liftoff, the first private cargo run blasts off to the international space station. one year later president obama addresses the graduating class of joplin high school, one year after their school was devastated by a killer tornado. and defying death. a man survives a nearly 200-foot plunge over the niagara falls. captioning funded by cbs and good morning, everybody. so good to be with you. i'm terrell brown. you know, it's not the final frontier, but certainly it's a new era in space flight. the first private space launched

off this morning. the unmanned rocket and capsule carrying a thousand pounds of supplies, it's one of 12 plans by the corporation spacex. if all goes as planned, it will go off this friday. dick brennan is at the space center this morning. dick, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, terrell. it was a spectacular scene. just about 16 minutes ago, spa spa spacex had a spectacular lift-off, and it is now headed to the international space station. spacex has launched the falcon 9 rocket. it's first private space vessel headed to the international space station. >> launch of the space station falcon 9 rocket to resupply the international space station. >> reporter: spacex is attempting to become the first private space vessel to reach the international space station. this was the second launch attempt for spacex.

>> lift-off. we had a cut-off. lift-off did not occur. >> reporter: lift-off was halted when a faulty check valve caused high pressure in one of the engines. it sensed the pressure buildup and shut down the engine. spacex is one of five private companies attempting to win a nasa contract for manned space flights. the space agency is hoping a private company would provide a more cost-effective replacement for the shuttle program which ended last summer. spacex will use its unmanned dragon capsule to carry more than a thousand pounds of food and supplies to the iss. once there, it will perform a series of practice maneuvers before nasa allows it to birth at the space station. a robotic arm will reach out and pull the capsule in. >> this is a test flight. nasa views test fights as primarily learning opportunities. >> reporter: nasa hopes a private company can deliver people to the space station by 2017.

spacex hopes to do it at least two years earlier. now, if all goes according to plarngs spacex, the falcon 9 rocket, will return to earth sometime around the end of the month. it will splash down in the pacific, much like the old apollo mission, and hopefully be picked up by a ship and be used once again. terrell? >> dick, this is an important moment for the u.s. space program. if all goes well, what's next for spacex. >> reporter: you said the words, terrell "if all goes well." spacex, as you heard, would like to get into manned flights. they say they can do it faster than anybody else. the big question is will nasa be ready. nasa had their budget cut in half this past year. nothing is clear but spacex is certainly confident about its future, terrell. >> we'll certainly be watching. dick, thank you so much. one year ago a massive and powerful tornado devastated the town of joplin. 160 people were killed, hundreds

injured. today the town will break ground as through new schools including a high school. and the speaker at this year's graduation was the president of the united states. danielle nottingham reports. >> reporter: president obama didn't have to look far for motivation behind his commencement address for the joplin high school class of 2012. >> as i look out at this class and across this city, what's clear is that you're the source of inspiration today. >> reporter: it was may 22nd, 2011, when a half-mile wide f-5 tornado struck. when it was over, 7,500 buildings were damaged or destroyed around 161 people were dead, including quinton anderson's parents. >> i remember like it's still with me. >> reporter: anderson and his parents were in their home, which used to be right here. it took a direct hit from the tornado. he was found across the street with a broken back. when he woke up in the hospital

three days later, his sister told him their parents were killed. >> i'm one of those people that doesn't cry when people are around. when i was alone, i cried. >> reporter: homes that can withstand 255-mile-an-hour winds are going up, and the high school which was leveled has relocated to a strip mall. it's a landscape that's forever changed. >> you will not be defined by the difficulties you face, but by how you respond, with grace and strength and a commitment to others. >> reporter: for quinton and his classmates, some of life's hardest challenges may be already behind them. danielle nottingham, cbs news. the president arrived in joplin following the nato summit in chicago. leaders there agreed on how to end the war in afghanistan. nato will keep combat troops in afghanistan for two more years. that's when the mission and

shift of training and advisory will take place. afghan forces will take over leading combat forces next year. the president greeted pakistan's president and afghan president hamid karzai. pakistan is not a nato member and continues to block nato supply routes into afghanistan. while mr. obama conducts his duties as president, he's also in campaign mode. we were blinded of that during the nato summit when he was asked about new campaign ads that attack him. the ads were about mitt romney and he only carried about the bottom line. but the tone of the ad has upset some of the president's suppo support supporters. susan mcginnis is in washington this morning. susan, good morning to you. >> good morning, terrell. the president shrugged off the comments and said this is what the election will be about. president obama called into question mitt romney's business experience monday, the president saying romney's work in private equity doesn't translate to the white house.

>> he's saying i'm a business guy and i know how to fix it and this is his business, and when you're president as opposed to the head of a private equity firm, your job is not simply to maximize problems. your job is to figure out how everybody in the country has a fair shot. >> reporter: the attack goes directly at romney's central argument that he, not president obama, is better suited to lead the economy. president obama was responding to a question about a recent ad that attacks romney's former firm bain capital. romney's campaign is hitting back, saying the president opposes free enterprise, and the republican is using democrats such as newark mayor cory booker to make his point. >> you look at the totality of his record, they've done a lot

and survived. he's only the third person not wearing a safety device that lived after taking the plunge into the falls. rescuers had to go down and pull him to safety. police say it was a suicide attempt. he's in critical condition but he will survive. "cbs moneywatch" now on a tuesday. a huge fight over a file-sharing fine and how much extra would you pay for a window seat? ashley morrison here in new york. good morning. >> good morning to you, terrell. they went on a buying spree. tokyo's nikkei gained 1% while hong kong's hang seng rose more than half a percent. it appears investors don't like facebook's stock. they pledge 11% in their second day of trading and that was after gaining just 23 cents a share on friday. monday's loss sent facebook founder mark zuckerberg's fortune down more than $2 billion.

facebook fell despite a positive day on wall street. the dow was up 135 points while the nasdaq gained 68. it looks like a former college student may have to pay nearly $700,000 in fines for allegedly downloading music. the court is refused to hear an appeal by joe tenenbaum. in 2009 a jury ordered him to pay $675,000 to the recording industry for downloading and distributing 30 songs. a federal judge could reduce that fine. and it is getting harder to sit next to your loved ones on a flight. airlines are reserving more seats for passengers willing to pay extra to sit next to a window or on the aisle. that's making it harder to find groups of seats together. terrell, i do know for experience, though, if you show up for a crying baby, they'll gladly give you that third seat real fast. >> you know what? it's getting to the point they're going to charge you to breathe on an airplane, you know? you have to pay for everyting. >> how much do you want to breathe, the whole flight? >> ashley morrison in new york. thank you so much.

in the northwest look for showers and thunderstorms. some areas could get as much as an inch of rain. another storm system could produce hail and high winds. thunderstorms will roll through the southern plains. severe storms are possible from north dakota to minnesota, and showers will linger in the pacific northwest. in sports this morning say good-bye to the los angeles lakers. kobe bryant tried his but, putting in 42 points but oklahoma city would not be denied. kevin durant scored 45 to help them roll. 106-90 to eliminate the lakers. they eelg play san antonio on sunday. and a blowout in boston. in the second quarter, andre iguodala, a big one-handed jam. gives philadelphia a brief five-point lead and they just run over the sixers. they crush philadelphia, 101-85 the final.

to hockey now, the devils showed some fight against the rangers. new jersey's zach parise had two goals and an assist while goalie martin brodeur made 27 tough saves. the devils take them down, 4-1. they're two games apiece. and are you ready for some football? peyton manning sure looking like it. the new denver's qb took his first full practice in 16 months. he was nailing receivers. he says he feels great. he appears to have completely recovered from the nerve injury that led him to be released from the indianapolis colts this season. it will be interesting. when we come back, to test or not to test, the controversy over the new recommendation for a prostate cancer screening tool. sometimes, i feel like it's me against my hair.

mostly sunny and 79 in st. louis. partly sunny in denver and 88. mostly sunny and 57 in seattle. the former rutgers university student convicted in the webcam spy case will spend only 30 days in jail. dharun ravi showed no emotion when he was sentenced yesterday. he could have gotten ten years. prosecutors plan to appeal saying one month is not long enough. in march ravi was found guilty of a hate crime for spying on his gay roommate tyler clementi. tyler's mother says she still doesn't know why her son committed suicide. >> he obviously hid his feelings and thoughts very well. even i had no idea of the despair and torment tyler must have been feeling, and i thought i knew him. ravi begins his 30-day sentence on may 31st. a panel of health experts came out with a controversy

a routine prostate cancer screening because the treatments may do more harm than good. about 28,000 men in america die from prostate cancer each year, and as dr. jon lapook tells us, the new guidelines have already unleashed a heated debate. >> reporter: for 20 years the message has been the same. get a psa test every year or two, detect prostate cancer early, and save your life. dr. michael lefevre helped lead the panel that said the message is wrong. >> the problem is that in contrast to the small benefits, a significant number of men will be harmed by the tests and treatments that follow prostate cancer screening. >> the task force said the psa is unreliable, giving a false result 83% of the time. prostate cancer usually progresses so slowly they usually die of something else. the panel is among the most influential in the country. it cited an 11-year study of

over 1,000 men. the options for men with prostate cancer include radiation, surgery, hormones, or simply observing. side effects of treatments include erectile dysfunction and urinary difficulties. lefevre says the consequences could be even worse. >> ultimately we'll find that two to three men out of those thousand will, in fact, have a serious complication such as a heart attack, strobe, blood closet, or even death. >> the recommendation sparked fury at the annual meeting of the annual urological association. in a statement the group said it was outraged and that the recommendation was inappropriate and irresponsible. >> i do not believe that the medical evidence in any way supports this conclusion. >> dr. herbert lepor is the head of urology at the medical center. >> psa has taken us down the road to increasing prostate cancer deaths.

we all recognize we've got a long way to go to perfect treatment, but the last thing we need to do is turn back. >> we have been taught for years to fear cancer and that the only hope is early detection and treatment, and so for both doctors and patients alike, it's difficult to accept that some cancers don't need to be discovered and don't need to be treated. >> african-americans and men with a family heft of prostate cancer are at an increased risk of the disease. even so they say there's not enough evidence to recommend screening in either of these two groups. >> a teenager thankful to be alive this morning after being rescued from a raging waterfall northeast of seattle. 13-year-old william hickman got swept over a 10-foot waterfall after he tried to go for a quick dip. he managed to pull himself into a narrow rock shell. the boy stayed there for more than eight hours until rescuers used a helicopter to get him to safety. coming up after your local news on "cbs this morning,"
