dead but still dangerous. the anniversary of the bin laden assassination. the security concerns of the political fallout. >> hi. i'm kai jackson. >> here's what people are talking about. >> one year ago today, navy seals set off on their mission to kill osama bin laden. they succeeded. and bin laden's death is turning into a presidential campaign issue. >> reporter: when president obama announced the death of osama bin laden, nearly a year ago, he called it a moment for national unity. >> today's achievement is a testament to the great accident of our country, and the determination of the american people. >> reporter: one year later, mr. obama's campaign is using the president's decision to order the bin laden as an appointed contrast with his opponent, mitt romney. >> osama bin laden no longer walks on the planet today because of that decision or the brave actions of the men and women in our military.

and quite frankly, mitt rom mitt romney said it was a foolish thing to do. >> reporter: that featured former president bill clinton, in which the campaign asks, whether romney would have made the same call. >> he took the harder and the more honorable path. and the one that produced, in my opinion, the best result. >> reporter: the obama campaign is referencing remarks romney made in 2007 that, it is not worth moving heaven and earth and spending billions of dollars, just trying to catch one person. romney said he was more focused on a comprehensive terrorism strategy. republicans say the obama campaign is exploiting what should be a nonpartisan victory for the country. >> this is one of the reasons president obama has become one of the most divisive presidents in american history. >> he's managed to turn it into a divisive, partisan, political attack. >> reporter: and in a statement statement, senator john mccain,

writes that mr. obama is, quote, doing a shameless end zone dance, to help himself get reelected, unquote. >> for the first time today, the white house acknowledges the covert practices of drone strikes against al qaeda targets. the president says he wants to be more open with americans. three generations killed in a horrifying car crash in new york today. the man who lost seven members of his family reacts. vic is in the newsroom with more. >> azario says he is so shocked, he can't think or feel anything. he said he doesn't want to live. his children, cousin, wife died saturday. their suv plunged into a park. 22-year-old maria gonzalez lost control of the suv. police say gonzalez was speeding when she hit the median. she damaged her tire, sending it bouncing into traffic and over the rail. the children ranged in age from

3 to 10 years old. >> this is the second time this year that a car has gone off the same stretch of the bronx river parkway. the cause of the accident is still under investigation. a montgomery county teen is suing the police department. 18-year-old rico richardson was the front-seat passenger in a fiery accident last month that killed three other teens. the lawsuit alleges a montgomery county police cruiser rammed the teens during the high-speed chase. the teens' vehicle crashed into a tree and burst into flames. richardson is suing for $10 million. after months of delays, the man behind the 2010 election night robocalls goes to trial. derek valcourt has more on the charges julius henson is facing. >> jury selection under way in the henson trial, both sides looking to get a fair jury. because remember, this case is knee-deep in politics. let's take a look at how we got here. >> reporter: what -- when republican bob ehrlich

campaigned for governor, his team agreed to hire julius henson to help them win. >> we made the call. >> henson now admits he wrote the infamous robocall. before polls were even closed. the calls hinted it came from the democrats, saying we are winning, there's no need to go vote am. >> we're okay. relax. >> reporter: the robocall never mentioned that it was really coming from ehrlich's campaign. >> it's not just political dirty tricks, it's against the law. >> reporter: he call its illegal voter suppression. and in paul schurick's case, jurors already agreed. he was sentence for the same robocall that has julius henson arguing in court that it violates his free speech. >> i think it's impossible. >> jury selection at this hour. the trial resumes tomorrow. derek valcourt, wjz eyewitness news. >> the trial is expected to last at least eight days. the baltimore basilica is

about to start closing on weekdays. mike hellgren is live in the newsroom with more on the repairs to the nation's first cathedral. >> those monday-through-friday closures at the basilica are expected to last through may. they planned to fix the cracks. there is no structural damage. but the cracks are expanding. the basilica reopened in 2006, after extensive restoration. scaffolding will now be used so naweddings can take place on the weekends. repairs could cost $3 to $5 million. and earthquake insurance will cover the cost. >> parish officials are aiming to have the work complete by ash wednesday next year. customers bidding for power supplies, means they should see a decrease in their household bill. this comes as customers wait for a $100 credit for the

exelon merger. you should see that in next month's bill. >> you may have the heat on for today. it was gray and chilly most of the day. take a look outside. the sun is trying to come out for the first time this morning. wjz has weather and traffic together. meteorologist bernadette woods has the updated numbers from first warning weather. bern. hello, mary and everybody out there. we're going to start out with first doppler radar to show you, even though the clouds have come in, there's nothing associated with the clouds. it is moving in our direction. you can see all around us, scattered showers, and even thunderstorms. and that will come into with this forecast. 61 degrees is where we sit in baltimore. that's the warmest it's been all day. just out to the south and west, we've seen a few peeks of sunshine. temperatures already jumping up close to 70 degrees. that front will come our way. chance for a few showers and maybe each -- even a thunderstorm or two. but this front is also going to draw much warmer air our way. we'll have that coming up. >> let's check on the roads with kristy breslin at wjz

traffic control. kristy? >> hi, kai. hi, everyone. we have a couple of delays out there. things slow down there from baltimore national pike, over to security boulevard. on the top side inner loop, slowing there as well, as you approach charles street. and the jones falls expressway, we still have a lot of construction going on there. you can expect slow traffic in the northbound direction, out of baltimore city, past 28th street. as far as accidents go, baltimore boulevard, at gambler road. and also, north charles at taplow. let's now take a live look, once you do pass baltimore national pike, things do ease up just a bit. and we'll take another live look. that's another look look at the baltimore national pike. and there's another look there, west of the beltway. things are definitely beginning to build up, although they are moving at the posted speed. this traffic report is brought to you by cirque du soleil. introducing the michael jackson immortal world tour. coming may 5th and 6th.

any time. civil rights suit is filed by four city lawmakers. conduct is so bad, the force needs an outside monitor. mayor michael bloomberg is handling the protest. they also said they violated free speech and other rights used excessive force. in tonight's healthwatch, a new study finds the rate of teens with type 2 diabetes is rising. researchers find the current treatment is not affected. >> sarah was diagnosed with diabetes at 16 years old. a new study in the new england journal of medicine. the study involved nearly 700 overweight and obese teens, recently diagnosed with

diabetes, including sarah, and found a combination of two drugs. matt foreman and avandia, was better in keeping things in check. >> children in diabetes and adolescents, appears to acquire in many children, two drugs, right off the bat. >> reporter: but the drug avandia has been linked to heart disease and stroke. >> doctors aren't sure why heart disease is so hard to control in young patients, but say hormonal changes may play a part. >> about a third of american kids and teens are overweight or obese. putting them at risk for type 2 diabetes and its complications. >> reporter: sarah was managing her diabetes with just medication, until about a month ago. now, she needs insulin injections. >> the insulin helping me regulate this more. >> she's also trying to keep her diabetes under control. in los angeles, bigat shaban, wjz eyewitness news. the study also found that dieting and exercise did not

provide any more benefits to teens taking the drug, metforman, however, the drug alone provided the same results. can wall street get the week off on the right note? >> doesn't look like it. markets are all down today. s&p off 5. nasdaq down 23. let's go to new york right now, where alexis christoforous has tonight's cbs money watch update. shares of barnes and noble surged more than 60% on news of a deal with microsoft. tech giant will invest $300 million for a minority stake in a subsidiary that will include barnes and nobles nook e-reader and college text books. it also helped in 2008. they hope to compete with amazon and give microsoft a foothold in the e-book business. another round of layoffs on wall street could be coming soon. analysts say big banks may lay

off as many as 20,000 workers in new york city later this year. that would be the biggest round of job cuts since 28,000 positions were lost during the financial crisis of 2008. consumer spending flowed last month, as more americans decided to save their money, instead of heading to the stores. the commerce department says personal spending rose 3/tentths of a percent, while incomes rose. savings also rose slightly to 3.8%. and spain has slipped back into a recession for the second time in three years. economists say there are now a dozen european nations thar currently in a recession. the rating agency standard and poors also downgraded the debt of 11 spanish banks, on concerns of spain's shrinking economy. that's your money watch. for more, go to cbsmoneywatch.com. in new york, i'm alexis christoforous. it's the biggest social event of the year for political journalists. nancy cortes reports for wjz. the white house correspondence

well, it started out nice, then got a little not so nice. and now, bern, trying to get nice again. yes? >> trying to. we've got nice weather coming later this week. so just be patient. we'll get to that in a moment. right now, the clouds have come in all ahead of a cold front. and they hung pretty tough over baltimore. however, in western parts of the state, we have seen some sunshine return. and just over the border, in virginia, some sunshine returned. but between the clouds, between the easterly winds, temperatures have taken a big hit. we're only at 61 degrees right

now. but where the sun has come out, it is 71 in cumberland, and 71 also in oakland. so far today, that's been our high. 61 degrees. the average just jumped up to 70 degrees today. we were there yesterday. and for the next couple of days, we're going way above that. but we have to get through today first. this front coming our way will bring some showers and maybe a thunderstorm or two. but that's tonight into tomorrow, before it gets out of here. once it clears out, we'll start to see that warm air coming our way tomorrow. here's that front. it comes through, gets out of here tomorrow afternoon, clouds mixing with some sunshine. and temperatures will start jumping. however, here is another front. this is going to pass by, just off to our northwest on wednesday. what that's going to do is sort of halt our warmup, before it really takes hold thursday and friday. and it's also going to put us not only in a summertime spewing air mass. but a summer-like air mass, where we see showers and storms possible, each of the afternoons, thursday, friday, and maybe even into saturday. forecast comes together like this. here is all of that heat, down

to our south. we've had a few areas in the 90s today. and that's the kind of air moving in our direction. now, probably not 90 degrees. but not too far off it. temperatures jumping. in the 10- to 15-degree range, starting tomorrow. and then we go even higher than that for the second half of the week. out on the water, small craft advisories in effect. winds picking up with the winds coming through. tonight, we only dropped down to about 55 degrees. thunderstorms possible out there. then tomorrow, here's the beginning of our warmup. we're going to see a few showers, maybe even a thunderstorm or two. mainly in the morning. but as we jump into the heat, a thunderstorm or two is possible in the afternoon. 80 degrees tomorrow. next part of the front is going to come through wednesday. it sort of halts the warmup. although we're still talking 77 degrees. but that's nothing compared to what you're going to see the second half of the week. we've got numbers, about 86, 87 degrees in this forecast. >> wow. >> oh, very nice. incredible. >> thank you. that's great. sounds good.

eyewitness news. i'm denise koch. and i'm vic carter. here's what people are talking about. >> controversial safety plan. ahead of the summer olympics in london, measures to put air missiles on top of apartment buildings. monica villamizar has the latest from london. >> reporter: the british military may install surface-to- air missiles on this apartment rooftop, during the summer olympics. they say the missiles are the best ways to protect the skies in london during the games. residents received leaflets, notifying them that testing will begin this week. >> i still am scratching my head, wondering why they decided to use a residential area. >> it does raise questions. whether they can put missiles on private property. >> residents worry that these locations could be could become targets for terrorists. >> generally in this country, the military don't just announce that they're going to occupy private property. it puts us at risk. >> reporter: authorities insist, the missiles are not a

hazard to residents and will only be use as a-- used as a last resort. >> it's all about deterrents and control of the air space. the government has an obligation to the international olympic committee to protect over 100 heads of state who will be staying and all the athletes. >> reporter: if the defense plan goes forward, it would be the first time since world war ii that missiles are deployed in london. >> reporter: in london, monica villamizar, wjz eyewitness news. >> reporter: more than 13,000 troops will be deployed during the summer games. lawyers for the man accused of shooting 17-year-old trayvon martin, are using new tactics to tell his side of the story. kai has more on how george zimmerman is connecting with his attorney. >> zimmerman is turning to social media. the defense has opened a website called gz legal case.com. as well as accounts on facebook and twitter. attorney mark omerra says they are using the sites to

discourage blind speculation and inform the public about certain aspects of the case. meanwhile, zimmerman's attorney is working to keep another aspect private. the defense is asking the judge not to release information about witnesses, amid concerns for their safety. vic? >> kai, thank you. zimmerman admits to shooting the teen as he walked in the florida neighborhood, but says he acted in self-defense. we're learning more about a utah mother who disappeared in 2009. before she vanished, susan powell sent out several e-mails to friends and coworkers, saying she feared her husband could harmer. josh powell was considered a person of interest in her case but never arrested. back in february, powell killed himself and their two young sons in a gas-fueled fire in washington state. three florida siblings involved in a multistate crime spree learn their judgment. today, they sentence 27-year- old dim do herty for his part in a bank robbery and high- speed chase. hours later, his sister lee

doherty, received her sentence. the trio still faces, -- charges in florida, where the alleged crime spree began. with the placement of one beam, the tallest building in new york is once again in lower manhattan. one world trade center surpasses the empire state building. >> the recovery in lower manhattan reached new heights with the placement of this steel beam. the first column of the 100th floor of one world trade center, now stands at 1271 feet high. 21 feet taller than the empire state building. >> it's inspirational. and it's going to make a lot of people happy. >> reporter: it took a while, after september 11th, for construction to get started. but eventually, at a rate of a new floor every week, the tower started to alter manhattan's skyline. locals and tourists marveled at the structure. the milestone comes close to the one-year an an anniversary

in dubai, standing at 23,2300 feet. mary is in the area to explain. >> obesity adds nearly $2 billion to healthcare costs. researchers say many businesses are resign -- redesigning things like bathrooms to better support heavier patrons. lawmakers are taking note. the 2010 healthcare allows them to charge obese patients 10% more if they refuse to participate in wellness programs. >> researchers say obesity- related medical costs, even exceeds smoking-related expense. starting in may, if you have a cell phone, odds are good that you'll get early

sailboat, known as the agean, once docked. >> he keep its in pristine shape. and it has all of the features i would think anyone would want in a boat like that, to do a race like that. >> reporter: but this boat, which was part of a 125-mile race, from newport beach to ensenada, never made it to the finish line. on sunday, they found the boat crashed into pieces south of san diego. three crewmembers did not survive the crash. the fourth was reported missing. >> it's weird. i just looked everything up, you know, as soon as i heard about it. i looked it up on the internet and it's already there. and just to see a picture of that boat -- it's just kind of -- it's chilling. it's just weird. yeah. because i was just talking to him, right before he left. he was excited. >> reporter: darren rick docked his boat a few yards away from the agean. he said he's known the owner, theo, for years, and calls him an experienced sailor. >> not only is he experienced. but they won that race before, you know, for that class. so it's not something he's

dissident in china. a deal between the two countries may be in the works. but the case could strain relations, just days before hillary clinton is scheduled to visit. danielle nottingham reports for wjz, from the white house. >> reporter: at a joint press conference, with japan's prime minister, president obama would not talk about chinese human rights activist, chen guan chong. >> obviously i'm aware of the press reports on the situation in china, but i'm not going to make a statement on the issue. >> reporter: chen is reportedly under u.s. protection in china, after escaping house arrest. it's believed the two countries are trying to negotiate a deal that would give him asylum in america. >> what i would like to emphasize is that every time we meet with china, the issue of human rights comes up. >> reporter: the blind lawyer was in prison for several years, after he exposed forced abortions under the country's one child policy. friends say chen had help escaping house arrest last week, climbing over walls and even crossing a stream.
