sex, lies and politics. john edwards on trial for huge cash payments to his mistress. >> the defense rests. but did the former presidential candidate take the stand? >> hi. i'm kai jackson. >> and i'm mary bubala. here's what people are talking about. >> the man who once wanted to be president, now, john edwards faces serious prison time if convicted of using money to cover up an affair. john john edwards' defense team rested their case, after just 2 1/2 days of testimony, without calling edwards' daughter cate, his mistress, rielle hunter, or the defendant himself. defense attorneys apparently felt they made their case, that he did not use campaign money to cover up the affair. >> the advantage of not putting him on the stand is it takes

away the government's ability to say john edwards lied and then got up and lied to you. >> reporter: the defense tried to stick to campaign finance law. the prosecution says edwards accepted illegal donations to cover up his affair, and to try to save his presidential campaign. but the defense says the money was a gift and that edwards hid the affair, only to save his wife and family humiliation. >> the key to this whole case at this point is what is the definition of a campaign contribution. >> reporter: they could begin deliberating friday. in greens or -- greensboro, north carolina, dick brennan, wjz eyewitness news. >> it could bring a total of 30 years in prison and more than a million dollars in fines if convicted on all counts. let's make a deal. an agreement to hike taxes for thousands of marylanders. jessica kartalija is live in the newsroom to explain what lawmakers accomplished today. jessica? >> reporter: mary, a budget

package is approved. bringing to an end the special session the house broke on party lines to raise income taxes on people who make more than $1 million a year. and for those who make more than $150,000. also, a bill to split teacher pension costs with individual counties and to raise taxes on tobacco, other than sig relatives. sig relatives. -- cigarettes. the general assembly failed to pass a budget during its 90-day session. >> the budget now goes to governor martin o'malley for his signature. on the right track, the city approves a new group to take over the baltimore grand prix. and it involves a big name in indy car racing. adam may has more on the new team and what the race means for the city. >> reporter: the first two business deals crashed and burned. but now, city officials believe that this third deal will make it to the finish line.

>> after many twists and turns with business agreements, the baltimore grand prix is officially back on. this morning, the city board of estimates approves a deal with two groups. race on. >> we have been in the city for a long time. this is a world class sit citythat deserves a world class event. >> it requires an up-front payment. last year's inaugural race brought 150,000 spectators to downtown baltimore at an economic impact of almost $50 million, filling city and state coffers with almost $2 million each. >> race fans, race drivers, all thought baltimore was the best race in the circuit last year. i'm looking forward to seeing the success again this year. >> reporter: and the race is scheduled for labor day weekend. organizers are hoping for an even bigger turnout than last year. adam may, wjz eyewitness news. >> and hear from michael

andretti and his expectations from the baltimore grand prix. all new on eyewitness news at 5:00 and 6:00. break news from northwest baltimore. sky eye chopper 13 is over the 3300 block of mondawmin avenue. you can see a car has crashed into the front porch of the home. it's unclear if anyone is hurt. we'll bring you updates on this accident, as soon as we receive them. new details today about a drug raid at a baltimore county pain management clinic. two people are in custody right now. about 25 county narcotics officers joined federal drug agents to raid the healthy life clinic on york road in lutherville. it is part an ongoing investigation into the sale of powerful painkillers and other drugs. the two are scheduled to appear before a baltimore county circuit court judge tomorrow. some new twists in the trayvon martin murder case. court records show george zimmerman had a pair of black eyes and a broken nose after fatally shooting the florida teen during the confrontation.

as rick vincent reports, attorneys say the injuries prove one thing. >> reporter: george zimmerman went to his family doctor, the day after trayvon martin was killed. sources would detail knowledge of the investigation, confirm the doctor wrote a private medical report that specified zimmerman's injuries. it said he had a closed fracture of his nose, two black eyes and two cuts on the back of his head. it also said that the doctor recommended that zimmerman follow up with a doctor but he did not. an attorney for martin's family reacted to the news. >> what we do know is that on february 26th, the e.r. person there didn't believe his injuries were significant enough for him to go to the hospital. they didn't each put a band-aid on his head. let's not forget that trayvon martin was fighting a man with a gun. he was in a battle for his life that tragically he lost. >> reporter: wjz says the

autopsy shows he had knuckle injuries. they claim that could prove that he was attacked by martin. >> trayvon was fighting for his life. >> that's why you're saying he would have this. >> absolutely. he was fighting for his life. if somebody had ray gun, i want to fight for my life. >> zimmerman is free on $150,000 bail. he hasn't been seen since his bail hearing nearly a month ago. when catholics in maryland are welcoming baltimore's 16th archbishop. alex demetrick is live with more on the mass installing reverend william laurie. >> reverend laurie is now arch bish uponop laurie. and he'll serve more than a million in the archdiocese of baltimore. >> reporter: among more than 300 priests, bishops and cardinals attending the mass. the two-hour -- two-hour service is filled with rituals

dragging its tail right across maryland. and the lower edge of that could move across the mountains into western maryland. but you see, the bulk of it is in central pennsylvania. decent thunderstorms. really, we have a slim chance of a shower or thundershower this afternoon. 81 degree our temperature. as high as 81 degrees today. take a look around the region. 73 on the shore. we have 70 in oakland. but everyone teetering right on that 80-degree mark. the normal high for this date is just around 74. so we are well above that. we'll talk about how our week plays out coming up in your complete updated first warning forecast. kai? >> let's check on the roads with kristy breslin at wjz traffic control. hi, kristy. hi, kai. hi, everyone. we have a lot of traffic building out there this afternoon. traveling on the north side inner loop. stop and go there from york road to dulaney valley. west side inner loop, 15 minutes from baltimore national pikes, past security boulevard. and 70 eastbound, having trouble in that direction. you'll see plenty of brake lights as you make your way towards the beltway.

there is a new piece of gear to minimize the risk of injury to a soldier's groin area. armored underwear is now standard in the military for both men and women in combat roles. as you can see, it looks like a pair of bicycle shorts. and they've earned the nickname kevlar boxers, since the pelvic protection gear has been in use to the region, have dropped significantly. crashing into a moose seems like something you would never forget. but that's not the case for one canadian driver. michelle higgins hit a moose, lost all memory of the accident and then still managed to drive 25 miles to arrive at work that day. how is that possible she drove in that car? her coworker saw her bloody and swollen face and took her to the hospital. higgins suffered a couple of broken bones and bruises, but otherwise is okay. the moose was not so lucky. he was found dead at the scene of the accident. >> wow. a new super summer.

city initiative kicked off today in east baltimore. monique griego explains how you make the most of your child's time off. >> reporter: when kids ditch the classroom for summer break, for many parents, the stress begins. >> kids tend to drive you crazy. >> reporter: to avoid a summer slump, leaders say it's important to keep the body busy and their minds sharp. >> what we know is that kids lose a lot of their learning over the summer if they don't continue to read and learn and practice what they've just learned. >> reporter: the enoch pratt library is one of the places teaming up to help prevent loss. through its new summer initiative. it kicked off at hughes elementary. >> this is a way of ensuring that we are maximizing not only the quantity but the quality available to our younger people over the summer. >> reporter: there will be a variety of programs that will help students stay up on the reading, math and other subjects. >> it's a place where kids can

update. new figures suggest the housing markets may be stabilizing. builders broke ground ground on more homes than expected in april. new home construction rose 2.6%. facebook is boosting the size of its ipo this friday. 25%. as investors clamor for a chance to own the internet stock. the company is also doing some damage control, days before its market debut, after general motors said it will stop advertising on the social network because users aren't clicking on its ads. jc penney stock plummeted as much as 15%, after the department store chain lost more money than expected last quarter. experts say it seemed shoppers were turned off by the new plan to get rid of sales throughout the year in favor of everyday low pricing. investors bid up low prices at target. after the biggest sales jump in six years. analysts say target results show that they are spending cautiously. and falling prices are putting

all swaddled up as they say. >> that's right. let's head over to tim. the weather is really beautiful out there today, tim. >> not too hot. andrea made it through. without the really hot weather. i'm sure they're both comfortable this morning, this afternoon, this evening, today. let's take a look at our current temperatures. we're lookath temperature -- looking at temperatures above the average for the year. our daytime high 74 degrees. we're at 81. and we have been as high as about 83. so our official numbers will come in here in just a little while. the dew point now at 53. relative humidity currently at 38%. winds west/southwest. it's going to rise here in the next few days. look at this temperature range. the lowest reading now. 70 in oakland. 78 on patuxent river. then you start to hit 80s on the state. 80 toward hagerstown. we have 85 now in westminster. 81 in clump qua. and 75 in annapolis, kent

island. near the water, a little cooler. water temperatures on the bay, cooler at 66 degrees. winds coming in uniformly, south and southwest. most of the state is helping to bring in that warm air. most of our neighbors around the general region are in the same region we are. there's no drastic change. the front that brought us the change and the shower over the last few days is now clearing the area. still a little bit of a line here, though, of light showers, just around the ohio valley. and going back toward the great lakes. that's still cooling it down a little bit. the lower edge of that system is starting to sweep across central pennsylvania. there is a little back toward the lower edge of ohio that could make its way across west virginia. but all accounts -- by all accounts, most of that is not going to make it over the mountains. and by the time we start to dry out this evening and the temperatures start to drop, we'll lose most of that. high pressure into the foreseeable future. looks like we'll have pretty nice sunshine. there's a slight chance for shower heading into the weekend with that system so close, off

it is 4:29. 81 degrees and sunny. hello. thanks for staying with eyewitness news. i'm denise koch. and i'm vic carter. here's what people are talking about. >> another ugly battle over the budget is shaping up over washington. republicans say it will only get down to conditions. danielle nottingham reports for wjz from washington. >> reporter: president obama stopped by a washington, d.c. sandwich shop to highlight part of his to-do list for congress. >> one of the items on that to- do list would be to provide tax breaks for companies like these that are hiring new employees or raising the wages and salaries of their existing employees.

>> reporter: the president brought sandwiches back to the white house for a meeting with congressional leaders. he pressed his to-do list with them. and turned to what is shaping up to be another showdown over the budget and national debt. republican leaders say they will not raise the country's debt limit without big spending cuts. >> where is the president's plan to tackle our looming debt crisis. where is the budget -- where is the president's plan, to stop the largest tax increase in american history. >> reporter: last summer, the debt crisis created a bitter standoff between the president and congress, something the white house is trying to avoid this election year. >> we're not going to recreate the debt ceiling debacle of last august. >> reporter: on the senate floor, lawmakers were already digging in their heels. >> as far as i can tell, their only plan is to take shots at our plan and hope nobody notices they don't have one of their own. >> they don't mind wasting our time on useless political

showboats. >> reporter: republicans are resisting any tax increase. at the white house, danielle nottingham, wjz eyewitness news. >> now, the treasury secretary says if the debt ceiling is not raised by the end of this year, the country will default on its loans. legal action against espn. the wife of fired assistant basketball coach is suing. >> laurie fine claims the cable network ruined her reputation. she is threatening to file a libel lawsuit against espn and two employees. this comes after her husband, bernie fine, was accused of molesting two former ball boys. fine broke her silence today to talk about the accusations against her. >> i'm here today as a wife and a mother who has had to endure the trauma of being smeared in the public as a monster.

my family and close friends have stood by me. they know that i am a kind and loving person, but my life has been destroyed through the defamation that i have suffered. >> fine alleges in the lawsuit she was falsely accused. knowing about the alleged molestation. >> kai, thank you. fine has denied wrongdoing and has never been charged because of the statute of limitations. just days after his death, the southern california home of nfl legend junior seau is robbed. police say suspects broke into the garage, rummaged through cabinets and eventually left with a few mementos and a bicycle. junior seauo children and movers are now packing up all of the late football player's belongings. >> i think it's horrible that someone would even break into someone's house, after a tragedy like that. >> it's just pretty sick ask disgusting, actually. >> reporter: so far, police have not made any arrests in the burglary. seau committed suicide two weeks ago by shooting himself in the chest at his home.

a shocking murder suicide case in florida. police say a mother killed her four children, all under the age of 18, then turned the gun on herself. the neighborhood of cape canaveral is stunned. >> reporter: deputies stormed into this quiet neighborhood this morning because they didn't know what they were up against. they thought it was a standoff, after seeing a woman on this block pacing with a gun. and after getting a 911 call that all of these children had been shot. neighbors didn't know either. >> she started to cry on the phone with me. she started to cry. and like i just felt really bad. >> reporter: this neighbor called her daughter after she heard the gunshots and learned that these four boys and girls, the youngest only 12, the oldest, 17, were all dead. >> that's what's hard. that is very hard. >> i understand, too, from the information that we're getting, it appears these children were all killed probably either before or det deputies arrive. >> reporter: deputies say tanya thomas killed the children and then herself, as soon as she saw patrol cars. they tell us just before 5:00

a.m., she decided to shoot the children a first time. three of them survived that first round and were able to run to a neighbor's house for help. but as soon as a neighbor opened the door, thomas called them back to her house, and they went, where she shot them a second time, but this time to death. >> i'm a father. i've got kids. i cannot comprehend a parent doing this to their children. particularly after they leave, calling them back in, so to speak, calling them back in to the slaughter, more or less. and calling them back in to shoot them. >> reporter: deputies entered cautiously not knowing if tanya, armed, was still a threat. they eventually found her dead in her home on brighton avenue. her four children found dead as well. the fourth, the oldest, pebbles thomas, laying in the front yard. >> investigators say they don't have a motive for the shooting and weren't sure where the

children followed their mother's order back into the house after being shot. take a look why. >> not my camera [ screaming ] >> yeah. the students were posing for pictures when the deck collapsed underneath them. everyone got away with minor bumps and scrapes and prom went on as planned. the family that owns the home says their insurance will cover the damage to the balcony. embarrassing blow to sketchers. -- skechers. >> reporter: skechers has agreed to pay $40 million to settle charges it misled customers about the health and fitness benefits of its toning sneakers. the federal trade commission announced the hefty fine today. according to the fcc, the shoe maker made unfounded claims that its $100 shapeup shoes would help people lose weight and tone muscles without going to the gym. this settlement also involves

the company's resistance runner, toner and toneup shoes. >> the settlement money will be used to provide refund toss those -- refunds to those who bought the toning sneakers. millions more americans could be deemed as addicts. that's because they are revising its definition. new guidelines while also reducing the number of symptoms required for a diagnosis. some say it will artificially inflate the number of people categorized as addicts. charges are filed against two men who police say tried to steal copper pipe from a state hospital that is closed. 29-year-old matthew blizzard and 43-year-old dennis dyer, each face a long list of charges. blizzard was arrested yesterday afternoon, after police were called for suspicious activity, at spring grove hospital. dyer escaped last night, after hiding in the building for several hours. what an incredible spring afternoon today. a live look outside right now. it's warm, with both clouds and

sun. so how does it look as we head into the weekend? wjz has weather and traffic together. bob is here with the update numbers from-- updated numbers from first warning weather. i've been tracking showers to the north of us right now. the chances of showers here are quickly diminishing because it's gotten much dryer. to the north, a couple of showers and thunderstorms across central p.a. but i don't think it has enough oomph for it to get to the baltimore region. in fact, take a look at temperatures -- temperatures and note the dew point has come wrai down -- way down. dew point down to 53. the 81 actually feels like 80 degrees. it's that much dryer out than it was yesterday. oakland, the actual temperature, at 70. 73 in ocean city. looks like a fantastic end to the week. and start of preakness. we'll have that forecast coming up. vic? let's check in on the roads real quick with kristy breslin at wjz traffic role. control. trouble -- control. trouble on northbound 95. we have an accident at pulaski

area. investigators say they do believe the girl was forcibly taken from her home. police have not said what evidence led them to change their mind about the case. and they have not named any suspects. investigators say they have interviewed more than 500 sex offenders and waded through more than 1,000 tips. another tragic turn in the deadly shooting of a family outside an ohio restaurant. a 10-year-old girl, critically injured in the shooting has died. outside the cracker barrel in cleveland, kayla allen's father shot her and also killed her younger sister and mother. police shot and killed kevin allen at the scene. he was apparently upset his wife told him she was leaving him. residents have installed bars to prevent break-ins in harris county. but now, the homeowners association say they must come down. apparently the bars hurt the property values. neighbors say they're worried about safety, after recent thefts in the area.

looks real. and there is a real message behind this april fool's prank by city officials. >> oh, april fools. >> i thought it was pretty funny. technology-based people keep their hands on their phone all the time and don't really watch where they're driving. >> reporter: they wanted to have people pay attention to the dangers of texting while driving. every four hours, someone is struck. the lane will stay in mace as a reminder, but only temporarily. but someone hopes it will become a permanent fixture. >> the texting lane may be relaxed. but officials say they hope the prank sheds light on a serious issue. a brutal attack on a u.s. soldier. and caught on tape. it happened while he was walking at a street. bill morgan has more. >> reporter: it begins with an unexpected punch. but once this shoulder is knocked to the pavement, four men unleash a relentless beat, punching and kicking as hard as

we had lots of temperatures. -- the humidity has dropped. we had dew points in the mid- 60s. much dryer air has come in. and pretty much put a kibosh on any shower activity here. take a look at temps right now. it is warm. warmer than normal. that's for sure. mid-70s would be normal. 81 now. but the dew point has continued to come down. it's way down to 53 degrees. it's going to be very comfortable later tonight. dew points will get down into the 40s. dry, beautiful air coming in. humidity only 38%. now, west to southwest winds at 5. barometer 29.86. currently falling a little bit. 68 now in oakland. 81 in the other side of the mountains and the valley at cumberland. and ocean city, down by the

beach there at 73. still 82 up in elkton. but the dew point is continuing to come down. just a few scattered clouds around. kent island, very nice by the bay. and still low 80s to the north and west. but it will get dryer and cooler over the next couple of days. slight southwest breeze now. late tonight, more of a west/northwest breeze. and tomorrow, more of a northerly wind. dryer and cooler air for the next few days. looks really, really nice. heavy showers here in the western gulf of mexico area. just west of florida. excuse me. the eastern gulf. along the coast, here's showers as well. to our northwest, a front that is coming through michigan this afternoon. now, for the most part, most of the energy is across new york and pennsylvania. that's where we're seeing showers and thunderstorms. in our part of the world, it's just gotten so dry, the chance of showers, look at that skinny little line. has just about diminished to maybe about 10%. there may be one or two up in garrett county, western pennsylvania. but right now, pretty much taken that out of the forecast. showers down here. yes. behind this frontal boundary.
