behind a marijuana-growing operation. howard county police seized 341 plants in the basement of his laurel townhouse, part of a sophisticated irrigation system. >> he had high-intensity lights,air filters, a water pumping system, a ventilation system. so this is what we consider to be a sophisticated grow operation for sometime. >> reporter: wjz has uncovered another part of his past. from 2003 to 2006, he worked as a technician for the crime labs. a spokesperson confirms he was responsible for collecting evidence at the scene. court records show he works more than 100 cases, including homicides. >> he dresses up. and from what i can tell, he had a nice car. and he has a nice place. so i thought he had like a pretty normal life. obviously not. >> reporter: police say they started their investigation, when someone reported suspicious activity. but all of the neighbors we spoke with say they had no idea what was going on.

>> it just blows my mind. that it was right there in that house and no one knew it. it had to have obviously been going on for years, if that much to be in there. and that's just how much they caught. how much did they get out of there? >> reporter: lis say the -- police say the marijuana they found is worth more than half a million dollars. >> our investigation will continue into what is happening with those drugs after they leave the residence. >> reporter: and police are also investigating whether this is an each bigger operation, with more players. as for uni, here's been released on a $25,000 bond. live in ellicott city, weijia jiang, wjz eyewitness news. >> uni left the baltimore police department in 2006 for an undisclosed reason. a man learns his sentence for murdering a state police trooper. vic is in the newsroom with more on the convicted killer's punishment. >> reporter: williams will spend the rest of his life in prison. it's his sentence for murdering trooper wesley brown.

who was working part time as a security guard at an appleby's. williams will not have the chance for parole. kai, back to you. >> williams is also convicted of multiple weapons crimes. difficult deliberations. a jury still considering the robocall case against political consultant julius henson. wjz is live at the mitchell courthouse. derek valcourt has an update on efforts to reach a verdict. derek? >> reporter: well, they just sent out a note, a little while ago, from the jury. they said they were tired. they wanted to go home after nearly eight hours of deliberations. still no verdict. >> reporter: as democrat martin o'malley and republican bob ehrlich squared off in a 2010 rematch. ehrlich's campaign consultant, julius henson, wrote and sent a robocall to thousands of democrats before polls closed on election night, suggesting there was no need to go vote because o'malley was already winning. >> relax, everything is fine.

the only thing left is to watch it on tv tonight. >> reporter: prosecutors argue that robocall was an illegal attempt to supress african american turnout through deceit. and they say the call was misleading because it did not require the legally-- did not have the legally required tag line saying it was the ehrlich campaign. >> we think it was fraud lent. it wasn't just political speech. it was fraudulent speech. >> reporter: but henson says it was reverse psychology, meant to get people to vote for ehrlich. and he blamed his convicted coconspirator schurick for leaving off the required tag line. >> it comes down to mr. schurick, in the early campaign, had to -- it was their responsibility to put a authority line on that call. i recommended they do so. i went around him to get them to do so. they refused. that is not my responsibility.

>> reporter: back in december, bob ehrlich's campaign manager, paul schurick, was convicted by a jury, after his jury deliberated for a little more than four hours. this jury will now return to deliberate julius henson's fate tomorrow morning. live at the courthouse, derek valcourt, wjz eyewitness news. >> derek, thank you. those charges are punishable by thousands of dollars in fines ask up to 12 years of possible prison time. an anne arundel county man is accused of attacking police officers in shady side. police say they responded to a 911 call on nick road and found 41-year-old rico smith, armed with a knife. that's when smith allegedly tried to grab an officer's weapon and bit a second officer in the leg. police used a taser to subdue him. he faces multiple charges, include reckless endangerment. it's an issue, dividing the country. president obama's support of same-sex marriage is drawing reaction from both sides of the debate.

randall pinkston is at the white house, with the latest political fallout. >> reporter: the president is off, raising money on the west coast, after declaring his support for same-sex marriage. he's swinging through seattle, before hitting hollywood, where other high-profile backers are expected to help him raise nearly $15 million. the obama campaign is already out with a new internet ad, calling his republican opponent, backwards on equality. >> it had to do about with who he is, what high stands for, what he believe, what he thinks is right for america. our families, our values, and our faith in the future. anything about the politics is incidental. >> reporter: the same-sex marriage issue took republican presidential hopeful mitt romney off message thursday. he's on the defense about a washington post article, suggesting that he bullied a gay classmate in high school. >> reporter: in a radio interview, romney apologized if he offended anyone with what he

here are some of the stories people are talking about tonight. the impact of president obama's bold new stand in favor of same- sex marriage. people on both sides are speculating on how the president's announcement could affect maryland if the issue goes to voters in november. wjz is live. political reporter pat warren looks at the possible outcomes. pat? >> reporter: of course, mary, this is a victory for same-sex marriage advocates. but the president's position, will it influence maryland voters? remains to be seen. >> reporter: president obama's support of same-sex marriage puts smiles on the faces of advocates. but does it have any teeth on the polls? >> i think it's like giving the stamp of approval. it's like, i'm president. he added some validity to it. >> they are each in a committed same-sex relationship. and believe the president's influence will influence the marriage referendum.

>> you said it from the president. how can you say that you're against marriage equality? >> i think in maryland, it may be a wash. >> reporter: they believe it may energize people to vote on both sides. and if it does translate into votes, it's more likely to motivate opponents. >> i would say it's a net gain for those in maryland who are more likely to come out on this issue. >> reporter: while there is disagreement on the effect, there is little doubt about the president's sincerity. >> i think people are going to look at the way barack obama came around on the issue of marriage equality. they're going to say, i sit around the table with my family. i know gay and lesbian people. and i know their families are the same as my families. >> i think he's doing what he thinks is right. >> reporter: and same-sex marriage supporters are working on their own information drive, while those who are petitioning for referendum have until the end of next month to turn in

their signatures. reporting live, i'm pat warren. back to you. >> thank you. election day is november 6th. aberdeen police are searching for a man who robbed a panerra bread restaurant at gunpoint. police say the man displayed a gun and demanded cash. the suspect ran from the scene. no one was hurt. police are asking anyone with information to call them. >> reporter: panic in a pennsylvania neighborhood after an elderly woman finds bombs in her kitchen. des he is in the newsroom with- - denise is in the newsroom with more on why her own son is to blame. >> reporter: police in warring ton say the woman called police after she found a pipe bomb. and then they found two more in the home. two dozen nearby homes were evacuated. which authorities say were capable of harming people. police later pulled over the woman's 50-year-old son and took him into custody. he now faces a slew of charges, including manufacturing weapons of mass destruction and risking a catastrophe. mary? >> all right, geniece --

denise. thank you. the atf is now analyzing the bomb-making materials. >> authorities continue the massive manhunt for murder and massive manhunt for adam mayes. he is believed to be on the run with 12- and 8-year-old sisters. the bodies of their mother and older sister were found. mayes was staying with the family the day they disappeared. prosecution wrapping up corruption charges against john edwards. he is accused of violating campaign finance laws to cover up his affair. today, jurors heard about his political ambitions. >> reporter: john edwards' former adviser took the stand and testified how he angled if are a job, after he lost his bid for the white house. leo henry said, even as the affair was leaking to the public in early 2008, the candidate asked him to approach the obama campaign.

they played a tape of a tv interview, where edwards was seen telling lies. the defense will begin its case on monday. in greensboro, north carolina, dick brennan, wjz eyewitness news. >> john edwards pleaded not guilty to six counts of campaign finance violations, related to about $1 million in secret payments. we have breaking news out of boston. a plane makes a crash-landing after a passenger tries to open a cockpit door, midflight. you're looking live at the airport. the man was restrained on the plane. and state police have taken him into custody. the u.s. airways flight is operated by air wisconsin. it originally took off from maine and was headed to philadelphia. the food and drug administration is debating whether to approve the first drug to prevent hiv. an fda panel is leading today in maryland to discuss truvat a. studies show the pill is safe and effective for preventing the spread of hiv. but not everyone thinks it should be used for prevention.

busiest day of the year. saturday is sill bern market day. >> it's very important because it supports our operations for the year. >> al, how long have you been doing this? >> i have been master gardener for 20 years. >> ray lot of work goes into making market day memorable. >> so we sart in march, planning what we're going to do. and then we start planning our vegetables and so forth. engaging them in they're prime time to be sold. >> get here early. so you can buy what you want. >> they start lining up probably around 7:00. yeah. and the doors don't open until 8:00. >> folks in baltimore love their tomato plants. and on sill bern market day, you'll have a variety to choose from. >> we have the aromas. the big beef stakes. celebrities, which is my favorite. all kinds of tomatoes. >> reporter: also a chance to see the sillbern mansion, built in 1883.
