november. >> it had to do with who he is, what he stands for, what he believes, what he thinks is right for america. our families, our values and our future. the same-sex marriage is incidental. >> reporter: mitt romney is on the defense about a washington post article, suggesting that he bullied a gay classmate in high school. >> in a radio interview, romney apologized for what he called hijinx and pranks. he stated he had no idea the student was gay. conservatives say this issue could fire up the republican base. >> i think it will energize all of those evangelical christians who have misgivings about voting for a mormon. >> reporter: and some democrats, including catholics, who helped president obama get elected, say it could change their vote. at the white house, randall pinkston, wjz eyewitness news. >> well, much has been made of

the timing of the president's declaration. a democratic source tells cbs news, the plan had been for the president to announce his support for same-sex marriage on "the view" next week. >> a threat to society. today, a maryland judge sentences a man who is shot and killed an off-duty maryland state trooper. denise is in the newsroom with a killer who maintains his innocence. >> 20-year-old sirel cornelius williams, is going to spend the rest of his life in jail. today, he made no apology to the family of trooper wesley brown. williams shot brown outside an appleby's in 2010. the judge called the murder a vengeful act. and sentenced him to life without parole, plus 20 years. trooper brown was working security part-time at the restaurant when he was thrown out for being disruptive. >> trooper brown's family said today is a great day for her family. and that she's happy justice has been served. >> there is a new name on the fbi's 10 most wanted list.

adam mayes is accused of murdering a mother and daughter two years ago and kidnapping two daughters. mark strausman reports. an intense multistate manhunt is under way. >> we believe adam mayes could be anywhere in the united states and we are extremely concerned for the safety of the girls. >> reporter: the fbi will continue its intensive search for adam mayes, one of the most wanted in america. he is expected of killing joanne baines and her 14-year- old daughter adrian in their home last month. and kidnapping 12-year-old alexandria,a and 8-year-old kayleah. mayes mother says he believed he was their father. >> my daughter said he lives, sleeps, eats and breathes, nothing but these two children. >> reporter: charges against mayes and his wife teresa, were upgraded to murder wednesday. teresa is seen here with the bane children, claims she saw the children killed in cold

blood. both were directly part of the kidnapping of alexandria, and that she drove the youngest of the bane girls to mississippi. that's where mayes was seen last, caught on surveillance camera at a video store. >> investigators once again saw this wednesday. but say he could be hiding anywhere. >> i must emphasize that mayes also has ties to texas, north carolina, south carolina, florida, and arizona. >> reporter: the reward for any information leading to mayes or the girls, has grown to 175,000 dollars. >> to adam mayes, i would urge you, if you're listening, to number 1, turn those girls in to a safe location. and then peacefully and safely turn yourself in to law enforcement. >> reporter: and mayes may be using the alias of christopher zachary wild, or paco rodriguez, his facebook profile

name, according to the fbi. >> reporter: a church secretary murdered in ellicott city is laid to rest today. brenda brewington was found shot to death inside the office of st. peter's episcopal church last week. reverend dr. mary marguerite cohen was also killed. the funeral services were held today. cohen's fume was earlier this week. the church is offering to bury the gunman who took his own life. his family has not yet made a decision on that offer. 30-year-old minag uni is charged with possession of the drug and equipment to produce it. the elaborate growing operation included high-intensity lights, a dehumidifier, air filters and an irrigation system. wjz has uncovered part of the past from 2003 to 2006. he worked as a technician for the baltimore city police crime lab. court records show he worked more than 100 cases, including

some homicides. more than 300 plants could have yielded up to 171 pounds of marijuana. uni is out on $25,000 bail. wjz will have details about the suspect coming up live at 5:00 and 6:00. deliberations continue now in the julius henson robocall trial. derek valcourt is at the mitchell courthouse, where the political consultant waits to learn his fate. >> reporter: in all, the jury has been deliberating for eight hours now, as they try to determine whether those controversial robocalls amounted to election fraud. >> reporter: julius henson remains confident they jury will acquit him for the robocalls he wrote for bob ehrlich. >> vindication is a great thing. and i would just say that i'm fortified by tens of thousands of people praying all over this country. >> reporter: but state prosecutor emit daffit built his case, trying to convince

jurors that henson and paul schurick conspired together in order to convince african americans to stay home from voting election night. >> relax. everything is fine. the only thing left is to watch it on tv tonight. >> reporter: henson maintains the calls were a legitimate reverse-psychology tactic, meant to inspire votes for ehrlich. and they claim he was just doing what they wanted when he left off the legally-required tag saying paid for by the ehrlich campaign. >> reporter: two charges because the robocall did not contain the line that says "paid for by the ehrlich campaign." and two charges of attempting to influence a voter's decision to go to the polls through fraud. at the courthouse, derek valcourt, wjz eyewitness news. >> henson faces thousands in fines and up to 12 years in prison.

wjz is monitoring deliberations. we'll bring you the verdict as soon as it is reached. mdt owner michael andretti is now going to monitor the baltimore grand prix. this is the third company in six months charged with taking over the race. the deal still needs approval by the city's board of estimates, which is set to vote on a contract may 16th. the baltimore grand prix is set to run labor day weekend. southern maryland is getting more help to recover from hurricane irene. the federal emergency management agency is awarding more than $4 million to the southern maryland electrical coop, in three maryland countery -- counties. they will help recover funds following last year's damaging hurricane, charles, calvert, and st. mary's county will share the money. the rain and the clouds will move out. the sun has moved back in. outside, it is beautiful, breezy. just a really nice may afternoon. wjz has weather ask traffic together.

tim williams has the updated numbers from first warning weather. we'll start with tim. >> good afternoon, mary. good afternoon, everyone. a definite improvement. we've had rain totals move on through. and we'll have some of those next hour. first warning doppler radar, shows what is going on now. and of course, wjz drought watch continues to track the rainfall totals. and we'll talk about them coming up here in a little while. but right now, we're watching low pressure moving off the coast of new england. rotation is bringing just light showers across the mid- atlantic. we're getting just a few really widely scattered ones, down around us. and really nothing that is going to impact us too much. but as you take a closer look, we've seen some moving across cumberland. and just over the mason-dixon line. you'll see mainly widely scattered showers throughout this afternoon. much of that is drying up as it moves into the region. temperature is around 68 degrees. normal high is 72 for this date. most of us are in the 60s, except for in oakland, which is 46 degrees. that's largely because of the winds, from the west/northwest. look at these winds. these are sustained winds over

the last hours. 31 mail per hour winds, over toward hagerstown. and the gusts have been substantially higher. hagerstown, reporting 36-mile- per-hour gusts. 26 at bwi marshall. so the winds have really been a factor. all the reason that much of this rain coming down is just going to be evaporating as soon as it hits the ground. we'll have more on the rain totals coming up in a little while. but for now, kai, back over to you. >> thank you. let's check on the roads with kristy breslin. >> reporter: well, a bit of a chaotic start on the beltway. traveling on the west side inner loop, we have a 30-minute delay. that's from the bw parkway to security boulevard. as far as the top side inner loop, stop and go there, from stevenson road to the jones falls expressway. and the west side outer loop, still brake lights there, from 795 to baltimore national pike. average speed at this point, about 35 miles an hour. northbound 95, a couple of slow spots there. delays stretch from 32 to the beltway on the southwest side.

sunny and breezy in central maryland right now. the complete first warning forecast is coming up. a quick-thinking deputy stops a man from jumping to his death off a bridge in oregon. dash cam video catches the deputy, pulling up to the man's car, but he doesn't want to talk. he quickly jumps out and heads to the guardrail. the deputy restrains him and pulls him away from the edge, rescuing him from a 140-foot drop. the man underwent a mental evaluation, and afterward, did thank the deputy for saving his life. in australia, a han is accused of intentionally running over his own sister. police say the 20-year-old man struck his 19-year-old sister with his car after her cat urinated on the computer. she suffered a fractured spine and leg, as well as a collapsed lung. her brother is charged with assault and negligent driving. the cat wasn't hurt. three pipe bombs are found inside a home. many had to be evacuated from the area. natasha brown has the story

from just outside of philadelphia. >> my main concern was just to get everybody out safely. >> reporter: there was little time to think, when residents in this normally quiet, warring ton community, were given an order to evacuate. >> they didn't really tell us what was wrong, just that things had been found. and it was better to just leave. they were doing it for our protection. >> reporter: atf, the philadelphia bomb squad and warring ton police, confirmed on a-- converged on a home, responding to a 911 call. investigators say the female homeowner, thought to be in her 70s, had been away and returned home to find an explosive device in the kitchen. >> in this tack ways, -- particular case, maybe something similar to a pipe bomb. >> there were two additional suspected devices. but the one called in was initially on the kitchen. >> reporter: the pipe bombs were diffused on the house. and removed with bags of evidence. a man in his 50s, who according to investigators, shared the home with his mother, is being sought after for questioning.

>> we have a person of interest that we are attempting to locate so we can speak to them. >> reporter: relieved neighbors poured back into their homes after a tense two hours. many still holding onto a sense of fear. >> one sense, you feel kind of relieved because they found it before anybody got hurt. but in another sense, it's scary. because, i mean, i live 100 feet from the house. so that's kind of nerve- racking. >> reporter: >> the man wanted in connection with the pipe bombs is now in police custody. he faces several charges, including catastrophe and weapons of mass destruction. a little good news on wall street. [ stock bells ringing ] >> the market losing streak is over. but the gains aren't great. the dow is up 20. s&p up 3. nasdaq down 1. let's go to new york, where alexis christoforous has tonight's cbs money watch update. >> the dow snapped a six-day

losing streak, as investors went hunting for bargains. stocks rose, despite ongoing uncertainty in europe and a weaker-than-expected trade report from china. cisco systems plunged nearly 10% and dragged down tech stocks. they warned that technology appears to be slowing down. the chairman of the federal reserve says banks are starting to lend more money. but there is still plenty of room for improvement. ben bernanke said that more consumers and businesses are finding it easier to borrow. but many credit-worthy people are still finding it difficult to get a mortgage. and more may be applying for a mortgage, now that the rate has hit a record low. according to freddie mac, the rate is at an all-time low of 3.83%. avon has until monday to respond to a takeover offer from beauty products maker cody. avon rejected the initial buyout.

totals. some folks have seen just inches and inches of rain. it's all in the location. bwi thurgood marshall is the official reporting station for the state. got .36 inches of rain. and because it didn't happen there, well, really it didn't happen. so so you may be getting a lot of rain at your house. but until it's officially reported at the station, it's not going to count for our total. winds from the west/northwest. temperatures ranging for 46. closer to that cool, northwest wind around oakland. 70 around patuxent. and mid-60s around most of the state. and 66 in rock hall. 68 in columbia. around the states, winds have been moving through the day. pressure gradient between those two systems that is creating all of this wind. look at this. 31-mile-per-hour winds. sustained winds in hagerstown.

gusts up to 30 miles an hour. and 35 around hagerstown. the high pressure is going to eventually take over. and low will move out completely. when the high dominates the forecast and is the only game in town, so to speak, it is going to be very dry, very sunny. and that starts tomorrow. temperatures are going to be very pleasant. very mild. as the high sinks to the south. it's going to allow for that warmer air to move in from the southwest. and that's going to make for a very nice mother's day weekend. we'll talk about that here in a little while. small craft advisory through 8:00. average low, now, 50. we'll be a little below that. but seasonal cool. and we should mention that the rain washed out the orioles game yesterday. they have a double-header today. the first game is under way. the second game, if you plan on going down, still sunny, right around 7:00. sunset, after that. breezy around the game for the o's. don't miss tonight's cbs

i'm vic carter. >> and i'm denise koch. here's what people are talking about. >> prosecution for john edwards case is handing off. today, jurors heard about his political ambitions. >> reporter: john edwards' former adviser took the stand and testified how edwards angled for a job, after he realized he had lost his bid for the white house. leo henry said, even as edwards' affair was leaking to the public in 2008, the candidate asked him to approach the obama campaign about becoming vice president or attorney general. he said that a nomination for hillary clinton would be destructive. edwards said he had one day to be a supreme court justice. >> he had raw im -- ambition and wasob constantly in the game, so to speak, to find his role in politics. >> reporter: edwards is accused of using campaign contributions

to hide his affair with rielle hunter. prosecutors showed how $319,000 in cash went to hunter's hotels, jets and things. >> now, the defense gets to present its case. and the big question, should john edwards take the stand in his own defense? >> if he comes to the jury box with a lot of strikes against him and sort of asks them to resurrect their own credibility, under these circumstances, it will be quite a challenge. >> reporter: for a dramatic closing flourish, prosecutors turn to the words of john edwards himself. they played a tape of a tv interview, where edwards was seen telling lies. the defense will begin its case on monday. in greensboro, north carolina, wjz eyewitness news. >> john edwards has pleaded not guilt to campaign finance violations. new concerns over who leaked the story about the double agent that infiltrated al qaeda and helped foil a bomb

plot. kai is in the newsroom with more. >> the intelligence officials say the intelligence committee has begun internal reviews into leaks. the saudi agent who ruined the plot has provided information to the cia for two years. but when the story of the thwarted plot leaks to the u.s., it also likely reached the master bomb maker, ibrahim alasiry. he is believed to still be training others to use bombs. >> the director of the cia is calling for an across-the-board review of how this information got out. steve powell is accused -- father-in-law of steven powell is accused of secretly videotaping girls using the bathroom. >> he showed me a picture of myself. a picture of my oldest daughter and my youngert daughter. and he asked me to identify them.

>> reporter: we can't show you the face of this woman, and can only identify by the initials d.c. prosecutors say powell took pictures from the home. d.c. testified she had no knowledge of those pictures until a pierce county sheriff's detective showed them to her. >> he explained to me that when we had lived at our rental house, that our neighbor had been taking pictures of us. >> reporter: d.c. teared up as she testified that picture the -- pictures entered into evidence showed her little girls, many of them showing them using the bathroom, changing clothes. >> both girls were the victims of a voyeur. >> reporter: powell spent thousands of hours targeting women and girls in his neighborhood. before trial, judge ronald culpepper reviewed videos.

hours of videos and still seized during a search for evidence in the case of susan cox-powell last year. powell's defense team told the jury they will not present a case, saying only that they'll challenge the sufficient -- sufficiency of the prosecution's case. >> i don't think mr. powell will testify. >> reporter: one thing jurors won't hear about is susan powell, even though healogiedly -- he allegedly took video of her. powell has been missing since 2009. first drug to prevent hiv. >> reporter: well, denise. truvata was approved in 2004 to treat people already infected with hiv. but now, experts say it could help prevent hiv altogether. they're basing the decision on groundbreaking studies, conducted among gay men and heterosexual couples, at high risk of becoming infected with

hiv. those trials showed that truvatta cut the risk of infection by at least 44%. aid advocates worry this could create a false sense of security. >> reporter: an estimated 1.2 million americans have hiv. a swirling dust storm strikes arizona. the wave of dust, also known as a haboob, ran through january. they are known for starting two house fires. the national weather service says the dust storm was caused by winds heading in different directions. >> well, not like that. but a pretty windy day around maryland. as the sun makes a return. taking a live look outside. mostly clear and mild. will the rest of our workweek. not much left of it now. be rain-free. wjz has weather and traffic together. >> beautiful afternoon. a bit breezy. in some spots, pretty chilly. take a look at radar. a few pop-up showers across portions of pennsylvania. did find one, right up there in

northern sections of frederick county. but that's it. most areas are seeing a lot of dry conditions. but it is quite breezy. temperature-wise, around the state. cool spot, far western maryland. oakland is only 46 now with a breeze. there will be scattered frosts. some of those mountain valleys. 70 in pax river. but we still have some breezes. right now, current winds around the area. 18 here. 31 in hagerstown. 7 in oakland. we're had strong wind gusts as well. as you can see, 25 to almost 35 miles an hour. the winds will slowly diminish tonight. tonight looks like a near perfect day. and looks looic a -- like a great weekend for mother's day as well. >> let's check in on the roads with kristy breslin at wjz traffic control. well, the beltway is just a mess. and it's pretty bad for such an early time on. traveling on the inner loop. slowing there from park heights to dulaney valley.

hundreds of soccer fans clash with riot police after their team clinches a title. fans threw bottles and candles at officers. officers surrounded a popular fountain, preventing fans from celebrating. a toacts of 12 fans and one policeman were injured. all of the passengers on board a russian plane are feared dead, after the wreckage is found in the mountains of indonesia. you can see some of the debris scattered along the side of this volcano. the brand-new jet disappeared during a demonstration flight. 45 people were on board at the time. rescuers have yet to find any survivors. two deadly blasts rocked the syrian capital of damascus. at least 55 people were killed

and hundreds injured. it's now the deadliest attack since the uprising began more than a year ago. >> reporter: amateur video captured the smoke. and the chaos that followed. as it hit during rush hour, on the streets of damascus, the powerful blast destroyed buildings, mangled cars, and left huge craters in the roadway. government authorities say the two suicide car bombers used one ton of explosives. killing more than 50 people. and injuring 350 others. the wounded crowded hospital. supporters of embattled president, barbar assad protested. >> these are deplorable acts. it needs to stop. >> the u.n. brokered a cease- fire months ago. the regime blames the bombing.

but the free syrian army claims its supporters have not been violent since the cease-fire. monica villamizar, wjz eyewitness news. testimony continues today in the trial of confessed mass murderer, anders breivik. >> the survivors of brevick's rampage said he had a cry of joy that he carried out at a youth camp. >> another witness told the court breivik fired on people who tried to swim for safety. he is accused of killing 69 teenagers at the camp last july, after carrying out a bombing in oslo, which left eight people dead. brechic did ask a judge if he himself could question survivors. but that request was denied. even though breivik admits to the killing, he denies killing,

>> the couple is now charged with malicious punishment of a child. long island's so-called hot dog hooker is back in business, nearly one week after she is arrested on prostitution charges. jessica schneider reports for wjz. >> reporter: the men were flocking and the horns hocking as the alleged hot dog hooker reclaims her post here on the sunrise highway. she fought through the pouring rain, to reopen after five days in the slammer. she is charged with prostitution, after she said an undercover cop bought a hog hot dog with a lap dance on the side. and then asked her for a sex act. >> but they have no tape of a sexual act. i think they should throw it out of court and drop it. i want to go on with my life, sell my hog hot dogs -- hot dogs and go on. >> she said what she is doing is not illegal. she is simply selling to those who are interested. >> she's got a job, too.

here's a live look outside right now. what a beautiful afternoon. nice day. chopper 13. >> refreshing. >> it's been a little cool in the shade. temperatures most places. mu mid- to upper 60s. and with the breeze, it probably dropped down to more like 60. tonight, it's going to be kind of chilly. winds will die down. i expect some of the colder suburban areas, literally 20, 30 miles north of the city, may get down to 38, 39 degrees tonight. it will be chilly. but it will warm up during the next several days. take a look at temps now, with beautiful sunshine and clouds. 68. 38 is your dew point. and that's pretty low.

humidity only 33%. west/northwest winds, currently still at 18. we had gusts to 30, 35-mile-an- hour range this afternoon. barometer, rising. 29.73 right now. look at that. already down to 46 in oakland. some of these mountain areas, particularly in western virginia and western pa, will see scattered frost tonight as it gets down into the mid-30s. 70 in pax river. and 64, oakland and ocean city and elkton right now. 66 down by the bay in rock hall, annapolis, and kent island, at 67. so the rain we saw. there it is. gone. now, we had, at the airport, a little more than a third of an inch. but some areas north of the city and northwest of the city, picked up over an inch the last two days. we'll show you those at 5:00. there's the rain moving offshore. low pressure up across eastern portions of canada, driving that dryer air into the region. as high pressure builds in. now, we even have a little bit of cold air coming in aloft. popping up a few showers this afternoon.
