race cars will speed through the streets. that deal was just signed today. what it means that this rush hour traffic will once again be replaced by the race cars. and the organizers believe it is going to be a big success. >> after many twists and turns with business agreements, the baltimore grand prix is officially back on. the city board of estimates has a deal with two groups. race on and andretti sports. >> we believed in the city for a long time. this is a world class city that deserves a world class event. >> reporter: the new organizers are well aware that last year's race managers went broke, failing to pay the city and numerous contractors. racing star, michael andretti. >> we're going to make sure that we get everybody behind this thing. and we're going to help them. and instead of having it be a hind rance to their business, we're going to try to help their business. >> reporter: the new contract

requires an up front pavement payment -- payment for city services. >> you said that you believe that baltimore could be the second best indy race after indianapolis. why is that? >> i think if you look at last year, i think it was just an amazing event. and that was just the first year. >> reporter: last year's inaugural race brought 650,000 to baltimore. an economic impact of almost $50 million, filling city and state coffers with almost $2 million each. >> race fans, drivers all thought baltimore was the biggest circuit last year. looking forward to it being a success this year. >> reporter: so the deal pretty much guarantees the race will be in town for five years, as long as the obligations are met on both sides. i asked michael andretti if he thinks it could go longer. he said yes. he sees the race here for 20 years or maybe even more. reporting live at the inner harbor tonight, adam may, wjz eyewitness news. >> and the race, of course, will be held labor day weekend. we want to update the

breaking news we first told you about last hour. a train accident in baltimore county. sky eye chopper 13 is over the scene. captain mike perry with the latest. mike? >> reporter: we're in the ruxton area of baltimore county. this accident occurred about an hour ago. we're going to roll tape and show you earlier. apparently a light rail chain going in the area of ruxton road, near carrollton road, struck a piece of mta maintenance equipment, which was also alongside the track. after striking that piece of equipment, it continued for a short period of time other where it stopped along balona avenue, near carrollton avenue. now one person on that train claimed to be injured. allegedly with head, neck and back injuries. that person was transported to a local area hospital. their condition is not known at this hour. if there were other people on the train, no one claimed injury. the train has since left. both baltimore county and transit police, as well as paramedics were on the scene. they have cleared the scene now. and that train is now

continuing northbound towards hidden valley. back to you on tv hill. >> thank you very much. captain mike perry, reporting for us. stay with wjz for updates on this accident. breaking news. two children fall. landing on the busy street below. mary is live in the newsroom with breaking details. mary? >> reporter: well, vic. a 5- and 7-year-old landed on the sidewalk, after falling out of a window. emergency crews rushed and quickly transported the children to the hopkins pediatric trauma center. it is unclear how the two fell. police are investigating. police say their injuries are serious but not life- threatening. vic? >> stay with wjz. we'll bring you any updates on the fall as we learn them. the special session ends with tax hikes for thousands of marylanders, after the general assembly approves a budget package that avoids painful cuts to education and public safety. wjz stays on the story. political reporter pat warren explains what happens next. >> some marylanders will be writing bigger checks and

getting smaller refunds. >> reporter: governor o'malley takes in the sun at the public event, while his tax hike foes raked him over the coals. and the governor ran around this session, mr. speaker, talking about every manner of tax increase. he wanted a sales tax increase. he wanted a gas tax increase. i couldn't keep track. they were coming out so -- every other day. i couldn't keep track of which proposal he was proposing next. >> reporter: today, he got an income tax increase. although the proposal originated in the house. and that's where it got final approval today. >> 1302, receiving constitutional majority is passed. >> 87% of the people over the state of maryland will have no increase, no increase in their taxes. 87%. and those who do ask who make a quarter of a million dollars, they will be paying $6.50 a week extra. >> reporter: single filers should see no increase up to $100,000.

>> stay with wjz for complete coverage as the world leaders come to maryland for the g8 summit. mary bubala will be live near camp david, while i'll be reporting from the white house. two baltimore county men are under arrest, accused of trying to swipe copper from a hospital. state police say matthew blizzard and dennis dyer were caught taking copper pipe from the spring grove hospital campus. investigators say dyer hid inside an abandoned building for several hours before he surrendered. police collected more than 130 pounds of copper pipe from the suspects. federal averages raid a baltimore county medical clinic, seizing evidence and making arrests. mike schuh reports, with new details of the bust and the year-long investigation. >> reporter: agents say this morning, out-of-state cars, continued to fill the parking lot in front of the healthy life medical group. this sign greeted them. federal agents and county police raided the clinic. took evidence, and shut it down. >> they're prescribing pills for nonmedical purposes. >> reporter: this federal

indictment states that four agents were prescribed pain pills here in towson but showed no symptoms of pain. had no hands-on exam by a doctor or physician's assistant. their prescription, 168 oxycontin, the maximum number of the highest dose. >> they went to see the doctor or the assistant from there. but it wasn't long. and very little questions asked. >> reporter: how big was their business? the feds say they saw 120 patients a day. charged them $3 to $350 in cash. and that makes $9 million a year. they were paying doctors $1200 a day to write the prescriptions. this dentist had an office nearby. he complained to police, almost as soon as the clinic opened in november. >> knew right away. we'd come in the morning. there would be cars filled here, four, five, six people in the car, all out of state. >> he's seen money, prescription and drugs change hands in the parking lot. >> i was worried that something

bad was going to happen. so we just kind. were-- were relieved that nothing bad happened. there were a lot of unsavory people hanging around. >> reporter: the feds say this investigation is far from over. the five doctors and physician's assistants who wrote the prescriptions are being scrutinized and their powers to prescribe may be taken away. in towson, mike schuh, wjz eyewitness news. back to you on tv hill. >> three people are arrested and in the county jail. police say for legal reasons, their names won't be released until tomorrow. some baltimore homeowners are furious tonight, over inflated water bills. the department of public works said two water meter readers didn't feel like checking the numbers. so they made the numbers up. people in the home ner and edward gardens area received inaccurate bills as a result. now, they are look to see if other employees submitted fake readings. mostly sunny. but is a shower on the way? wjz is live with first warning weather coverage. meteorologist tim williams and bob turk are updating the

steaming conditions. >> earlier today, we had higher dew points and humidity. it's dried out so much in the last several hours. chance of showers now, just about 10%, if that. most of the activity is holding off across pennsylvania and moving to the east. not advancing toward the maryland area. right now, the chance of showers tonight is just about not much. it's 81, yes. but the humidity is way, way down. in fact, the dew point only in the low 50s. it was in the mid and upper 60s yesterday. so dry air is moving in. that's going to stay with us through tz weekend. tim has a look at that forecast. tim? >> well, that front that brought us the rain has moved offshore. and that very weak front you saw with the showers up around new england and the great lakes, that stays to the north. high pressure along with that dry air bob was talking about is going to be here, well, it's actually here now and is going to stay with us for the foreseeable future. that high pressure means dry and delightful air, all around the mid-atlantic, up into new england. and down into the carolinas, before you start to see any

orchestrating a murder-for-hire plot pointed right to the defendant, when asked to identify the hitman. >> on the witness stand, 37- year-old chante hickman described the murder of her former boss, dr. albert roe, the details so gruesome, roe's wife burst out of the courtroom in tears. hickman said she hired her cousin as the hitman, 25-year- old dante jeter, who is on trial. hickman told jurors in 2006, she picked up jeter and two of his friends. she said the foursome went to the this was and beat roe to death. hickman said roe asked, please don't hurt me. and he said, take whatever you. and at one point, he said, oh, god. hickman admits to stealing checks from roe, more than $17,000 from roe. worried about getting caught, she ordered the hit. the defense says that she is

dry and really beautiful weather for thursday, friday, the preakness and even into sunday. perhaps by monday, more clouds. because we think as this front goes through the area later tonight, it will change the wind direction. but it is so few and far between. we've gotten so much dryer here. this front annual is going to-- frontage is going to wimp out. give us most of the activity well to our north and northeast. as you can see. i don't think it's going to ever make it through the mountain. garrett county may see a shower tonight. once the beautiful area of high pressure is going to sit over us the next couple of days. it will move off the east coast by the end of the weekend. it might help to develop the low pressure down across the kaleinas. -- carolinas. that could bring us clouds. but for the weekend, particularly friday and saturday, it looks really, really pleasant. north winds on the bay. 10 to 15 knots. still a little chilly. ocean temperature only in the low 60s, by the way.

we'll. here are some of the stories people are talking about tonight. john edwards will not testify at his trial. the defense finished up today, without calling him to the stand. the former presidential candidate is accused of violating campaign finance laws, as dick brennan reports for wjz, after closing arguments, the jury takes up edwards' fate. >> reporter: john edwards' defense team rested their case, after just 2 1/2 days of testimony, without calling edwards' daughter kate, his mistress, rile hunter or the defendant himself. the defense apparently felt they made their case to the jury, that john edwards was not guilty of using campaign money to cover up his affair. >> the advantage of not putting john edwards on the stand is it takes away the government the ability to say that john edwards lied and then he got up on the stand and lied to you. >> reporter: while talking about the sordid details of his affair with rielle hunter, the campaign tried to stick with campaign finance laws.

>> the prosecution said he used campaign funds. but the defense says the money was a gift. and that edwards hid the affair, only to save his wife and family humiliation. >> the key to this whole case at this point is the definition of what is a campaign contribution. >> reporter: closing arguments are scheduled for tomorrow, followed by the judge's instructions to the jurors. they could begin deliberating friday. in greensboro, wjz eyewitness news. >> edwards could face up to 30 years in prison if convicted on all accounts. there are reports of injuries. mary is live in the newsroom, with more on what a new medical report shows. mary? >> george zimmerman went to his family the day after he was killed. it says zimmerman had a broken nose, two black eyes and two cuts on the back of his head. and also recommended that zimmerman follow up with an ear, nose, and throat specialist. they shot and killed martin in

february, during a confrontation. zimmerman insists he shot in self-defense. he is currently free on $150,000 bail. vic, back to you. mary, thank you. he hasn't been seen since his bail hearing, nearly a month ago. baltimore county police call it a heinous crime. a couple is behind bars, charged with forcing a 15-year- old girl, to act as their personal sex slave. tonight, as gigi barnett explains, the couple distributed child pornography online to lure other victims. >> reporter: homeowners on wendell avenue, parkville county, described their neighborhood as a place for families. but police say between july and november last year, a couple in this house hid a 15-year-old sex slave. >> is a particularly heinous crime that involved the couple, deliberately recruiting a 15- year-old girl for the purposes of using her as a sex slave. >> reporter: detectives say 48- year-old john blase, and 46-

year-old margaret jones, met the teen on a singles website and chatted for a few mopghtdzs. when they learned she was in north carolina, they drove to that state, picked the girl up, and brought her back to wendell avenue. >> our investigation in baltimore county showed that they had sex with her multiple times a week. they videotaped her and photographed her. while having sex. and then they distributed those images on the internet. >> reporter: police say blase and jones, who were heavily into bondage and mas cism, wanted to use those to recruit more girls to join in. police say a mother called and reported her daughter a runaway, who was being abused by the couple. neighbors say they never knew what was happening down the street. >> it's terrible. that someone would abuse a child that age. it's unfathomable to think someone would do something like that. >> reporter: back in november, police obtained a search warrant in this house.

once nrksdz they found -- inside, they found several computers and flash drives. on the laptop, were several pictures of the 15-year-old in various stages of undress and bondage. >> in the meantime, the feds have conducted an investigation interest as well and levied federal charges against this couple. >> reporter: gigi barnett, wjz eyewitness news. >> and the couple now faces several charges, including destruction and -- or distribution and production of child pornography. the wife of fired syracuse university basketball coach, bernie fine, files a lawsuit against espn. bernie fine lost his job shortly after espn broke the story who accused fine of molestation. laurie fine said she is now suing espn. because the sports network allegedly overlooked the credibility of the accusers. >> they should apologize and retract these horrible lies reported about me. only after these defendants have taken responsibility for

the reprehensible actions, they should be held accountable and then justice will be served. >> fine has denied wrongdoing and has never been charged. espn says it stands by its reporting. president obama is taking on congress. he calls congressional leaders to the white house to talk about jobs and the budget. and as danielle nottingham reports, both parties already appear to be on a collision course. >> reporter: president obama stopped by a washington, d.c. sandwich shop to highlight part of his to-do list for congress. >> one of the items on that to- do list would be to provide tax breaks for companies like these, that are hiring new employees. or raising the wages and salaries of their existing employees. >> reporter: the president brought sandwiches back to the white house for a meeting with congressional leaders. he pressed his to-do list with them. then turned to what is shaping up to be another showdown over the budget and the gnarl debt. republican leaders say they

a vicious attack on a young soldier is caught on video in florida. a surveillance camera captures the soldier getting hit while walking down the street in tampa, florida. as he falls to the ground, more men join in on the brutal beating. police say the men stole the man's cell phone and wallet before taking off. a wildfire rages on in northern arizona. the wind continues to fuel the gladiator wildfire, making it tough for firefighters to gain

the upper hand. some areas are under mandatory evacuation orders. firefighters believe this particular fire started as a house fire. a california woman survives the impossible. and now she's talking about her horrifying ordeal. an 18-wheeler crashed into the back of kelly groves' car, leaving her, her 10-week-old, and 10-year-old daughters, dangling off the edge of a bridge for 2 1/2 hours. she said she began to pray and suddenly felt the presence of her father, who had recently passed away. >> i just said, daddy, you don't need these girls, i need them. don't take them, please. i feel that it was his hands holding us up. and when his hands got tired, he called in the sea bees. >> reporter: miraculously, the navy sea bees, a construction battalion from the navy, happened to be a few cars behind groves. and they had a heavy-duty forklift. and all three were rescued. beer flies at a baseball game in canada.

and i vigorously am fighting the previous allegations. i'll have another, along with every horse in our barn go through a real intense physical exam and blood and urine exam. and you know, we run pure horses. >> o'neill went on to say that he understands why he faces questions. ask sometime in the future, when the investigations are all complete, he will share his entire side of the story. late today, five-time preakness winning trainer bob aboveord arrived with bodie meister. bodie meister was a favorite but was overtaken in said stretch by i'll have another. but as expected, bodie meister is the morning line favorite for saturday. four horses arrived at pimlico today. eight of the 11 here. and in terms of some of the highlights for the lineup. tiger walk, owned by kevin plank, of underarmour. his first-ever entry.

mentioned bodie meister, the favorite. he will start in the 7 gate. he is listed as 8-5 in the favorite. and i'll have another, just two slots over in the 9 spot. he is the second favorite at 5- 2. dewayne lucas horse optimizer in the tenth spot is the 11th and final horse to load for saturday. the 137th preakness coming up on saturday. the preakness is a two- minute dash. it's more of a marathon. they're about a quarter through the long season. and the orioles still in first place, as they begin a road trip tonight in kansas city. after finishing up a long home stand, with an impressive win over the yankees, in kansas city last night. pitcher weien chen. he has been the o's best starter so far this reason. two more scoreless innings to finish it. jim johnson gets curtis granderson on a double play ball that ended in a 5-2 victory. o's now tie for first place.
