temperatures in the low 90s, upper 80s. but we do have that advisory in effect, until 9:00 tonight. that store, it's a heat advisory to our north and northeast. around the philadelphia region, it's actually an excessive heat warning. that's in that region. a little hotter, humid. we're at 92. 81 in oakland. but with a dew point at 65. the 92 degrees feels more like 94; over in eastob, feels like 98 degrees. so we'll be probably cooling off only into the upper 60s and low 70s tonight. and looks like any showers tonight will be few and far between. denise? >> thank you, bob. we're also closely tracking beryl and its impact on the southeast. the tropical depression is bringing soaking rains and ruining holiday plans along the coast. randall pinkston reports for wjz, with a look at the damage. >> reporter: crews fought strong winds to put up flags in jacksonville, warning people to stay out of the water. the beaches in northeast florida and southern georgia are usually packed on this day.

but this year, many are shut town. berim hit the coast, early monday morning, with winds up to 70 miles per hour. and torrential rains. rains and low-lying areas are flooded. the surf was strong enough to break up parts of this dock. powerful waves also sent this boat crashing into a nearby wall. the winds knocked out power. and tens of thousands do not have electricity. holiday parades and events across northeast florida have to be canceled. ber yil weakened by the afternoon, and people went to see what the storm left behind. >> reporter: jacksonville's mayor is warning residents to stay close to home. it's feared it could bring more bands and possibly tornadoes. >> if you don't have to drive, please don't drive. don't go out into the water. >> reporter: but this storm does have a silver lining. beryl is moving further inland, bringing rain to a region that suffered through a long drought. >> we could see widespread 5 to 10 inch rain. so in some respects that, would

actually be good news, despite the washout for the holiday weekend. >> reporter: the remnants of ber yil are expected to head out to sea late tuesday, bringing rain to the carolinas. randall pinkston, wjz eyewitness news. >> hurricane season officially starts on friday. but ber yil is already the second named storm of 2012. so let's check in again with bob turk, for more on beryl's path and the potential in maryland. >> right now, take a look at what is left of ber yil. extreme southern georgia. that extreme spin to about savannah. it's moving very slowly now and to the north and northwest. take another look at the tracking of it. it has weakened considerably. winds down about 30 miles an hour. and we expect it to head, believe it or not, going to head back out, toward the east over the atlantic. eventually thursday and friday. it's going to pass probably east of maryland. maybe 300 miles by thursday morning. it could cause some slightly higher surf at the beaches here

by that time. looks like it's going to be too far out. and too weak by that time. it may regenerate somewhat once it gets over the gulf extreme. but right now, it's a downfall to our weather. we have cooler weather headed our way after tomorrow. >> thank you, bob. and stay with we'll for first warning weather. to find updates and doppler, log onto wjz.com. a chilling man in baltimore. a young man shot in his car dies crying for help. >> the family and police, 92 neither one of them have good information on this case. we don't even upon if the victim here was targeted or killed by random violence. >> reporter: 22-year-old22-year- old lamel osbee was supposed to be turning 21 this weekend. but instead, his parents are planning a funeral. >> he did not deserve to die. that was my only boy. my heart is saddened.

>> early saturday morning, osbee was driving in a dangerous area, where previous bullets scar an apartment complex. a witness tells wjz, new gunfire seemed to come out of nowhere. osbee hit the gas but got stuck in a dead end. he turned around and pulled out of the neighborhood. >> reporter: police pulled him over for going the wrong way down the street. when he stopped his vehicle, he fell out of the car, and his body was riddled with bullets. he told police he had no idea who shot him. >> as of yet, we have no information. >> my son was a good guy. he never been in a fight. never had a quarrel with anybody. no enemies. >> reporter: lamel's parents also say their son held a steady job and he was deciding if he should finish college or join the navy. >> unbelievable what my husband and i and our family and friends are going through. but what we don't want is anybody to retaliate in a negative way.

i don't want another parent to feel what we're feeling. we want the law to handle it. and then we know that god has the last say of all. >> osbee was pronounced dead at sinai hospital. we have checked. he didn't have anything serious on his criminal record. tonight, it's unclear what he was doing in that neighborhood to begin with. reporting live, adam may, wjz eyewitness news. >> adam, thank you. anyone with information should call metro crimestoppers. you can remain anonymous. a hollywood man is killed by a drurchtion driver in ocean city. police say 30-year-old diego fachinny. he is facing several charges by homicide. police have identified the victim as 22-year-old matthew ches wick of cooksville. he died at the hospital. police are searching for two men who forced their way into a dundalk home, shooting a man inside and stabbing his

girlfriend. wjz is live at shock trauma, where one of the victims is recovering. derek valcourt has more on this violent home invasion. >> denise, we spoke with one of the women who was inside that home, when two robbers barged in armed with a gun and a knife. >> i was scared to death. >> reporter: her name is sharon. and though she would not share her last name, she did share the story of what happened inside her daughter's home, alt 705 in dundalk. that's when two masked robbers broke into the house through the back door, identifying themselves as police officers. >> came running up the steps with a gun. and had it on me and her. and the one behind him had the knife. >> she said the robbers were demanding money. but the violence began when she tried to call 911. the robbers stabbed her daughter's boyfriend and her daughter. >> she threw herself in frojtd

baltimore county police. america's fallen heroes are being remembered in memorial day ceremonies around the country. president obama joined military leaders at arlington national cemetery to honor the war dead at the tomb of the unknowns. and in maryland, dozens gathered for one of the oldest memorial day celebrations in the country. mike schuh reports from westminster, where veterans received a warm welcome on main street. >> reporter: in westminster, maryland, generations have come to know exactly what is going to happen on main street on the last monday in may. >> 145 years. >> what does it say about westminster? >> westminster, as much as we grow, we can still be a small town. >> reporter: big enough to line a mile of main street. small enough that the hometown vets can get a special delivery during the parade. >> it's overwhelming. it shows that we have a country

city hosted a half dozen additional events to mark memorial day. financial troubles for former ravens star. according to our media partner, the baltimore sun, jamal lewis filed for a chapter 11 bankruptcy in baltimore, stating he owes about $10.5 billion to various companies. he helped lead the team to their only super bowl victory. the state of maryland takes center stage with two area schools going head to head for the national lacrosse championship in boston. sports director mark viviano joins us with highlights and reaction from loyola and maryland battling for the title. >> mighty maryland, big state school in college park. loads of experience taking on little loyola, baltimore. a school that has never won a national championship in any sport until today. >> maryland in the back. loyola in the gray. >> reporter: and a sea of green in the stands. a huge loyola contingent made the trip to massachusetts to witness history.

celebration. >> reporter: the golden gate bridge is 75 years old, a milestone celebrated with a sec spectacular fireworks show over san francisco bay. californians paid tribute to the state's most iconic architectural structure with a weekend of activities and events. and you didn't even have to cross the span to get in on the fun, thanks to a special effects souvenir snapshot. >> how did it feel like to dangle off the golden gate bridge? >> felt good. >> was it kind of scary? >> yeah. >> reporter: thousands of tourists and bay area residents took part in a ceremonial hike or bike ride across the 1.7- mile span. >> what is it about walking across this bridge? >> it's a very memorable day for me. it's 70 feet. and i remember my daughter was 2 years old on the 50th. [ laughter ] >> and did you walk across that day? >> yeah. yeah. >> reporter: it took almost four years to build the bridge,

beautiful day outside. it's hot. memorial day. >> this is exactly what most people ask for. >> it's a pretty hot afternoon. only by the water. by the bay in the ocean or the mountains. significantly cooler. take a look at temp the around here. 83. cumberland with rain. they have dropped to 83 degrees. 87. ocean city did get pretty warm today. but it's a little colder than most areas. we're at 91 now. d.c. just dropped to 89. locally, upper 80s, except 82 in westminster. clouds didn't see any shower activity on radar. 87, annapolis and kept island. and 86, rock hall. once again, the dew points in the mid-60s, which makes it feel a couple of degrees warmer than the actual temperatures. but not significantly warmer. it's not like we're talking about 100-degree heat index. south winds, except we have a

light north wind. i don't know why. southerly winds will keep us in the heat again tonight and tomorrow. until this front to the west of us, this front creating showers showers and storms across minnesota and wisconsin now, is moving across the great lakes. it will drag a cold front across our region late tomorrow night, early wednesday. ahead of it this warm flow continues out of the south. and that means more heat and humidity tomorrow. few more clouds in the afternoon. maybe a pop-up shower and tomorrow night, a better chance of a thunderstorm or two going through the area. this is what is left of beryl. winds around 70 miles an hour in georgia. for us, we have one storm in allegheny county did prompt a flash-flood warning. it's now moved into pennsylvania. although they still have some of the heavy runoff in some of the streams up there. it am -- a cluster of storms here. tomorrow, another warm, humid day. wednesday, late in the afternoon. things get much nicer.

he was last seen near howell point in kent county. a violent holiday weekend in chicago, more than 30 people wounded by gunfire. police say a 6-year-old girl was among those injured in the string of apparently unrelated shootings. in another incident, three men were shot when their party bus was riddled with bullets outside a party bar. there have been more than 67 homicides in chicago compared to this time last year. a story about corruption, power struggles and betrayal, reaches the top of the vatican. the pope's personal butler has been charmed with illegal possession of secret documents. allen pizzey reports for wjz, this may be only the beginning. >> reporter: there was no hint at pentecostal mass that pope benedict xvi [ inaudible ] as any pope in modern time. his personal butler, gabrielo, is cued -- accused of leaking

secret documents including papal correspondence to the italian press. benedict is said to be pained that he had been betrayed by someone so close to him. comfortable life his wife and children enjoy as that in vatican city. >> for cbs this morning, i'm allen pizzey, in rome. and vatican city police arrested him last week, after they found sensitive documents inside his apartment. police in new york city are attempting to track down remains of etan pates, now that someone has confessed to the 33- year-old murder. pedro hernandez told police that he placed the 6-year-old boy's body in a trash bag and left it in an alley. investigators are looking into log books. a plan that reducedded the number of bird strikes is coming under fire. the proposal is allowing them to kill half a dozen of the bird species.

environmentalists say the plan conflicts with a plan to restore the wetleft-hand habitats. the faa says the number has doubled since 2005. police are warning of a crime that pumps around the country. cheryl atkinson reports, the target is your bank card. >> i had 2300 dollars in the bank. and it said i only had $1,000 in there. >> reporter: police say this man is suspected of stealing young's debit card number and going on a shopping spree. he allegedly used it four times in two days at target, wal- mart, and macy's. detective eric londommia said the trick was finding out how the thief had gotten young's and other victims' numbers, without actually industrialing their cards. >> they all do use their cards at gas stations, which is unfortunately, a very common location for skimming devices. >> reporter: it has card

numbers on a memory chip. hacker greg evans showed us how a crook can use a popsicle stick and super glue to attach the skimmer. >> future thing -- first thing we have to do. this way, the person doesn't even know when they're sliding the card in. the person thinks he's pumping his gas and everything is fine. but in actuality, someone just stole his credit card. >> reporter: them didistration was done in aert -- demonstration was done in a matter of minutes. >> how many credit card numbers or debit card numbers can a small skimmer hold? >> about 1,000. 1,000 credit card numbers. >> i was really angry. very, very angry. >> reporter: police caught the suspect and say just last week, they charmed him with fraud, forgery and identity theft. >> and security experts say that skimming could be netting crooks as much as $3 billion a year in the u.s. gas prices are still on their way down.

prices dropped a few septs a -- cents a gallon over the weekend. easing tensions with iran, along with plenty of supply, continued to bring down the prices. here's a look at what we're paying for an average gallon of regular gas here in maryland. this time last month, it was $3.85. now it's down to $3.57. memorial day kicks off the summer barbecuing season. prices for chicken and steak are up by more than 5%. driving feed prices higher. and because of that, ranchers are raising fewer hogs and cattle. ticket sales for the baltimore grand prix are off and running. fans can now purchase them at the official event website, race on baltimore.com. the event showcases the stars of the indy racing league. it takes place labor day weekend, starting friday, august 31st, with preliminary rice racing and qualifying. tears and tugs are on the--

started falling. the aircraft plunged into san diego bay, just a few feet from a hotel. the pilot and passenger managed to walk away with minor injuries. crews recovered the plane. international mystery. two americans are being questioned after an irish exchange student is found dead inside a hotel room in tokyo, japan. the men were arrested after hotel workers found the 21-year- old woman unresponsive in her room. medical examiners say she had been strangled. one of the americans was reportedly inside that room with her. the u.s. embassy confirmed the arrest, but is not releasing any other information. well, international outrage is building after a weekend massacre in syria kills more than 100 people. united nations envoy kofi annan is calling on everyone with a gun in the country to lay down their arms. monica villamizar reports for wjz from london. >> reporter: activists say this

video proves the violence in syria has not stopped. the amateur footage shows what is believed to be renewed shelling in the city of holmes. it comes after friday's massacre in the western city of hula, killed more than 100 people. dozens of the dead were children, under the age of 10. >> the events in syria over the weekend are just horrific, atrocious really. i expect that the international community, the pressure will mount. >> reporter: but the president stopped military advisers set forth will only be discussed if this fails. kofi annan hopes diplomacy will solve the crisis. she demanded an investigation into the massacre. >> those responsible for these brutal crimes must be held to account. >> reporter: world leaders are blaming president bashar asad's troops and are warning the regime to respect the u.n.- brokered troops. >> there's not an interest for anyone in the world for syria

center. witnesses say bieber argued with a man, then struck him while the man was trying to photograph bieber and his girlfriend, selena gomez. the photographer called police, complaining of chest pain. he was treated and released from a nearby hospital. a big break in the search for a missing 22-year-old college student in louisiana. police say they found the bicycle belonging to mickey shunnic, about 30 miles from where she was last seen may 19th. shunnic was riding the bike home from a friend's house. two fishermen discovered it under a bridge. police say no other evidence was found at that site. a former catholic priest removed from the ministry over sexual abuse allegations now holds a job with the tsa. he now works as baggage screening. his conduct is under new scrutiny as a new lawsuit is filed. >> reporter: the security checkpoint between terminals d and e, at philadelphia international airport is a busy place. thousands, including lots of

kids, pass through here every day. and look who we found as one of the supervisors here. this is thomas harkins. until 2002, he was a catholic priest, working at churches across south jersey. but the diocese of camden removed him from ministry because it found he sexually abused two young girls. and now, in this lawsuit, a third woman is claiming she also is one of harkins' victims. >> what do you have to say about this lawsuit? >> i have nothing to say. >> reporter: the lawsuit filed in federal court against the camden diocese says quite a bit, accusing harkins of sexually abusing an 11-year-old girl in 1980 and 81. the lawsuit claims the abuse occurred 10 to 15 times while harkins was a priest, with one assault even occurring in his bedroom in the rectory. we asked if the traveling public should be worried. >> no, they shouldn't be?

>> the public should not worry, given your past? >> i have nothing to say. >> they should know who they're hiring. as public, we are screened through our underwear, getting on a plane. yet they hire a man like that? >> reporter: karen polesir, with the survivors network of those abused by priests, or s.n.a.p. believes hiring harkins is inappropriate. even though the tsa says he deals largely with luggage, not passengers. >> the tsa says all of its employees go through a criminal background check before they are hired but because these cases are so old, criminal charges were not filed. still to come tonight on wjz eyewitness news. police stop a car for driving the wrong way. and it turns out the driver had been shot numerous times.
