behavior supervisors knew about and tolerated. senator susan collins pointed out the agents involved registered the women at the hotel, using their own names. >> that suggests to me that they weren't worried about being caught. >> i just think that between the alcohol and i don't know, the environment, these individuals did some really dumb things. >> reporter: both republicans and democrats on the committee expressed support for director sullivan. but they still aren't convinced columbia was an isolated incident. >> reporter: the washington post reports four of the agents that were fired or resigned are now seeking to get their jobs back. >> our numbers contradict what was in the washington post article. we have two employees who had originally said that they were going to resign that have now come back and said that they're going to challenge that. >> reporter: director sullivan said the agency will work to

permanently revoke security clearance for those two agents. in washington, dabiel nottingham, weench -- danielle nottingham, wjz eyewitness news. . >> the inspector general says his department will conduct its own independent investigation of the u.s. secret service. a shocking development in the hazing death of a florida a&m drum major. denise is in the newsroom with more on what one band member saying. denise? >> one of robert champion's fellow band members said champion asked to go through the hazing ritual because he saw it as an honor. champion died after a beating on a buzz outside a hotel in orlando. his death revealed the disturbing culture of hazing in the famed band. he suffered blund blunt trauma blows to his body and died from shock, caused by severe bleeding. champion's father says his son was hazed because he was opposed to the hazing ritual. 11 defendants are facing felony

charges. mary? >> denise, thank you. the florida a&m marching band is suspended until at least next fall. an odenton man is under arrest for impersonating a police officer. anne arundel county says mark elmer told several people he was an undercover police officer. they say he ordered them to produce identification in a parking lot. victims say he even made one of them take a field sobriety test. he's charged with impersonating a police officer and disorderly conduct. a montgomery county 911 dispatcher is off the job tonight, after falling asleep on the job. it happened in april, but the tapes are just being released as the investigation continues. >> could you send an ambulance or anything right now? [ snoring ] >> reporter: the 911 call came from a woman in a rockville condo. her husband was having trouble breathing. he was turning blue. the call taker transferred her to a dispatcher, but quickly

realized something wasn't right. >> hold on a second, ma'am. let me try to get them on the line again. >> okay. >> reporter: montgomery county assistant fire chief scott graham says the sleeping dispatcher was 17 hours into a 24-hour shift. >> the employee was immediately taken from the floor, placed on paid, administrative leave, pending the outcome of the inquiry. >> reporter: after the caller had been on the line for more than four minutes, the sleeping dispatcher finally wakes up and takes over the call. >> he stopped breathing for a little while. and now, i push his -- i push my hand on his chest. >> what's the address? >> uh-huh. >> what's the address? [ crying ] >> ma'am, what's the address? >> reporter: the 24-hour, 911 shifts are now under scrutiny, after the dispatcher fell asleep. >> hold on one second, let me try to get him on the line again. >> okay. >> reporter: an ambulance was finally sent to the woman's condo. and her husband was taken to the hospital. he is expected to be okay.

police have not released the dispatcher's name, pending the outcome of the investigation. a warning tonight for people looking to buy expensive items on craigslist. baltimore police say robbers, posing as sellers, are luring would-be buyers to the same spot in northwest baltimore, the 3500 block of cal way avenue. in several incidents, the buyer was met with a man with a gun who stole several thousand dollars. police say if you meet someone from craigslist, meet in a well lit populated area. and use a cashier's check. fish dead and dying. they're being found in a local creek. mike schuh has more on the cause. >> reporter: maryland's department of the environment says fish in northern anne arundel county are suf suffocating. they say an algae bloom is suffocating the oxygen out of the water. they estimate 6,000 fish have died. algae blooms grow like crazy, when the water is full of

as demonstrators set off fireworks and threw beer bottles. at least 100 people were arrested. the protest also aimed at a new law, requiring organizers to give demonstrations eight hours in advance. a 3-year-old in china is lucky to be alive. after taking his toy motor bike for a spin on a busy street. you can see him here, heading straight into the intersection. he weaves through traffic. and amazingly, avoids being hit. a police officer eventually spots the 3-year-old and leads him to safety. the boy is reunited with his frantic grandfather, who says the boy wandered off while he was in the bathroom. >> wow. tied to a jeep and dragged through a truck stop. that is what happened to one dog in orch org. -- in oregon. the four people inside the jeep are facing animal cruelty charges. [ dogs barking ] >> reporter: rhino is one of the only dogs that isn't barking inside a noisy shelter.

his front and back paws are bandaged up after most of his nails and foot pads were ripped out last night. >> i am at travel america, in troutdale, and there are some people in a parking lot that have their dog tied to a car. and now they're trying to nurse its paws. >> reporter: several witnesses called 911 to report rhino tied to the passenger's side of a jeep, and being tragged through the parking lot. the jeep going 10 miles approximate are hour and dangerously close to gas lines. police arrested four people inside that jeep. all say they forgot rhino was still tied up when they took off, and pleaded not guilty before a multinomah county judge this afternoon. >> mine are a member of the family. there's no way i'd forget him. >> sharon saw police in the parking lot but had no idea a

considering dropping the euro. and many analysts believe the country's june 17th elections are really a referendum, on whether greece should stop using europe's currency. leaders are coming up with ways to stimulate economic growth and prevent the region's tent crisis from spiraling out of control. and governments said sales of new homes rose 3.3% last month. led by strong gains in the midwest and west. luxury told builders after its best spring selling season in years. and facebook has been published for only four days and it's already being hit with a shareholder lawsuit. the banks are accused of hiding facebook's lowered sales forecast just days ahead of its initial public offering. facebook says the lawsuit is without merit. two days of steep selling.

it is 4:30. 77 degrees. partly sunny. hello, thanks for staying with eyewitness news. i'm denise koch. >> and i'm vic carter. here's what people are talking about. >> if you are texting while driving and you have an accident, it's your fault. but what about the person who was texting with you. as mark strausman reports for wjz, that question is at the heart of a landmark lawsuit. >> reporter: accident photos tell the story. on september 21st, 2009, the can you berts were ride their motorcycle, about a mile from their new jersey home. this chevy truck swerved across the center line and hit them, head-on. and they saw it coming. >> what i saw was the gentleman in the truck, steering with his elbows, with his head down. i could tell he was text messaging. >> i looked down, after the impact. and my leg was torn off. and i asked my wife if she was okay. and she told me, the bones in

her legs were going through her pants. >> reporter: both can you berts lost a leg in the crash. kyle best, then 18, pleaded guilty to three motor vehicle violations, including using a handheld device while driving. the can you berts are now suing him as a distracted driver for civil damages. and in a novel twist, are also suing shannon colonia, his girlfriend, for sending him text messages while he was driving and distracting them. phone records show they exchanged texts that day. and skippy wineberg argues colonia was electronically present in the crash. she said she may have known he was driving as they exchanged text messages leading up to the crash. >> what i find was interesting was her testimony at depositions was that she answered by saying, this is what teenagers do. >> reporter: lawyers representing cologna didn't report our calls or e-mails. but their lawyer says the suit

against her is a leap of logic and should be dismissed. >> on friday, a new jersey judge will decide whether the can you berts have a case against the sender of the text message. a pakistani surgeon, recruited, is sentenced to 33 years in prison. >> vic, the pakistan government found dr. shaquille afridy guilty of treason. in january, leon pineta confirmed the doctor had worked for the u.s., to verify bin laden's presence. he was arrested shortly after the u.s. troops killed the al qaeda leader. months later, a pakistani leader recommended that he be tried for treason. in a statement, pineta says, this is a real mistake. >> under pakistan's tribal justice system, dr. afridy has the right to appeal. a vial of president ronald reagan's blood is up for sale.

his son, michael reagan, is calling the sale outrageous. and many other people agree with him. >> reporter: in the hours after president reagan was shot in 1981, doctors sent vials of his blood to a maryland lab for testing. notice, one of the purported samples has shown up for sale online. an overseas auction house is offering a small glass vial, which it claims holds traces of dried blood from america's fortth president. a 5-inch tube carries the president's name and the last name of his doctor, aaron. the label has the designation thor, meaning mr. reagan was a thoracic patient with a chest wound. and it's stamped march 30, 1981, the date of the assassination attempt. john highbush of the reagan foundation says mr. reagan's blood should not be traded or sold like a baseball card. these is tissue of the president of the united states. this is something that doesn't belong in the public. it belongs with the family. it belongs with the estate.

>> reporter: the anonymous seller says the vial of blood has been with his family for 31 years, ever since his mother brought it home from the blood lab where she worked at the time. the auction house has offered no proof nait is legitimate. but there are bigger concerns. >> it's just basic human dignity. and this strikes me as being tacky. it's taking the presidential memorabilia notion to a very bizarre new level. >> reporter: bob or in washington. >> bidding for the vial has past $11,000. and is set to end tomorrow. authorities were set to shoot dozens of exotic animals, and now, new legislation is expected to be signed. >> reporter: the measure will ban new ownership of exotic animals, while allowing current owners to keep their pets by obtaining a new state-issued permit. the push for a crackdown took

good afternoon, guys. we'll start with bob. >> and it's been a great day. all things at this time. it was a nice little breeze. had a lot of sunshine for a while. or clouds here and there. but we do have shower activity in some areas. not around the baltimore city region now. but we have some stuff to the west of us and to the east of us. a batch of stuff on the eastern shore. pretty heavy thunderstorm activity there. and it's pretty slow-moving stuff. so you can see some heavy downpours. there you see it around queenstown, easton, denton. up toward chestertown as well. further west, another batch of storms around the blue ridge there. and another popping up to the south of that region. just north of washington. pretty good stuff. just there you see it. around rockville. that's moving up toward montgomery county, not toward the baltimore region. for the time being, it's pretty quiet around here. looks like hopefully it will stay that way. while you guys are outside. tell us a little more about weather day today. >> reporter: well, you were down here with us, bob. and we had a wonderful day. i mean, these continue to add up to be just great days.

trial of an awol soldier, accused of plotting an attack on fort hood in texas. mike schuh has more on what was revealed in the courtroom today. >> reporter: a police detective testified, a number of suspicious gun store purchases lead them to nasser jacer abdoe. prosecutors say abdoe, who has been accused of spitting blood on authorities, bought a powder. they claim he planned to plant an explosive at a arrest rant full of fort hood troops. however, the defense argues that no such bomb was ever built. he faces six charges, include weapons of mass destruction. >> he faces up to life in prison if convicted. a homeowner's front lawn becomes a wrestling ring. joe conger has more on the fight caught on camera. >> reporter: caught on camera, a homeowner in his skivvies, in a scuffle with home invaders. >> i had to get ready to, you know, defend myself.

but i still didn't want to let this guy go. >> it started with a burglar in the bedroom. >> he put his hands on the tv. and i just like -- am i really seeing this? i was like, hey, man. >> reporter: the would-be thief didn't get the tv. but got a whole lot of trouble. chased by jaime with a bowie knife. >> it's my grandmother's knife. >> the homeowner noticed another suspect coming from behind the house. so he tackled him, too, mma style. >> i didn't want him to flee the scene or get away. so i'm just holding him. >> reporter: holding him for 120 seconds, waiting for law enforcement. but insteads are the other two thieves returned, to help their friend escape the choke hold. >> he was pleading for his life the whole time. >> reporter: in the end, the trio got away empty-handed but they were arrested later by deputies. the three are charged with burglary. jaime says he's not a hero. he's a father, husband, and a

homeowner who just had enough. >> just having to feel that. it's terrible. and it's an ugly situation. i don't think anybody should have to go through it. >> reporter: the suspects are reportedly in jail on $20,000 bond. a new jersey couple is in jail today. you can see the father put his child in the machine, the washing machine, as his mother looks on. but when he shuts the door, the machine automatically locks and starts a cycle with the child still inside. it took more than a minute for a worker finally to unplug the washer. the boy's father said he was playing peekaboo. the state's attorney's office is investigating. in florida, one man is now behind bars, after he sends his child to school with a book bag full of drugs. police say the toddle to ther showed up with the pot. the boy's father says the backpack belongs to someone who left it in his car. a washington state man goes

to see a movie and winds up in jail. jeff dubois reports. he gets angry at some noisy children and loses his temper. >> kids are kids. and you have to have some patience. >> reporter: but patience was not on display at an amc movie theater in kent recently. police say a group of kids were acting up during a movie. they were 10-year-olds. you've seen it before. >> just talking through the entire movie. being on their phone. >> if you don't have kids, it's kind of annoying. >> reporter: the extra noise must have really annoyed a 21- year-old auburn man. according to investigators, young kim asked them to be quiet. and when they didn't, he allegedly hopped over the seats and socked one of the 10-year- olds in the face. >> oh, wow. >> that's pretty bad. >> reporter: the force of the blow apparently bloodied the boy's noise, -- nose, and knocked a tooth out of his mouth. >> you don't hit a kid. it's crazy. >> the boys went and told security. police showed up and arrested

the 21-year-old. according to authorities, he thought the boy was a grown man. >> please. come on. no, i don't believe that. i think he got out of control. >> i'm afraid to go to the movie theaters now. you know? next thing you know, i'm going to get slapped. >> reporter: we went to young kim's home in auburn today to ask him about the assault. but no one answered. he will have to answer to a judge, though, when he's arraigned next week. >> charging documents reveal the man told police he hit the child because he got mad. a popular actor is hospitalized after getting hit by a car. actor michael mckeen suffered a broken leg when a car struck him as he walked in manhattan. mckeen has stared in movies and tv shows, including this is spinal tap and laverne and shirley. he is in stable condition but had to drop out of a show. it's called the commercial zapper. and the dish network says it

allows customers to automatically filter out all of the commercials from their dvr recordings. those advertisements are a key source of revenue for network television stations. in an ironic twist, many networks have refused to run ads for the zapper on their air. a man whose real name is gary connery wowed spectators in england as he jumped from the air. using his trusty wing suit, connery flew for about a mile before landing in cardboard boxes. officials say this is the first time anyone has jumped from such a height without a parachute and lived. >> those suits are used a lot for riding in the air along cliffs and everything. national geographic has an incredible piece on that. >> i'll take your word for it. i would never get in one. it's warm and humid. should we look out for scattered thunderstorms? bob turk has the updated first warning forecast next. and he'll tell us. ,,,,,,,,,,,,,

might just make it across the bay into the baltimore region. particularly harford county, i think, over the next hour or two. we'll keep watching it. we're at 77 degrees right now. it will slowly drop, barometer right now, holding steady. southeast winds at 8. right now, around the area, 61. the cool spot in oakland. or ocean city at 66. easton, the hot spot. 82. had a lot of sun. but sures in that region, as you saw. locally, temperatures in the low to mid, even upper 70s now. rock hall. looks like that rain is moving pretty much toward your region. we have a southeast wind that is pushing this activity from southeast to northwest tonight. kind of rotating around. so pretty good shot somebody in our region is going to see more rain yet this evening. and looks like again tomorrow will be stuck with a very similar pattern. we still have kind ever a spin down here in the atmosphere. to the upper level system, with cold air aloft. sun comes out. and things are just kind of cooking in the afternoon. see that spin down there?
