evidence. two women were shot and one of them died. >> we had a custodian call 9-1- 1. he was in the building cleaning when he called immediately. >> reporter: police say the surviving victim was taken to shock trauma in very serious condition. a short time later, they found the man dead near the church. he was suffering an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound. detectives were trying to determine whether he was the shooter. >> thoughts and prayers go out to the family. >> reporter: they're anxious to

case that has been closely watched. guilty of false imprisonment and assault in the beating of teen cory ausby. cleared of all charges. >> he's disappointed and i'm disappointed in the verdict. >> reporter: they responded to a suspicious person by sean rehm in 2010. the judge ruled elly, whose former israeli special forces hit him in the head with the radio. the judge rejected claims elly acted in self-defense. in a stunning twist, ausby refused to testify but the attorney said they're happy with the ruling. >> this case was never about money. it was about justice and we got it today. >> reporter: in the park

wjz.com and clicking on news. a surprise announcement from baltimore city's top cop. he is leaving the force. mike hellgren tells us why commissioner is stepping down. >> reporter: commissioner retired in august, he said, to spend more time with loved ones, revealing in a statement that "it was a tough decision for my family and i, but it's time to bring my time with the police department and i to a close." he spent the past few years at the top. sheila dixon put him there. >> he's special. he'll be missed. when i chose the commissioner, i knew he was the right person for the job. >> reporter: it's a surprise job. he told wjz a few months ago that he had no plans to leave. >> this is who i am. this is what i do. i still love doing it. >> reporter: issue her own statement, saying he will be a

their backyard. the ground caved in. swallowed four trees and a hammock. crews are looking to stop the hole from expanding. a woman in new mexico uses her one year old child to flee from a shoplifting arrest. the woman swung a car seat at them with her baby still inside. she then drove away while her accomplice was taken into custody. now charged with three felony counts with shoplifting and child abuse. traffic stop turning into much more for police in ohio. this video shows the police pursuit. at one point, the suspect breaks through a toll booth and able to go off the road into a ditch. police say the driver fled

because there was cocaine and marijuana in the car. when an older student gets into a crash with a johns hopkins student, they look at the testing of older drivers. >> reporter: no one knew this ride home from the farmer's market would be the last for nathan. now his parents only have pictures to remember their gifted middle child. >> it's just heartbreaking. we really thought nathan would figure out a solution to some problem. >> reporter: riding down the university parkway last february, an 83 year old driver turns into nathan's path a as she turns into her driveway, tumbles over the car and underneath. stunned, she sits down.

>> minutes and minutes are going by and each passing minute. >> reporter: after months to wait for nathan to come out of the coma, his parents made the hardest of choices, taking him off of life-support. >> this is an example of older people being in denial about their abilities. >> reporter: mitchell believes some older drivers shouldn't be behind the wheel. they want to take competency tests. currently, 27 states and the district of columbia require additional testing. >> you're not saying get these people off the road all together. >> we just want to get the risky drivers off the road. >> reporter: he spent time testing for the government, but realized forcing a competency on an older driver is a bad idea. >> it's not fair. we had really refined tools to find quote the bad apples, but

we don't have those. >> reporter: drivers 65 and older have fatal accidents, but they drive less. when you consider it, it increases sharply and by the time they're 80, it's four times higher than for younger drivers. >> i believe there's many drivers on the road today that don't have what it takes to drive safely. >> reporter: there's no denying, we go through physical changes as we age. >> changes in vision. hearing to be diminished, which can affect our ability to hear sirens, may have problems with reflex time. >> reporter: a simulator at the national academy of sciences shows the difference between the typical driver's vision and an older driver. >> everything in the front isn't as vivid. >> reporter: nathan's parents say reevaluating the older drivers can save lives. >> do you think we can do this

far away from belle air and had some this morning as well at 62 degrees. now there's another front to the north. this will actually change the weather for the weekend, but tomorrow night, the son will come down across the region, picking up showers and thunderstorms. tomorrow night, or late in the afternoon, it's going to be get warm tomorrow. we expect the warm air sitting in the south. we expect temperatures to be at least maybe in the upper 80s and with that front coming down from the north and northwest, behind us, cooler and drier. showers and storms. lingers a little bit on saturday and then pleasant later saturday, sunday into early next week. a nice one. five knots. around 60 degrees. showers and thundershowers. 60 by morning. so a warm night.
