new president, socialist francois hollande. hollande narrowly defeated nicolas sarkozy. this morning overseas markets plummeted on the news. susan mcginnis is in washington with more. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, danielle. francois hollande is france's first socialist president in 17 years. voters there angry over how the economy's been handled sent a clear message they are tired of the handling of the economy, spending cuts and austerity measures. thousands of cheering hollande supporters celebrated into the morning hours. hollande, a champion of government stimulus programs, campaigned on a platform of undoing cost cutting measures instituted by the sarkozy government and the rest of europe.

in his victory speech, hollande said austerity can no longer be inevitable. his election could reshape the european debt crisis. sarkozy and german chancellor angela merkel had led europe on a cost-cutting europe. hollande wants government sponsored stimulus to revive the growth and wants the very rich to pay a 75% income tax rate. sarkozy, an american-friendly leader, was criticized for his high profile lifestyle. he told his supporters he bears full responsibility for the election loss. hollande was a little known competition who became his party's candidate because the leading candidate, dominick strauss-khan, became embroiled in a sex scandal in new york last year. more to come. france holds parliamentary elections next month and the socialists already hold the upper house.

president obama has already called hollande, congratulated him and invited him to the u.s. ahead of an economic summit at camp david next month. >> susan mcginnis in washington, thank you. french voters weren't the only europeans who shook things up in weekend elections. greek's angry with their government's severe austerity measures rebelled against both of the country's dominant political parties. this morning greece faces political stalemate which could threaten its hard won economic bailout. an american aide worker kidnapped in pakistan has turned up in an apparent al qaeda video pleading for president obama to save his life. warren weinsteen of rockville, maryland, was abducted last summer. in a new video posted on jihadist websites, the 70-year-old said he's okay and addressed the president directly. >> my life is in your hands, mr. president. if you accept the demands, i live.

if you don't accept the demands, then i die. >> among the demands for weinstein's release is end of u.s. air strikes against al qaeda and taliban militants. but even as that video was released yesterday, a u.s. air strike in yemen killed a top al qaeda fugitive. yemen's military says fahd al quso was hit by a missile fired from a drone aircraft. he was wanted in his role in the bombing of the "uss cole," which killed 17 american sailors 12 years ago. now to the 9/11 terror trial at guantanamo bay, cuba. saturday's arraignment of the five al qaeda suspects was just the first step in what's likely to be a drawn out legal process taking years. as drew levinson reports, the defendant's behavior could slow things down even more. >> reporter: lawyers for the prisoners charged with the september 11th attacks say their clients were not trying to disrupt the court by reading

magazines, praying and not answering the judge's questions. >> the accused refused to acknowledge the legitimacy of the military commission as demonstrated their through silence. >> reporter: the five men, including khalid shaikh mohammed who claims to have planned the hijackings were arraigned in military court saturday in guantanamo bay. eddy bracken was one of the few victims' relatives there. he lost his sister lucy when the towers in new york came down. >> how they perceive themselves and how the lawyers are perceiving them, yeah, hurtful. hurtful because they have no remorse. they have no -- i don't think they even have any souls, i'll tell you the truth. >> reporter: the arraignment comes 10 1/2 years after the planes destroyed the world trade center. many of the families of the nearly 3,000 people who died here at ground zero as well as in washington and pennsylvania say, justice has taken too long. the chief prosecutor says he's doing this by the book. >> justice in every society is

patient, methodical, patient, determined, but patient. >> reporter: leon and eunice hanson lost their son, daughter-in-law and granddaughter. their anger remains driblirecte the defendants, not the system. >> i think people like khalid shaikh mohammed, if they came back and told him, we killed 50 children today. he'd say wonderful, praise allah. i say damn you. >> reporter: the defendants will be back in court this summer. forensic experts are trying to identify two bodies found this weekend in mississippi who may be members of a missing tennessee family. jo ann bain and her three daughters aged 8, 12, and 15 have been missing since late last month. police and the fbi suspect they were kidnapped by 35-year-old adam mayechltd mayes from

northeastern mississippi where the two unidentified bodies were discovered. local residents are disturbed. >> a community like this, on account of this, pretty quiet community. nothing serious has ever happened around here. so, it's a pretty rough situation. >> the fbi says mayes may be headed to arizona. an autopsy is planned today on a man killed at churchill downs, just hours after the kentucky derby. he's been identified as a 48-year-old groomer who lived at the track. police say it appears he got into a fight before he died. they also say his death appears to have no connection to churchill downs or the derby. now to campaign 2012. republican voters in north carolina, west virginia and indiana go to the polls tomorrow to choose between presumptive nominee mitt romney and ron paul, but romney and obama are well into the main re-election campaign. >> reporter: mitt romney marked

six months to election day with a visit to boston for the celtics playoff game to support his hometown team. the campaign is picking up teammates as republican party makes the push to support the likely nominee. sunday newt gingrich says he'll do everything he can to get his former rival elected. >> so, you have endorsed him? you are -- >> of course eye endorsed him. and we're working with his campaign team. >> reporter: the former speaker of the house dropped out of the presidential race last week and says he'll campaign with romney, but gingrich told cbs's bob schieffer, he won't be his running mate. >> would you be interested? >> bob, you've known me a long time. would you pick me to be vice presidential nominee? i mean, i'm so much my own agent, it would be -- it's inconceivable. >> reporter: the former massachusetts governor still needs more than 200 delegates to clinch the republican nomination. the president officially launched his re-election campaign this weekend in ohio. >> if people ask you what this campaign is about, you tell them it's still about helping. you tell them it's still about change.

the nasdaq fell almost 68. good news at the gas pump. the average cost of semifinal-serve regular nationwide stands at $3.85 according to the lundberg survey, down seven cents in the past two weeks. mortgage rates are hitting a six-year low. sluggish economic growth sent 30-year fixed rate loans down to an average of 3.84%. according to freddie mac, that's usuall good news for housing demand, but the slowing economic growth is not good for consumer confidence, which means less home buying. how about a virtual doctor's visit? instead of the usual visit to a doctor, "usa today" reports on an internet site run by now clinic online that provides web and telephone-based medical services. the service is available now in 22 states. proponents say it gives patients access to inexpensive round-the-clock primary care but physician groups are critical. and it's not news that lying
