york city home. police say they have a signed confession from pedro hernandez. it's still unclear what, if any, evidence officials have to prove hernandez's story. john miller has more. >> reporter: in 1979 pedro hernandez, then 18 years old, worked at his family's small grocery in the soho neighborhood just a block from where 6-year-old tan patz disappeared on his way to school. based on a tip, detectives from new york city drove to this small house in maple shade, new jersey, and brought hernandez to the police station. commissioner ray kelly announced the arrest. >> hernandez described to detectives how he lured young etan from the school bus stop, led him into the basement of the bodega, choked him there and disposed of the body by putting it into a plastic bag and placing it into the trash. >> reporter: police say hernandez was brought back to the scene of the crime where he

retraced his steps for investigators. prosecutors at manhattan district attorney's office are proceeding with caution. even with the confession, it will be difficult to corroborate hernandez's story, the story as given also leaves police no closer to knowing where to look for a body. the new twist comes just a month after the cold case drew headlines when police dug up the basement in a neighborhood where etan disappeared. that lead turned cold but the renewed publicity may have led to this break. >> the individual who gave us information came forward because of the recent notoriety on the case. >> reporter: hernandez had lived in new jersey since the early 1980s. his family members left his home under police escort without commenting. investigators say he was not a suspect at the time of the disappearance, but he did tell others about his crime. >> in the years following etan's disappearance, hernandez had

told a family member and others that he had, quote, done a bad thing and killed a child in new york. >> reporter: john miller, cbs news, new york. the hurricane bud now has strengthened into a major storm overnight as it turns toward mexico's pacific coast. bud is located about 150 miles southwest of manzanillo. expected to make landfall later today, stretching south from the popular beach resort of puerto vallarta. it has sustained winds of 115 miles an hour, a hurricane warning is posted for manzanillo northward. official atlantic hurricane season doesn't give until june 1st but government forecasts this season will be normal. 15 named storms are predcted, 4 to 8 will turn into hurricanes. one to three will turn into major storms. southwest new mexico two wildfires that merged destroyed a dozen homes and some other buildings. the fire has tripled in size,

over the last three days, burning more than 70,000 acres. some communities, voluntary evacuations are under way as many homes remain at risk. the world's first private spaceship is scheduled to dock with the international space station later today. the unmanned spacex dragon capsule rendezvoused with the station yesterday. navigation and communication has gone as planned. the crew will use the robotic arm to reel in the capsule. the capsule is carrying 1,000 pounds of supplies. politics now. the campaign rhetoric is ratcheting up. president obama and mitt romney are escalating their criticism of each other as they make their case in key battleground states. susan mcginnis is in washington with more. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, terrell. iowa is one of those swing states. president obama is hoping for a replay of 2008 when iowa really helped launch him to the presidency. he's stepping up his attacks on mitt romney who was hitting the air waves in iowa and fighting back. mitt romney went to school in philadelphia, continuing his

week-long focus on education. >> we allow more choice for parents. i like every parent to have a choice and every child to have a chance. >> reporter: but he faced a tough crowd. teachers from the urban charter school criticized governor romney's education proposals and his assertion class size doesn't matter. >> i can't think of any teacher. would you want more kids in your classroom? >> reporter: in a shift in strategy, the obama campaign is expected to go after romney's record as governor of massachusetts. during that time, romney made large cuts in education funding and the state's debt rose. it was a national debt romney used to attack the president. in des moines last week he said the president added an historic mount to the deficit. >> a prairie fire of debt is sweeping across iowa and across the nation. >> reporter: the president campaigned in des moines last night. >> his speech was more like a cow pie of distortion. >> reporter: he says romney's plan would add to the deficit. >> he hasn't told you how he

paid for a new $5 trillion tax cut. that's like trying to put out a prairie fire with gasoline. >> reporter: this is the president's second trip to iowa in a month and his campaign has poured more than $2.6 million in ads in this key swing state. romney has begun airing ads of his own there. >> day one, romney announces deficit reduction ending big government. >> reporter: he and the republican national committee plan to open a dozen or more offices in iowa. a new national poll shows romney with a key advantage in a statistic group, struggling middle class white voters. they say they chose romney as the one to best advance their economic interests. terrell? >> still a ways to go. susan mcginnis in washington, thank you. made for a turbulent day for overseas markets. tokyo's nikkei indexed gained a fraction but finished down for the week, marking its worst losing streak in 20 years. while hong kong's hang seng added about 0.25%. early investors in facebook may be getting their money back. morgan stanley, the lead bank in facebook's initial public offering, will reportedly compensate shareholders who overpaid during last friday's ipo. some investors didn't know how much they were paying early friday because of a technical glitch at the nasdaq. morgan stanley hasn't said how much the deal would cost. facebook shares are still down about $5 from their opening price. on wall street blue chips posted a gain for just the fourth time this month. the dow added 33 points while the nasdaq lost 10. time is running out for lawmakers to keep a key student loan interest rate at current level. last night the senate defeated two measures, one backed by each party to extend the rate on stafford loans.

without congressional action that rate will double in july. one of the nation's oldest snups is slowing its presses. starting in the fall the new orleans "times-picayune" will only publish three times a week but will publish online daily. but new orleans will be the largest city in the u.s. without a daily newspaper. a video game company owned by former star curt schilling has struck out. 38 studios laid off its entire 300-person staff on thursday. the company received a $75 million loan to move to rhode island in 2010. if the company goes under, rhode island could be responsible for some of its debt. and if you work for ibm, you could have an iphone, but you can't use siri. the voice-activated system is banned on ibm-issued cell phones. a company executive says because ibm has no control over how the

former high school football star is free, exonerated of raping a classmate more than a decade ago. he spent more than five years in prison but his name was cleared thursday after his accuser aditted she lied. lee cowan has the story. >> petition is granted -- >> reporter: at the end of brian banks' reveal marks a year after a judge threw out a rape charge that had sent him to prison for more than five years. >> my only dream in the world was just to be free and to have the same opportunity as everybody here. >> reporter: he was a 16-year-old star linebacker with a full ride scholarship to usc and a dream to play in the nfl when in 2002 a classmate accused banks of raping her in the stairwell of their long beach high school. although banks insisted it was consensual and there was no sex, he told kcbs-tv that his defense attorney gave him a choice, plead no contest to rape or risk

trial that could send him to prison for life. >> you go into that courtroom, the jury is going to see a big, black teenager and you're automatically going to be assumed guilty. those were her exact words. >> reporter: he took the deal, went to prison and had to register as a sex offender. he thought that was the end of it. after he was released came a surprise. a friend request on facebook from his accuser, wanetta gibson. >> i remember closing the laptop like real quick like thinking, like, what did i just see? >> reporter: banks arranged a meeting with a private investigator. who videotaped the whole thing. gibson later explained she hadn't wanted to say that publicly for fear of losing a $1.5 million settlement her family had gotten after suing the school district. >> i may never get the answer as to why i went through what i had to go through, but i know that i'm here today and i remain unbroken. >> reporter: unbroken and working to get his life back on track. those dreams of playing in the
