facebook frenzy. did the massive public offering of the popular social networking site live up to the hype? >> hi. i'm kai jackson. here's what people are talking about. it's facebook's big day. the site born in a dorm room eight years ago is making the most talked about stock market debut in years. ed lawrence reports for wjz in menlo park, california. >> reporter: facebook's headquarters looked like a party on the day it went public. after an hour and a half delay, more than 80 million shares traded in the first minute. the price moved higher, before sething -- settling back down near the $38 listing price. earlier, mark zuckerberg rang the opening bell from california. >> i want to say to all of the people out there who use

facebook and our product, thank you. >> reporter: the social networking site is worth $100 million, making it the most valuable company to ever go public. but zuckerberg says that is not the goal. >> our mission is to remain open and connected. >> reporter: the idea came from a harvard dorm room to a network with 900 million users. but now it has to turn a profit for investors. >> this is something that now gives facebook the ability to do larger expansions. >> reporter: thanks to this, zuckerberg now has a net worth of $20 million. and now, many here are million areas. -- millon airs-- millionaires as much as they clearly have a bright future. >> i'm not going to buy. i think it's a little overpriced. >> reporter: nasdaq officials presented mark zuckerberg with his first hoody. in menlo park, wjz eyewitness

news. >> the euphoria of facebook did not carry over to the markets. in fact, this is wall wall street's worst week of the year. all of the markets are down again today. a victory today for same- sex couples in maryland. maryland's court of appeals rules they can divorce in the state, even though maryland does not yet allow same-sex marriage. the case involved two women, married in california, and denied a divorce in 2012 by a maryland judge. opponents of the law are trying to overturn it in a potential voter referendum in november. some of the most powerful leaders in the world are in western maryland for the g-8 summit. the meeting at camp david, frederick county, will focus on europe's debt crisis and the war in afghanistan. wjz is live. mare but bal -- mary bubala is live with the leaders and the very tight security in place. good afternoon, mary. >> reporter: good afternoon, kai. and good afternoon to everybody at home.

many of these g-8 leaders first flew in to dulles airport and made their way here to camp david, aboard chinook helicopters, none of the leaders really taking the roads in and out. but there certainly were a few protestors who tried to get their attention. >> reporter: the most powerful leaders in the world are now in one of the most secure and secluded places on earth. camp david. roads leading into the historical presidential retreat are shut down. and others are on lockdown. a no-fly zone with a 30-mile radius over western maryland is in place, with fighter jets ready to respond to any threat. in the past, g-8 summits have seen violent clashes on the streets. but not on this one. >> reporter: since they can't occupy camp david, protestors were supposed to occupy the small town of thurmont. but so far, not many have shown up. >> what is your message to the g-8 leaders who are in the

mountain above you here. >> we would love for them to show some compassion in every decision that they make today, and take into consideration the faces of humanity. >> reporter: instead of camping out in rural maryland, bus loads of protestors are arriving in chicago for the nato summit, which will draw the g-8 leaders and dozens starting sunday. the g-8 represents the most powerful economies in the world. france, germany, japan, among the elite here. >> we are facing thermo nuclear war. that's russia's prime minister's war. >> reporter: leading protestors, even in small numbers to the site of the summit. >> we're from the not going to violate anybody's first amendment right. and i hope they don't violate our right to preserve peace and order. >> reporter: and the town of thurmont does have special security plans in place. but so far, they have not had to activate them. thurmont and frederick county all canceled their schools today, just as a precaution. again, they didn't know how many people were going to be coming in and out or occupying their towns. live in thurmont, i'm mary

bubala, wjz eyewitness news. kai, back to you. >> mary, i'm sure the children weren't too disappointed about that. >> reporter: right. >> stay with complete coverage from the g8 summit in maryland. mary will bring you reports at 5:00 and 6:00. and vic will have a report from the white house. new evidence is released in the shooting death of florida teen trayvon martin. no eyewitness saw the shot. but an unidentified witness said he saw george zimmerman beating martin. and then the one guy on top, in the black hoody, was just pretty much throwing down blows on the guy, kind of mma style. like a ground and pound on the concrete at this point. >> reporter: in this surveillance video, trayvon martin had 20 minutes yet to live. he leaves this convenience store with skittles and a can of iced tea and heads to a fatal confrontation with george zimmerman, a neighborhood crime watch captain. zimmerman is now facing second- degree murder charges.

trevon marttrayvon martin's mother sabrina will be in fullerton this sunday. she accepted an invitation to go to the church. she will speak there. we'll will bring you more information. murders, triple shootings and now mass arrests. it's one of the largest roundups of suspects in recent years. drugs and revenge hits allegedly fuel this violence. >> reporter: a year-long cycle of violence began in 2011, when dorian kest was stabbed to death. the very next day, sky eye chopper 13 was over the scene of a triple shooting. alex vennable was murdered. two others wounded. federal and law enforcement agency say over the next month, revenge shootings claim one more life and four more shootings. >> reporter: a shooting occurs here at spawns, another shooting here. and in fact, one victim, even allegedly was shot twice, as part of this cycle of

retaliation. >> reporter: a cycle, police allege, with three people at its center. robert moore, his wife, sarah hooker, and hooker's brother, donny adams, all charged with murder. another five suspects were also arrested on murder and attempted murder charges. here's how. >> surveillance, court-ordered wire taps, witness interviews, both in and outside of the grand jury. forensic work. cell phone tower tracking. and other investigative tools. >> reporter: charges also extend to seized cocaine. not in the amount seen here. but 5 kilos worth, which also brought six more arrests for a total of 14. >> reporter: according law enforcement, this will mean a crackdown. >> this law enforcement team is focused and dedicated to make an impact here in the city of baltimore. and you're seeing it today and you'll see it in the future. >> reporter: alex demetrick, wjz eyewitness news. >> reporter: agencies involved

in the mass arrests were baltimore city police, the states and u.s. attorney's office, and the dea. one of the most vocal and respected members of baltimore's black clergy is being remembered. reverend marian baskan has passed away. reverend baskettan was a civil rights pioneer. and was a pastor for more than 40 years. he was also the first black fireman in baltimore. the fire house on liberty heights is named in his honor. he is survived by a wife, son and three daughters. he was 87 years old. store will reopen in october at the very same location it occupied four years ago. the store left the mall in 2008, just before it filed for bankruptcy. the new boscovs is part of the mall's plans to refresh the mall with new upgrades in tenants. another day of perfect weather. there's hardly a cloud in the sky. and the temperature is right on the money this friday afternoon. wjz has weather and traffic

it's sunny and 74 degrees in central maryland. the complete first warning weather forecast coming up. two florida a&m band university members admit to beating an 18-year-old girl during a hazing ritual. the two men pled guilty to beating ria hunter; it's a group of band members from georgia. hunter had to go to the hospital for her injuries. one of the men is also among the 13 students already charged in the beating death of drum major robert champion. a boston university student is charged in a crash that killed three of his classmates in new zealand. 23-year-old steven houseman is accused of careless driving. he was behind the wheel last

weekend with a group of students studying abroad, when that crash occurred on a rural highway. three students died. another remains in critical condition. houseman will remain in jail until his next court appearance, which is next month. in today's healthwatch, several states around the nation are reporting cases of whooping cough. teresa garcia reports for wjz. the centers for disease control wants to get the word out that vaccination is the best way to prevent the disease. [ coughing ] >> reporter: the centers for disease control says whooping cough is making a comeback. so far this year, there have been 9,000 cases in the u.s. that's a 50% increase from last year. health departments in new york, pennsylvania, illinois, minnesota, texas, arizona, and colorado, are reporting hundreds of cases. wisconsin and washington have more than 1,000 each. >> they're seeing rates of disease that are higher than what they've seen in close to 50 years. >> reporter: whooping cough is

a highly contagious bacterial infection that triggers violent, uncontrollable coughing, making it hard to breathe. the disease usually affects young children, who haven't completed their full course of vaccinations. and teens and adults who lose immunity as they get older. >> reporter: california had a severe outbreak in 2010. but thanks to increased awareness and vaccinations, there were no deaths here last year. >> it's really important for all adolescents and adults to get their booster. and we're also encouraging young ones to get vaccinated. >> seattle mom heidi brook did not get a booster. she caught whooping cough and gave it to her 2-week-old daughter caroline. >> my heart just sank. and i said, oh, my gosh, it was me. and i had inadvertently given my newborn a potentially fatal disease. >> reporter: they both

welcome back to wjz eyewitness news. i'm mary bubala, reporting live in thurmont, maryland, frederick county. the site of the g-8 summit in camp david. you know, for any big event you want the weather to cooperate. and boy, did president obama get lucky. we're hearing some helicopters above us. it could be that some are arriving for the g-8 summit. they will meet for a dinner

here tonight. perhaps they could dine outside. it is just spectacular, gorgeous weather. we're going to go to our weather center, where tim williams is. and tim, the folks in thurmont say it's always nice here. i think it's probably nice in the spring and the summer. >> well, maybe we know where to move when we retire, mary. >> that's it. it's beautiful here. >> beautiful thurmont. thank you so much. mary bubala, reporting from the g-8 summit, on this wonderful friday afternoon. we'll call it preakness eve. here in baltimore. right down from old hilltop. and the forecast is going to be gorgeous as it will be for everyone. right now, we're at 74 degrees. temperatures in the 70s, with very dry air out there. 44, the dew point. relative humidity, at 34%. the wind from the east/northeast is around high pressure. it's just up to the north. it's that flow around the high, bringing in air off the cooler waters. we'll show you that here in a second. high pressure taking the barometer up over 30 now. 30.14 is the reading. around the state, temperatures are all in the 70s, except for down closest to the water's

edge. 65 in ocean city. 79 in cumberland. 76 in westminster. 73 in bel air. 74, the magic number from columbia, to annapolis to kent island. and over to rock hall. right now, the winds are coming from the northeast. this is bringing a comfortable, cool air mass over the state. had those winds shifted to the south and southwest. our temperatures will be soaring. and that's because temperatures down in our region to our neighbor -- with our neighbors to the south, are in those 80- degree ranges. we're looking at 89 in memphis. 80 in atlanta. but we're getting that flow off the water. we'll be getting a shift of the winds in the west and the southwest over the next day or so. what that's going to mean is that the high pressure to the negotiate is going to eventually start to sink. it is that clockwise flow bringing us -- bringing us this wind from the north and northeast. but as the high starts to move away, the flow changes. and it will start to bring in more warm air around from the south. our temperatures are going to go up into the 80-degree range over the next few days.

in the democratic party, will have to wait a little longer to learn his fate. >> reporter: for four weeks, john edwards filed into a north carolina courthouse every morning and heard his fall from grace recounted by witness after witness. he would never take the stand in his own defense. edwards is charged with six counts of receiving illegal campaign contributions. conspiracy and falsifying documents. prosecutors say the former u.s. senator knowingly and willingly violated campaign finance laws during his 2008 presidential bid by using campaign donations to hide his mistress, rielle hunter's pregnancy. >> a issue -- big issue here is whether john edwards had criminal intent. if the chief financial officer did not view these as campaign contributions, a clear inference would be that john edwards would have no reason to either. >> a former aide is said to have used much of the money for his own gain while he was in

charge of paying for hunter's living and medical expenses. the defense maintains that the money was never intended for cam -- edwards' campaign. edwards has always maintained his innocence. >> i did not break the law. and i never, ever thought that i was breaking the law. >> reporter: at times, the testimony was too much for edwards' daughter cate, and she left the courtroom in tears. >> cate is a real victim in all of this. she lost her brother when he was young. she lost her mom to cancer. her dad is one of the most reviled men right now, and there she is behind him. >> reporter: neither the prosecution nor the defense called hunter, the woman at the center of edwards' political demise. if convicted, edwards faces up to 30 years in prison and a $1.5 million fine. i'm elizabeth coridon reporting. >> reporter: after about two hours of deliberations, the jury asked to see several

exhibits. they will resume deliberations monday. robert f. kennedy, jr., is speaking out about his estranged wife's suicide. mary kennedy, who took her life wednesday, by hanging herself, had balted depression for years, according to robert. in a statement, he said, quote, she was in a lot of agony for a lot of her life. friends say she was in deep debt and feared robert kennedy was gain custody of their children. the funeral is scheduled for saturday. world leaders arriving at the g-8 summit. mary is live. wjz and mary bubala are live in the small town of thurmont, where all of the world's attention will be focused this weekend. mary? >> reporter: that's right, denise. at the top of the hour, i heard some helicopters above me what i was talking with kai. i got a chance to look at them. and they were chinook helicopters leaving. and that means many of the g-8

leaders, if not all of them are are -- are at camp david. they clearly are used to having high-profile visitors, but not this many at one time. >> and you can't get this close to camp david. so we've kind of become the attraction. many of them prepare for the worst but hope for the best. and that's the same with security here. a lot of the locals approach this with a healthy dose of curiosity. >> it's a beautiful little town of 6,000 people. >> reporter: for many in thurmont, the protestors and reporters from around the world covering them are the attraction. >> it's not bad. it's quiet and everything like that. >> it provides a little excitement? >> yes. >> reporter: a spectacle in a town a few hundred feet below the retreat. but also a world away. >> when i was a marine at camp david, under the rage know -- reagan and bush administrations. but it's surrounded by woods.

>> it's serene, quiet. the president can take a stroll, knowing the marines and air force and everyone up there is guarding him and he can relax. >> we live up here in camp david on the mountain. when the president is up there, we'll see helicopters flying everywhere. >> reporter: along with the excitement, there's also some frustration here. >> put our kids' life at risk. plus, i have my pit bull with me. he's fine. he'll protect me. >> reporter: but there are signs of a warm welcome. it's hard to find a place not decked out in red, white and blue. it's the american way. >> people in town are pretty much amused, for the most part. because we live it. camp david is just over the hill from us. so we see the president coming and going. we see dignitaries coming and going. it's really not anything we don't see on a daily basis. >> reporter: and at times, it seemed like there were more police than protestors. the local government still hasn't been reimbursed from the federal government for all of the security costs. but mary, we have seen so many

>> yeah. like a ground and pound on the concrete at this point. >> reporter: this surveillance video shows martin just 20 minutes before his confrontation with zimmerman. zimmerman, a neighborhood crime watch captain is facing second- degree charges. police in mississippi make a connection with two fatal highway shootings. >> reporter: 28-year-old james willy will be formally charged with two forms of capital murder. he's accused of shooting two people at separate times along desolate stretches of the highway last week. police found a 9-mill matter handgun -- 9-millimeter handgun on him. ballistics testing later found it was the same gun used in the highway shootings. he was arrested after a woman claims he raped her. he's now facing charges of kidnapping, aggravated assault and rape. >> reporter: investigators thought he may have been posingas a police officer. but now they say it's not the case. a woman in georgia,

battling a flesh-eating bacteria, may lose more limbs. doctors have recommended that 23-year-old amy copeland amputate both hands and her foot. the flesh-eating bacteria entered a wound on her leg when she had a zip lining accident. when they told her to amputate both arms and a leg, she reportedly mouthed the words, let's do this. lisa sylvester reports, the west coast is bracing for what could be a major threat with tons of debris, heading directly their way. >> reporter: billion tons of tsunami debris, moving across the pacific ocean, just starting to reach the west coast of north america. recently, this harley-davidson motorcycle washed up on a remote canadian island. thousands of pieces of plastic, styrofoam, and household goods are expected to make landfall, starting next year. nick malice says the items are

not radioactive, but still pose a danger to marine life. >> we know it harms marine mammals. and we know it has an impact to coastal economies. so we can't predict the future, in terms of exactly where this debris is going to end up. but we certainly can make sure that we prepare for it. >> reporter: this animation from noaa, the national oceanic atmospheric administration shows a path of debris as it moves across the northern pacific. noaa is the lead agency for the cleanup. but some u.s. senators are not happy with the progress that has been made. in a hearing, noaa's national service acknowledges it doesn't have the budget or a plan. alaskan senator mark begich. >> have you made a low risk, medium risk analysis? and the answer from your administration was no. which made no sense to us, after a year, knowing, i don't know, tsunami did happen. >> i don't have an answer that is going to make you happy. that's for sure.

new details in a deadly tour bus accident in new york. new documents show the driver may not have had much sleep before the accident, as he said. police say the driver's cell phone and rental car were in almost continuous use during daytime hours, when he said he was sleeping. tour bus was going 78 miles per hour, when it crashed last march. and 15 passengers were killed. police in boston issue a community alert. it's to warn residents about a

new scam. it's happening in cities around the u.s. and elderly women are the targets. i think people in general just pray on old people. it's just a pity. >> reporter: disgust on the streets of chinatown tonight. on the idea that scam artists are taking advantage of elderly women. the victim claims three young women approached her and started asking questions in chinese about her family. in the span of just a few minutes, she says they hypnotized her, convincing her to go back home and put all of her valuables in a bag. she handed over $160,000 in cash and jewelry. >> i think it's very important to teach elderly how to do and how to responsible for those kind of people that approach you. >> reporter: boston police are trying to get that word out. but this is new territory. >> i was skeptical when i heard about it. >> reporter: psychotherapist, lorna holac has been using this on her clients for 20 years. but she says nope -- no one can

be hypnotized to do something they don't want to do. >> in order to be hypnotized by something, they have to trust you and they have to have some kind of rapport with them. and sounds like these women did that. they were the master con -- artists. what happened next, i'm snotd not sure. i don't think it was hypnosis. but it was something pretty powerful. >> reporter: police say this scam is similar to those that have already emerged in asian communities in new york, san francisco, and philadelphia. a suspected thief in jail in canada, is believed to be carrying some precious cargo. a $20,000 diamond. but he has swallowed it. so police have to wait for nature to take its course before they can get it back. the suspect is being closely monitored at a prison in ontario. they say he's being cooperative and voluntarily taking laxatives. a revolutionary study on the effects of cycling.

lisa lay kelly reports, the results show riding frequently can have a negative impact on a woman's sex life. >> reporter: spending a lot of time, sitting atop a tiny bicycle seat may be a hazard to a woman's sexual health. researchers at yale university found that women who ride frequently, especially those with handle bars lower than their saddles experience numbness in their genitalia, caused by lack of circulation. >> it's totally worth my risk. >> reporter: kristen works at the bicycle shop in austin. >> this is more of a cushion. it also has this coming out. >> reporter: she rides 40 miles a day and says she's never noticed an issue down there. . >> maybe at first women would feel some kind of desenseitization. and getting off of their bike. maybe a little numbness. but i don't think it would be anything permanent. >> reporter: dicht different bikes have different geometries. >> women that ride with bull horns, you're going to tend to lean over a lot more than you

dew point in the 40s. east/northeast winds at 9. the barometer, 30.14, currently holding steady. 68 in oakland. and like 35 degrees this morning ho. 75 in cumberland. 74 here. 75, pax river. ocean city, still have the wind off the ocean. only 65. this morning, many suburban areas north of baltimore, washington, were around 42, 43 degrees. probably just about that chilly tonight, with light winds, generally clear skies. a few high, thin clouds moving in. 74 over in kent island. and 72 in rock hall. that light northeast wind looks like it will probably continue tomorrow. and eventually, it's going to become more of an east/southeast wind. that should start bringing more moisture in. dew points are going to come up a little bit. moisture will increase. we think maybe by sunday know afternoon, clouds, maybe sure. out to the west, this is where summer is coming full blast. 98, 94 degrees.

very warm temps out here. it may take a while to get to the east coast. we think sometime maybe by the end of next week. we'll start seeing warm temps. in the meantime, in the 70s, which is exactly where it's supposed to be this time of year. clouds still offshore. and still a little rain going off the carolina coast. that is expected to head more to the west over the next four to five days. eventually, some of those clouds might move into the region. also, with the east winds off the ocean, temperatures probably won't get too much higher than the mid-70s earlier next week. and can be some scattered shower activity, along with that. in the meantime, higher pressure, pleasant conditions through the weekend. sunday as well. looks like maybe by monday or tuesday, that's when we could see showers. northeast winds, 10 to 15. beautiful night tonight. down to 47. normal low, 52. so we're cooler than that. 80 degrees tomorrow. great for the preakness. wear the sun screen out at
