the queen of disco is gone. but her music lives on. ♪ [ music ] ♪ i need you, by me, beside me ♪ ♪ to guide me >> the world reacts to the death of donner summers. ♪ [ music ] >> hi. i'm kai jackson. here's what people are talking about. she electrified dance floors in the '70s and helped define the era of disco. today, donna summer passes away, following a battle with cancer. teresa garcia reports for wjz, the 63-year-old super star died at her florida home. ♪ [ music ] ♪ on the radio >> reporter: donna summer was a disco icon a music super star,

who sang much of the soundtrack of the 1970s. >> reporter: summers' family released a statement saying she died thursday morning and that they, quote, are at peace, celebrating her extraordinary life and her continued legacy. >> i heard the voice of god. and god said to me, you're going to be famous. and i began to tell people, god said to me i'm going to be famous. and they thought i was insane. but that's okay. i had the last laugh. >> reporter: she sang in the church choir and formed several music groups while she was growing up. she dropped out of high school and struggled to launch her career in europe. her breakout hit came in 1975, when the song "love to love you baby" became a disco anthem. ♪ [ music ] >> reporter: summer went on to win five grammys for her iconic hits, including last dance, hot stuff, and bad girls.

her music influenced '80s acts like duran duran and madonna. ♪ [ music ] >> reporter: at the height of her career, summer struggled with anxiety and depression. in her memoirs, she confessed to attempting suicide, following a nervous breakdown in 1979, she became a born- again christian. summer married her second husband, singer bruce sedano in 1980. they had two children and four grandchildren together. in 2009, summer performed at the nobel peace prize in norway, in honor of president obama. ♪ [ music ] she was said to be working on a new album in the weeks before passing away. teresa garcia, wjz eyewitness news. >> donna summer had 14 top-10 hits and sold hundreds of millions of albums, worldwide. new tragedy for the kennedy family. today, autopsy results reveal how robert f. kennedy jr.'s

second wife died. jessica kartalija is in the newsroom with the findings. >> reporter: kennedy died of asphyxiation after hanging herself. kennedy, 62, was found dead. she struggled with drugs and alcohol. charged in 2010, around the same time she and robert kennedy jr. separate. mary kennedy was an architect and designer. the couple had three teenaged children. she will be sorely missed. kai? >> reporter: jessica, thank you. her death is the latest in a second generation of kennedys, most recently, the death of kennedy's daughter cara nine months ago. converging on a small western town. the g-8 summit continues at camp david. hot topics on the agenda. wjz has complete coverage. mary bubala is live in thurmont

in frederick county, with more on the extraordinary security preparations. good afternoon, mary. >> good afternoon, kai. and good afternoon to everyone at home. thurmont, maryland, is the closingest town to camp david. -- closest town to camp david. this town and the people are used to the high-profile dignitaries coming to town. but not like this. not so many at one time. new security plans are in place, as the town braces for the start of the g-8 summit. >> reporter: thurmont, a small mountain town in maryland, just down the road from camp david, braces from world leaders, the staff and the press and the attention of the world to be in on them. >> i just don't want it to be out of hand. >> reporter: they have been planning for more than a month, assessing the threats from protestors and preparing the town. some businesses closed down altogether, while potential weapons have been removed. >> like trash cans, if they're

not chained down, they can use them as weapons to throw thru windows. which is unfortunate. we had the butterflies made by citizens. very decorative. and we liked it. but we had to take them down. ♪ [ music ] >> reporter: protestors are starting to show up. there is also expected a 30- mile no-fly zone already in effect above camp david. security is in place with a roadside camera, up and running. >> reporter: in an unprecedented move, the secret service ordered the complete shut down of the park which surrounds camp david. it was tighter security than what was the middle east peace summit in 2000. >> i think camp david will be the safest, most secure place on the planet. >> reporter: and contingency plans are in place in the event

of large-scale protests. but as you heard, at this point, local authorities just are not sure how many protestors will show up. live in thurmont, maryland, i'm mary bubala. back to you, kai, on tv hill. >> stay with wjz for complete coverage. as world leaders come to maryland for the g-8 summit. mary will be live tonight and tomorrow. vic carter reports from the white house. two responsible for the death of a 13-year-old girl are sentenced. nomay turnage died when they pulled the trigger. the 12-year-old boy who helped hide monae turnage's body in an alley will be monitored by juvenile services. the events connected to this case is ongoing. federal narcotics agents. today, two suspects arrested head to court.

weijia scraing is at the-- weijia jiang is at the circuit courthouse in towson. >> two men accused of running a massive pill mill in lutherville faced a judge thursday morning, who ordered they each be held on a $50,000 cash bond. the indictment named 51-year- old michael resnicov of new york, and 78-year-old gerald wiseberg of boca raton, florida, as owners and operators of the healthy life medical group. >> prescribing pills for nonmedical purposes. >> reporter: this reveals four undercover agents were prescribed pain pills but showed no symptoms of pain. and had no hands-on exams by doctors. they received six oxycodones. investigators say the clinic saw $130 a day. charged $300 to $350 in cash, which adds up to $9 million a year. >> i was worried that something bad was going to happen.

so we were just kind of relieved that nothing bad happened. and there were a lot of unsavory people hanging around. >> reporter: legitimate healthcare officials who worked nearby suspected a sketchy shop. though defense attorneys insist their clients did nothing wrong. >> i really don't want to say anything, other than he has absolutelyicated -- indicated to us -- absolutely indicated to us that he is going to plead not guilty. and that we'll fight with the state, as we always do. a third person has been named as the suspect. an arrest is pending. a new record setting at bwi marshall airport. during the first quarter this year, nearly 5 million passengers flew through bwi. that's an increase of 6%. and a new all-time record for the first quarter of any year. southwest airlines, the leading carrier of bwi served more or nearly 3 million people of those passengers. it's a beautiful day across maryland. the sun is out. and the humidity is gone. wjz has weather and traffic

together. meteorologist tim williams is here with the updated numbers from first warning weather. hi, tim. >> hello, kai. good afternoon, everyone. it's a very nice day, with dry conditions, blue sky, low humidity. it's just a really nice evening for this time in may. our average high now is 74. we're currently sitting at 74 degrees. 29% relative humidity. calm winds. and all disturbances that we have on the radar are to our south. the front, responsible for rain earlier in the week now is offshore. and we're expecting the disturbance is down to the south, going to ride along that front. now, they are down there close enough that we do have to keep an eye on them, heading into the weekend. but for the foreseeable future, looks like things stay nice. we'll talk about how this plays out in your week. >> let's check on the roads with kristy breslin at wjz traffic control. hi, kristy. >> hi, kai. hi, everyone. definitely not a good start in the jones falls expressway in that northbound direction. we have an accident there at 28th street, involving a bus, as you can see, traffic is really backed up.

it's 74 degrees and sunny in central maryland right now. a biologist in north carolina is recovering after getting attacked by an angry alligator. this is tough to watch, folks. while trying to wragle the reptile. the gator lashes out, grabs the man by the arm, even takes a snap at his leg. the biologist was trying to remove the 10-foot gator from a residential area. it was eventually captured and then released back into the wild. the biologist was treated at a local hospital and released. wow. the jury returns a verdict in the trial of an exhouston police officer, accused of beating a teenage robbery suspect. doug miller has more on the emotional reaction from the courthouse.

>> reporter: just moments after the verdict was announced. >> we know what happens with an all-white jury. >> this is absolutely atrocious. it is absolutely pathetic. it is the greatest miscarriage of justice we've ever seen. >> reporter: they complained not just about the verdict but also the jury, all six of the jurors in this misdemeanor trial, were white. >> they just did to black -- said to black people that blis can do whatever they want to do and get away with it. they sent a message to us that all of us and our lives don't mean a damn thing. >> the jurors did not speak afterward. the defense argued that blomberg kicked holly's arms to help other officers handcuff him. >> this is not a racial thing. it is not and was not a racial thing. it's been made into that by others for their own reasons. >> reporter: after the verdict, amid the crush of cameras,

blomberg was visibly emotional. >> i just want to thank everybody that supported me throughout this. it's been a long ordeal. this is the only thing i've ever wanted to do in my entire life. and i'm just glad court is finally over. >> reporter: he might have gone to prison for up to a year. andrew blomberg is no longer a police officer, but he is a free man. >> blomberg could still work in law enforcement, but the mayor and police chief say, not as a houston police officer. another rocky day on wall street. [ stock bells ringing ] more concerns flagged the markets down. the dow was down 156 points. s&p off 20. the nasdaq down 60. let's go to new york, where alexis christoforous has tonight's cbs money watch update. if you're planning on buying a home or looking to refinance, now may be the time. mortgage rates have hit another record low. freddie mac says the rate on a 30-year loan dipped to 3.79%. while the 15 fell at .04%.

some lenders have made it tougher to qualify for a loan. claims for unemployment benefits were unchanged last week at 370,000. it's a sign layoffs are not increasing. but experts say it also suggests the job market recovery remains painfully slow. verizon is dumping its long- time data plan. it dumped its $30 a month for new customers but lets current subscribers use them. now, all new subscribers will use a tiered data share plan. delta says it has since fixed a problem. and customers who believe they were overcharged should contact the airline. the carrier is also trimming its flight schedule. 4% this year. it's trying to back out of less profitable international roots. and that's your money watch.

8 summit. president obama said in a statement, transferring the g-8 summit from chicago to here, thurmont, maryland, to camp david, that he thought the weather would be nice this time of year. well, he got lucky. because it's beautiful weather today. beautiful weather tomorrow. let's head in to bob turk. and he can actually put the seal of approval on that. >> sounds good. we will definitely put that on. we're looking at a nice forecast. we have gorgeous conditions. and the sun is going to continue on shine right on through the end of the week. 40 saturday dew point. relative humidity at 29%. calm winds and 30.07 is the barometer reading. 66 in oakland to 63 in ocean city. they are some of the lower readings on the map. and let me get into the readings. 72 in westminster and bel air. and 71 in annapolis and on kent

island. winds have been calm around the state for most of the day. we did start off the day with a pretty breezy morning. and winds from the northeast. high pressure to the north. and it is the position around that high that has been bringing in that northeast flow, down around the water. and just coming in along the coastline. it is also responsible for some of the cooler temperatures you see, just negotiate of us, from detroit up to boston and even up into nova scotia. but all of the warmer temperatures are just down to our south. and we're really going to be tapping into more of that as that high starts to sink down and closer to us, as it starts to move down to our south. right now, to our south, we have storms and some rain that has been down just along the coastline of north carolina. and florida. the front responsible for the rain we had over the early part of the week, is going to work as a buffer for that. at least early on. it is not until late in the weekend or beginning of the week that we expected that system could track up. and combine with a warm front moving from the west, to bring

us substantial rain monday into tuesday. what we're going to keep an eye on, though, is how close that system stays toward our coastline, toward the delmarva, as it moves on away. you can see these blinds, showing that the winds will be picking up offshore. could be small craft advisories in effect. we don't expect that that is going to impact us, as far as rain going into preakness saturday. we're going to keep a close eye on saturday. could see showers to the south and east of the metro area. east wind on the bay. 5 to 10 knots. no advisories currently. 5:56 in the morning is your sunset time. or sunrise time. doesn't set at 5:16 in the morning. 77 degrees is our forecast. going down into the 50s. it will be pleasant today, moving into saturday. looks like a nice weekend shaping up. >> we look forward to that. don't miss the prime time lineup at 10:00. it's the season finale of the mentalist. then stay tuned for eyewitness

now have to decide whether the former presidential candidate used campaign funds to hide an affair. john edwards came to court to hear closing arguments. prosecutors claim the former presidential candidate broke campaign finance laws to cover up his affair with mistress hunter. but abbey lowell said the governor will always try to turn an affair into a crime. he said the senator is guilty of a sin, not a felony and for that he's going to pay a life sentence. the prosecution witness said they could shame bonnie and clyde. >> if the jury absolutely does not believe andrew young then they could make that resolution quickly. and that destroys the case. >> reporter: in his case, he said edwards' affair sewed the seeds of destruction. he said that edwards knew the rules of campaign finance laws. and that edwards would, quote,

seeing some dignitaries. but not on this scale. not all of these leaders at once. you know that president obama changed the venue from the g-8 summit from chicago to camp david, which is the presidential retreat. it officially gets under way tomorrow. world leaders, we are told, are starting to make their way here. some will arrive tonight. most tomorrow. thurmont, maryland, as you know, is the closest town to camp david. it's preparing for an influx of visitors and protestors. >> basically, for the past seven weeks, plan for this. i've got my entire agency, either activated or on standby. we brought in agencies from out of this jurisdiction to help, if necessary. i feel we're very prepared. >> reporter: and already, the state parks that surround camp david, have been closed off. we drove up there. it is such a beautiful part of maryland. but it is really starting to get all sealed off as they prepare for the first world leaders to come tonight. and most will come tomorrow.

brook burke to sell itself. >> i'm toning my muscles, strengtszenning my core, burning my calories. >> reporter: these ads for shapeups fueled millions in sales. but the federal trade commission decided the maker, skechers, inc., was deceiving consumers with false advertising, saying there is no proof the shoe would help shape muscles or shed pounds. the company settled for $50 million, despite the belief of the company's ceo that they did nothing wrong. >> i absolutely don't believe skechers misled consumers in any way. >> reporter: in a statement, skechers agreed to release all prior claims related to health fitness or weight loss. >> we didn't want to battle this for years to come. and we wanted to get back to what we do best, which is make good shoes. >> reporter: the company's selling point was the sole.

a curved design that skechers claimed would force the wearer to shape up with every step. >> it was certainly a stretch to think that it's going to produce a tangible result. or noticeable result. >> reporter: now, skechers is barred from making any future claims about its products, unless they can prove them. well, coffee drinkers are living longer, than those who choose to skip a cup of joe. kai is in the newsroom with a surprising study. regular or decaf apparently doesn't matter. because coffee in general can increase your life span. that's, at least, according to a new study that followed 400,000 participants. researchers found that compared to those who drank no coffee, men who drank 2 or 3 cups were 10% less likely to die from an early age. >> i like this study. thank you, kai. study was done by the national institutes of health and aarp and is published in the new england journal of medicine.

the sun is shining on this beautiful thursday. taking a live look outside. there are very few clouds. and it's just about perfect. i mean, perfect. will the sun stay out all weekend? wjz has weather and traffic together. bob is here with the updated numbers from first warning weather. let's take a look at radar. there's showers to the south of us. the front that came through yesterday, with a cooler, dryer air that's in today. stuck across the southern portions of the carolinas. looks like it's going to stay there for a while. but low pressure is expected to develop. eventually may bring us clouds by let's say sunday night or monday. right now, weekend is looking great. in fact, the preakness forecast, 80 degrees. sunshine. wear the sun screen. southeast winds, very light at 40. looks like it's going to be just a perfect start to the weekend. including tomorrow. denise? >> thank you, bob. let's check on the roads right now with kristy breslin at wjz traffic control. hello, kristy. the beltway at this point is just a mess.

more violence erupts in syria today. heavy shelling rocked the town of roston in holmes. rebel fighters who are still holding out against the government say the cease-fire established in march is being violated daily. more than 12,000 people have died since the syrian uprising began just 14 months ago. well, more than 100 people were hauled away in handcuffs, during a violent student protest in montral. thousands took to the street after an emergency law to suspend classes in august.

it's a bid to restore order, after months of protests over tuition hikes. demonstrators hurled objects at police. new video is released of the man convicted of killing three members of singer jennifer hudson's family. jessica kartalija is in the newsroom with a look at the footage and what it reveals. >> reporter: denise, the video shows police interrogating william balfour's former brother-in-law. [ indiscernible ] dea somewhere? you're going to have a problem. >> i'm not going to have a problem. just what i tell you. >> the interrogation took place back in october 2008. the day the bodies of hudson's mother and brother were found shot to death in the chicago family home. at the time of questioning, hudson's 7-year-old nephew was missing. the boy's body was found three days later.

jurors say discrepancies in balfour's alibi were found, making it a key piece of evidence in their deliberations upon. >> balfour was convicted of three counts of murder. a woman in california is rushed to the hospital after her shorts suddenly burst into flames. juan fernandez reports, she had just put some rocks into her pocket during a walk on the beach. >> reporter: a 43-year-old mother and her children were walking along the shoreline at san onofre state beach, when one of her kids picked up these rocks. one, speckled green. the other, orange and black. she put them in her pocket and went home. hours later, the rocks caught fire, burning the mother and her husband, who tried helping her. >> according to witnesses s -- she actually had flames coming off of her shorts. so we are still unsure of what caused the actual fire. we know the rocks were in her pocket. the rocks are being tested as we speak, with the orange county health care agency.

>> reporter: the san clemente family has still not returned home. according to a neighbor, hazardous cleanup crew was in the house yesterday. he tells me, instruments were picking up really high readings. and until they get this, the family can't come home. >> i responded to the paramedic that responded to the call. he's 27 years on the job in the beach area, he's never seen anything like it. >> reporter: the rocks may look normal. but believe it or not, these highly flammable rocks may occur naturally, most likely containing or coating white foss forrous, a highly flammable material. a small spark or friction can cause them to burn like a road flare. >> the 43-year-old woman remains hospitalized. she has third-degree burns to her right thigh and knee. strong winds and fires. the gladiator fire is still burning this afternoon. officials say homes could burn in the next few days. the fire has so far scorched

orch 5400 acres. and is currently only 5% contained. a small house fire leads to a million-dollar drug bust in philadelphia. police found at least 100 marijuana plants, valued at about $10,000 each, after a fire broke out inside this row home. the owner managed to escape. but investigators say he left behind, lamps, fertilizer, and other high-tech equipment for the operation. a dramatic rescue off the coast of santa barbara, after a horse swims more than 2 1/2 miles out to sea. as melissa mccarty reports, the horse got spooked during a photo shoot on the beach. >> it was a daring rescue to save an arabian show horse lost at sea. >> that's one rescue i've never attempted in my career. >> reporter: william, a 7-year- old shoafer horse was the -- showhorse was the star in santa barbara tuesday. these photos, provided by april visesle showed what happened when high tide spooked william. he bolted into the ocean.

even as people swam after him, trying to pull him back to shore, william, too fast for anyone to catch, ended up nearly 3 miles out. >> it's like finding a needle in a haystack. it was just barely the horse's nose and eyes above water. >> reporter: william was exhausted. treading water for more than an hour. >> had to be a pretty healthy horse. because that water is cold. >> reporter: with luck and skill, he was spotted. a charter boat captain captured this video and assisted rescue. >> just keep your neck above water. and keep the legs from hitting the propellers. that was the trick. >> reporter: with a handful of rescue boats on standby, these three men tried to balance the horse's weight in big swells. >> rig up sort of a harness that we placed underneath the animal's animal's saddle. and we were able to kind of latch it onto the side of the boat. >> reporter: his panic left rescuers. >> just keeping calm and going really slow. >> reporter: three hours later, near shore, william was

transferred to rescuers on poodle paddle boards and pulled in -- paddle boards and pulled in and welcomed back with loverring hands. >> reporter: william actually belongs to famed producer john peters, known for batman, caddy shack, the color purple. he's doing well, recovering at an animal hospital. michigan police are looking for the men who carjacked pastor and gospel singer marvin winans. the 57-year-old was jumped in broad daylight by at least four men. winans was pushed to the ground and kicked. the robbers tore his pants trying to get his wallet from his pocket. they also took his gold and diamond rolex watch. and his 2012 lexus suv. winans suffered several cuts and bruises to his face, hands and arms. a senior prank ends with dozens of suspensions in indiana. it started tuesday, when six students plastered the hallways at cascade highway, with thousands of sticky notes. they were suspended and a janitor was fired am then just

we have breaking news from east baltimore right now. let's go to sky eye chopper 13. mike her -- perry. >> that was the initial call. apparently a man was struck by a car, northbound erdmann avenue, south of sinclaire lane. it appears the individual was down in the median. he was being assisted by baltimore police. paramedics just arrived to the scene a few moments ago. there is a significant damage to the car. but the man has been lying prone since we arrived on the scene. there's no word on how serious injuries are. as you can see, police have one lane, the left lane of northbound erdmann avenue, at sinclaire blocked as they continue their investigation. >> thank you, captain mike perry, live in sky eye chopper 13. absolutely spectacular day,

memphis at 87. we've really got this nice air mass. 66, detroit. 82, atlanta. right along the east coast is just perfect. except to our south and east, where a front has stalled out. and shower activity is beginning to develop over the carolinas. you can see it spinning down there. it should stay down there until maybe sunday night or monday. we'll see clouds. but you see the cloud line, just south of the region, over the lower eastern shore. the lower bay. that's where the clouds are. and looks like it may just stay there. north of that, not a cloud in sight. from basically, let's say, cambridge north and west. it's just perfect. so for the next couple of days in our region, high pressure. pleasant conditions. beautiful. looks like that low is going to go offshore. taking most of the clouds and rain with it. but right along that coast, it may stay cloudy, at least for a couple more days. down there, looks like not quite as nice as the baltimore region. east winds, 5 to 10 knots. bay temp around 66 tonight. clear, perfect, cool.
