obama outrage. the president's new comments as the first hearing into the secret service prostitution scand begins -- scandal begins. >> hi, everybody. i'm kai jackson. mary bubala is off. today, the prostitution scandal takes center stage on capitol hill. president obama is angry about these accusations. >> homeland security secretary janet napolitano said that investigators will get to the bottom of the secret service prostitution scandal, leaving no stone unturned. >> let me be clear. we will not allow the actions of a few to tarnish the proud legacy of the secret service. >> reporter: napolitano's office is overseeing the investigating office. agents who were preparing for the president's trip to the summit of the americas are accused of bringing prostitutes

back to their hotel room little. >> to your knowledge, is this the first time to date this has happened? >> over the past two years, the secret service office professional responsibility has not received any such complaint. >> reporter: of the 12 agents implicated in the scandal, nine are being forced out. three others have been cleared of serious wrongdoing. republicans are following the investigation closely to plaque sure -- make sure everyone involved is held accountable. >> this has put a black mark on the secret service, and quite frankly, our country. >> reporter: president obama spoke on cbs late night with jimmy fallon. he said the vast majority. secret service do a great job protecting him and his family. >> a couple of knuckleheads shouldn't detract from what they do. but a couple of these guys should not be doing this. >> reporter: and they are

trying to make sure something like this does not happen again. >> reporter: a dozen military personnel are also implicated in the scandal. their security clearance is being withheld while the justice department investigates. a short time ago, several people walked into a barber shop on marlin avenue. the suspects began to argue. one pulled a gun and hit a customer. schools in the area around the 400 block of that area are being placed on alert status as a precaution. wjz is on the scene. we'll have an update on the investigation at 5:00. a fourth suspect in the violent st. patrick's day beating is in custody. denise has more on the suspect and how community involvement led to the arrest. >> well, kai, the video of the beating is vital and should help bring them to justice. 24-year-old shatise. police say she beat the virginia man in the head and the chest with her high-heeled

shoe. the attack happened on st. patrick's day outside of a courthouse. 21-year-old aaron parsons is being held on $100,000 bail. police say he is the one who punched the victim in the face, knocking him to the ground. 18-year-old diangelo carter was arrested yesterday. and 21-year-old sheana davis was arrested last week. police say there could be more arrests once all of the culprits are identified. a mother is in custody, facing charges. she's accused of stabbing her baby in front of a social worker. derek valcourt has details from police. >> reporter: we're getting a better picture of the bizarre and scary happenings inside that social security office yesterday. and we now know the name of that young baby girl. her name is pretty diamond. and it's a miracle she's still alive, after what she's been through. >> the question everyone is asking. why would kenisha thomas pull out a knife and savagely attack her baby girl? new information might give us

insight into what she was thinking. according to polices are she did not have -- she did not have custody of her 8-month-old daughter, pretty diamond. thomas pulled out a long silver blade with a wooden handle, a kitchen knife, and began attacking the child repeatedly, stabbing her. the social worker left the room, screaming in terror. that's when one of her male coworkers came in and began throwing chairs at kenisha thomas, to stop her and eventual he subdue her. witnesses told police, they heard thomas saying, "lock me up." if i can't have her, no one will. they found the baby on the floor with a knife stuck in her neck. they immediately rushed pretty diamond out of the area for medical attention. she suffered five stab wounds in her head, neck and chest. police say she is expected to survive. >> reporter: police tried to question kenisha thomas.

but she refused to speak and asked to speak with her attorney. she now faces a slew of charges. coming up at 5:00, more of the shocking things the suspect reportedly said during the attack. he's sworn to enforce the law. today, a veteran is accused of taking it into his own hands. baltimore city detective, thomas nicholson the fourth. police say he misused his power, investigating his daughter earlier this month. today, mayor stephanie rawlings- blake reacts publicly for the first time. >> the public needs to know if an officer operates or acts outside the law, we're going to take it seriously and act on it. >> his daughter did return home safe. the nicholson was the lead detective, by the way, in the case of missing teen phylicia barnes. damaging testimony today in the trial of former presidential candidate john edwards. dick brandon has more on what edwards' former aide says about the mistress at the center of

the case. >> reporter: the prosecution's star witness, andrew young, spent a third day on the stand, working hard to avoid contact with his former boss. prosecutors are counting on him to make the case that john edwards used illegal campaign contributions to cover up his extramarital affair. young explained how his relationship with edwards collapsed, while he described his so-called life on the run with rile hunty. he also said he -- rielle hunter. he also said that he got into a shouting match with edwards. >> he never looked at the jury. and even in what appeared to be basic questions, he was thinking and rethinking what he was going to say. >> reporter: there n a book he -- in a book he wrote about the case, young acknowledges he received secret donations from donors as gifts, not subject to campaign finance law.

he said i did this to cover my butt because the feds were investigate being. >> reporter: the prosecution must prove that not only did edwards knew about it, but that he knew it was illegal. >> they're going to participate him out to be that he was in it for himself. >> reporter: edwards and his family used the bulk of the money to build a billion and a half-dollar house. young is currently immune. edwards faces up to 30 years in jail if convicted on all charges. unofficial concession. today, newt gingrich makes plans to officially end his campaign for president. gigi barnett has more. >> reporter: hi, kai. well, one day after mitt romney sweeps five more primaries. gingrich is on the campaign trail today in north carolina. a spokesman for the former house speaker said he will officially step down next

right now in central maryland, complete first warning weather forecast is coming up. it's 68 degrees. new video is released of a drive-by shooting in washington state that critically injures a woman. surveillance video shows shots being fired from a white car. 21-year-old nicole westbrook, whose image was blurred out. you can see her hit and fall. police don't believe she was the intended target. the search is on for the driver of a minivan who almost ran over a bike cop. you can see when all of a sudden, a minivan starts coming toward him. the van missing him only by inches. the minivan speeds away from

the scene. police say they are looking for the driver and passenger of the minivan. today's healthwatch. american lung association is out for its annual state report. baltimore is getting cleaner while some parts of the country are getting worse. >> reporter: to a -- on a typical day in los angeles, the pollution is visible in the air. >> you look over and see the smog, blanketing the city. and then you realize, it's really disgusting. >> reporter: but the american lung association's new state of the union report, finds air quality has actually improved in l.a. and in the most polluted cities in the nation. in fact, the air is the cleanest since the report began 13 years ago. >> we have definitely made a lot of progress, since the clean air act was enacted in the 70s. and that is very encouraging. but as the report today highlights, we have a long way to go. >> reporter: the report shows more than 127 million people are living in places with dangerous levels of pollution

harford counties all received fs. wall street gets a passing grade today. markets finish in positive territory, especially the nasdaq. the dow was up 89. s&p up 19. nasdaq up 68. let's go to new york right now, where alexis christoforous has tonight's cbs money watch update. federal reserve policy makers wrapped up their two-day meeting. and there were no surprises. they said the u.s. economy is growing moderately, but did caution that europe remains a big risk. the feds once again pledged to keep interest rates low, to at least 2014. but is holding off on taking any further steps to boost the recovery. during his news conference, fed chief ben bernanke added that the housing market remains weak. and the unemployment rate is not falling as quickly as he had hoped. apple's stocks soared 10%, after delivering a blowout earnings report. the world's most valuable

pieces of evidence. british investigators believe the girl is still alive. >> a spokesperson for the mccanns said that this latest report is no more credible than other tips that proved incorrect over the years. a custodial worker is found dead at a kennedy space center launch pad. it was in a building located under the liquid oxygen tank. a nasa spokesman says a cause of death is not yet known. and the man's identification is not yet being made public. for the second time in less than a week, a passenger jet makes an emergency landing after striking birds. jeff glor reports for wjz, it happened in new york again. >> all right. clear for takeoff. 160 with 571. >> reporter: jet blue flight 571, left for palm beach at 6:45 p.m. and shortly after was struck by at least two birds, forcing a return to the westchester

county airport. >> 571, we gotta come back. we hit two big geese. >> jet blue 571, roger. and stand by. >> reporter: two geese crossed in front of the jet and hit into the windshield, oshstructing the pilot's view. and though no damage was found, they declared an emergency, heading back to base. >> airport 11, taking 1-6. >> jet blue, 571. nice to have you back. >> reporter: the flight landed shortly after 7:00, and there were no reported injuries. the crew and all 54 passengers boarded another plane and took off again for florida about two hours later. >> it was awful. well, everything was confined at first. and then we took off and it was evident we hit something. and the plane kept swerving from left to right. >> oh, my god. i mean, it could have been worse. because if that thing ever went into the engine. it was certainly inconvenient. but as a comparison to what it could have been, we're good. >> reporter: three years ago,

captain chesley sullenberger, famously guided a u.s. airways flight into the water on manhattan's west side, after birds took out both engines also on takeoff. since then, birds have smashed into more than 1700 flights in new york state alone. and this emergency landing is the second such event in the new york area in less than a week. last week, a passengero board a los angeles-bound flight captured this video of a flock of birds before they hit the engine, forcing a return to jfk. >> reporter: and captain sullenberger predicts more strikes, especially around la guardia, with the city building two garbage dumps nearby that will attract more birds. 18-year-old rica richardson is now charged with grand theft auto. police say rich orderson -- richardson was a passenger in march when the driver sped awail.

police reese -- rescued the driver and richardson. three passengers died at the scene. the driver died a short time later. an alleged beating victim is refusing to testify against his accused attackers, two baltimore brothers. cory asked a judge to drop the charges against eliayahu and afi werdesheim. the judge says that is not his decision. they are accused of beating someone in 2010. the brothers say it was self- defense. president obama gets yogurt spilled on him by fans during a campaign stop in colorado. >> whose yogurt got on me? >> i'm really sorry. >> she said, i'm sorry. the yogurt, belonging to an enthusiastic college student, accidentally got flupg on president obama during a meet and greet tuesday. the purple snack hit his pants, which he began promptly wiping off with a napkin. the president, however, was not

upset. >> secret service. >> i'm very sorry, sir. i'm so glad -- >> obama mentioned the incident later today at a campus event, where he was touting his proposal for low-rate student loans. nice warm after days of chilly temperatures. the sun returns to warm things up for us. live look outside now. feeling more like spring again. bob is here now with the numbers from first warning weather. bob? >> right on the normals are the averages for today. believe it or not. but we have things headed our way. take a look at radar. yes, there's shower activity, developing across indiana, ohio, now all the way down to charles ston, west virginia and from chicago all the way down. you can see that shower activity. and thundershowers as well. overnight, into your thursday. we're looking for showers to move back into the region. could be maybe as much as a quarter to a half inch in some spots. temperature-wise, we're right where we should be. we're at 68. d.c. at 70. still kind of chilly in oakland.

the first of four houston police officers charged in the video taped beating of a teenage suspect heads to trial. prosecutors say andrew bloomberg and three other officers were caught on camera last year, kicking and stomping 15-year-old chad holly. defense attorneys allege the high-profile tape will affect bloomberg's chances of a fair while -- trial. the fbi is brought in to help search for the missing 6- year-old arizona girl who disappeared days ago. the move comes as investigators scale back their search. she was last seen by her family in her room friday night.

they are now focusing on local areas like landfill and drainage. the man who cons ifed to fornorway's mass killing. >> anders breivik is slamming a diagnosis that declare him insane. he said it was made to portray him as irrational. a second psychiatric examiner found him insane. they will consider both reports. breivik admits to the bombing of oslo's government district that killed eight people in the subsequent shooting massacre. in a labor department that left 69 dead, most of them teenagers. >> breivik claims the attacks were, quote, necessary. because the victims had betrayed norway by embracing immigration. mad cow disease found in a dairy cow in california.

baker commodity says the cow was randomly selected for testing. the usda says the consumers are not at risk because the cow is not on its way to the food supply. >> the milk supply is safe. this has no affect on the milk. and the meat supply is safe. that that cow did not make it into the food chain. >> the plant says the dead cow is in quarantine until the usda gives it disposal instructions. a woman says she's furious with the transportation security administration, after her daughter is given a patdown at a kansas airport. the woman says her mother set off the alarm, passing through security. she was told to sit and await a patdown. but when her daughter went to give her grandmother a hug, a security officer allegedly implied a handgun had been passed to the little girl. the t.s.a. says agents did follow procedure and never accused the girl of carrying a gun. a 5-year-old boy in need of a heart transplant is found,

safe, after being kidnapped from a st. louis hospital by his father, who does not have custody. police say porter was found. an amber alert was issued after the boy was taken from the hospital yesterday. jeffrey stone and his mother are both charged with kidnapping and other offenses. the drama between pro football hall-of-famer deon sanders and his estranged wife pilar. today, deion is charged with misdemeanor assault, relating to a fight for which his wife was later arrested. >> not many are interested in what a house mother has to say. >> today, they were, after pilar sanders, the estranged wife of former cowboys quarterback, deion sanders, was released from the collin county jail. >> i am innocent. >> reporter: she denied the report that her husband tweeted monday saying she and a friend jumped him inside his prosper house. >> i understand that i have very little chance at beating a
