phylicia barns. >> her sister's ex-boyfriend is in custody. >> hello, again i am jessica kartalija. >> i am don scott. >> here's what people are talking aboutch the major break in the case of a 16-year-old honor student who vanished in baltimore in 2010. just hours ago, police made the first arrest in the case. wjz is live at city police headquarters where mike hellgren is following the developing story. mike. >> reporter: here's what we know many an hour from now, police and prosecutors will hold a news conference right here where we hope to get more answers on the charges that will be filed against michael johnson. he is the man arrested in the investigation and a person who has been interviewed several times by police. phylicia barnes disappearance launched the largest missing person's investigation generating national headlines. the exhaustive search for the teenage honor student involved the homicide squad until she was found dead floating in the susquehanna river. now almost a year and a half

after she disappeared, while visiting her sister in an apartment near the reisterstown road plaza, police have made an arrest. her sister's ex-boyfriend michael johnson, the last person to see her alive. barnes father spoke to me about the impact of his daughter's death. >> for her to be found in a body of water, and where i seen her at, where i seen her body at, no human should ever be be disposed of like that. for her to rest properly we have to make sure justice is served. >> reporter: wjz media partner the baltimore sun reported johnson was the subject of search warrants as federal investigators worked to access his facebook count. his lawyers denies he has involvement in the death and des appearance and believe the timing is connected to a controversy involving the lead detective in the barnes case daniel nickolson suspend over tactics he used while look into the disappearance of his daughter. >> the public needs to know

manning is facing. the defense argued the government piled on multiple charges in an attempt to increase the potential punishment. the judge didn't rule on a motion to dismiss the most serious charge which is aiding the enemy. that offense carries a maximum penalty of life in prison. jessica, back to you. >> thanks. manning's defense team says was a troubled young soldier and should have never been given access to the material to begin with. attorneys for john edwards are turning up the heat on the former campaign aide and chief accuser today. former presidential candidate is accused of using secret payments to support and hide his pregnant mistress during the campaign. here's dick brennen with the latest for wjz. >> reporter: andrew young arrived at the courthouse to face more blister be be cross- examination on the fourth day of testimony. john edwards defense attorney is trying to poke holes in the credibility accusing him of making up stories. edwards is charged with violating campaign finance laws

in order to cover up his affair with rielle hunter. this morning testimony revealed that edward once gave hunter his atm card but when his wife saw a large withdrawal it set off an alarm. edwards made an excuse to cover it up. but asked young to handle rielle finances after that. >> john edwards needs to convince the jury andrew young is lying and therefore can't be trusted on the stand, or that he had some reason to dislike john edwards. >> reporter: young avoid icon tact throughout the testimony while edwards stairs at him. >> it's clear andrew young versus john edwards is the turning point. >> reporter: in cross- examination the defenseasked young if he was the source which broke the story for the national enquirer e said was not. young said edwards asked him to pretend to be the father of the baby and keep a affair -- keep the affair but it was a nightmare runner errands and he had access to malion dollars.

now first warning weathercomplete forecast and first warning of severe weather. >> taking a look at a very kind of foggy and cloudy misty inner harbor. don't see too many of the small boats. there's a small craft' veesry because of the showers and storms moving through the region. and that's going to be in effect through late tonight. we don't extext -- we expect to see improvement but there's no rain around the meet med -- immediate metro and downtown is clear of rain right now. but this is what we are watching moving through for the rest of the afternoon. you can see there are pretty poet ebbet storms.
