the world of music and fans are remembering her. >> reporter: donna summer was an icon. the world of music. a superstar whose big voice and megahits defined the era known as disco. she died thursday morning at the age of 63, reportedly from lung cancer at her naples, florida home. the family released a statement saying they are "at peace, celebrating her extraordinary life and continued legacy." she was born ladonna adrian gaines in boston massachusetts in 1948. she sang in the choir and formed several groups. her breakout hit, love to love you, baby, became a disco classic. >> reporter: randy remembers meeting her when he was a dj in boston. >> very nice, very humble. that's what struck me

about her. she seemed grateful for all the success that she was starting to achieve. >> reporter: summer won five grammies for iconic hits like last dance, hot stuff, and bad girls. her songs defined the dance music era of the 1970s. >> her songs were pop songs and they had staying power for the day. >> reporter: cbs radio's 101.9, fans were anxiety to talk about -- anxious to talk about her music. >> did you get into her music? >> i remember roller skating to her songs in a rink. >> reporter: at the height of her career, she admitted that she suffered from depression and at one point tried to commit suicide. but tonight, family and friends are remembering her triumphs. >> donna summer had 19 no.

1 dance hit, second only to madonna. powerful leaders from all over the world are here in maryland, taking up critical international issue, such as the war on terror, as they meet in secret in a small western maryland town. >> reporter: thurmont, this small town in maryland, just down the road from camp david, braces for world leader, the staff, the press, and the attention of the world to be focused on them. >> i don't want it to get out of hand. >> reporter: they have been planning for more than a month, assessing the threats from protestors and preparing the town. some businesses closed down all together. potential weapons have been removed. >> trashes can, if they're not chained down, they could use them as weapons to throw through windows. we had the butterflies made by citizens here in town,

very decorative, but we had to take them down. >> reporter: protestors are starting to show up with both occupy baltimore and frederick expected. there is a 30-mile no-fly zone in effect above camp david. and security is in place with a roadside camera up and running. the secret service ordered the shutdown of cunningham falls in the mountain park which surrounds camp david. it is tighter security than what was in place for the middle east peace summit in 2000. >> i think it's going to be the most secure place in the world this weekend. my concern is the other 644 square miles. >> reporter: contingency plans are in place if there are largescale protests. but at this point, authorities aren't sure how many protestors are

convenience store captured trayvon martin buying candy and an iced tea just 20 minutes before he was shot to death. the video is just part of evidence files released by florida prosecutors. also included, crime scene photos showing a bullet casing in the grass. and this one of zimmerman's 9-millimeter gun and holster. they are photos of zimmerman taken just after the shooting, showing what appears to be a broken nose, and bloody cuts on the back of his head. the autopsy report on trayvon martin shows the gunshot wound in his chest. the burns suggest that the two men were no more than 18 inches apart. the report also details a bruise on martin's eye and small scars on both hands, suggesting he had been in a fight. there are details about witnesses. one said he saw a black male wearing a dark hoodie on top of a hispanic male yelling for help.

then the pop of a gunshot. a police report said the confrontation -- was ultimately avodable if zim -- avoidable, if zimmerman had stayed in his vehicle and awaited law enforcement. toxicology reports show there were traces of marijuana in martin's system. he was serving a two-week drug suspension from school when he was killed. from a harvard dorm room to wall street. facebook is just hours away from going public. the popular website will start selling stock tomorrow morning for $38 a share. it is the largest ever tech ipo. it will net mark zuckerberg more than $1 billion. laser pointers shined into the eyes of pilots in the air. an investigation brought the problem to light in maryland,

and megan is live with a new warning. >> reporter: the u.s. transportation secretary is sending a message. anyone that endangers pilots with laser pointers will face serious consequences. a blinding light splinters across the cockpit. >> it can cause blindness, dazzle effect. >> reporter: someone on the ground targeting pilots with laser pointer, causing near tragedy. >> i wonder how stupid people really can be. i wonder if people really understand that when they shine a laser in the eye of a pilot, they could cause great harm. >> reporter: the number of dangerous cases is on the rise nationwide. in 2010, 2,800 incidents were reported. last year, it skyrocketed to more than 3,500 reports. state police helicopters also in the line of fire.

>> our pilots' lives are put at risk. it can blind them for a moment. >> reporter: an investigation uncovered last year eight state police pilotses were targeted. >> we could have lost the whole aircraft in a different situation. >> people are going to be not only apprehended and arrested, but they're going to be prosecuted. >> reporter: they can also face civil penalties. $11,000 for one strike. the highest proposed penalty for multiple strike, more than $30,000. >> reporter: nationwide, 28 people have been charged in laser incidents in just the past year. of and the faa is investigating dozens more. state and local prosecutors have sentenced offenders, some of those cases included jail

clear, 56 degrees in central maryland. the forecast is coming up. [ crowd noise ] >> chaos in one louisville neighborhood. two shootings. two people were quill ed in the initial shooting -- killed in the initial shooting, and during the investigation, more gun fire broke out. one woman killed another during an argument. there appears to be no connection between the two incidents however. a dangerous moment for a firefighter in gone is caught on camera. it happened while they were on the roof battling a condominium fire. watch the highlighted area, and you can see him fall through. now, fortunately he was able to crawl out. he was not injured. however, two other firefighter s suffered burns and heat exhaustion. they're all expected to recover.

jury deliberations are set to begin tomorrow in the john edwards corruption trial. during closing argument, prosecutors recounted the former candidate's extra marital affair. he is accused of using campaign money to hide the affair. a prison inmate in louisiana escapes, even though he was only serving a seven-day sentence for shoplifting. dwayne young was recaptured three hours after he fled from a work detail. he says he did it because his girlfriend was planning to have an abortion. >> i felt like i was going to get caught up in it, so i might as well just have to do the time now. >> the search for young brought to light that he was serving this sentence under a false name. police say he was hiding an extensive record. a workplace accident at an arby's in michigan leaves part of a finger in a sandwich.

a female employee cut herself on a meat slicer. the fleshy pad of her finger ended up inside a roast beef sandwich, and it was served to a customer. arby's apologized to the customer and is investigating. an unusual and amazing rescue off the california coast. a horse gets spooked during a photo shoot and swims 2.5 miles out to sea. jessica has the struggle to save the horse. >> reporter: a daring rescue to may have been an arab began show horse lost at sea. >> that's one rescue i've never attempted in my career. >> reporter: william was the star of a photography workshop along the sands of a beach in santa barbara county tuesday. high tides spooked up, and he bolted into the ocean. as people swam after, william, too

fast for anyone to catch, ended up 3 miles out. >> it was like finding a needle in a haystack. just barely the horse's nose and eyes above the water. >> reporter: william looks exhausted, treading water for more than wan hour. >> he had had been to be a pretty healthy horse. >> reporter: captain paul norry captured this video and helped with the rescue. three men tried to balance the horse's weight in large swells. >> we brought out a harness that we placed underneath the animal's saddle and we were able to latch it on the side of the boat. >> reporter: his rescuers had to idle back. >> just keep him calm and going really slow. >> reporter: three hours later, william was brought to shore. he was returned to his owner safely. >> it's a story i'll have the for the rest of my life. >> reporter: william belongs to the producer of caddie shack, the color purple, and batman.

particularly along the coastal area. there is an area of low pressure expected to develop somewhere around the south carolina border area. right now, it looks like it's going to move basically off-shore. now, there may be clouds, a few showers in ocean city by sunday. we might see a few higher clouds. the next weather maker is a front off to the north and west that may bring us some clouds and a shower or thunder shower chance wednesday or tuesday. but it looks like cool pleasant days, sunshine, warming up in the afternoon. may get to 80 degrees and mainly sunny. we'll talk about beautiful weather. that low pressure, there it is, moving off-shore. all the models have are it over shower by late saturday. don't think it's going to influence our weather that much. maybe earlier next week we'll see some showers as the winds become more east northeast.
