>> reporter: to most boaters, this is a really terrifying story. there were lots of factors involved in this crash police say and they have not ruled out the possibility alcohol may have been involved. >> mayday, mayday, this is the minnow to the u.s. coastguard. >> reporter: this 40-foot boat slammed into the pier injuring the boat's owner and operator 43-year-old jerry redmond of severn and two passengers, a fourth person on board lucky enough to walk away unharmed. rescue crews credit nearby fishermen can making the call for help. >> that good samaritan last night probably saved some lives. >> reporter: the boat was traveling fast close to the shoreline in limited visibility with no radar as it rounded a corner on patapsco river near bear creek and slammed head on into the concrete. this accident happened right at the start of safe boating week ironically. >> one of the biggest cautions is operating at a safe speed. >> reporter: captain dale

plummer towed the battered boat back to shore where it now sit covered at a nearby marina. >> it was a strong impact at the speed that they hit. >> reporter: he says boaters need to be armed with life vests and information in case of an information. >> they need to give us the big four, the location, the number on their vessel, a description of the vessel and the nature of their distress they're experiencing. >> reporter: two people on that boat still are in the hospital with some pretty serious injuries. police say they are waiting for blood alcohol test results on the driver of that boat to come back and the cause of the crash is still officially under investigation. >> thank you, derek. police say they are waiting for the results of tests on the boat driver's blood alcohol level. update to breaking news. >> reporter: big troubles,

vic, this happened about an hour ago. southtown june falls expressway at press top street, a two- vehicle collision. it appeared to be reasonably minor, but city police are now on the scene and they have closed the southbound jones falls expressway between 28th street down to preston street. it has been closed about the past hour. now police as you can see have cleared the scene and it's been cleared about 15 minutes. what they're waiting for is another police officer to come and drive a police car away. apparently only one city tow truck was available at the time and to tow one of the vehicles away. a city police officer had to drive away the second vehicle leaving his police car here unattended. 1 they get these police cars off of the south -- once they get the police cars off of the southbound jones falls expressway, they will reopen it, but it has been closed between north avenue, 28th street, north avenue and a

little south of north avenue. a lot of -- correction, maryland avenue. a lot of traffic has been stopped for some period of time and it appears that now they're starting to get some of these police cars out of here. we hope they'll reopen the jones falls expressway in the next 15 or 20 minutes. traffic has been allowed to travel southbound and been diverted off onto maryland avenue. back to you. >> thank you very much captain mike perry. a verdict for the man charged with killing a glen burnie dentist. mary is live in the newsroom with the decision of the jury. >> an anne arundel jury returns a guilty verdict for 25-year- old dante jeter convicted of killing dr. albert ro who was stabbed and beaten to death inside his dental practice on crane highway in 2006. prosecutors say one of ro's assistants hired jeter to murder her boss because ro caught her stealing from the practice. that dental assistant, shontay hickman, pleaded guilty to first degree murder and testified against jeter at his trial. police are issuing a renewed plea for information

about two of jeter's friends who allegedly participated in the murder. they have not been caught. the rash of fights and stabbings and the beating of a tourist in downtown baltimore are raising concerns and city leaders are taking action. wjz is live at the inner harbor. mike hellgren takes a closer look at the security enhancements. >> reporter: this is critical because there are some big events coming up. a lot of eyes will be on downtown baltimore and you'll definitely see more officers down here, especially from a newly graduated police class. even the rain couldn't keep throngs of tourist as way from the inner harbor, but a string of violence downtown including a beating caught on tape, groups of fighting teenagers and several stabbings during the st. patrick's day weekend have police beefing up their presence including 50 more officers on the streets. new school police patrols and better camera technology including better high definition lenses in the network of 100 cameras with

their eyes downtown. >> i wouldn't sit here and try to alarm everybody. all those issues were managed appropriately by the central district and responding officers. they'll continue to be managed. >> reporter: for the first time the camera network here at bar lore place and gallery place will be link -- harbor place and gallery place will be linked into the police station. ed hale chairs the tourism and convention board. >> i believe the problem has been recognized and people are trying to deal with it. >> reporter: the new layer of security will blanket the area thursday through sunday need. >> i do actually see a lot of security all the time pretty much. >> reporter: you work down here. >> yes. i work at bubba gump shrimp. >> reporter: it comes as baltimore prepares for major events including memorial day weekend. the war of 1812 bicentennial celebration and the grand prix. >> you'll have issues that happen and have large groups that come into downtown. this is going to happen

everywhere, washington, baltimore, philadelphia. what people have to know is the baltimore police department is prepared and we know how to respond. >> reporter: police are also going to divide up this downtown area into smaller portions so that they can better respond to trouble spots when they happen. reporting live at the inner harbor, mike hellgren, wjz eyewitness news. . >> now police stress overall violent crime is down in the city. an arrest in the raid of a so-called pill mill in baltimore county. 45-year-old alina margulis of brooklyn, new york, is in custody indicted on charges of planning to sell powerful painkillers and other drugs. prosecutors say she's part of a group that sold drugs without legal prescriptions out of a lutherville clinic. supporters of same sex marriage get a huge boost. the naacp announces its support for the unions. pat warren is live with more on the announcement and reaction to it. >> reporter: that's right. the resolution comes from the

national headquarters here in baltimore. members of the naacp held a news conference on their decision this morning. >> we live in a democracy and in our democracy we have a benefit of a constitution which defines the equal rights which we all share. >> reporter: same sex marriage supporters believe that includes an equal right to marry. >> same sex couples want the same thing as everybody else. >> reporter: the language of the naacp resolution mirrors the bill passed in maryland in that it supports same sex marriage and religious freedom. it reads in part, "we support marriage equality consistent with equal protection under the law provided under the 14th amendment of the united states constitution. further, we strongly affirm the religious freedoms of all people as protected by the first amendment." >> it is the responsibility in the history of the naacp to speak up on the civil rights issues of our times. >> reporter: the naacp announcement follows the

endorsement by president obama. >> marriage predates politics and all these games we're playing, predates the president and guess what? predates the naacp. >> reporter: the maryland marriage alliance which supports traditional marriage continues to collect signatures on a petition that puts the question to voters. spokesman derek mccoy tells wjz he expects the naacp's decision will actually help the cause of tradition marriage. >> we almost have to thank the president and maybe i need to thank the naacp today because after the president came out in his statements we've gotten more calls and energized people that said you know what? that is not where i stand. they are not speaking for me. where can i not only sign the petition, but can i do a petition drive? >> reporter: the first batch of signatures, more than 18,000, is due may 31st. derek mccoy tells wjz they will be turning them in two days early. i'm pat warren reporting live. now back to you.

>> all 55,000 petitions must be turned in by the end of june. well, we're againing to dry out following a day of rain -- beginning to dry out following a day of rain. all this rain really will help us make up our spring deficit. we are closely tracking the first tropical storm of the season. that's not it. alberto brought rough surf and blustery winds to south carolina as it churns in the atlantic. those are the results there. live look outside now, what impact, if any, will alberto have on our region? wjz is live with the first warning weather coverage. meteorologist bernadette woods is tracking the stops but first bob turk is tracking live radar. >> take a look at radar around the city. the bulk of the activity is north and west of the baltimore metro area heading towards the blue ridge mountains, a concentration of shower activity that way. locally around the baltimore region, not much going on. as we head south and east of the city just a few very light

sprinkles across portions of aa county. if you're heading to the game tonight which starts in an hour there, may be some light shower activity. i would definitely take the rain gear, but looks like at this point it's kind of dry on the eastern shore. look at the rain amounts we've seen so far today, some areas getting up to 3-4-inch and down towards annapolis and aberdeen about 1/3 to 1/4-inch. now we're looking at a tiny little tropical storm. we will look at the latest on alberto. >> we have the 5:00 update and it is still a tropical storm but barely. this is early in the season. the season doesn't officially start until june 1st, so this is prior to the actual hurricane season, but we do have alberto sitting just off the georgia coast. you see it has made more of an easterly turn, 8 mile-per-hour the forward speed of this, still winds 40 miles per hour. now all of the models take this

off to the northeast keeping it on the water away from land and weakening as it moves over cooler water and the real effect you saw with those waves earlier before we came into our weather segment here, the stronger rip currents and higher waves along the southeast coastline there. that's really what we're looking at. our rain today is from a separate storm and we've got another one to talk about with the chance of rain continuing the next couple days. we'll have that forecast coming up. the 137th running of the preakness stakes is one for the history books. picture perfect day helps draw record crowds. it's a big boost for maryland racing. >> they're off in the preakness! >> all eyes on baltimore saturday for the 130th 7th running of the preakness stakes -- 1,307th running of the preakness stakes -- 137th running of the preakness stakes. >> you give the people what they want, they will come out.

we're at cloudy skies and 73 degrees. a disturbing trend in sex crimes against children. more minors are being lured into prostitution often against their will. >> reporter: one report says because of our central location on the east coast, maryland is becoming an epicenter for human sex trafficking and many of

these cases involve children. now today police, hundreds of officers from across the state got together trying to figure out how to stop it. inside a silver spring hotel room a 15-year-old girl was forced to have sex with numerous men after she was lured from new york for a fake modeling job. >> her cell phone had been taken and they said there are guys coming up here and you will do these things. >> reporter: rodney huber is now serving five years in prison for human trafficking. the crime affects up to 300,000 american children every single year. >> human trafficking is an emerging problem in maryland. >> reporter: this special agent with homeland security one of many experts speaking at governor o'malley's conference on this issue intended to train police how to prosecute offenders and identify victims like another maryland teenagers recently saved from gang members who used facebook to entice her to run away from her family. >> once she ran away, they put her into a sex slave for the ms-

13 gang. >> reporter: organizations that work with the victims also spoke at the conference sharing emotional stories from young women trapped as sex slaves, some interviewed for this video. >> all the girls are crying. everybody wants to go home because they're treating us like crap. >> reporter: human sex trafficking cases have been reported in almost every maryland county but lately have been heavily concentrated in the hotel district surrounding bwi where clients are plentiful. since 2007 nine laws have been passed intended to crack down on human trafficking, but another nine bills haven't made it through the legislature. adam may, wjz eyewitness news. >> if you see signs of human trafficking, you can report them to the number on your screen. it's 1-866-dhs-2ice. broken glass but not broken spirits, a baltimore county church hit by vandals and mary joins us now with more.

>> churchgoers are picking up the pieces after vandals do serious damage overnight, but it's not the first time they've been hit. as they vacuum up broken glass inside where someone smashed seven tall windows orange church members in middle river know the same vandal tried to destroy their sign outside. >> it looks as if someone took an axe, chopped into the window here and here and then when they were trying to remove the axe, it pulled the window out. >> it is not the first time vandals have struck this church. just six weeks ago five other windows were broken and two months ago the freon lines to the air conditioning units were cut. the church is holding an emergency meeting with its congregation tonight and they know they'll have to take new steps to keep the church safe. >> we're already talking about doing some fundraisers to try and cover some of the costs to not only cover the windows but also looking into security systems that we have not been

able to afford at this point. >> as the rain falls measurements are taken for new windows and as police investigate and try to catch the vandal, church members say they will try to practice what's preached, turn the other cheek. >> in our hearts it's upsetting to us, but you forgive everybody. >> i think it's just a lost soul, someone that needs to really be prayed for. >> the church estimates the damage caused by the vandals is close to 15 to $20,000. baltimore county police have stepped up patrols near the church. babe ruth is proving to be worth big bucks even decades after his death. a jersey worn by the sultan of swat sold for more than $4.4 million at auction, a record for any item of sports memorabilia. the 1920 new york yankees jersey was worn by ruth sometime in the 1920s and until recently was on display at the babe ruth birthplace museum here in baltimore. >> but it's got a wide girth,

now complete forecasts and the first warning of severe weather. >> here's a live look outside right now. looks like it's clearing, but we've had rain off and on today. >> unfortunately we still have some widely scattered showers around. take a quick look at radar just south and west of downtown, a few showers popping up around glen burnie and so verna park in the last few minutes. they're moving off towards the next week towards catonsville and the western side of town. hopefully the game will be dry tonight. it starts at five after 7:00. had some pretty good rain during the daytime and some areas picking up as much as 3/4- inch. a little cooler out to the west now, 63 in oakland, 70 ocean city, quite a bit of sunshine east of us now. in fact, easton has been in the sun quite a while, 75 there and

75 in d.c., some breaks there. we warmed up because the sun has come out a little bit, 66 in hagerstown. the humidity is high and there's a lot of moisture. it won't take a lot to get the atmosphere fired up. looks like tonight maybe more rain and drizzle could move in later and east winds right off the ocean just bringing lots of moisture in. there's also a system to the west of us. this will help enhance the rain we think tomorrow and unfortunately on wednesday which is our weather day at camden yards, could be wet. we'll have to watch that for you. this little blurb, that's believe it or not alberto. this is low pressure off our coast, really has nothing to do with alberto. alberto is moving off to the east, but we are concerned about this moisture shield coming from the atlantic ocean and also that front from the west. they're kind of combined, a lot

of moisture around, scattered showers and thundershowers across the eastern half of the united states. some of these are producing some big downpours and thunder and lightning in some of those cells. the next 24 to 48 hours we'll watch this low slowly move around the region. it's going to get a lot warmer once it's passed us. the end of the week temperatures could get up to the mid- to upper 80s. winds won't be strong, 5 knots. tonight rain and drizzle from time to time in some places, 62 and fog. tomorrow clouds, some sun and yes, some showers and maybe a thunderstorm and could see some brief downpours in any of those thunderstorm cells tomorrow afternoon into the evening. it looks like pretty much the same forecast for wednesday and maybe a leftover shower thursday as well. >> then we'll make the difference. still to come tonight on wjz eyewitness news. ♪ you may look the other way >> we're remembering robin gibb, the tribute to the lead

wjz.com baltimore. >> from the city to the counties to your neighborhood, now it's complete coverage. it's wjz, maryland's news station. it is just before 6:30. it is clearing and 73 degrees. good evening. thanks for staying with wjz. here's some of the stories people are talking about tonight. 30 days in prison, that is the sentence for the former rutgers student found guilty of bias crimes against his roommate who committed suicide. drew levinson reports from the courthouse in new brunswick, new jersey. >> reporter: dharun ravi showed no expression as judge told him he acted with collosal incense activity. 21-year-old ravi was convicted in march for all the charges against him for using his webcam to spy on his roommate having a sexual encounter with another man. ravi then tweeted about it.

>> i heard this jury say guilty 288 times and haven't heard you apologize once. >> reporter: despite strong words the judge sentenced ravi to just 30 days in jail, far less than prosecutors wanted. shortly after the cyber bullying clementi took his own life jumping off the george washington bridge. >> even i had no idea of the despair and torment tyler must have been feeling and i thought i knew him. >> reporter: ravi's mother spoke in court saying her son suffered in the fallout, the only time during the entire trial ravi showed any emotion. >> he was absolutely devastated and broken into pieces. the media misconstructed the facts to the public and misconceptions were formed. >> reporter: ravi was placed on three years' probation and ordered to get counseling and has to pay $10,000 to a community-based organization which helps the victims of bias creams. ravi -- crimes. ravi and his family left the

court without commenting. the judge granted a stay of the sentence while prosecutors plan their appeal. >> and judge decided that ravi should not be deported to india, his native country. murder at a high school reunion, the verdict in a trial of a man charged with that crime. >> 29-year-old james dixon was convicted of second degree murder in august of 2010. 23-year-old carrie mcnutt was stabbed to death in the arena where a high school reunion was taking place. dixon's first trial ended in a hung jury. dixon is scheduled to be sentenced the end of next month. he got face up to 30 years in . >> despite there being nearly 900 guests at the reunion, only two witnesses came forward. a grand jury hands up an indictment of a woman accused of trying to kill her baby

during a supervised visit. tanisha thomas is charged with multiple counts when thomas allegely pulled out a knife and stabbed the child. the workers' actions saved the baby's death. world leaders meeting at the nato summit work on plans to end the war in afghanistan. as karen brown reports, afghan security forces are supposed to take the lead role next summer, but that may not be enough for hundreds of protestors. >> reporter: wrapping up their chicago meeting nato leaders pledged to end the combat mission in afghanistan by the end of 2014, but nato troops will remain in the country in a support role. >> nato will continue to train, advise and assist and support afghan forces as they grow stronger. >> reporter: president obama spoke briefly monday with both the afghan and pakistani presidents. the u.s. and nato are trying to get pakistan to reopen key supply routes closed after a u.s. airstrike. >> we didn't anticipate that the supply line issue was going

to be resolved by this summit. we knew that before we arrived in chicago, but we're actually making diligent progress on it. >> reporter: as leaders discuss how to wind down the unpopular war, protestors once again took to the streets. police tended to outnumber the protestors as they followed them through the downtown streets. this time they sat down in front of the reelection offices for president obama. it all began with a planned march to the headquarters of boeing. we're here because we've had enough of the war machines and we're tired of paying for it. >> reporter: many downtown businesses including boeing shut down in anticipation of the demonstrations. sunday saw much larger protest crowds and a few scuffles with police that led to 45 arrests. in chicago karen brown, wjz eyewitness news. >> protestors did not have a permit for their march today. a spokeswoman for the occupy chicago movement said and i quote, "the first amendment is the only permit we need."

it's been about a year since an earthquake rattled buildings and nerves in maryland and up the east coast. you're looking at a surveys video from inside a store in mineral, virginia, the epicenter of the 5.8 quake. country music singers performed at a fundraiser this weekend raising more than $150,000 to repair schools in mineral, virginia. time for a quick look at some of the stories in tomorrow morning's edition of the baltimore sun, tips how to co- exist with the nearly 2 million travelers expected to be on the maryland roads the upcoming memorial day weekend weekend, more on the possibility that the steel mill will be soled and more on the at&t -- sold and more on the at&t nationals country club. the number of teenagers in the united states developing type 2 diabetes is rising sharply. randall pinkston reports for wjz on the alarming trend that has doctors worried.

>> reporter: 21-year-old silvesha perry has type 2 diabetes and all the health problems that come with it. >> so this is considered a high blood pressure. >> reporter: doctors diagnosed when she was 15 years old. >> chips, candy, cookies, that was me. so i probably egged it on to happen faster. >> reporter: perry is part of a disturbing trend according to a new study in the journal pete tricks. between 1990 even -- need tricks. between 1999 and 200-- pediatric. between 1999 and 2008 the percentage of teenagers with diabetes jumped from 9% to 23%. >> this leads possibly if we don't intervene to younger and younger people getting cardiovascular disease and it's a wake-up call to work on aggressive treatment and prevention. >> reporter: teens at the greatest risk were overweight or obese and up to 61% of them

least seven people. we have a report from italy with more on the destruction. >> reporter: earthquake survivors are settling into their temporary homes. tent camps have sprung up to shelter the thousands of people who are homeless. this woman says even if they let us go back home, i wouldn't because i'm too scared. the constant heavy rain added to the misery. the deadly 6.0 earthquake struck the region near bologna early sunday morning and powerful aftershocks continue to rattle the area. although no lives were lost in this town, residents did lose a big part of their cultural heritage, the town's ancient churches have collapsed and this medieval castle has been badly damaged. just one of its original four towers is left standing and experts say aftershocks could bring it down. residents are shocked about losing these buildings which

date back to the 14th century. this man says we have lost our history. i was baptized and married in that church and hoped to have my funeral there as late as possible. neighbors walk through the rubble as workers handed out hot drinks to weary residents. it will take weeks to assess the damage and figure out how much it will cost to rebuild. >> now earthquake is estimated to have caused tens of millions of dollars of damage to northern italy's cheese production businesses. a judge requested to delay the start of jerry sandusky's sexual abuse trial. the former penn state assistant football coach is accused of sexually assaulting young boys oh a 14 year pearl. he has pleaded not guilty and -- period. he has pleaded not guilty and remains under house arrest.

took them from kansas city to washington d.c. they won four out of five. they're in first place in the division and have the best record in the american league. of all the players on the current active roster for the orioles none has been an oriole longer han jim johnson. he's a -- than jim johnson, he's a key component to this year's success and has had a hand in closing out more than half of the orioles 27 wins. he's pleased with his personal success, but he's telling me all the guys are keeping it in perspective since it's only just the month of may. >> it's early in the season, but it's rewarding knowing the work we put in and i personally have been through, some of the worst times. so it's a little pit satisfying, but we're still -- bit satisfying, but we're still not at the end goal. i think this year we're better prepared to kind of sustain where we should be at and we'll see where we are the end of the year.
