weekend but instead, they're planning a funeral. >> that was my only boy. my heart is saddened. broken. >> reporter: early saturday morning, osbee was driving in a dangerous area, where bullet holes scar an apartment complex. a witness tells wjz, bullets seemed to come from nowhere. osbee turned around and sped away. >> when he stopped his vehicle, he actually fell out of the car, right onto the road. his body was riddled with bullets. and he told police he had no idea who shot him. >> as of now, we have no idea who did it. not even a suspect. >> my son was a good guy. and he's never been in a fight, never had a quarrel with anybody, no enemies. >> reporter: lamel's parents also say their son held a steady job. and he was deciding if she should finish college or join the navy. >> unbelievable what my husband and i and our family and friends are going through.

but what we don't want is anybody to retaliate in a negative way. i don't want another parent to feel what we're feeling. we want the law to handle it. ask then we know that god has the last say of all. >> osbee was pronounced dead at sinai hospital. he didn't have anything on his record. anyone who saw anything can call crimestoppers and remain anonymous. a man is dead after being hit by an alleged drunk driver. police say 30-year-old diego fachinny didn't stop as he hit matthew ches nick. witnesses followed him until police arrived to arrest him. he is facing homicide by motor vehicle while intoxicated. chez wick is from cooksville, howard county. a hot holiday weekend leads to a heat advisory for our

areas. the advisory is in effect until 9 clock tonight. -- 9:00 tonight. and another great way to cool off in this heat, of course, is to go to a swimming pool. and that's exactly what these people did. i know that water had to feel good. >> i bet the water is warm, too. basically for the baltimore area west and d.c. suburban areas as well. it's an advisory. just means to take it over out there. our bodies basically are not quite used to it. temperatures at 91. dew point has come down to 64. 83 ocean city. and 88 in d.c. and when you combine that with the dew point, it feels like 93 out. a little higher out. and 95 in washington.

hot spot, easton. higher dew point there. feels like 98 degrees. we will cool down. we'll have that forecast coming up. >> all right, bob. and tropical depression beryl is currently soaking parts of the southeast. he's ruining memorial day services and beach vacations. our first warning weather coverage continues. randall pinkston reports tonight that thousands are without power. >> crews fought strong winds in jacksonville, warning people to stay out of the water. beaches are usually packed on memorial day. but this year, many are shut down. beryl hit the coast early monday morning, with winds up to 70 miles per hour. and torrent ral rains. roads in low-lying areas stopping traffic. the surf was strong enough to break up this dock. powerful waves also sent this boat crashing into a nearby wall. the wind knocked out power. and tens of thousands do not have electricity. holiday parades and events

across northeast florida had to be canceled. beryl weakened by the afternoon, and people went out to see what the storm left behind. >> reporter: jacksonville's mayor is warning residents to stay close to home. it is feared beryl could bring more wind and possibly tornadoes. >> if you don't have to drive, please don't drive. don't go out into the water. >> reporter: but this storm does have a silver lining. beryl is moving further inland, bringing rain to a region that suffered a long drought. >> we could see widespread 5 to 10-inch rain. so in some respects, that would be actually? good news, despite the washout for the holiday weekend. >> reporter: the remnants are beryl are expected to head back to sea sometime wednesday, bringing rain to the carolinas. randall pinkston, wjz eyewitness news. >> and of course, we're keeping a close eye on beryl. he has the latest on the storm. >> reporter: nice radar. north florida, georgia, showers and thunderstorms. you can see the activity.

jacksonville has picked up about 3 inches of rain today. but some areas for the thunderstorms moving through, have picked up those 4 to 5 inches at least. and there will probably be more as well. it's slowly moving off to the north. take a look at the latest tracking on beryl. it's going to move inland for a while and probably make a right turn, being forced out to sea, eventually by later tomorrow and by thursday, it's somewhere, maybe 300 miles east of the ocean city area. and moving quickly out to sea. and the pressure is coming up. we'll come back and take a look at our forecast. cooling coming our way. just a few minutes. >> all right. that sounds good, bob. thank you so much. and stay with wjz for complete first warning coverage. to find updates any time, log onto wjz.com. police are investigating two deadly accidents on maryland waters. this afternoon, the coast guard recovered the body of a man who disappeared near kent narrows. two other people were also hurt in that crash. and crews are still looking for

a man who never resurfaced after jumping from a boat into the chesapeake bay. he was last seen near howell point in kent county. men and women killed while serving our country are honored today at dulaney valley memorial gardens. today, pat warren explains, families continue to cope with the losses of families in the past 12 months. ♪ [ music ] >> reporter: six marylanders have fallen since memorial day 2011, including baltimore city firefighter aaron marchanti's father, major marchanti, killed by an afghan. >> last year, i was one of the guys firing thrup and he was here watching. >> reporter: as iceremonies like this one, at dulaney valley memorial gardens take place all over the country. >> the phrase, "all gave some, and some gave all," is a phrase all veterans know. >> reporter: army specialist ronald wildrick gave all.

was dedicated in 19 sketch, and reserved for marylander, killed in action. and of course, memorial day services are being held throughout the nation tonight. mooz muse -- ♪ [ music ] >> present arms. >> president obama laid a wreath at the tomb of the unknowns to commemorate memorial day. he said the country must strive, quote, to be a nation worthy of their sacrifice. well, they also risked their lives to make sure swimmers stayed safe this holiday weekend. they're members of the holiday beach patrol. and tonight, gigi barnett explains, that on -- unseasonably warm weather has led to several rescues. >> good morning. >> reporter: from the moment they hit the stands, it is a good morning on ocean city beach. and for visitors, it's going to be a safe one as well. nothing about this job is easy.

lifeguards are constantly on alert. and the training seems endless. >> in ocean city, we really have two seasons. we have summer and the other season, it's called getting ready for summer. we're used to it. >> lieutenant ward covacs is in charge of that training. most of his 180 are on break. >> i'm excited that i can be the one who is saving someone's life. i want to be that person. that's why i signed up for beach patrol. >> reporter: ocean city beach patrol doesn't officially hit the sand until this holiday weekend. but last week, rescue crews pulled five people out of the water. one of them was a 13-year-old little girl. >> we had one that was so far out, we had to send the coast guard boat to get them over 500 yards from shore. >> and this summer season is about to heat up. >> that's my favorite time of year to watch it come to fruition as the guards take the stand for the first time of the year. >> reporter: in ocean city, i'm gigi barnett, wjz eyewitness news. >> and the ocean city beach

patrol say its has one request of summers. here's the quote. keep your feet in the sand until the lifeguard is on the stand. two areas going head to head for the national lacrosse championship in boston. mark viviano joins us with more reaction of loyola battling for the title. >> loads of championship experience. against little loyola of baltimore. a school that has never won a national championship in any sport until today. >> reporter: maryland in the black. loyola in the gray. >> reporter: and a sea of green in the stands. a huge loyola contingent made the trip to massachusetts to witness history. early second quarter, the terps take a 3-2 lead on a goal by kevin cooper. but that's the last time maryland had the lead. in fact, it was the last time the terps even scored. loyola took over from there, led by fifth year senior, eric

it is sunny and 91 degrees. the complete first warning forecast is coming up. tonight, two people are recovering after they were stabbed and shot by would-be robbers inside their home in baltimore county. wjz is live in shock trauma, where one of the victims is now recovering. derek valcourt has more on the brazen home invasion. derek? >> denise, you're about to hear firsthand from one of the women who was inside that house when masked robbers barged in with a gun and knife. >> i was scared to death. >> her name is sharon. and though she would not share her last name, she did share

what happened inside her daughter's home, sunday morning, at 10:45. that's when two masked robbers broke into the house, identifying themselves as police officers. >> came running up the steps with a gun. and had it on me and her. and the one behind him had the knife. >> she said the robbers were demanding cell phones. and the violence began when she tried to kale 911. the robbers shot her daughter's boyfriend and stabbed her daughter amy. >> she threw herself and said, you're not stabbing my mother, you're not stabbing my mother. and i think that's how he got stabbed. >> reporter: the home invasion is upsetting to neighbors who say they're worried about crime in a community loaded with kids. >> it's scary. because you want to be able to let the kids go outside and play. or you can even be in your own house. it's very scary. >> we actually had another friend that lives down the

field in baltimore. and she has a home invasion. and now this. >> i don't know that it was drug-related but there's struggles everywhere. >> reporter: as for the robbers, police say they don't have much of a description to go on. >> i want them caught. so they don't do it to nobody else. >> reporter: we are told that the woman who was stabbed is expected to survive. and the man shot is still in critical condition here at shock trauma, where we are live. derek valcourt, wjz eyewitness news. >> anyone with information on this crime is urged to call baltimore county police. a former ranks star is face -- ravens star is facing serious final trouble. jamal lewis filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy, saying he owes approximate $10.5 million to various companies. jamal lewis is the first all- time leading rusher who helped lead the team to super bowl victory. police are warning that

crimes at pumps are happening all over the country. cheryl atkinson reports for wjz, the target is your bank card. >> i had $2300 in the bank. and it said i only had $1,000 in there. >> reporter: police say this man is suspected of stealing young's debit card number and going on a shopping spree. he allegedly used it four times in two days at target, wal-mart and macy's. detective mondommia says the trick was finding out how the thief had gotten young's and other victims' numbers without using their cards. >> they all do use their cards at gas stations, which unfortunately is a recurring problem for skimming devices. >> reporter: this is a skimming device bought legally online for $200. hacker greg evans who owns his own security firm, showed us how a thief can use a popsicle

skip and super glue to place the skimmer. >> first thing we have to do is line it up with the yet card. this way, the person doesn't know. the person thinks he's pumping his gas and everything is fine. but in actuality, somebody just stole his credit card. >> reporter: in demonstration was done in just a matter of a few minutes. the real scam artist can make the skimmer seamless and undetectable to customers. >> how many credit card numbers can a small skimmer hold? >> about 1,000 credit card numbers. >> i was really angry. very, very angry. >> reporter: police caught the suspect and said just last week, they charged him with fraud, forgery and identity theft. >> security experts say skimming could be netting crooks as much as $3 billion a year in the u.s. all right. summer of 2012 is here. >> it's here. >> officially or unofficially. >> not usually this hot in may. take a look at temps. still hot out there. but the humidity has dropped a

ooh, that's hot work out there today. >> chilly, chilly water. water temperature is only low 70s. it's got to be a lot nicer down there by the water. and temperatures out on the water, a lot nicer than away from the water. take a look at temperatures around the state right now. the coolest areas are down by the bay, yes. and the ocean. in maryland. in cumberland, just up the hill and down the valley, they're at 90 degrees. we're at 91. at last report, d.c. and patuxent, 88. elkton now 85. the dew point just came up to 68. it had been the low 60s. so our heat index is around the low to mid-90s. 86, kent island. 85, rock hall. bel air, only 84. and columbia, still at 91. south and southwest winds, kept the heat in the area today. and tomorrow. one more day of the hot temperatures. and then we'll see a risk of scattered showers and storms. then a front will come through the area. creating some pretty good rain now in minnesota. and portions of the great

lakes. that front will cross the great lakes, eventually getting into our region late tomorrow night. early on wednesday. they may create some scattered showers in the afternoon. and a better chance tomorrow night, with the front coming through behind it. there's a lot cooler and dryer air coming in from canada. the end of the week is going to be really nice. this little blurb down here of rain. that is beryl. very weak. tropical depression later tonight. it's going to be over southern georgia. eventually make it go out to sea. it may cause, if it gets any stronger, it could cause some rough surf along the east coast by thursday and friday, as it moves way out to sea. probably passing about 300 miles southeast of ocean city. but it will kick up swells, i'm sure. a few widely scattered showers. they will increase in coverage. front coming through the area. that's when we have a chance of seeing the scattered showers. but wednesday, late in the day, cooler and dryer air coming in through really nice through the

it is 6:29. 91 degrees and sunny in central maryland. good evening. thanks for staying with wjz. here are some of the stories people are talking about tonight. marking memorial day. president obama calls for more benefits for returning veterans. and his republican rival wants to keep them growing. the comments come as the two gives speeches, honoring the nation's fallen heroes. >> reporter: president obama marked the 50th anniversary of the vietnam war this memorial day, with a visit to the famous wall. >> you often blamed for a war you didn't start, when you should have been commended for serving your country. with valor. >> reporter: actor tom selleck, himself a vietnam-era navy veteran, led the ceremony. >> today, i join with you to

again dedicate myself to the memory of my friends, whose names are on this wall. >> reporter: in a day full of remembrance, the president also laid a wreath at the tomb of the unknowns at arlington national cemetery. >> these 600 acres are home to americans from every part of the country, who gave their lives in every corner of the globe. >> reporter: and the president is promising returning war veterans that they will get the benefits they deserve. the 9-year war in iraq is over and combat troops are supposed to be out of afghanistan by 2014. >> reporter: republican white house hopeful mitt romney was in san diego, attending a memorial service with senator john mccain at the veterans memorial center and museum. romney called to build a strong military. >> we choose that course for america, not just so that we can win cars -- wars, but prevent wars because a strong america is the best deterrent to war there has ever been.

>> reporter: since the september 11th attacks, some 6400 men and women have died defending the u.s. >> reporter: at the white house, tara mergener, wjz eyewitness news. >> a new gallup poll finds american veterans lining up behind mitt romney. a massachusetts politician is making headlines after shocking words. representative barney frank spoke at darkness commencement yesterday. he told an african american recipient of an honorary doctorate, quote, now you've got a hoody you can wear and no one will shoot you. the audience gasped. and some did chuckle. it appears he was referencing the trayvon martin incident. so far, frank has not commented on what he said. a corruption trail that reaches to the top of the vatican. the pope's personal butler has been charged with illegal possession of secret documents. tonight, allen pizzey reports for wjz, this could be just the

beginning. >> reporter: there was no hint at pentecostal mass that pope benedict xvi is facing perhaps the biggest crisis of any pope in modern time. his personal butter, pap low gab real is under investigation. accused of leaking secret documents, including papal correspondence to the press. this is at the highest levels of the church. benedict is said to be pained that he had been betrayed by someone so close to him. [ speaking in latin ] >> reporter: in his homily, hey noted that we must live by the spirit of unity and truth. the problem for the vatican is that truths which were supposed to remain secret are getex posed in -- getting exposed in fullsome glory. the journalist who published them said he obtained them from multiple sources but did not

pay anyone. in his years as butler, gabriel was privy to a lot of information. vatican watchers are questioning why a man described as extremely loyal and devout would risk his career and the comfortable life his wife and daughter enjoy as part of van can -- vatican city. i'm allen pizzey, in rome. >> and they arrested him last week after they found sensitive documents inside his apartment. a catholic priest removed from ministry over sexual allegations now holds a job at international airport. thomas harkins lost his job in 2002, working in south jersey, when the diocese found he abused two young girls. the tsa says all of its

employees go through a criminal background check. but since the cases are so old, charms were not filed. police say a woman was abtucketted, then set -- abducted, then set on fire, then shot. it happened when she and her boyfriend pulled into the garage of their home. the woman says her boyfriend didn't do anything to stop the attack. now police say he may not have wanted the child. they have him in custody. the woman is in serious condition. she and her child are expected to survive. this memorial day, we remember the men and women who serve in the military. and manuel gallegus reports for wjz, many veterans, returning from war, have injuries that aren't visible. hearing loss. and it can affect the rest of their lives. >> reporter: army veteran, rebecca nava, sometimes has trouble hearing her daughter. >> i have to be able to listen

to her. >> reporter: nava was often exposed to loud noises during her tour in iraq. >> from the weapons going off. you know, close or next to you. sirens going off. >> reporter: those noises left her with hearing loss and tinit us, a ringing in her ears. >> i'm trying to sleep, take a nap, concentrate on something. all you hear is the ringing. >> reporter: 60% of veterans, returning from iraq and afghanistan, have damaged hearing. >> the total number over the decade for the conflicts are 840,000 members with tinitus. and just over 700,000 with hearing loss, which are the number 1 and 2 disabilities. >> reporter: experts say training to prevent hearing problems needs to start as sudden as -- soon as a person enters the military. but ear protection can be inconvenient in combat. and some noises are so loud, protection won't help. >> we have army, navy, air force programs that are looking

celebrations in the country. mike schuh reports, where veterans received a warm welcome on main street. ♪ [ music ] >> reporter: in westminster, maryland, generations have come to know exactly what is going to happen on main street. on the last monday in may. >> 145 years. >> what does it say about westminster? >> westminster can -- as much as we grow, we can still be a small town. >> reporter: big enough to line a mile of main street. small enough that the hometown vet can get a special delivery during the parade. >> it's overwhelming. it shows that we have a country that cares about their veterans. >> reporter: back when the first national memorial day was called decoration day, westminster participated. >> how did this all come about? it's 1868. and the mayor's daughter, gathered some elementary school children and tells them to go cut flowers from their gardens. they walk over and lay them on the graves of civil war

an explosion rips through a shopping center in kenya, wounding two dozen people. smoke could be seen rising from the building as store items were scattered about. one witness said the explosion occurred shortly after a bearded man left a bag inside the building. investigators say there is no sign of terrorism and that it was likely caused by faulty electrical wiring. a century-old church in minnesota is destroyed by fire and several firefighters are injured, fighting that fire. four of them were taken to the hospital with nonlife- threatening injuries. the fire started in the attic and flared up while the firefighters were battling it from the inside. fire officials believe lightning was the cause. 75 years ago today, the very first cars drove across the golden gate bridge. and since then, more than 2 billion vehicles followed. tonight, teresa garcia reports for wjz, the anniversary is marked with a huge celebration. >> reporter: the golden gate bridge is 75 years old. a milestone, celebrated with a

spectacular fireworks show over san francisco bay. californians paid tribute to the state's most iconic architectural structure with a weekend of activities and events. and you didn't even have to cross the span to get in on the fun, thanks to a special effects souvenir snapshot. >> how did it feel like to dangle off the golden gate bridge? >> felt good. >> was it kind of scary? >> yeah. >> thousands of tourists and bay area residents took part in a ceremonial hike or bike ride across the 1.7-mile span. >> what is it about walking across this bridge? >> it's a very memorable day for me. it's 75th. and i remember my daughter was 2 years old on the 50th. >> and did you walk across that day? >> yeah. yeah. >> reporter: it took almost four years to build the bridge, at an estimated current cost of $1.2 billion. the golden gate's famous dark

with lacrosse. >> loyola and maryland. they faced off in foxboro, massachusetts in the stadium, where the ravens fell just short of the super bowl back in january. but today, we knew for sure that a team from our area was guaranteed to come home a winner. 30,000 fans for the memorial day showdown. loyola grey fans, plenty of bark. their top-seeded team with plenty of bite. and maryland would take the lead, early second quarter. kevin cooper found the net. terps did not score again. they were shut out for the final 40 minutes of the game. mike sawyer, with the go-ahead goal. 4-3 hounds. and the rest of the game with the countdown to the celebration of the school's first-ever national title. fifth year senior eric luzbee of severna park. he adds to the victory as loyola tops the terps, 9-3. finished with a record 17 goals. he was named the most
