this is wjz tv, wjz hd, and wjz.com, baltimore. >> from the city to the counties to your neighborhood, now it's complete coverage. it's wjz, maryland's news station. a violent group of teenagers descend on a 7/11 store and make off with thousands of dollars. >> the growing concern over out of control teens downtown. hello, everyone. >> here's what people are talking about tonight. >> dozens oh of teens swarm a 7/11 on free slurpy day but they leave with much more. the store owner was attacked and robbed of $7000 in cash. >> reporter: a nationwide 7/11 free slurpy give away. >> it was a a lot of kids and

they were out of control. >> reporter: witnesses saw other kids raiding the candy shelf. >> they started grabbing things. i see them run out and i knew they didn't buy it. they ran that way, they ran that way. there were so many. >> reporter: a store manager blocked the door to keep the rest of the kids from leaving. those kids got so mad the door was blocked, they started punching the store manager. >> they started hitting that guy. he eventually let them out and they just ran. >> reporter: it's the latest example of large groups of young people creating problems this downtown baltimore. crowds of teens gathered in the inner harbor. >> we have a large, large group of juveniles. >> reporter: another group beat and robbed a tourist. cameras have spotted them

roaming the streets in november and caught fig fights on the 4th of july. >> i'm really appalled at the behavior of these teenagers. they're running rampant. where are the parents? >> reporter: they were all wearing yellow shirts and khaki pants. police trying to figure out what school they came from. >> baltimore police declined to be interviewed for the story. police are investigating three separate shootings in the span of a couple of hours. 7 people suffered gunshot wounds. two oh of them have died from their injuries. they're boosting patrols tonight. they don't know if they are linked. an aerosol can is to blame for a security scare. they spotted a vapor coming from a bag as they loaded the luggage. the fire marshall determined the

aerosol spray was not dangerous. a 9-year-old child is recovering after being attacked by a pit bull in his neighbor's yard. the boy was riding his bike when the dog, named big boy, latched on to his leg. the dog's owner the dog with a baseball bat to stop the attack. the boy is expected to be okay. the fight over the danger of pit bulls is raging on. causing problems for pit bull owners over the state. how animal advocates are fighting back. >> reporter: there are three petitions trying to override that appeal court ruling labeling pit bulls dangerous dogs. may recollect davidson may lose two members of his family. >> they're my children. >> reporter: his landlord told him, get rid of your pit bulls

or move out. >> everything's okay. come up and say hi. >> reporter: an appeals court deemed pit bulls vicious dogs and ruled landlords could be held liable if they bite. the ruling in response to the attack of a boy in 2007. >> this is sophiea choice. you're forced to give up your family and that's not fair. >> reporter: local animal shelters have seen an influx of pit bulls come in. >> we're always at capacity at our shelter. we take in over 11,000 animals a year. >> reporter: having trouble keeping up with the numbers coming in. they came together to discuss strategies for dealing with the aftermath of the ruling and ways to fight it. >> we want safe communities and breed discreme that toy laws don't do that. >> very attentive, very responsive, just wanted to cuddle on the couch with us and nap. >> reporter: he equates it to

racial profiling for dogs and his heart goes out to owners who could lose their best friends. so far, $10,000 has been raised to fight that appeals court ruling. reporting live for wjz eyewitness news. >> lawmakers have introduced four bills to override the decision. that could be discussed if a special second session is called this summer. nearly two thousand workers will be without a job in june. idle the steel mill indefinitely and lay off all employees starting june 4th. they're shopping around to potential buyers. their parent company bought the mill just 14 months ago. a father and his two sons are tragically killed in an eastern shore farming accident. they perished in a huge animal waste pit. despite efforts by neighbors and

rescue workers to save them. we have more on what happened. >> reporter: from above, you can see the large dark pit filled with animal waste. the pain staking search to find the bodies inside took hours. the three were pronounced dead at the scene. betty freeman is heartsick. >> i just can't imagine anything like that occurring, falling into a pond and drowning in that liquid manure. it's unthinkable. >> reporter: the mannite father and his two sons were experienced on dairy farms. they made the trek regularly. their family became alarmed when they didn't return home. calls to 9111 started an intense rescue effort. >> they were very well liked. there was every indication the victims may be this that manure pit. rescue operations started

immediately. it was about 20 feet deep, 150 feet across. farmers came from all over with their personnel and equipment and multiple fire departments, units have responded from maryland and delaware. >> reporter: it's unclear how they ended up in the manure pit. one of the children may have become trapped inside and his dad and brother died trying to save him. >> that's just a terrible tragedy. >> reporter: in kent county for wjz eyewitness news. >> police do not suspect foul play. the trainer of the horse that won the kentucky derby is suspended from racing, but it won't affect his horse's chances of winning the triple crown. he was cited after won of his

horses failed a blood test. five days and still no verdict. the jury in john edwards campaign trial asked for more evidence. edwards faces six counts of fraud for allegedly using campaign funds to hide his alleged mistress from his wife. they looked at more financial records and deliberations continue tomorrow. a fish kill is spreading. 10s of thousands of dead fish and crabs are floating at the surface. it's bad for the environment and bad for business downtown. wjz is live in canton. we look into what's causing the kill. >> reporter: the fish kill is bad and has far-reaching affects. sky high chopper 13 is high above a fish kill that's now seen in the inner harbor. it's a growing problem, being fed by algae blooms across the area which kill fish and other

aquatic life. >> we're putting our equipment into the water and saw juvenile craps trying to climb up the cables to get out of the water. >> reporter: a phenomenon called mahogany tide is killing fish. the problem started last year with run off from tropical storms. it carried loads of sediment carrying loads of nutrients. >> levels oh you have oxygen, 2-1 milliliter or lower which is troubling for aquatic life. >> reporter: it affects tourism, human health, and a variety of aquatic life. the fish kill is bad for business. >> right now it depends which way the wind's blowing.

>> reporter: experts say you can help protect the environment. cleaning up after your pet and making sure waste doesn't get into local waterways. homeowners can reduce fertilizer that can get into the chesapeake bay and affect aquatic life. blue water baltimore say citizens can express their concerns. more college grads are calling baltimore home and liking. best cities for college graduates. the pros of living here? income growth, waterfront-active night life, a subway system, and train access to d.c. coming up, danger in the laundromat. the warning about these tablets. a man stripped of his valuables and his clothes. why he didn't fight back. a major break in the case of a child missing for decades.
