surprise change at the top. >> city police commissioner fred bealefeld announces he's stepping down. >> hi, everybody. i'm mary bubala. >> i'm kai jackson. here's what people are talking about. >> we begin tonight with breaking news. baltimore's top cop is retiring a short time ago. fred bealefeld announces he is leading the job. pat warren with more on this still developing story. pat? >> that's right. this is one of the longest- serving police commissioners in recent history. commissioner fred bealefeld is probably also one of the most surprising announcements we've seen in quite a long time. rather than hold a joint news conference as you might expect, the commissioner and the mayor, both decided to issue statements in a single news release. >> in a ribbon statement, mayor rawlings-blake says, while i am

saddened to see his retirement, i respect his decision to retire to spend more time with his family. i know he loved the job and was proud to serve with honest and integrity. >> in his written statement, commissioner bealefeld says this was a very tough decision for me and my family. but it's now the right time for me to bring my career with the baltimore police department to a close. i am very proud of the men and women of the bpd, for all that we have been able to accomplish together over the last five years. and i am looking forward to enjoying retirement with my family and close friends. >> reporter: now, the mayor's statement also includes intentions to begin a nationwide search for a replacement immediately. and she says commissioner bealefeld will be involved in the transition of office. his retirement after 31 years takes effect on august 1st. and one of the things that he'll be noted for as an accomplishment is the big reductions in homicides and in gun crimes.

reporting live from city hall, i'm pat warren. now, back to you. >> all right, pat. thank you. and wjz will stay on the story, bring you new updates, live tonight at 5:00 and 6:00. more breaking news from downtown, minutes ago, verdicts in the trial of two brothers accused of assault while on neighborhood watch. it's a case that divided a community. wjz is live at the mitchell courthouse. weijia jiang explains, one brother was cleared and the other found guilty. >> that's right. we just learned the judge made a split decision in this case. the older brother, 24-year-old eliayahu werdesheim has been found guilty of assault and false imprisonment. not guilty of carrying a deadly weapon. the younger brother, 22-year- old avi werdesheim, has been acquitted of all charges. still, this is a victory for prosecutors whose cases could have been unraveled altogether, when the witness said on the witness stand, i don't want to testify, i want all of the charges to be dropped, end

werdesheim trial, coming up all new at 5:00 and 6:00. yet another developing story wjz is following right now. devastating news for the baltimore ravens. one of the stars in their defense, linebacker, terrell suggs, injures his achilles tendon. more on suggs' future for the 2012 season. >> suggs suffered a lower leg injury, while doing off-season training in arizona. it is the type of setback that could potentially keep him on the sidelines for the entire upcoming season. but suggs remains optimistic. the nfl defensive player of the year, suggs is in the prime of his career, at age 29. considered one of the most passive rushers. one doctor has told suggs he has a partial tear of the achilles tendon. another, though, has diagnosed a complete tear. the difference to be determined when suggs visits a specialist in north carolina next week. and he will have surgery. suggs says he is not writing

all markets are down. dow was down 62. the s&p off 11. nasdaq down 36. let's go to new york, where alexis christoforous has tonight's cbs money watch update. americans didn't spend as much as expected last month. retail chains, including macy's, target and costco, are reporting sales that missed estimates. expert says an early easter and cooler weather in some parts of the country may have kept shoppers out of the store in april. general motors is reporting its sixth straight quarterly profits since february. the company earned a billion dollars last quarter, after stronger demands in canada and the u.s. and the number of people applying for unemployment benefits fell last week by 27,000. that's the most in nearly a year. analysts say the report gives investors some hope. and good news if you're looking to buy a home or refinance. mortgage rates have hit an all- time low. according to freddie mac, the average rate on a 30-year loan

bus. we know at least three people were injured. the driver of the automobile, the driver of the bus. and apparently one student. there were many students on the bus, but apparently only one injured as you can see the emergency door in the rear is open. the students used that to accept the bus. now, the road closed its entirety. this is a little south of marriottsville. baltimore county police on the scene, conducting the investigation. the injured have been taken to local area hospitals. no word on their conditions. >> thank you, mike perry, reporting live. we'll check in with tim williams. the day has just improved. it's really lovely outside. >> we really turned that corner now. it's gone from spring to summer all in like two days. and right now, we're in the 70s. we're en route to daytime highs tomorrow. tomorrow, the record is 90. we'll talk about that here in a second. 75 degrees, our temperature. dew point is pretty high. 61 degrees. so you do feel that humidity level up there. almost feels like a summer-type

tomorrow. we got into the mid-70s today very close to 80 degrees in parts of the area. and as you can see-- you can see, some areas close to 90. tomorrow, the record is 90. we are going to be approaching 90. forecast high is in the mid- to upper 80s. but with this front issue there's a front that is dragging all of this moisture to our north. and it's just kind of draped across the state. with the proximity of that, it's so close. we cannot rule out a chance of widely scattered thundershowers or -- shower or storms. cooler air builds in by the weekend. but with that, it just means we go back into the 80s. and then eventually the mid- to upper 70s. it's going to be pretty comfortable for the foreseeable future. sunset today is at 8:03. there's nothing on the radar right now to speak of. as far as any storms. so tonight, we're going down to 60 degrees. 87 degrees tomorrow. and mary, i would have to say that this is my present to mr. jackson for 19 years today, of

it's 4:30. 36 degrees and sunny. hello. thank for staying with eyewitness news. >> updating the major break news. baltimore's police commissioner is stepping down. mary is in the newsroom with an update on this story wjz first told you about at the top of the newscast. mary? >> reporter: denise, the news comes as a shock as bealefeld is one of the longest-serving commissioners in history. bealefeld informed the mayor of the decision thursday and said he wanted to spend more time with his family. bealefeld has been a member of the baltimore police department for 31 years. and five years as commissioner. bealefeld saw a great reduction in the city's murder rate

during has tenure. last year, baltimore experienced the fewest numbers of homicides since 1977. commissioner bealefeld will be stepping down august 22nd. and the nationwide search for his replacement will begin. >> we'll have more news and reaction to it at 5:00 and 6:00. it appears the former san diego chargers star, junior seau killed himself. the future hall-of-famer died with no explanation. >> reporter: in a 20-year career in the nfl, junior seau made more than 1800 tackles, becoming one of the most feared linebackers in the game. with news of his death, family and friends in shock gatheredda the -- gathered at his home. his mother said -- >> i pray to god, please, take me, leave my child. please. but it is too late. too late. with what appeared to be a self- inflicted grntd wound in the-- gunshot wound in the chest. >> case is being investigate the as a suicide. >> reporter: there was no suicide note. but seau's ex-wife said he tkszed simply --" texted "simply, i love you" to her and the kids. dave doerson shot himself in the chest so his brain would be preserved for science. in a suicide note, doerson asked that it be researched by those looking into brain damage by 1/2. last fall, ray easterling committed suicide. he was suffering dementia at 62. more than 1600 former players are suing for leagues, claiming for years it ignored evidence that repeated blows to the head created chronic encephalopathy. >> they have been detect in

deceased nfl players. two people are arrested and 11 others will face charges in the death of a florida a&m university drum major. kai has the latest this case. >> the state's attorney says they will not name those being charged as they are still at large. but last night, both cameras were rolling. as 24-year-old caleb jackson and 23-year-old ricky wills were booked into jail. both were charged with felony hazing and death. police say the two, along with others, beat robert champion on a bus. the 26-year-old died at the hospital from internal bleeding in shock. julian white has been on paid leave since that incident. >> florida a&m has suspended all band activities, while a task force looks to end hazing. a 14-year-old california boy is accused of shooting and killing his federal agent father. police say the teen called 911 and reported that his father had been shot in the head. but police later arrested him

1996 murder. 23-year-old jody latornu was shot in the back in 1996. the towson university senior managed to drive across the street, where she died. detectives say a white bmw was seen following her before the shooting. metro crimestoppers is increasing the reward for information, in this case, to $30,000. maryland's social services workers are being praised for the governor for saving a has been's life. >> the governor, along with mayor stephanie rawlings-blake who honored the workers who didn't know about their surprise guests. [ applause ] each social worker involved in the attack last week was presented with an award for their heroic actions. they rushed to help the 8-month- old baby who police say was stabbed by her mother, after she slipped a kitchen knife past security during a supervised visit. the mother, kenisha thomas, was released without bail.

confessed mass murderer, anders breivik is back in court. today, a guard and a ferry guard testified that breivik dressed up in a police uniform and tricked them into letting him go to an island youth camp, where he massacred 60 people, including teenagers. he admitted to the killing after killing eight government workers in oslo. he said the attack was necessary because they were embracing immigration. an elephant decides to run amuck. chaos runs as the elephants break loose. finally, after running wild for a half hour. handlers were able to bring the animal under control. about a dozen people suffered minor injuries. a north carolina pastor's sermon is removed from the internet, amid an uproar over

police chased him reaching speeds of 100 miles per hour. 100 grams of cocaine. and 85 grams of marijuana were found in the car. the driver is facing multiple charges. a man declares-- mayor declares a state of emergency after police use a taser on a teen, handcuffed inside a jail cell, in colwin, pennsylvania. >> it was like a shock. like i moved to the side when it happened. >> reporter: shocked with a taser gun. dakwan jackson said it happened to him while inside this holding cell last week. and the 17-year-old said it did not have to happen. he said his hands were cuffed and his ankles shackled. and according to jackson, the officer who pulled the trigger, is this man we caught leaving the police station. while hehe declined to -- he declined to comment. he said as a result of this incident, three officers, including the one involved in the tasering incident, have now been taken off their schedules, pending the outcome of their
