good afternoon. here's what people are still talking about this today. the city woman stabbing her own daughter in front of a social worker at the department of social service office in east baltimore, and the new details that police are releasing about just what did happen. wjz is live with the latest about the attack with a kitchen knife. good afternoon, derrick. >> reporter: hi, doug. we're getting a better picture of the bizarre and scary happening inside that social service office yesterday, and we also now know the name of that young baby girl, her name is pretty diamond, and it's a miracle she's still alive after what she's been through. the question everyone is asking, why would can neara thomas pull out a knife and attack her young baby girl? new information from police might give us some clue into her thinking. according to police reports, thomas did not have custody of her 8-month-old daughter pretty diamond and during a tuesday morning supervised visit in the presence of a social worker, at

the dss office, thomas pulled out a long silver blade with a wooden handle, a kitchen knife, and began attack the child repeatedly, stabbing her. the social worker left the room screaming in terror. that's when one of her male coworkers came in and began throwing chairs at the woman, to stop her and subdue her. witnesses told police they heard thomas saying, lock me up! if i can't have her, no one will! as other coworkers arrived they found the baby lying on the floor with a knife stuck in her neck. they immediately rushed pretty diamond out of the area to medical attention. in all the baby suffered five stab wounds to her head, neck and chest. police say the child is expected to survive. police say they tried to question can neara thomas. she refused to speak and for an attorney. >> thank you very much. wjz is following this case for you and will bring you updates at 4, 5 and 6, and at wjz.com.

another person now behind bars in the beating a tourist. the woman is the four person taken into custody in connection with the tack recorded on a cell phone. baldwin, 18-year-old deangelo carter and two others are facing assault and robbery charges. a veteran city police detective is off the streets accused of taking the law into his own hands. ron max is live with more on why the detective is at the center of an internal affairs investigation. good afternoon, ron. >> reporter: good afternoon, don. police detective daniel thomas nicholson is suspended regarding a case involve. his daughter. his teenage daughter was reported missing on april 20th, when he allegedly went on his own search for his daughter. using his badge to search homes without permission. the mayor spoke to wjz about the case earlier today. >> many of the things that you

bring to the public are things that we brought to you. investigations we've had and will continue because the public needs to know that if an officer operates or acts outside the law we take it seriously and act on it. >> reporter: nicholson's daughter eventually returned home unharmed. don, back to. thank you very much. you may have recognized the name nicholson was the lead detective in the case of missing teen felicia barnes who was later found dead. the sole survivor of a crash in montgomery county last month is facing criminal charges today. police say 18-year-old rico richardson fleeing from police in a stolen car when he crashed no a tree. the three other teens are ted and at this point richardson is charged with stealing that car. the governor is now consider the possibility of holding two special sessions in annapolis. he met with leaders yesterday two weeks after a compromise on a state income tax increase double part on the last david

implicated in it. here's the latest from wjz. >> reporter: homeland security secretary janet napolitano told a senate judiciary panel a thorough and full investigation into the secret service prostitution scandal is underway. >> the allegations are inexcusable and we take them very seriously. >> the incident happened in columbia earlier this month, ahead of the president's trip to the summit of americas. agents are accused of bringing prostitutes to their hotels room. >> to your knowledge is the first time this has happened? >> over the past two and a half years, the secret service office of professional responsibility has not received any such complaints. >> of the 12 agents being investigated, nine are being forced out and three have been cleared of serious wrongdoing. >> nobody wants to see the president security compromised. nobody wants america embarrassed. >> president obama addressed the scandal on nbc's late night

it's pretty sunny and 64 degrees in central maryland right now. your complete forecast still coming up. it's also a big day on capitol hill as the supreme court begins hearing arguments about arizona's immigration law. the just 'tis will decide if the law passed in 2010 infringes on federal authority. it requires police while enforcing any other laws to question the person's immigration status. if they suspect he or she could be in the country illegally. the legislation has certainly left arizona residents divided. >> unfortunately, illegal -- american jobs and [not understandable] >> we don't believe anybody is

illegal. and people are safe tells us people have a right to come into cross borders. >> arizona says the law is consistent with federal immigration policy and is necessary to control illegal immigration in a state that shares a 370-mile long border with mexico. the justices are expected to reach a decision by late june. the federal government brings the first criminal charges connected to the gulf oil spill. former bp engineer curt knicks was arrested and charged with obstruction of justice. investigators say he deleted about 300 text messages that indicated the blown-out well was spewing a lot more crude oil into the gulf than the public was being told. the justice department says its investigation is continuing and more arrests are certainly possible. a new case of mad-cow disease is under investigation out in california. health authorities say the infected cow was never a threat to the nation's food supply. mad-cow disease can cause a fatal brain disease in humans who eat the tainted beef. this is the first new case of

we're expecting rain tonight into tomorrow, even accompanied by a thunderstorm or two. right now the temperatures very nice and this early afternoon. 61 in ocean city. the snow is falling, temperatures are rebounding nicely. we have 55 in oakland, 64 in cumberland, and around the immediate metro area temperatures all in the low to mid-60s. 65 in annapolis. winds west at 16 across central maryland at the airport. double digit wind around the area from the northwest, and eventually the west. sunshine out there coming up in the west a dry air mass moving into the region at least for today but then that changes going into tomorrow. we have low-pressure system that will be moving to our south. and warm air, warm front going to kind of usher it in here over the next 12 hours or so. the pathway for all the showers we're expecting over the weekend really just follows the cloud line here out in the midwest. out in the plain states and that's what will be headed our
