her 20s or 30s, is in police custody. >> reporter: behind these doors, a gruesome scene. >> the lady stabbed the baby in the eye. >> reporter: ahmad dendy looked across has street. >> the employees were hysterical, running out, hysterical, crying. >> the police showed up, they were running out the cars. >> reporter: they were running the state foster care for the city. it's here, where parents are avowed to visit -- allowed to visit the children they had taken from them. >> the baby's mom was visiting with the baby and a social worker here at this location. at some point, the mother became irate, pulled out a long kitchen knife and began stabbing the baby. >> i can't believe the baby got stabbed. it's just fine. >> reporter: soon, the baby and the mom are taken away in separate ambulances. >> we do have the mother in custody. she is being questioned. we have to check on her mental stability as well. >> you know, they were probably

already in a bad situation if they were over there. so then she was able to come in there, and you know, do harm to the child. so it's like, where are the children safe? you know what i'm saying? >> neither police nor the social worker could say if the mother stopped stabbing on her own or if someone interceded. >> we don't know why she became irate. we just know we have a baby, stabbed, in the hospital. the baby is okay. >> reporter: the state is investigating not only how that woman could have gotten a knife inside. but also whether their prers -- procedures are adequate. mary, back to you. >> the mother has not yet been charged. >> five people are found dead inside a maryland home. and police believe carbon monoxide poisoning is to blame. >> reporter: two of the victims are found by a relative who showed up to check on them. firefighter the later found three more bodies on shelby

drive in oxon hill. they are focusing on a faulty furnace that may have been turned on during yesterday's colder weather. so far, investigator says there is no indication of foul play. >> the victims include three men and two women. fire officials could not find any carbon monoxide detectors in the house. another arrest in the brutal beating caught on tape in downtown baltimore. police say they took deangelo carter into custody around 3:30 this afternoon. he is the third person to be arrested in connection with the attack on st. patrick's day. detectives say the group beat and robbed a tourist. police are still searching for a fourth suspect, shataya baldwin. well, after several delays, the trial is finally getting under way for the brothers accused of beating an african american teen during a neighborhood watch. wjz is live at the mitchell courthouse. weijia jiang, closely following the story and how it is being compared to the trayvon martin case. weijia? >> reporter: in both cases,

there is serious questions about whether the attacks were motivated by race. in fact, the defense attorney says people are so outraged by both that it's going to impact what happens in court. >> reporter: a trial is expected to begin wednesday in the case against brothers, 24- year-old eli yahoo and 21-year- oldafi werdesheim, accused of beating a 15-year-old in 2010. they attacked the baltimore park heights community. questions immediately surfaced into whether the violence was racially motivated. >> i think we represent every young person in the city, who has these types of atrocities taking place every day. >> reporter: the werdesheims are jewish. they were part of an orthodox jewish watch group. the victim is african american. charges documents say he told the teen, you don't belong here, end quote. >> this isn't a hate crime. this isn't anything more than a

disputed fact between two people over a relatively minor misdemeanor charge. >> reporter: in any case, the case has been linked to trayvon martin's case in florida. there, george zimmerman is charged with the 17-year-old's murder, accused of racially profiling martin as a neighborhood watch captain. in fact, werdesheim's lawyers called the similarities both symbolic and significant. they're expected to ask a judge to rule instead of a jury, claiming it would be difficult to find a jury that is impartial. in both cases, the defense -- defendants said they were acting in self-defense. but during pretrial, the victim said he was cornered, slammed to the ground and beaten. >> reporter: right now, both sides are wrapping up pretrial motions. the defense is trying to put together evidence for when the trial officially gips, likely tomorrow morning. -- begins, likely tomorrow morning. both brothers face multiple

charges, including false imprisonment and assault. police say an abused puppy is rescued in anne arundel county. police say they attempted to neuter their golden retriever without medical assistance. the dog received emergency care, and charms are pending -- charges are pending against the owner. drugs hidden in chocolate bar, and juice boxes. in total, four pounds of cocaine, discovered inside a woman's suitcase, after she arrived on a flight from el salvador. the drugs have a street value of $130,000. officers received the woman from the united states. the ice may be cracking. and the house senate ended the stalemate. governor martin o'malley met with leaders of both chambers this morning, about calling a special session. wjz is live. political reporter pat warren has the results of that meeting.

>> the governor described the breakfast meeting as congenial. the governor, house speaker, president of the senate, are all engaged now. but like many, no date has been set. although it's been narrowed dow jones to the middle of may. >> reporter: governor o'malley met with the house and senate two weeks after a compromise fell apart. and time enough for what has been called a cooling off period to take place. >> have you had what's called that cooling off period that is being talked about immediately after the session? >> i don't know. the cooling off, i guess that's one way to describe it. look, we're kind of under the clock right now. >> reporter: that ticking clock is illustrated in a model created by the state education association, that shows how many days, hours and minutes remain until budget cuts take place. when asked how far apart from a compromise they are, he joked. >> they were sitting opposite sides of each other. i mean, they were right next to each other. i was like this far away from

april. meteorologist bernadette woods and bob turk are updating our temperatures. let's start with bob. >> we have clouds that came in about an hour or two ago. and a couple of sprinkles showing up on radar, to the northwest of us. a little batch here in frederick county. and some off to the north and east. it's possible, a few folks might see a sprinkle or a shower. pushing out about 7. not that's about it. temperature-wise, right now, we're still at 60. that's pretty much been our high for the day. 51 in oakland. the snow is pretty much gone out there. 57, ocean city. and 56 up in cumberland. but today's temps are running -- look at this. 14 degrees warmer than yesterday. d.c., 18 degrees warmer. that just shows you how cold it was yesterday. and wet as well. bernadette has now a look at the updated rainfall numbers. bernadette? >> that's right. wjz drought watch continues to track these numbers. and we're going to continue to take a look at april here. we just got a good dose of

came to court and zeroed in on the heart of the case against john edwards. that the former presidential candidate used illegal campaign contributions to cover up his affair with rielle hunter. the former campaign aide said they insisted on speaking in code about some payments because, quote, he couldn't know about this, in case he had to be sworn in as attorney general, a reference to his cabinet hopes. >> this idea that they had to speak in code, it suggests that he might have known that these contributions were illegal. and that's a key part of the government's case. >> reporter: young also testified that when edwards heard hunter was pregnant, he made a derogatory comment about her, saying there was a, quote, only one in three chance it was his child. young testified that hunter threatened to go public, and sew they used nearly $1 million in donations donations from wealthy supporters to keep hunter in a lavish lifestyle.

breezy, warmer day. sunny to partly cloudy. 68. and clouds tomorrow night. showers back here on thursday. >> all right, bob. thank you. we have breaking news out of north baltimore. sky eye chopper 13 is over the scene of a rescue. let's go to captain mike perry. captain mike? >> rescue operations just wrapping up, kai. we're here in the vitint of -- vicinity of falls road at the jones falls expressway. this goes underneath of the exit ramp there off the expressway, opto falls road -- onto falls road. apparently a person stumbled down. he was trapped there briefly. firefighters were able to get him into a stokes basket. they needed to call rescue 1. a piece of fire apparatus to assist them with this angle. the slope here so steep, the fireman could not get him back up to clipper mill road. placed in the waiting ambulance. he's going to be transported to

it is just after 5:30. 60 degrees and partly cloudy. good evening, everybody. thank you for staying with wjz. eyewitness news. here are some of the stories people are talking about tonight. two dogs chased and attacked children and an adult in our nation's capital. it is caught on tape in washington's trinidad neighborhood. now, neighbor say those dogs are still at large, even though they know who the owners are. >> reporter: andre hawthorne is recovering from injuries after using his body as a human shield. >> so i threw my left arm up to the dog.

so while she was griping this way, i was using my right-hand to punch on him. >> two big dogs stabbed in the head. they weren't going for nothing. >> reporter: two dogs pinned hawthorne. one clamped down on each arm. >> started shaking him like he was a rag. >> reporter: a neighbor's surveillance video shows the dog on the attack, charging after children. two teens jump on top of a car to get away, but one of the dogs follows right after 11- year-old xavier bryant. >> i just kept running. when you saw the dogs jump on the car after him, what were you thinking? >> i was thinking i was literally about to lose my son. then i opened our building door and let him run in. and the dog came running in behind him. >> i just think it's dangerous. and i just automatically reacted. >> reporter: hawthorne grabbed a knife and was able to injure the dogs, but they wouldn't let go until a neighbor came after them with a bat. >> i'm glad i'm still alive.

>> reporter: neighbors say they are scared of these dogs, concerned also because a day care is located just across the street from where all of this happened. d.c. an pal control says it -- animal control say its is investigating the cas. -- the case. a new case of mad cow disease. a dairy cow is infected at a plant in hanford, california. but the animal did not enter the food chain. and u.s. meat and will dairy supplies are safe. the fourth case in recent years. more fallout in the secret service sex scandal. three more secret service employees have been out. this brings a total of nine who have been fired or forced to resign. a number of others are being investigated. the justice department makes a first arrest, related to the gulf oil spill.

former bp engineer is accused of destroying evidence, connected to the disaster in april of 2010, when a rig exploded and set off a massive oil leak. investigators say 50-year-old curt mix of texas deleted a string of text messages that involved information about efforts to cap the leaking well. so far, bp has no comment. two firefighters lucky to be alive tonight, after they are caught in an explosion. denise is in the newsroom with their incredible story. denise? >> the blast literally blew the firefighters off their feet. watch closely. the men were responding to an underground fire when the explosion happened, you just saw, in yorba linda. the fire captain was blown 10 feet into the air and fell into a flower bed. the next thing he remembers, he success dragged to -- being dragged is safety by his fellow firefighters. >> this was caught on the police cruiser's dash cam. new twist in the trayvon

martin case, while george zimmerman is in hiding, the lead prosecutor tries to quit. but city leaders turn him down, at least for now. >> reporter: sanford city commissioners had to decide bl to accept the resignation of police chief bill lee. his department became a flashpoint, heavily criticized when it investigated trayvon martin's killing, but never arrested his admitted killer. >> the whole idea is for the community to come together. what i propose today is one of the ways i think would move the city forward. >> reporter: but the chief's supporters pressured them not to scapegoat the chief. and they voted 3-2 to avoid resignation. >> approve to deny the memorandum at this time. [ applause ] >> reporter: george zimmerman, released on bond, has gone into hiding.

out of jail, police won't protect him. he's responsible for his own safety. his lawyer says zimmerman can't afford private security. so they'll accept offers of donations from various supporters. >> he's out and exposed. so i'm just hopeful we can keep him safe. and truly hopeful that people will let is work and find out exactly what happened. i think when we do, then the emotions may resolve themselves a bit. >> reporter: across the country, the case has struck a nerve. just recently, there were two separate beatings. one in chicago. another in mobile, alabama. in both cases, the attackers claimed they were at least parlly motivated-- partially moltivated. >> we have to think, is this the way we want america to receive this and react to it? do we really want the violence level to go up between people because of this case? i'm very concerned about that. >> it could take months for the federal investigation into martin's death to be complete. for now, chief lee's future is in limbo. could the prime suspect in

the disappearance of natalee holloway, be extradited back to the u.s.? joran van der sloot is sentenced. but u.s. prosecutors want to put van der sloot on trial here for extortion and wire fraud charges. he's accused of demanding a quarter million dollars from holloway's mother, in exchange for information about the location of her daughter's body. but the information he gave, according to authorities, was false. a pretrial hearing continues here in maryland for the army private accused of engineering the largest leak of government secrets in u.s. history. lawyers for private bradley manning are arguing the charges should be dismissed. he's accused of leaking thousands of classified war documents to the website wikileaks. his trial hasn't been scheduled. the hear suggest taking place at fort meade. it went to three alarms. but a fire put others at risk. more information about the chemicals inside the burning building. >> reporter: firefighters knew early on that sunday night's

three-alarm fire at the company involved potentially dangerous chemicals. >> the chemicals that they use on a daily basis are hazardous. >> reporter: so more than fire was the focus of the attack. and specialists were called out. >> we'll be there in about five. >> reporter: people downwind were evacuated briefly, as a precaution. the immediate worry -- >> there were a couple of containers inside. approximately 650 gallon containers that contain sulfuric acid. >> i was afraid a little bit of what was in there, they were talking about. >> reporter: but it turns out, there there was a lot more than the acids sitting at the heart of the fire. >> about 8,000 gallons that are typically used in plating operations. >> reporter: in photos obtained by wjz, most were stored away from the worst of the fire and remained intact. but where the building burned, water flushed some acids out into storm drains. to dilute it, maryland's department of the environment

added more water. >> we were looking for distress in the aquatic life. we didn't see any. so we don't believe there was any environmental damage. >> reporter: any chemical still intact will have to be removed. >> safely get into the building to get out the chemicals. and then pump out or otherwise remove the chemicals. >> i hope so. i hope they get them out. it's kind of worrisome. >> reporter: alexalex demetrick, wjz eyewitness news. >> according to baltimore city fire, no one was injured during the three hours it took to contain the fires and the chemicals. serious concerns about the future of social security and medicare. the programs could run out of money sooner than expected. social security trust funds will likely run dry in 2033. that's three years earlier than previously projected. social security disability could run out by 2016. and medicare's hospital funds could be out of money by 2044.

the yacht capsized into rocks this month. rescue crews were able to pull the body of one crewmember from the water. but four others are still missing tonight, presumed to be dead. a major oil spill. it started friday, continues for the weekend. spurting out over 500 tons of oil per day. this bill affected more than 1600 miles of land. it was likely caused by a breakage in the old well that crews were trying to operate. workers are now trying to clean up that mess. shocking video out of china, where a teenager is swallowed up by a sidewalk. take a look. the girl is on her cell phone. when itop opens up-- it opens up. dropping her into the ground below. a taxi driver saw the whole thing happened. both had to be pulled to the surface by firefighters. you see him going here. apparently the sidewalk had been eroded by underground water. both are okay. >> unbelievable. a u.n. visit sparks more

world tabloids shut down after hacking allegations became public last summer. >> knowing what i know now -- >> it's the third time james murdoch had been publicly interrogated about what he knew and when. he stepped down as head of the british arm of the murdoch empire last year. >> reporter: james murdoch spent most of the day, answering questions here at britain's high court. but this is just a warmup act for his father rupert, who will testify on wednesday. >> and don't you think there's a lot of excitement and noise for the son? you wait until dad comes here. the father is the one who really has been at the heart of the empire. and whatever was going on across the whole of the world, including the u.s., that's where it lands at rupert's store. >> reporter: this week focuses on media ethics. at another hearing last summer, a protestor attacked rupert with a pie made of shaving cream. while this inquiry may not see that drama, court watchers can expect two days of intense testimony.

surveillance tape shows a suspect climbing over the counter of a mcdonald's, in lakewood, with a bat in hand. you can't see it. but apparently the man was angry because the manager skipped over him in line. a woman takes matters into her own handsuring during an armed robbery in georgia. the woman says she was in her car, when two men fired a round. that's when she pulled out her own gun and fired back, hitting one of the robbers. that man will be arrested just as soon as he's released from the hospital. police are still looking for the other suspect. still ahead on eyewitness news. i'm mike schuh in east baltimore. a mother and her 8-month-old child are inside a city social services office. the baby is stabbed. the baby is stabbed. the mother is now charged. ,,,,, we love gardening...
