a home in severn. he immediately needed veteran attention and was given a proper neutering and treated for internal infection. animal control wants to remind the public if they cannot afford medical care for their pets, they should ask for help from their local vet or animal

shelter. >> cola is expected to make a full recovery. catching a woman trying to smuggle cotain into the u.s. -- cocaine into the u.s. take a look at the four pounds hidden in chocolate bars and drinks. because she is a legitimate courier from guatemala, she was not charged, but is banned from entering the united states for five states. an inexpensive way to add fun in the backyard. but the nation's consumer safety agency has an early- warning for parents, concerning a portable pool. karen kai looks at some of the hazards. >> reporter: the warm spring in some parts of the country. the consumer product safety commission is urging parents to prepare for pool safety early. in particular, consumers eyeing a purchase of a portable pool. ranging from blowup kiddie pools to larger models. they're cheaper and require

less maintenance. but the head of the consumer product safety commission says they can pose risks, too. >> portable pools become more affordable. but they hold thousands of gallons of water. and so parents need to know that they need to take the same simple steps to save lives if they're going to use a portable pool. >> the cpsc advises owners to empty pools after every use and have a place to store them. larger pools should have a cover. and the ladders should be stowed when not in use. and learn other life-saving skills in case of an emergency. children can drown in a very small amount of water. that's why concern children should never be left unattended in a pool, no matter how small. >> reporter: they also warn neighbors about a temporary pool in the yard in the summer. >> children should always be supervised while swimming. a live look outside right now. sunny and milder today. but you'll need a light jacket if you're heading out tonight.

wjz has weather and traffic together. bob is here with the updated numbers. bob? >> reporter: beautiful, sunny day. until about an hour or two ago. clouds have come in. a few showers or sprinkles to the north of us. not a whole lot with this. but it's possible, a few folks may see a brief little shower, coming down from pennsylvania. but it's not going to last long. but it may just wet your windshield. take a look at temperatures right now. compared to yesterday, it is a lot milder, but it's still about 6 or 7 degrees below average. 50 if elkton. 63 in easton. but these temperatures this afternoon, running anywhere from as you can see, six to 12, 17 degrees warmer than yesterday. that's how cold yesterday was. in fact, dulles airport never got above 47, which actually was a record low maximum for that region. looks like we've got warmer air. but with that, a chance of showers coming from the forecast. >> let's check in on the roads now with kristy breslin at wjz traffic control.

she is charged with murdering a young mother and kidnapping her newborn baby. a judge has denied bail for verna mcclain. prosecutor says she recently had a miscarriage and was looking for a baby to pass off as her own. she is now undergoing a mental evaluation. a funeral for the victim will be held later today. a bittersweet day for a michigan family, after a young woman gives birth to twins, weeks after she is declared brain dead. mary has more on how the doctors saved the children's lives. >> the woman collapsed just hours after she told her family she was pregnant. doctors for christ own bolden

but it's very dry, once again. dew points way down to 23 degrees. humidity, only 23%. that's a pretty dry air mass. that's why we had some sun this morning. in fact, lots of sunshine. we had clouds coming through now. maybe a sprinkle in a couple of spots. mainly north of that area. south/southwest winds at 8. barometer rising. 29.57 inches employs right now, -- inches. right now, the cool spot. snow is pretty much melted. and the sun was out for a while. 55 out in cumberland. but yesterday, you know, frostburg had 2 to 3 inches. lots of garrett county had 2, 4, 5, as much as 8 or 9 inches in some of the higher peaks. most of that is gone. 60 in washington. 60 in ocean city. the high april sun does help them out. 62 down in pax river. but once again, it's a very dry air mass. to our north, there's been a couple of sprinkles across southern pa. chances of getting that into the baltimore regionux not -- region, not great.

but it's possible in the next hour or two. 61, 37 today. now, tonight, in allegheny, around the frostburg area, and in portions of west virginia, again, temperatures down around freezing. even have a freeze warning for those folks. although since it snowed yesterday, i assume people haven't put tender plants out yet. it's just too cold. 68, 45 now. the record, and -- right now, southwest winds in the region. tomorrow, probably a little stronger. but actually, you think tomorrow is going to be a little warmer. because the low is finally pulling out over the entire united states. moving into eastern canada. and the wins go a little more to the -- winds go a little more to the west and southwest. dryer conditions. you can still see. look at that. lake-effect snow. cold air in the 30s. spotty rain showers. the sun did come out. and all of this cold air aloft. and this little line of showers

across pennsylvania. most of it is going to dry up. as i mentioned, sprinkles of sun. looks like thursday, with the warm front developing across the area. good chance we'll see scattered showers and maybe a thundershower or two thursday. cold front is going to go through. more chance of showers. and that front is going to stall out to our south, which means an increased chance of shower activity again maybe by the weekend. west winds on the bay, gusting to 20 knots. bay temp around 57. tonight, not a bad night. a little chilly there. 39. clear to partly cloudy skies. any brief sprinkles over by about 8:00, 9:00. breezy and warmer. not a nice afternoon. close to the normal high. 68 degrees. but on thursday. more showers, maybe a thunder by thursday afternoon. so we're going to make up the deficit once again. we still have the deficit, rainfallwise for the year. >> okay. thank you, bob. still to come on eyewitness news tonight. i'm mike schuh in baltimore. a mother and her 8-month-old child are inside a city social
