more on the suspect and his arrest. >> reporter: denise, this is a bombshell development in this case. the person sitting in jail tonight was once a close family friend. he was also suspected from the start, through his lawyer, he is saying he is innocent and would never do anything to hurt the teenager he once considered his little sister. >> reporter: prosecutors believe they have the murderer of teenage honor student phylicia barnes in custody. michael johnson, the ex- boyfriend of barnes' sister, a man once close to the family, and the last person to see her alive, seen in this mug shot with a black eye. >> we believe we have got the right guy. we do believe it provides some measure of closure. but we have to move forward with the trial. >> reporter: barnes visited with her sister just before christmas 2010. after a massive search that generated national attention and involved most of the homicide squad, investigators found her body floating in the susquehanna river. the state's attorney revealed little about the sealed indictment against johnson, including the motive. but says he is their only

suspect. and believes barnes was killed in baltimore city. >> it would really not be appropriate at all, to comment publicly on the nature of the investigation and the steps that were taken. >> reporter: johnson's lawyer told wjz, his client was like a big brother to barnes. police interviewed him four times and took dna samples; but the last contact with investigators was months ago. and he's aware of no new evidence. and denies any involvement. >> but police, historically, and investigations have always looked to the last person to have seen someone. so i think we all know that. and you know, baltimore city, they made their promise. they said, you know, we believe that you're the person that we're going to get you. >> while questions still surround barnes' appearance, the top prosecutor hopes this gives some sense of justice. >> and johnson's lawyer is also questioning the timing of the arrest, coming just days after the lead detective in the barnes case was suspended in another matter. reporting live at city police headquarters, mike hellgren, wjz eyewitness news. >> all right.

thank you, mike. hours after learning of the arrest in felicia's murder, her family reacts, speaking to wjz. complete coverage continues with jessica kartalija, with more on what they're saying tonight. >> a couple of her family members told me that they thought johnson was involved from the very beginning. and they say his arrest, of course, is a step in the right direction. >> reporter: at city police headquarters, members of phylicia barnes family talk about the arrest of michael johnson, the last person to see her alive. >> i suspected it from the very beginning that it was him. just suspecting someone. that is not enough. that is just -- it is just not enough. >> reporter: johnson, who had taken vacations with the barnes family wasn't victimmed in the search for phylicia, something her father found odd. >> we still have a long way to go. i'm not to make any claims

until this person is behind bars forever. or whatever may be his consequence. maximum punishment, maximum penalty. >> in the a day has gone by that i have not done something. >> reporter: barnes' cousin, harry watson says johnson's arrest is a step in the right direction. these have just a start. it is not something we're going to solve overnight. but this is a start. the arrest of a person that we suspect stole phylicia's life. >> reporter: nu, phylicia's brother remembers her through this photo around his neck. >> would you tell us all of the volunteers and everybody, i don't think it would be possible. >> it doesn't bring her back. but to say it's on our road to justice. >> reporter: and questions still remain. the family says they have no idea how phylicia was killed. her father says he's not sure he wants to know just yet. jessica kartalija, wjz eyewitness news. >> jessica, thank you. members of barnes family here in baltimore say they plan to

attend johnson's bail hearing. updating the breaking news last hour. a stabbing. sky eye chopper 13 was over the intersections of saratoga and utah streets. as the victim was loaded onto the gurney to be taken to the hospital. police just told wjz, that victim is in critical condition. but we do not have word on any arrests or a motive. new developments in another high-profile murder case tonight. a massive lawsuit against george huguely. the man convicted of killing cockeysville native, yeardley love. gigi barnett has the latest. love's mother, sharon love, filed a $20 million lawsuit against george huguely. he was convicted in february of second-degree murder, in connection -- connection with yeardley love's death while both were students in may 2010. prosecutors say love was beaten to death in her off-campus apartment, following an argument with huguely. in court documents, the love family asked for more than 30 million in compensatory and

punitive damages. saying this resulted in the injury and death of their daughter. >> a jury recommended huguely spend 26 years in prison. he will be formally sentenced in august. the trial for brothers accused of beating an african american teen movessed for, one day after the alleged victim refuses to testify. and even asked for charges to be dropped. wjz is live outside the mitchell courthouse. weijia jiang with the latest developments from the courtroom today. weijia? >> reporter: prosecutors are barreling forward with their case, despite that dramatic setback. and they're attempting to paint the defendants as bullies, who may have cry -- tried to cover a few things up. >> reporter: on thursday, prosecutors called on several witnesses in their case against the werdesheim brothers. 24-year-old eliayahu. and 21-year-old avi, are accused of beating a then 15- year-old cory osbee, in 2010. during an orthodox neighborhood watch group.

one witness said he watched the werdesheims follow osbee in their vehicle, telling the teen on foot, he didn't belong in the neighborhood. the witness says osbee was scared. he was petrified. it looked like he wanted to disappear and not be there. >> reporter: the story corroborates what osbee told police during their interview, although he would not testify and told police he believes the charms should be dropped. >> community activist are closely monitoring the trial: >> i think the case is very much in motion. and the general public should know that righteousness will prevail in this case. >> reporter: more powerful testimony came from a former reporter for the baltimore jewish times who admitted he allowed eliayahu to edit an article which included an interview with one of the brothers. he testified that eliayahu cut out several pieces of

information, about his background, with special forces in the israeli army. >> reporter: osbee's mother is filing a case in this case. they are seeking millions of dollars. >> the trial is expected to last for several more days. well, right now, a 6-year- old baltimore boy remains in serious condition, after being struck by a dirt bike in brooklyn. it happened here in the 4200 block of tenth street. the child suffered severe injuries to his head and face. the driver of the dirt spike stopped for just a second -- bike, stopped for just a second, then took off. police are looking for him now. a few days of rain. a few days of sun. now we're looking for more rain. camdien -- camden yards is clearing up a bit. meteorologist tim williams and bob turk are tracking radar and uping the important rainfall totals. saw a little rain this morning. now, a little bit of sun trying to come out. but there are showers to the west. take a look at radar, to the

west of the cumberland area. showers lining up along the front. that's out across western pennsylvania. eastern ohio. it's possible here in baltimore. d.c., annapolis area, probably after 8:00, might see a shower. maybe a rumble of thunder. then it's going to clear out. in fact, tomorrow, looks like a pretty nice day headed our way, with no rain on your friday. take a look at rainfall totals. so far this year, we're still below normal, by 4.27 inches, which is pretty significant. that's over months worth of rain that we still need to get, just to get back up to normal. as far as the month of april, yesterday, had a lot of rain for the weekend. but still about .8 -- let's call it 8/10ths of an inch below normal. normal for the month so far would have been 266. we're only up to 1.85 inches. all right. temperature-wise out there. it's warmed up a little bit. just a little bright sky there. tim has a look at those temperatures. tim? >> we definitely got up into the 60s, despite the fact that we had no sunshine. we're at 64 degrees right now.

we're hitting the hottest point. day. and the sun is actually starting to go down. but the rain has now moved out of here. the winds have been from the south all day long. which has helped to keep a warm flow, right on into the region. 72 out in cumberland. actually one of the warmest spots in our higher elevations. higher elevations in far western maryland. still in the 70s, even at this hour. a few degrees cooler today, at this time, about 4 degrees right now, than we were this time yesterday. keep in mind, too, there is a freeze warning in effect, for garrett and allegheny counties, for tonight. 2:00 a.m. until 9:00 a.m. actually, that's tomorrow morning. but that's because the temperatures are expected to drop drastically through the overnight hours. bob will have the forecast. ravens fans, get ready for a glimpse of the future with the nfl draft set to begin in less than two hours. wjz is live at team headquarters in owings mills. sports director is mark viviano with more on who the ravens might select.

is mostly cloudy. 67 degrees in central maryland now. the complete first warning weather forecast coming up. bail is denied to the 29-year- old mother accused of savagely attacking her 8-month-old baby inside a baltimore social services office. as derek valcourt explains, questions about her mental health are raised during a court hearing. >> reporter: during a bail hearing, the judge called kenisha thomas a danger to herself. he ordered her to undergo a psychiatric evaluation. >> she looked more diss shelved on tuesday when this mug shot was taken after her arrest. for stabbing her infant daughter, pretty diamond,

inside a social services office. thomas did not have custody of her daughter. and was at a supervised visit with her child. stabbed the baby at least five times in the head and neck. witnesses told police, she said lock me up. if i can't have her, no one will. and i hope my baby is dead. >> we can all tell that the suspect has some issues that she has to deal with mental health issues. >> reporter: police credit social sercheszs workers with stopping the attack and saving the baby girl. one of the workers threw a chair at thomas's face and get her away from the baby girl. and now they are looking into how she could sneak a knife past the security and metal detectors. her mental health, now at the center. kenisha thomas, kept her head down the entire time. hair in her eyes. she was rocking side to side and back and forth. at central booking, derek valcourt, wjz eyewitness news. >> and a late check with johns hopkins hospital. the baby is listed in critical

condition. ann arumentdzem county police are looking for the suspect who exposed himself to a woman in pasadena. police say the suspect is a heavyset white male, driving a black jaguar. anybody with information is urged to call police. maryland's top teacher takes a trip to the nation's capital. in tonight's school watch, gigi barnett travels to washington, d.c. and talks to the baltimore english teacher about his chance to meet the president. >> reporter: seven years ago, one of joshua parker's job applications, to a school district in maryland, was denied. today, he is the state teacher of the year. and this week, he's in the nation's capital, to meet the president. >> you always remember your english teacher. better or worse. you always do. >> he wants his students to remember him well. many of them do because he meets with them on the weekends, just to read. it's why he was named the maryland teacher of the year back in october. and this week, parker joined

the nation's other teachers of the year at the white house to meet the president. >> he seems very, very genuine. he asked me about school and the grades. it was only about 40 seconds. but it felt like four minutes. >> parker said he showers them with that kind of attention. and they respond. >> you can listen to a student and not say anything, they will talk to you every day that you're there. because they want to be heard. especially in middle school. >> reporter: parker received the state teacher of the year title because of a reading program he developed for african american boys. they read the classics, novels, and autobiographies and other black male authors, and that sparks deep discussion. >> if i could give them an avenue, to which to express emotions written, i can cut down on maybe domestic violence later on. >> reporter: in addition to meeting the president, parker gets a slew of prizes, including $9,000 in cash. $15,000 in teaching supplies.

spoke with a government agent who said last year, he partied with secret service agents days before president obama arrived. >> our agent says he repeatedly saw the secret service agents exchange money for sexual services within the club. and in at least two occasions, those ages took the prostitutes back to their hotel room. >> reporter: in a statement the secret service says it is aware of additional report the. and that any information assessed as credible will be followed up on in a credible manner. they must comment on a new allegation. but says the president expects high standards from all government employees, traveling overseas. >> reporter: homeland security secretary janet napolitano said that cart henna was an isolated incident. >> over the past 2 1/2 years, the secret service office, a professional responsibility, has not received any such

complaint. >> reporter: at least one lawmaker says the new report raises additional questions. >> it does concern me. and that's why we need a thorough investigation. >> reporter: senator cornin says if the agency doesn't get to the bottom of what happened, congress will. at the white house, tara mergener, wjz eyewitness news. now, the pentagon continues to investigate 12 members. all had to have their clearances suspended, pending the outcome. tonight, police are still looking for a killer. wjz is follow the story from the newsroom. >> reporter: gee barnett has more. -- gigi barnett has more. >> reporter: gary dedricks never got to enjoy his two-week vacation to see washington's historic site. detectives say he was beaten to death and left in an alley in northwest d.c. police suspect that he is a victim of robbery. investigators climb to neighborhood rooftops, searching for a possible murder weapon or other evidence of the

crime. police now say this murder may be related to two nonfatal attacks in that same neighborhood. mary, back to you. >> the victim was visiting from denver, colorado. anne arundel county police arrest two men they say are part of a growing crime trend nationwide. people in glen burnie called police about the suspicious actions of 30-year-old dean zorins and 23-year-old charles flood. officers stopped them in ray rental van and found stolen copper. they each face theft and trespassing charges. a partnership to crack down on contraband items being sold in maryland. the maryland comptroller's office is working to bust people selling contraband cigarettes and other items. 21 people have been arrested in that partnership. and thousands of illegal cigarettes have been seized. governor martin o'malley says he will not call lawmakers back for a special session until they have a deal in place on tax increases.

but as political reporter pat warren explains, there are differents of opinion outside the state house as well. >> the governor, democrat speaker of the house. republicans argue the state is overspending. and can function without additional revenue. they declare taxpayers should be spared an additional tax burden in a time of recession. does maryland need a tax increase or not? >> no. because it hasn't been justified. >> the budget passed by the general assembly this month riduced by $500 million but flishing it out is a mistake. >> as far as i can tell, we're adding these taxes on because we can. and i urge, as a democrat, because it's my party doing this, be very cautious, as far as indiscriminate tax increases. and get the spending and

borrowing under control. consultant says a tax hike is risky. >> we have some of the highest taxes in the country, already, as marylanders. past experience shows that people have a tendency to move out of the state. >> the governor says he won't call a special session, until there is a consensus on a tax increase. i'm pat warren reporting. now, back to you. the governor may have one for the budget. and the other for expanded gambling. meteorologist tim williams is live in the weather center with details. >> two of the three major predictions have come out already. and the most recent is accuweather. that came out today. let's take a look and give you an idea of what they're predicting for the atlantic hurricane season. accuweather is predicting 12 named storms. with five becoming hurricanes. two of those becoming major, which will be category 3 or greater. that's with winds, maximum

winds of 111 miles per hour. or greater, i should say. colorado state has also come out with theirs. theirs is a think tank that is featured with dr. william gray. 10 named storms. four of those becoming hurricanes. and two of those becoming major hurricanes as well. now, in any average season. 11 named storms typically form in the atlantic basin. six become hurricanes. and two of those become major. so they're expecting basic allege an average to calmer, quieter season than we had last season, where we had 19 named storms. the national weather service saturday third of the major releases that will be done this season. this prediction will be on may 24th. and of course, the atlantic hurricane season runs from june 4th to november 30th. time now for a quick look at some of the stories you'll find in the baltimore sun. more on the state's choice to run a casino in maryland. now, day 1 of the nfl draft. and reviews of this week's new

the two then get into a physical fight. one is knocked out. the other, takes off. police believe the fight started after somebody stepped on the other's foot. whoa. the family of the woman accused of being a multimillion dollar madam, is fighting to free her by fundraising. adam christina's family has created a website, help hannah.org for bail. she is being held in lieu of $2 million bail and her family would like her home. christina was arrested in february in manhattan, for promoting prostitution charges. several startling admissions from media mogul rupert murdoch. the chairman and ceo says he and his senior executives were misinformed and kept in the dark. murdoch has claimed some managers at the news of the world attempted to cover up the scandal. but he never knew what they were doing. >> a teenager from a high school in west virginia will be able to go to a senior prom,

after overcast thursday oorving. am things clear up in time for the weekend? we're live with first warning weather coverage. meteorologist tim williams and bob turk are updating the forecast for the next five days. let's first go to tim in the outback. >> unfortunately, they'll clear up and get cloudy again just in time for the weekend. tomorrow, we have actually a very nice day. good bit of sunshine. sun is setting now. going to be clearing through tonight. it will get pretty breezy. temperatures starting in the 40s, going up to about 60 degrees. tapering offer back into the 40s. and then the clouds start to increase, heading into saturday. for the next five days, we send it in to bob. tomorrow looks like a nice day. breezy, a lot of sunshine. much dryer than today. 64, 42. it's going to be chilly tomorrow night. i expect even some suburbs, upper 30s. cloud comes back saturday afternoon. some showers late in the
