frantic search. missing sisters believed to be in grave danger. >> as police identify the bodies of their mother and another sister. >> hi, everybody. i'm mary bubala. >> i'm kai jackson. here's what people are talking about. >> a mother and her three daughters, missing for over three weeks. today, they arrest the suspect's mother and sister. teresa garcia reports for wjz. this comes as police identify two bodies in the case. >> reporter: police say the wife and mother of 35-year-old adam mays also played a role in the kidnapping of a tennessee mother and her three daughters. may's wife was charged with kidnapping tuesday. she told police she drove joanne bane and her three daughters from their home in tennessee to mississippi. the suspect's mother is charged with conspiracy to commit kidnapping. the bodies of joanne and 14- year-old adrian were found last

week behind the suspect's home in union county, mississippi. now, there's a massive, around- the-clock search of the woods and back roads of that home. the fbi is optimistic that the two younger sisters, 12-year- old alexandria, and 8-year-old kileah, are alive and with the fugitive. mays was a family friend who stayed over at the baines' home and stayed to help the family pack and move to arizona. gary baines said he woke up to find his wife, daughter and mays gone. investigators believe mays has dyed his hair to change his appearance and may have changed the look of the girls to hide them. >> there is a reward for information that leads to the two girls and girls girls and mays' arrest. denise is in the newsroom with the accident that closed mountain road for hours. >> reporter: the accident

happened around 10:00 this morning, on a dangerous stretch of mount road at wrecker road. three vehicles were involved in the accident. a harford county school maintenance truck crossed the center line and hit a black gmc terrain, head on. both drivers were killed. a red jeep rear-ended the suv. a passenger in the county vehicle and the driver are both at shock trauma. a portion was closed for investigation and cleanup. but the road is now open. mary -- or kai? >> thank you, denise. wjz has a crew in fallston. we'll have the latest at 5:00 and 6:00. for the second time in two days, wjz learns that a dangerous weapon is confiscated from a apparently at bwi marshall airport. an ohio woman was caught carrying a stun gun inside her carry-on bag. it was about the size of a smart phone and taken by police. yesterday, wjz showed you a 9-

millimeter handgun. the florida man told agents he forgot he had the gun in his bag. well, the fbi is taking apart a bomb al qaeda had hoped to use to blow up a plane. randall pinkston reports for wjz, with new details on the device and plot. >> reporter: u.s. countterrorism officials say the foiled bomb plot never posed a danger to the american people. the would-be bomber never made it to the airplane. they say aqap was behind the investigation. >> the aqap has clearly been determined to pursue these attempted attacks. and we are going to do everything in our power to stop them, long before they get to an aircraft. >> reporter: officials say the device had all of the hallmarks of ibrahim alasiry, the mastermind behind the bomb that

failed in detroit in 2009, as well as the 2010 attempt to hide explosives in toner cartridges, shipped in cargo planes. >> the white house says president obama is pleased with the work of counterterrorism to foil this plot. >> reporter: on capitol hill, lawmakers got closed-door briefings on the operation. >> the best defense against terrorism, is clearly intelligence. and it works. >> reporter: officials describe this new device as an upgraded underwear bomb that did not contain any metallic parts. they are trying to determine if it could have slipped through airport security, but also expressed confidence in current screening measures. randall pinkston, wjz eyewitness news. >> white house officials say there is no evidence that this plot was to coincide with the one-year anniversary of the killing of osama bin laden. beginning to heal. today, family and friends of a murdered ellicott city pastor gathered to remember her life.

adam may has more on the funeral of reverend mary marguerite koh. >> the services are under way now at the incarnation. reverend koe was reverend at the st. peters episcopal church. she and the ministers were fatally shot last thursday. police say the shooter, 56-year- old douglas jones was a homeless man. he had been banned from the church food bank because of aggressive behavior. police say that man took his own life in the woods behind the church. brenda brewington's funeral is celt for this thursday in ellicott city. >> adam, thank you. hear from today's mourners, coming up new at 5:00 and 6:00. the defense calls its final witnesses in the robocall of julius henson. he is the political consultant accused in the last gube neritorial election. derek valcourt filed this from the courthouse. >> reporter: henson's cross-

examination, at times, contentious, as prosecutors said that henson intended that call to trick voters into staying at home on election night. >> the call was to get people to go vote. >> reporter: julius henson told jurors, the robocall was meant to be a form of reverse psychology. he felt by telling voters that democrat martin o'malley was already winning, those voters might rush out and support bob ehrlich. he was instructed by ehrlich's campaign manager, not to include the legally-required authority line. identifying it was paid for by the ehrlich campaign. >> when i read this, he said he liked the call. and i said, well, you need a tag for this call. he said "i don't want a tag." >> reporter: but prosecutors say all of the facts together point to an illegal conspiracy, between schurick and henson on election night to suppress

best-selling children's books of all times. he was -- it was recently made into a movie. he was just 83 years old. firefighters in arkansas find themselves in a sticky situation when a little boy gets his arm stuck in a gumball machine. this 2-year-old wanted some gum. and when it didn't come out, he reached into the machine to get it. instead of the gumball dropping, the boy's arm got stuck. the rescue turned out to be successful. but complicated. >> yeah. that's a gumball. we have to do a lot to get that one. >> but no injuries, so. it turned out pretty good. >> rescue crews had to break the glass, spilling gumballs all over the place. and the little boy ended up walking away with extra gum. a colorado state college student, jumping from the roof of an apartment complex. the student was trying to land in a pool, but he hilt concrete. -- hit concrete. >> oh, my god.

felt like it was going to rain all day. and finally, it has. here's the proof. >> guess. >> rain drops on the camera. >> windshield wiper. >> well, we have had some rain making its way across the state. but this batch of rain is breaking up as it moves off to the east. amounts are light out there. but we are getting rain. first warning doppler radar. here's how it looks. also notice on the top of your screen, there is a scale.

on the lighter side of things, those are the colors we're seeing. this is light rain. earlier today, we did see yellies and oranges to the west. at this point, we're thinking a couple of showers. then overnight, there is the chance for a few more rounds of showers. maybe even a thunderstorm. then there's another part of the storm tomorrow. we'll get to that in a moment. but first, here's what we have been dealing with. clouds come in. fog taking over. and here come the showers across the state. everything light at this point. but with a southeasterly wind, after days of an easterly wind, and any rain falling, we do have coastal flood advisories in effect through the next couple of high tides here just along the bay. and also, just along the potomac. temperature-wise, winds have warmed up. we were in the 70s here in baltimore. we dropped to 68 degrees. but you see, our high was 72. and that is our average. and morning low was 59 degrees. mild start to the day. that's going to be the case again tonight. we're going to be locked in

this pattern for at least the next 24 to 36 hours. here's the first part of this storm that we were just going through. but the second part is right down in here. we get rid of this first part tomorrow. but just in time for the second part to follow. so you're not going to really notice a difference. but what is really happening on the scientific side of things is that a new low is going to come up from the south. keeping the chance up for showers. and maybe even increasing the chance for thunderstorms, before all of this leaves us on thursday. and as that's happening, it's going to continue to bring the mild flow of air our way. we'll see scattered showers, thunderstorms on the way tomorrow. maybe even into early thursday morning. but all of this will clear out of here on thursday afternoon. so the forecast is like this on the waters. small craft advisories are still in effect with those winds up. then tonight, dropping down, a little bit here. pretty much to the low 60s. by tomorrow, though, again the chance for scattered showers and storms. we're going to 76 for our high. then all of this gets out of here for the second half of the week. we'll have that five-day a little later. >> all right.

falling around the area. hello, everyone. thanks for staying with eyewitness news. i'm vic carter. >> and i'm denise koch. >> killed on the way home from prom. the lives of two beloved maryland teens ends in a split second. mary has more on how they're being remembered. >> reporter: a small western maryland community, still reeling over the deaths of cauliflower and samantha kelly. >> reporter: shattered car parts litter the ground. and friends keep adding to the memorial. volleyballs for sam. >> it's pretty hard. >> reporter: the couple had left the prom in shepherd's town. sam apparently wanted to change. the car left the road, skid along the embankment, then slammed into a tree. >> i heard that they had a bet with another group or couple that would get to the house faster than them. i'm not sure if that's true. but i think people are going to take driving a little more seriously now. >> reporter: police say cauliflower was speeding in his honda sports car. but they have yet to release

how fast they were going. >> reporter: brenda -- they are a great pair. they will be missed. >> reporter: kelly was a star in volleyball and tennis. both were seniors on the honor roll. >> brendan was one of the nicest people i knew. he was the pitcher. i was the catcher. >> reporter: at williamsport high school, students say there is just silence and tears. monday after the crash, one teacher broke down and started crying in front of her class, as students grieved. >> today, we should be looking back at prom, talking about the parties and pictures, not having to remember two people that just passed away. >> reporter: a school district spokesperson says he is still waiting on news of funeral arrangements for the teen. vic? >> the investigation into the crash is ongoing. learning from its mistakes. the company at the center of the costa concordia disaster unveils new safety measures. and kai is in the newsroom with more on the changes.

>> reporter: costa cruises now has several new safety measures in place on the ship. those include a realtime route monitoring system. electronic tracking. and changes that will allow more crewmembers to issue orders. the initiatives come in the wake of the costa concordia disaster in january. at least 30 people were killed on the rocks. under the new rules, guests will receive a new electronic card to be scanned during drilling. if they miss the training, they will be tac tracked to another. >> the costa concordia pilot remains under house arrest. pictures being used to promote the place she was last seen. this is a photo looking for madeleine mccann. madeleine disappeared five years ago. her family is said to be horrified by this development. the father of josh powell, the main suspect in the

disappearance and murder of his wife susan, is on trial. susan's parents are still hoping for answers. >> reporter: last february, during a supervised visit with their father, 7-year-old brady and 5-year-old-- charlie and braden were killed. police say josh powell locked a social worker out of his home and attacked his two sons with a hatchet before starting a gas- fueled blaze that consumed the house within minutes, before killing everyone inside. >> he blew up the house and the kids! >> i already felt numb. but it just took my breath away. >> the fact that he killed those boys and the way he killed them, what kind of a monster -- it pointed out what kind of a person he really was. >> reporter: now, josh powell's father, steven powell, is on trial, charged with 14 counts of voyeurism. during a search of the washington state home, the elder powell shared with his son, police found secretly

recorded images of young women, including josh's wife, susan cox-powell, who has been missing since 2009. with the wounds of their grandson's death still fresh, the coxes' hope that steven powell will finally provide them with answers they have been looking for. >> he needs to tell the truth and tell us what happened to her daughter. >> reporter: from the beginning, josh powell maintained susan disappeared from their utah home, while he and his sons were on a midnight camping trip in the utah desert. chuck and judy cox say their former son-in-law was very close with their father. and they're convinced that steven powell knows what happened to their daughter. >> opening statements in steven powell's trial are expected tomorrow. the battle over student loan interest rates rages on in washington. senate republicans derail a democratic bill, keeping those rates from doubling, july 1st. republicans say they want to prevent the increase. but they are against how democrats would pay for it. if an agreement is not reached,

interest rates on federal student loans will rise to 6.8% from the current 3.4%. well, north carolina voters head to the polls today. on the ballot, a controversial referendum, banning same-sex marriage in the state. amendment 1 would change north carolina's constitution to say, marriage between one man and one woman is the only domestic legal union that shall be valid or recognized in this state. the bill, proposing the amendment, says only a simple majority is needed for the amendment to pass. making his way to maryland. the president is planning to come to our state. and it might be the only stop he makes here. the president is set to be in maryland june 12th. he is expected to attend a lunch and fundraising dinner in baltimore. it will most likely be a short visit for president obama. since maryland is one of the most reliably democratic states. meanwhile, rick santorum tells supporters, in an e-mail, he is endorsing mitt romney.

university student charged with driving a u-hall truck, charged with driving into a crowd of students. he did not enter a plea in the tailgating crash that left one woman dead. ross's attorney claims the truck malfunctioned. ross is due in court again in june. >> well, the main suspect in the disappearance of the natalee holloway may eventually stand trial in the u.s., on fraud and extortion charges. in 2010, joran van der sloot received $25,000. however, authorities say the information he gave was false. the 24-year-old was currently in prison in peru for murdering a student.

van der sloot is appealing that sentence, only after the appeal is decided will possible extradition to the u.s. be considered. an indiana couple is under arrest after taking the young children on a dangerous joy ride. kai is live in the newsroom with more on the charges the two are facing. >> the couple are accused of strapping their children onto the hood of the car with a tow strap. police say a witness saw this and called police. they reportedly drove several blocks before being pulled over. the driver, aaron stefanski was charged with dwi. the children, ages 4, 5, 6, and 7, were not hurt. vic? >> hard to believe. thank you very much. the children are now in the care of child protective services. a 5-year-old girl nearly drowns after a visit to a fast food restaurant in tennessee. while walking outside near the picnic table, she fell into an underground grease pit at this sonic. her father says she stepped on

a green manhole cover and disappeared. >> i thought she was gone. because i couldn't see her initially. >> i just was like, the only way i'm going to get her is if she raises her hand. >> reporter: sonic apologized for the mishap and says they are taking action to make sure an accident like this doesn't happen again. but her parents are still considering legal action. a new jersey work ser rushed -- worker is rushed to the hospital. the man was repairing the roof of a manufacturing plant when it gave way. he fell 40 feet into a tank of nitric acid. thankfully, his coworker was able to pull him out. however, he still suffered injuries from head to toe. it's been a week since anyone has seen 21-year-old fox executive gavin smith. now, his family is asking for the public's help. rachel kim has the story. >> reporter: tonight, 57-year- old gavin smith's whereabouts is a mystery. the fox executive was last seen

so i do think there may be minor delays from time to time. 68 degrees now. hasn't gone much over that. humidity, way up. 90%. southeast winds, 7. the barometer holding steady. 29.85 inches. pretty much the same temperatures everywhere. upper 60s to low 70s. a little sunshine this afternoon. gusts a little warmer. 73, pax river. and d.c. as well. 63 in oakland. locally, mid- to upper 60s to near 70 down by the bay. annapolis and kent island at 69. 72/59 today. the average high now is 72 degrees. the average low, however, is still 49. the records, 93. in 1997. look at that. 33 degrees on this morning. had some frost in suburbs that day. 1997. a little southerly or southeasterly wind. generally, it's been out of the south. that's what kept us a little warmer today. and brought that moisture in. this system has gone in right now. it's going to slow down
