for two and a half years, international aid worker allen gross sits in a cuban prison cell. the baltimore native is accused of being a spy, sentenced to 15 years behind bars for smuggling illegal communications equipment into cuba. now a cuban official indicates the country may be willing to release him. >> we are ready to sit down to talk and to have a negotiation on this mather. >> reporter: gross maintains he came to cuba as an aid worker to bring technology to the cuban, jewish community. they insist he was working for the u.s. government. cuba wants the u.s. oh to release the cuban five, five cuban spies convicted of espionage in 2001. >> we have concerns related to the situation. >> reporter: secretary of state hillary clinton has called for gross to be freed

unconditionally. his family are fighting for a humanitarian release. in a rare interview, gross' wife says she's worried that may never happen. >> i'm getting more hopeless all the time. i really don't know anymore. seems like we've crossed every bridge, have done so many things, and we keep coming up against a brick wall. >> reporter: now, new hope this latest development could be the break they've been waiting for. and tonight, wjz spoke with an official from the state department who told us they could not confirm if the u.s. was negotiating with cuba. >> thank you. allen gross is pushing for a temporary release to visit his terminally ill mother. breaking news in the search for a miss miss fugitive and the two girls he kidnapped. he shot and killed himself tonight as swat teams moved to

arrest him. the sisters ages 12 and 8 have been found safe. mais was accused of killing their mother and sister to get to the two youngest daughters. a massive pot bust. a former employee of the baltimore police department is charged with what could be a much bigger operation. we have the latest. >> reporter: the alleged master mind behind a massive marijuana growing operation. howard county police seized 341 plants in the basement of this townhouse, part of a sophisticated irrigation system. he has high intensity lights, air filters, a water pumping system, a ventilation system. it's a sophisticated grow operation that's been going on for sometime. uncovered another part of the stunning past. from 2003-2006, he worked as a technician for the baltimore

city police crime lab. a spokesperson confirms he was responsible for collecting and processing evidence from scenes. court records show he worked more than 100 cases, including some homicides. police say they started their investigation when someone reported suspicious activity. all the neighbors we spoke with said they had no idea what was going on. >> it just blows my mind that it was right there in that house and no one knew. it had to have been going on for years, and that's just what they caught. >> reporter: police say the 170 pounds of marijuana they found is worth more than half a million dollars. >> our investigation will continue into what was happening with those drugs after they left this residence. >> reporter: police are investigating if this is part of a bigger operation with even more players. released from jail on a $25,000 bond. >> uni left the baltimore police

department in 2006 for an undisclosed reason. the jury goes home without a verdict in the robocalls trial. accused of sending misleading messages to voters on the night of the 2010 elections. prosecutors say the call was meant to suppress african american votes. she claims it was bended as reverse psychologiy. the prosecution rests in another high-profile political trial. former presidential candidate john edwards accused of violating campaign finance laws to cover up his extramarital affair. prosecutors closed their case with a dramatic flourish playing an interview he did with abc news. >> i made a very serious mistake. >> he admits to the affair but repeatedly denies fathering her child. edwards looked somber while his words played in court. a former advisor testified how edwards angled for a job after

losing his bid for the white house. even as edwards affair was leaking to the public this early 2008, the candidates asked him to approach the obama campaign about becoming vice president or attorney general. he had discussions with hillary clinton's campaign too. edwards' goal was to be a supreme court justice. >> he was constantly in the game to find some role for himself in politics. >> he's charged with scheming to use illegal campaign contributions to hide his affair with hunter. the prosecution wrapped up its case without calling her. the question tonight is, will edwards take the stand in his own defense? >> he comes to that jury box with a lot of strikes against him. asking someone to resurrect their own credibility under

>> reporter: the terrifying moments still haunt william short and dana hayes. both spoke to wjz about the day hayes was monitoring a routine visit. they were inside a conference room at baltimore social services complex when all hell broke loose. >> a lady just stabbed her baby. >> reporter: the mom grabbed a knife from her purse and began stabbing her infant. >> she's real dangerous. >> reporter: hayes screams. >> oh, my god. god, help. >> reporter: her friend and co-worker leapt into action taking a chair and throwing it at the mom before she could stab the baby again. >> i was totally scared. i just had to act, you know? it's real and it's a baby. >> knowing that if you don't act, this could be it for that

mind. i probably will never forget. >> reporter: neither will forget the moment they learned the baby was going to live. >> the time where i felt i really wanted to cry was when they said she was okay. >> i felt like 10,000 bricks were just removed off of my shoulders. >> this experience has made me stronger and a better person. the end result is pretty diamond, and she's okay. >> the baby pretty diamond is recovering and out of the hospital. her mother remains in jail charged with attempted murder. in the health watch, an hiv drug is closer to a landmark approval. recommended the use of truvida to prevent hiv. it's marketed as a treatment for people infected with the virus. it could give users a false sense of security and lead to riskier sexual behavior.
