dramatic breakthrough. a 6-year-old disappears, 33 years ago. >> how a suspect in the aton pates case is implicating himself. hi, everybody. i'm mary bubala. >> i'm kai jackson. here's what people are talking about. he vanished on his way to the bus stop, 33 years ago today. and today rather, the nypd announces they have a suspect in custody in the case of 6- year-old aton participates. dick brennan reports, he has already confessed to the crime. >> the nypd has confessed to the diss appearance of aton participates. the boy disappeared 33 years ago. and now, a man, named pedro hernandez, is in custody. >> he alleges that he lured the boy, killed the boy, and disposed of the body. >> reporter: cbs news correspondent, and former director of national

intelligence john miller says, it's unlikely that hernandez can lead them to aton's body. description of how and where, they say it does not appear that it was disposed of in such a way nait was going to be recovered now. >> reporter: hernandez was arrested at his home near camden, new jersey. a woman who answered the door there, refused to talk to reporters. >> i said no comment. >> reporter: afon was last seen on the block, walking to the school bus alone for the first time. his disappearance still rattles people here. >> reporter: 83-year-old clara fordun recalls seeing aton in the neighborhood. >> i used to see him pass by. but it was a very sad case. >> reporter: tom pryor was a boy when aton vanished. >> i remember all of the parents where i lived were making sure their kids didn't go out. and everybody was sort of freaking out about it. >> reporter: aton's parents still lived down the block from where he disappeared and have kept the same phone number, in case their son ever tried to call. in new york city, dick brennan,

wjz eyewitness news. >> and aton was one of the first children to,a peer on the side of a milk carton for a missing child alert. his disappearance led to may 25th being known as national missing children's day. freak farm accident. three workers missing for hours in kent county are found dead. denise is in the newsroom with more on how police think they died. denise? >> well, kai, the workers, 48- year-old glen knowlt and his two sons, 18-year-old kelvin, and 14-year-old closeon, are from lancaster, pennsylvania. their bodies were found in a 2 million-gallon septic pond. sky eye chopper 13 is over the dairy farm. the three had been missing since 2:00 p.m. yesterday afternoon. police say an empty tractor was still running next to the manure pond, where the three were believed to have been working. vacuum trucks from a nearby farm were called in to remove manure from the pits overnight in order to get to the bodies. kai? >> autopsies will determine how

the knowlts died. wjz is in kent county. we'll have more on this story, tonight at 5:00 and 6:00. a smoking suitcase sends the bomb squad running to bwi marshall airport. terminal w. a southwest plane was about to take off for las vegas. somebody saw a bag on the ramp outside the gate, with some kind of spray coming out. the bag's owner was taken off the plane. and the interview by police, bomb expert the found the bomb to be an aerosol can causing the spray. the incident did have impact on operations. everything, we're told, is back to normal now. the navy is investigating a fire aboard one of its nuclear submarines. they broke out wednesday at a naval shipyard in maine. teresa garcia reports, the ship's nuclear reactor was not affected. >> reporter: the fire on board the uss miami is out the morning after flames broke out at the ports mouth naval shipyard in maine.

the ship has been docked there there. >> the fire and damage was limited to the four compartment spaces only, which includes crew living and command and control spaces and the torpedo room. there were no respects -- weapons on board the ship. >> reporter: the sub's nuclear reactor was isolated in another part of the sub and was not involved. >> the shi ship's reactor remains in a safe and stable condition throughout the event. >> reporter: navy officials praised the firefighters, saying extreme heat and smoke, in the contained spaces, made their work especially risky. >> the heroic action of this team of firefighters, stabilized the situation. protected the crew. >> several people were hurt, including five firefighters. one had to be removed on a stretcher, but all were treated and released. the shipyard has reopened and a full investigation is under way. teresa garcia, wjz eyewitness news. >> the uss miami has a crew of

13 and 120 enlisted personnel. city homicide detectives are investigating a murder, following an apparent home invasion in north baltimore. jessica kartalija is live in the newsroom with more on what police are saying. jess? >> kai, police responded last night for shots fired. they found 35-year-old teman frederick in an upstairs bedroom, dead with a bullet wound to the head. police say several men forced open the kitchen door around 9:00 last night and began to fight with frederick. police say there was a struggle and broken furniture. the teenage daughter was home at the time. she called 9 -- 911. officers say they noted a strong odor of marijuana inside the home. they say the attack does not appear to be random. >> police so far say there is no motive. frederick has a history of drug arrests. the race is close. and it's tightening in tonight's wjz campaign 2012 report. a new poll shows president obama is leading mitt romney

and three battleground states. danielle nottingham reports for wjz from washington. >> reporter: students gave mitt romney a warm welcome at the philadelphia charter school, where he went to talk about education. >> we allow more choice for parents. i would like every parent to have a choice. and every child to have a chance. >> reporter: the teachers had some challenging questions for the republican presidential hopeful, who says reducing class size does not improve student performance. >> and i can't think of any teacher. mr. bennett, would you want more kids in your classroom? >> reporter: romney's visit to the heavily democratic neighborhood came as his campaign released a new tv ad. >> day 1, president romney ends deficit reductions. >> romney's ads hit the battleground states where the race is heating up. a new poll shows president obama slightly ahead in three key states, including florida. wednesday, a different poll put

down for an undetermined amount of time. then layoffs will begin june 4th. it will help its workers with unemployment benefits and job placement. an afternoon slowdown at the fort mchenry toll plaza, thanks to a stuck truck. you can see from sky eye chopper 13, the truck was traveling in the southbound lanes when it became wedged in the toll lanes. state police and mdta say the truck was an oversized load that should have taken another route. the vehicle has been removed. and traffic is once again flowing. well, it is just a beautiful day outside. here is a live look. it is bright and warm. a little humid. but overall, just gorgeous. wjz has weather and traffic together. meteorologist tim williams is here with the updated numbers from first warning weather. tim? >> good afternoon, mary. good afternoon, everyone. it is a gorgeous afternoon. the dew points have dropped. which means the humidity levels have been pretty high as mary mentioned, but they have gone down through the last few hours of this afternoon. take a look. and you see a little

disturbance in the northeastern portion of the state. and as we take a closer look at what is going on there. really shows that elkton is seeing light shower activity, over toward the top of the 95 stretch. there is even just maybe a thunderstorm or so, move being into the region as we are moving -- or moving into the afternoon. still, with this heat level up, it is going to be pretty much a summer type pattern. this unstable air is moist. and it just takes a little sun to start to bring that out of the atmosphere. so these little pop-up storms are what we can expect over the next few days. but the temperatures are going to be the real story. they're going to gun. and we'll talk about just how high. but right now, 81 degrees at bwi marshall. 72 on the shore. it's going to be a pretty nice summertime weekend for the first unofficial summer -- weekend of summer. how about that, kai? >> sounds good. >> i'll looking forward to it, tim. thank you. let's check in on the roads with christ breslin at wjz traffic control. >> hi, kai. hi, everyone. well, some slowing on the beltway that we need to watch

it's sunny and 81 degrees in central maryland. the complete first warning weather forecast is coming up. a man storms a kansas news station after his story idea getting turned down. and it's all caught on video. watch as he throws a lamp through the station's glass doors. the man then runs through the hall, stabbing two employees. several workers hold him down until police arrive. employees who were injured were treated for minor injuries. authorities say the man was upset at how the department of veterans affairs is handling his case. stay -- the man and woman seen putting an infant boy into a washing machine will not face any charges. however, as ann mapreerey green reports, the child's mother is not happy about what happened.

>> nobody should put a child in a washing machine. >> doreen davids still can't believe someone did that to her 1-year-old grandson, samir. it was all caught on surveillance video in a laundromat camera. the only one more angry is samir's mother, who left her. >> i didn't know anything about it. >> she didn't find out about the incident until the video hit the news. she watched in shock as the employee cut the power to the machine, freeing samir from the wild ride. >> you knew right away that was your son? >> that's merand -- her and my baby. she said it wasn't her. >> reporter: that was a lie. in fact, the babysitter took samir to the hospital. now, the babysitter is no longer answering phone calls and she has no idea who the man in the video is. police do, though. they spoke with the couple and determined no purposeful endangerment occurred. the grandmother is pretty

clear, that damage was done to her grandson. >> i think it was just an accident. i don't think he meant to do it like that. >> the incident -- infant bawnt wasn't injured. but they are investigating. another bumpy day on wall street. markets dip in early trading but rebound by the closing bell. nasdaq down 11. let's go to new york, where alexis christoforous has tonight's cbs money watch update. stocks lost ground, despite some encouraging news about the u.s. economy. 2,000 fewer americans applied for unemployment benefits last week. analysts say it's a sane the job market is seeing some modest growth. and orders for big ticket items, including planes, cars and appliances, rose slightly in april, after dropping in march. but the uncertainty in europe continues to weigh on invests -- investors. and new figures show the debt crisis there is taking a toll

on the economy. confidence fell to a six-month low. shares of hewlett packard rallied after the company said it would cut 2700 jobs over the next years as part of a turnaround. but tiffany stock sank. there has been a slowdown in demand in the u.s. and europe. mortgage rates are at a record low, for the fourth straight week. the rate on a 30-year mortgage, averaging 3.78%. the rate on a 15-year, which is popular with people looking to refinance held steady at 3.04%. that's also a record. applications to refinance jumped 5 1/2% last week as more home buyers look to cash in on these historically low rates. that's your money watch. for more, head to cbsmoneywatch.com. in new york, i'm alexis christoforous. nasa releases some spectacular new images of the sun. and they're like nothing you've seen before. this enhanced video showed the

intense activity on the sun's surface. it was shot over 24 hours in september of last year. nasa says there is no science behind it. it's just simply a beautiful video. >> intense activity. it's the sun, it's a ball of fire. what more do you need to know about it? >> kai, the sun is on fire. yes, tim, mary and are in -- i are in concert with you about this summer weather. >> it's gorgeous. >> and it's nice. we've had a pretty good streak of holiday's weekends. mother's day weekend was very nice. we had a pretty decent. in fact, you start back last holiday, with december and all, new year's. we've had the fireworks. well, here we are with the unofficial start of summer. again, the weather is cooperating. right now, we have just a pop- up, shower up toward northeast maryland. up near elkton. you can see some bright reds there. but that is going to be indicative of the type of summertime pattern we're in, with very warm, we'll call it a little unstable air right now. and that is just going to be the case. that will kind of take this in the other direction. you can see, elkton over towards port deposit and down towards havre de grace. really the only places we'll see activity now. this will really set the stage for the next few days as the heat kicks in.

as these dew points and relative humidity starts to gun. right now, we're at 81 degrees. normal high is 76. normal overnight low is 54. keep that in mind, as we talk about temperatures. 54% relative humidity. southerly component of this wind right now is bringing in warm air. 10 miles per hour, from the southeast. 30.06 is the barometer reading. we have 70 in oakland. closest to the south, we have 83 in d.c. 82 in easton. 81, we should say, at bwi marshall. but around the immediate metro area, everyone pretty much that that 83-degree range. bwi to rock hall and back over to columbia, down to kent island and to annapolis. that's going to be the trend that we have over the next few days, as the winds take a bit of a uniform shift. from the east to the south and southwest. they're going to be bringing in some very warm air. already, our neighbors to the south and southwest are tapping into the upper 80s and 90s. and that is what we're going to be dealing with.

high pressure is going to set up much like it is now. just to our west and southwest. we call it a heat pump effect. which really there is nothing stoping that flow. around that high is going to keep on pushing in that warm air, right around the midatlantic. and what that's going to mean for us is over the next several days, with a low that is going to pass to our north, not really impacting us. we don't really have much by way of any disturbance. so we're going to be looking at this type of a setup. and the more heat we get in. the more our temperatures are going to go right up. we go from warm conditions like we have today. the humidity builds in. then we look at hot conditions. it's really going to be the first time we're talking about a heat index. temperatures in the mid-80s will feel measure like the 90s and will actually be closer to the 90s. this is how it all shapes up. 8:22, your sunset time today, with southwest wind on the bay. 5 to 10 knots. thunderstorm in spots, as you've already seen toward northeast. and tomorrow, 87 degrees. that will be the coolest of the next five days. we'll talk about just how warm

mostly sunny. thanks for staying with eyewitness news. i'm vic carter. >> and i'm denise koch. here's what people are talking about. >> deliberations continue on for a fifth day in john edwards' campaign corruption trial. jurors must decide whether moneyry received was a -- money he received was a gift or campaign donation. >> john edwards arrives each day as he does with his elderly parents and wearing the same green tie he's worn all week. inside the courthouse, a jury of eight men and four women are deciding whether the former senator conspired to violate campaign law while running for president. >> reporter: on their fifth day of deliberations, jurors asked to review 20 more pieces of evidence. >> in? way, they're -- some ways they're taking it all in. >> reporter: during the nearly month-long trial, jurors heard details about edwards' mistress, their baby, and the effort to conceal it all from edwards' wife.

but the issue is nearly quarter million dollars edwards received from two wealthy friends, if it was merely a personal gift or used illegally for his campaign. >> one of the things the jurors are told to do is to look at the intent of the donor. and what they did was asked for all of the documents that might give them insight to that. >> reporter: the jurors must decide six charges against edwards, including conspiracy, accepting illegal campaign transactions and-- contributions and making false statements. >> reporter: the 56-year-old former presidential candidate waits in a private area, away from the media camped in the courtroom, and on the steps outside. >> reporter: on wednesday night, he did take in a local baseball game with his daughter, a few blocks away, at grasshopper stadium. in greensboro, north carolina, manuel gallegus, wjz eyewitness news. >> edwards faces prison time and a significant fine if convicted. an ohio teenager, accused in a deadly school shooting will be tried as an adult. kai is in the newsroom with more on the decision a judge

made. >> it j lance wassine-- tj lance was seen in court for the first time in a month. three students were killed. two others hurt. lane is facing several murder and attempted murder charges. also at today's hearing are a police officer testified that lane admitted killing the victims, but didn't know why he did it. denise? >> thank you, kai. if convicted, lane faces a maximum sentence of life in prison without patrol. unabomber ted kaczynski can't attend his 50th reunion at harvard. he graduated in 1952 and is currently if prison. convicted of killing two people and injuring 23 in a nationwide bombing. he was sentenced to eight life sentences. a vial of president ronald reagan's blood is no longer up

for sale. a european auction house canceled the sale today. the vial was taken after an assassination attempt. the unknown seller now plans to donate it to the former president's foundation. more help is coming to military members who find themselves struggling to keep their homes. new legislation protecting them from foreclosure. >> reporter: from fighting overseas to battling another war back home, military members hit hard by the housing crisis. >> service members, while they were on the battlefield, fighting. they were getting messages, e- mails from their wives, saying that we're about to be put out. >> reporter: maryland congressman elijah cummings couldn't believe how many soldiers were losing their homes. so he created the military family home protection act. >> we thought there was a better way, that america is better than that. >> reporter: the new legislation will prevent soldiers from being foreclosed on, while they're deployed and

for up to a year after. previously, they only had nine months. a bill just passed in the house by an overwhelming margin. >> it's going to give the chance for the service member to sort of work through the process. and hopefully that process will be to save the houses and get their sort of finances in order. >> reporter: the new legislation would also expand protection to surviving spouses of military members killed overseas and to veterans who have been declared 100% disabled. >> reporter: the bill also cracks down on illegal foreclosures and protects soldiers from discrimination by banks. >> just seems like the right thing to do, in terms of ensuring they're protected, while they protect us. >> reporter: monique griego, wjz eyewitness news. >> a similar bill still has to go through the senate. once passed there, this new legislation will become law. congressman cummings is confident that is going to happen. the first african american to graduate from the u.s. naval academy has passed away. leslie brown started at the academy in 1945.

he ran track and cross country. in his honor, they recently constructed the wesley brown field house. brown graduated in 1949, and went on to have a 20-year career in the navy. he was 85 years old. with summer heating up, swimming safety is on the minds of men parents -- many parents. >> reporter: the cp sc is pushing for more free swimming programs in minority communities. and that is because research shows, african american children between the ages of 5 and 14, are three times more likely to drown than white children. the cpsc says learning basic water skills can save lives. experts say a child can learn basic swim as young as 4 months old. >> in harlem, the free swimming program started there 20 years ago. during the off season, some portions of the 2.5-mile long

boardwalk were reconstructed with new wood. it's just the first phase of renovations at the summer hot spots. along with the boardwalk, it will also feature fire works light shows, every night this summer. summer like heat this spring. mostly sunny. a bit humid out there today. wjz has weather and traffic. bob is here with the updated numbers from first warning weather. take a look at radar. we have one thunderstorm that has developed over cecil county. just one cell up there, just a little bit more activity just to the east of the cambridge and southern delaware as well. take a look at this one cell. there you go. elkton, northeast and charles town. it's heading up towards newark and northern persian -- portions of delaware. it will move out in the next hour or so. but brief, heavy downpours in that particular cell as you can see. the rest of the region, just

ground was hurt. and the federal aviation administration is investigating. new video in the release of a target security officer, who died after trying to take down a suspected shoplifter. mervyn bettis is charged with third-degree murder for the death of horn last year. the former fbi agent died after getting into a scuffle with bettis, who was caught trying to leave the store with merchandise. the heart attack was brought on by the struggle with bettis. a high-ranking church official takes the stand in his own defense. he is accused of taking in predator priests. >> reporter: monsignor william lynn said he had no option. including withholding information about why predator priests were moved out of their churches. >> did you or anybody you were associated with lie to

parishioners about why a police went off into the sunset? >> the cardinal wouldn't allow us in those days to say why someone was leaving. >> catholics answer only to the pope. lynn was in charge of investigating child sex abuse allegations against clergy for 12 years. today, lynn testified he did not have the power to transfer priests from church to church, telling a philadelphia jury he only had the authority to remove priests if they admitted to abusing someone. quote, every time you put the victims first, an assistant district attorney asked -- i believe in my heart, yes, the monsignor replied. >> his argument is that he was just following orders, that he couldn't do more than what he did. aren't we tired of that defense? >> first began investigating the archdiocese in 1992. >> whether monsignor lynn

endangered children, by not going to the authority, by telling the cardinal, look, if you're going to continue on this path, i need to leave here, i can't do this anymore. you can do it. i'm not going to do it. >> if lynn is convicted, he could face up to 21 years in prison. a u.p.s. driver in california is under arrest, accused of being a peeping tom. a woman said he snuck into her san diego home after making a delivery and watched her in the bathtub. the driver is expected to be arraigned tomorrow. in san diego, a violent shop shoplifting arrest. jessica kartalija has more on the shocking video, involving a 14-year-old girl. >> the video taken by a shopper, shows the girl being apprehended by two undercover security officers who work for nieman-marcus. >> help! >> san diego police say the girl was caught on camera, inside the store, stealing a $550 pair of cuff links. the man who shot this video

called ladoll cha vidda. the police chief is furious, as the video reveals what happens next. >> people are rifling through his pockets. and you know, looking for valuables. >> at one point in time, you can see he has a latch on it. >> one passerby even removes his shoes in an attempt to see if money is stashed in his socks. neighbors say it isn't unusual for this part of town. >> it's not uncommon to find people drunk under cars, getting rolled for their money. >> reporter: he's from before 2:30 in the morning, until after sunup, just after 6:00 a.m. without his watch, without his wallet. when a startled homeowner stops him. dials 911. and in a final indignancey, he calls 911. >> this guy was definitely taken advantage of. it's disgusting. >> reporter: police say the trespassing charge may be dropped. and some of the folks in the video may have legal problems

really feel like summer for the first time. three or four days in a row. where our temperatures are going to run, eight, 10, 12, 15 degrees above average. we're talking upper 80s to low 90s for the weekend. which is just in time for the holidays. so go out and stay cool. make sure your ac is working. let's take a look at radar. we have one thunderstorm around northeast. and just moving into elkton as we speak. approaching i-95 in the extreme northern sections of maryland and cecil is county. it's moving up to the north now around 10 miles an hour. heavy rain with that particular cell. that's about it. around the rest of the region, not a whole lot happening. a little bit of activity, south of that region, near chestertown. just north of chestertown. and also on the mason-dixon line there, over portions of eastern -- call it sussex county there. right there in southern delaware. the rest of the area, one cell dying out. and the rest in virginia as well. 81 degrees now. and the humidity is not as high as it's probably going to get this weekend.
