i'm kai jackson. mary is off. here's what people are talking about. it is a hot one out there today. a heat advisory is in effect for parts of maryland until 9:00 tonight. people are enjoying a holiday cookout, but staying under these trees to try to stay cool. meanwhile, this man is creating some cool by rocking back and forth in a hammock. bob turk is here with more on how hot it is. >> as you mentioned, an advisory. take a look at the graphic. much of maryland and d.c., under heat advisory. means take it easy. until 9:00, if you're out this evening, take it easy.

try to stay in the shade. right now, temperature in the low 90s. when you combine that with a dew point in the low to mid- 60s. baltimore now feels like 94. d.c., 97. easton, 98. even at the beach, it feels like 93 degrees. oakland, not too bad, only 80 degrees. come back and take a look at the rest of the forecast in a few minutes. >> tropical depression beryl is soaking parts of the southeast now, ruining memorial day services and beach vacations. first warning weather coverage continues. randall pinkston reports for wjz, thousands are without power. >> reporter: crews fought strong winds to put up storm flags in jacksonville, warning people to stay out of the water. the beaches in northeast florida and southern georgia are usually packed on memorial day. but this year, many are shut down. beryl hit the coast, early monday morning, with winds 70 miles an hour. and torrential rains. roads in low-lying areas are flooded, with a time to stop traffic.

the surf was strong enough to break up parts of this dock. powerful waves also sent this boat crashing into nearby walls. the winds knocked out power. and tens of thousands were without electricity. beryl weakened by the afternoon. and people went out to see what the storm left behind. jacksonville's mayor is warning residents to stay close to home. it's feared beryl's outer bands could bring more winds and possibly tornadoes. >> if you don't have to drive, please don't drive. don't go out into the water. >> reporter: but this storm does have a silver lining. beryl is moving further inland, bringing rain to a region that suffered through a long drought. >> we could see widespread 5 to 10-inch rain. so in some respects, that would be some good news, despite the washout for the holiday weekend. >> the remnants of beryl are expected to head back to sea. bringing rain to the carolinas. randall pinkston, wjz

eyewitness news. >> hurricane season doesn't officially start until friday. could beryl affect ocean city's beaches in the next few days? let's go back to bob turk, who is tracking the storm in first warning weather. bob? >> take a look at radar. look over northern florida. north of jacksonville. southern georgia. that's where the center of this low was. it was a tropical storm at one point. it's now a tropical depression. get a new report at 5:00. it continues to weaken. but you see that track going on through southern georgia. may head out towards southern portions of south carolina, then out to sea. take a look at the tracking we have. take a look at the computer real quick. there we have it going out to sea. by friday, it's way off in the atlantic ocean. its closest impact to maryland may be 300 miles away. could cause some rough surf there. that's about all we're expecting out of it. a new report can be coming in about the next hour or so. we'll probably update it for you. even 11:00, winds sustained only at 40 miles per hour.

wars because a strong america is the best deterrent to war there has ever been invented. >> since the september 11th terror attacks, some 6400 men and women have died defending the u.s. >> reporter: at the white house, tara mergener, wjz eyewitness news. >> a new gallop poll shows americans lining up behind mitt romney. of those surveyed 54% said they other than supporting romney. an officer pulled lamel osbee over early sunday morning, for driving the wrong way on oak ford avenue. he fell out of the car, suffering several gunshot wounds before he died at the police. he told police he had been shot on edgecomb circle but did not know who shot him. wjz speaks to his family coming up all new tonight at 5:00 and 6:00. baltimore county police, trying to track down two armed suspects who shot a man ask stabbed a woman inside a

dundalk home. derek valcourt has more on the latest on the investigation. >> reporter: the gunshot victim is in critical condition here at shocktraum a. he was one of four people inside the house when the two robbers broke inside. we talked to one woman who was also in the house. she told wjz all about her frightening ordeal. >> it's pure pain. it's hurting bad. i'm scared to death. >> reporter: sunday morning took a terrifying turn for sharon. she asked not to reveal her last name. but she was visiting her daughter's house, at 705 aldword road, when two men busted through the back door, shouting. >> baltimore city police, baltimore city police, and came running up the steps with a gun. and had it on me and her. and the one behind him had the knife. >> reporter: the robber stabbed her 28-year-old daughter amy and shot her 30-year-old boyfriend justin. the robbers kept saying, where is the money and demanded their

cell phones. >> the one saw me. and he lunched at me with the knife. and my daughter amy got in between us and said, no, you ain't stabbing my mother. and she got in between us. but i think that's how she get stabbed. >> reporter: neighbors reported seeing the suspect run out of the house, down an alley and into a getaway car. sharon can only describe the two suspects as tall, thin, african american men. >> all dressed in black, with a bandana. and all you could see was this right here. >> reporter: the home invasion happened in an area packed with little kids, leaving neighbors appalled. >> it makes you worry for the safety of our children. >> i hate to hear this happen right here. >> it makes me think twice about locking our doors and windows. >> i want them caught. so they don't do it to nobody else. >> reporter: police say the shooting victim is in critical condition here at shock trauma, he is expected to survive. the woman who was stabbed will also survive her injury. derek valcourt, wjz eyewitness news. >> the couple who lives in that home have one daughter.

she was staying with a relative at the time of the home invasion. a baltimore county man was struck and killed in ocean city. police say diego fachinny was speeding early monday morning when he was hit -- when he hit matthew cheswick from cooksville. of witnesses followed him until police arrived and arrested him. he is charged with homicide by motor vehicle while intoxicated. he is awaiting arraignment in court. let's check on the traffic with christy breslin at wjz -- kristy breslin at wjz traffic control. let's take a live look. as you can see, that is 50 westbound, at the kent narrows. and it continues all the way to the bay bridge. we also have a lot of delays on 404. traffic is just packed there. from old trapp e road to east. let's take a look at our graphic here. northbound 95. we have slowing there from 395

a sticky 92 degrees and hot in central maryland right now. the complete first warning weather forecast coming up. on this memorial day, police in

tennessee are looking for the suspects who broke into a vfw hall. take a look at surveillance video, showing three men, using a sledgehammer to break through the back door of a hall in johnson city. the men stole an undetermined amount of cash and caused thousands of dollars in damage. with gas prices still around $3.50 a gallon around the country, a lot of drivers call it real highway robbery. cheryl atkison reports for wjz, the target is your bank card. >> i had $2300 in the bank. and it said i only had a thousand dollars in there. >> reporter: police say this man is suspected of stealing young's debit card number and going on a shopping spree. he allegedly used it four times at target, wal-mart and macy's. >> reporter: detective eric londommia said the trick was

how the thief got the numbers without having their cards. >> a they all use their cards at gas stations. >> this is a skimming device, bought illegally online for $200. hacker greg evans showed us how a crook can use a popsicle stick and super glue to attach the skimmer. >> first thing is to line it up here so it goes in evenly. this way, the person doesn't even know when they're sliding their card in. the person thinks, they're pumping gas and everything is fine. but in actuality, someone stole their credit card. >> reporter: the real skimmer can look seamless. >> how many credit card numbers can a small skimmer hold? >> about 1,000 credit card numbers. >> i was really angry. very, very angry. >> reporter: police caught the suspect and said just last

warmer, but not excessive. north winds at 5. very light winds. barometer holding steady. 29.94 inches. 74. i'll take that in oakland. 92, up the mountain, down the valley. 92 in cumberland. 88, hagerstown. we're at 92. ocean city did justin just jump up to 85. they've gotten out a west wind, not from the ocean. most of the weekend, it's been an east wind off the ocean. easton now at 90 degrees. once again, dew point in the 60s. 86, bel air. 87, rock hall. the cool spots down by the bay. low 80s, annapolis and kent island. these temperatures, we do have actually a heat advisory. baltimore, d.c. areas, until 9:00 tonight. north of us, around the philadelphia area, they have excessive heat warning. a little higher temperatures and higher dew points mean it's a little more uncomfortable, a little more dangerous out there. light winds out there. very light. except d.c., easton. there is a bit of a breeze down closer to the water, i guess.

to the south of us, that's beryl. it came ashore last night. as a pretty strong tropical storm. it's now a much, much weaker, tropical depression, bringing a lot of rain to those folks. got some thunderstorm activity to our region. not much to the west, but there's a front to the northwest of us. it will bring you thunderstorms. and behind it, it will get significantly cooler here for wednesday, thursday, and the end of the week. nothing much going on around here. showers across the carolinas. just a few very widely scattered pop-up showers in the mountains tonight. really don't expect anything here. but the humidity stays here until that front gets through. that probably really won't happen until early wednesday. and then cooler and less humid by the end of the week. we'll be only in the 70s. yeah, no more 90s. south winds on the bay, 10 to 15. the bay temp, look at that, jumped up to a very pleasant 73 degrees. tonight, then, partly cloudy, warm. a low in the upper 60s. maybe 65 in some suburban areas. tomorrow, another hot one and humid.

hello. thanks for staying with eyewitness news. i'm denise koch. and here's what people are talking about. international outrage is building after a weekend massacre in syria. as monica villamizar reports for wjz, united nations kofi annan is calling on everyone in the country to lay down their arms. >> reporter: activists say this video proves the violence in syria has not stopped. the amateur footage shows what is believed to be renewed shelling in the city. holmes. it comes after friday's massacre in the western city of hula, killed dozens of people. dozens dead were children under the age of 10. >> the events were horrific, atrocious, really. i expect that with the international community, the pressure will mount. >> reporter: but the president says force will only be discussed if diplomacy fails.

they hope diplomacy will solve the crisis. she demanded an investigation into the massacre. >> those responsible for these brutal crimes must be held to account. >> reporter: world leaders are blaming president bashar assad's troops. >> syria to descend into an even bloodier situation and into full-scale civil war. >> reporter: u.n. workers wear body armor. locals give them reports of first hand violence. but many say the monitors are overwhelmed by the magnitude of the conference. monica villamizar, wjz eyewitness news. >> friday's massacre is one of the deadliest single events against president assad's rule. armed men executed entire

families. here in maryland, and across the nation today, of course, people are remembering american heroes who paid the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. [ [ "taps" ] >> president obama laid a wreath at the tomb of the unknowns. he said the country must strive to, quote, be a nation worthy of your sacrifice. and from arlington national cemetery, to westminster, maryland, the emotional tributes. mike schuh has more from carroll county. in westminster, maryland, generations have come to know exactly what is going to happen on main street. on the last monday in may. >> 145 years. >> what does it say about westminster? >> westminster, as much as we grow, we can still be a small

town. >> reporter: big enough to line a mile at main street. small enough that the home street can get a delivery during the parade. >> it shows that we have a country that cares about their veterans. >> reporter: back when the first national memorial day was called decoration day, westminster participated. >> how did this all come about? it's 1868. and the mayor's daughter, tells them to go cut flowers from their garden. they walk over and lay them on the graves of civil war soldiers here in westminster. >> reporter: so whether this is your 30th parade, or like mike from ellicott city, your first -- >> it's deserving. i never got it in '69 and '70 when they come home. >> times change. our country no longer blames the individual soldier for the decisions made in washington. and all those who donned a

uniform are thankful. >> this country is thankful for this. >> why not? everything we stand for is a holiday. >> after the parade, the city hosted a half dozen emotional events to mark memorial day. another positive milestone for the georgia grad student who is fighting a rare flesh- eating bacteria. the father of -- aimee copeland said she began talking for the first time. she was infected after a zip line accident. the disease cost her both legs, a right hand and foot. although not unheard of, it is unusual to be this hot this early. pools across the region are very busy, as you can see, in druid park. if you are going out, be sure to stay hydrated and stay safe if you can. bob turk is in the first warning weather center.

tracking these conditions. >> people are not used to this kind of heat early this season. take a quick look at radar. we have one thunderstorm around the cumberland area. moving up to the north slowly. there is locally heavy rain in western portions of allegheny county. that's about it for our region. the advisory will be in effect until 9:00 tonight. that's for the baltimore area, and the d.c. suburban areas as you can see. an advisory simply means they want you to take it easy. to the northeast of us, philadelphia area. acts as excessive heat warning. duplicate is higher. and the temperature, dew point combination makes it feel warmer than it really is. our area right now, we're looking at 92 degrees. 81 in oakland. 90 in cumberland. but when you combine that with a dew point of 65, it feels more like 94 here. 81 in oakland. 97 cumberland. and easton in 98. very, very moist. on the eastern shore. we've got a lot of relief headed our way. we'll talk about that coming up. well, they risked their

lives, making sure swimmers stay safe this holiday weekend. they are members of the ocean city beach patrol. unseasonably warm weather and inviting surf has already led to several rescues. >> reporter: from the moment they hit the sand, it is a good morning on the ocean city beach. and for visitors, it's going to be a safe one as well. >> he's bleeding, right? >> nothing about this job is easy. lifeguards are constantly on alert. and the training seems endless. >> in ocean city, we have two seasons. so we're used to it. >> lieutenant ward covacs is in charge of that. most of his are college students on summer break who call this job fun. >> i get excited that i can be the one who is saving someone's life. i want to be that person. that's why i signed up for beach patrol. >> reporter: ocean city beach patrol doesn't officially hit the sands until this winter.

but last week, they pulled five people out of the -- people out of the water. one was a 5-year-old girl. >> wewe had some foe far out we had to send the coast guard boat to get them. >> reporter: summer season is about to heat up. >> that's my favorite time of year to watch it take all fruition as the guards take the stand for the first time of the year. >> ocean city beach patrol says it has one request of swimmers. keep your feet in the sand until the lifeguard is in the stand. some people are home from the road. let's check on the traffic control. >> major problems out there, 50 westbound. we have a live camera there. let's take a live look. you can see, we have an accident there. 50. all lanes are blocked. as you can see, traffic is barely moving. just a moment ago, we had a couple of people standing outside their vehicles. so we'll keep you up to date as that progresses. also trouble out there. 50 westbound, at 404.

leaders in kenya now say terrorists are behind a powerful explosion that ripped through a shopping building this afternoon. the blast injured at least 33 people, some of them seriously. police say one of the victims claims a bearded man left a bag outside her store, shortly before the explosion. kenya's prime minister is blaming the attack on an islamic militant group, based

flames ripped through the 100- year-old home. firefighters were injured and were treated at a nearby hospital. a fire marshal suggests a lightning strike started this fire. more and more children are getting sick eating laundry detergent packages, confusing them with candy and other goodies. david highfield showsuous it can be looking like candy to toddlers. >> i have a toddler and he was boeverything. >> reporter: in fact, during our interview, her son jayden was looking at the brightly colored lawntdry pack-- laundry packeltless. doctors around the country say kids are confusing them for candy. >> these are highly concentrated. and children ingest them and have almost immediate episodes of vomiting. >> reporter: the pittsburgh poison center says 10 kids from our area have gotten sick from eating laundry packelts, nearly

250 nationwide. none of the kids here wound upon in the hospital. but a 17-month-old in philadelphia was hospitalized for a week. >> when they bite into them, we think sometimes they get sometimes droplets aspirated into their lungs. and as a consequence, some children have had breathing difficulty. >> reporter: the packets debuted as an alternative to liquids and messy spills. all purex and tides have warnings on the back. choking hazard, keep out of the reach of children, may be harmful if swallowed. >> we have information today that tide is going to put their product in a child resistant container to try to prevent some of these from occurring. >> although children have been sickened, no fatalities are reported. millions of americans travel this holiday weekend. one lawmaker want airlines to make it easier for parents to sit with their children.

they are calling for airlines to give parents with children priority. airlines say they can't guarantee adjacent seats unless they pay -- book early or pay more. anniversary is being marked with a huge celebration. [ gunshots ] >> reporter: the golden gate bridge is 75 years old. a milestone celebrated with a spectacular fireworks show over san francisco bay. californians paid tribute to the state's most iconic architectural structure with the weekend activity and events. and you didn't even have to cross the span to get in on the fun, thanks to a special effects souvenir snapshot. >> how did it feel to dangle off the golden gate bridge.

was it kind of scary? >> yeah. >> reporter: thousands of tourists and bay area residents took part in a ceremonial hike or bike ride across the 1.7- mile span. what is it about walking across bridge? >> it's a very memorable day for me. it's 75th. and i remember my daughter was 2 years old on the 50th. >> and did you walk across that day? >> yeah. yeah. >> it took almost four years to build the bridge at an estimated current cost of $1.2 billion. the golden gate's famous dark orange color was not the first choice. it was originally used as a primer, but the designers decided stick with it. and it became known as international orange. parts was bridge were given a touchup for its 75th anniversary. and now, bay area residents are already planning the 100th anniversary festivities for their beloved landmark.

well, here we go. the summer of 2012 has begun. >> we wanted summer for memorial day. you got it. >> that's right. >> great afternoon for a crab cake cookout. stay in the shade. keep hydrated. we have one thunderstorm over northwestern, allegheny county. it's been sitting there. we have had over an inch of rain. and that's why they have issued a flash flood warning for the next few hours for that region. just from frostburg up to the mason-dixon line. and from barrelville to fin's alley on the allegheny and garrett county line. that's in effect right now. around here, it's pretty quiet. except the temperatures are pretty warm. 92. dew point actually is not as

bad as it could be. 65 degrees. 41% humidity. north winds at 5. barometer holding steady. right now, 81 in oakland. 90 cumberland and d.c. ocean city did jump up to 85. generally in the 70s. but they have a west wind now off the land. and of course, that is a hot, dryer wind. 89 degrees now in pax river. locally, temperatures in the upper 80s to low 90s. much cooler by the bay. kent island, annapolis, only coming in at 82 degrees. once again, the advisory for the heat continues in baltimore, baltimore county, and a.a. county, into the d.c. area, including carroll county as well. light winds here. but they get a nice, southerly breeze. that's keeping the heat and humidity in here for one more day. then a big change late tomorrow night. this little spin right here, that is what we call leftover of beryl. it's basically a tropical rain storm. to the west of us, a strong

cold front with showers and storms. the bulk of the activity is going to pass to our north. but tomorrow night, into wednesday or early in the morning, we'll have a chance of thunderstorms here. in the meantime, pretty quiet around here. the front, however, behind it, has much cooler and dryer air. and that will be in the area, wednesday afternoon, begin to cool down. and wednesday night, really pleasant temperatures and conditions coming in. for the rest of the week, after wednesday, very comfortable. now, by friday, on friday night, this front is going to stall out. maybe another area of low pressure that could bring more showers friday night. but in the meantime, looks like very pleasant weather to come in the end of the week. south winds 10 to 15 on the bay. bay temp around 73 now. 69 tonight. partly cloudy. warm and humid. tomorrow, again, around 90, 91. but look out for scattered thunderstorms in the afternoon. a better chance tomorrow night. and this could bring you brief gusty winds and heavy downpours tomorrow night. >> thank you, bob. still to come on eyewitness
