clinching the nomination. mitt romney should officially become the republican presidential nominee after today's texas primary. crisis in syria. international condemnation of last week's massacre grows as u.n. special convoy kofi annan meets with syrian president bashar al assad. and high tension. a police standoff unfolds more than a hundred feet in the air. captioning funded by cbs good morning, everybody. so good to be with you. i'm terrell brown. we begin overseas this morning. for the second time in just over a week northern italy has been rocked by a strong earthquake. this morning's quake was a

magnitude 5.8 and was felt north of the city of bologna. there are reports some buildings collapsed but no immediate reports of injuries. nine days ago a quake killed seven people damaging hundreds of buildings. back here in this country it's expected to be a big day for mitt romney. texas primary voters are all but sure to give romney enough delegates to assure the republican presidential nomination. he's been campaigning for weeks attacking president obama and romney is back on the campaign trail today. susan mcginnis is in washington with more this morning. susan, good morning to you. >> good morning, terrell. romney is right on the brink of clinching that nomination in texas. will do it for him today. meanwhile romney used memorial day to promise he'll maintain the strongest military in the world just as the president plans to downsize it. mitt romney is expected to formally clinch the republican nomination later today after months of primaries and

caucuses, romney will likely pass the 1, 144 delegates needed when texas voters go to the polls. the former massachusetts governor returns to the campaign trail after appearing at a memorial day service in san diego. romney has been critical of president obama's plan to downsize the u.s. military and he appeared to take another shot without naming hiss rival. >> we have two courses we can follow. one is to follow in the pathway of europe, to shrink our military smaller and smaller to pay for our social needs. >> congressional republicans and the white house have agreed to cut $487 billion in defense spending over the next decade. the plan includes removing u.s. troops from afghanistan by the end of 2014. american soldiers are no longer in iraq. >> after a decade under the dark cloud of war, we can see the light of a new day on the horizon. >> a new poll shows veterans prefer romney over president

obama, but veterans also supported john mccain in his failed bid for the presidency. now, even with the proposed defense cuts, the u.s. would still remain the world's dominant military power by far. terrell. >> all right. susan mcginnis in washington this morning. susan, thank you. the president remembered the nation's military heroes on memorial day. mr. obama placed the wreath at the tomb of the unknown. at arlington national cemetery. later the president visited the vietnam war memorial. he told a crowd of vietnam veterans they were sometimes denigrated when they should have been celebrated. the president called the way they were treated a disgrace that should have never happened. across the country yesterday there were parades honoring america's war-dead. the portsmouth parade is the oldest continuous memorial day parade. the tropical depression beryl now. this morning beryl is now 165 miles west -- southwest of savannah, georgia, and is expected to move back over the atlantic ocean by tomorrow.

but northern florida, parts of georgia and south carolina could see up to 10 inches of rain. beryl barreled ashore yesterday along the florida coast. thousands lost power and through was minor flooding but no deaths reported. in michigan's upper peninsula a wildfire has destroyed about a dozen buildings and vacation homes and cabins. more than 22,000 acres have been burned but no injuries have been reported. rain held firefighters' efforts yesterday, but strong winds pushed that fire along. overseas, election-related violence in egypt. yesterday protesters set fire to the cairo campaign headquarters of the campaign manager. he was hosni mubarak's last campaign minister. he'll face off in a runoff election next month. today in damascus, u.n. kofi annan met with the president. he's trying to end the bloody conflict over assad's

leadership. even staunch russia is taking a hard line. the former minister says assad bears the main responsibility for what is going on. bob orr reports. >> reporter: the wave of weekend killings in syria was condemned by america's top military officer, joint chief's chairman martin dempsey. >> what occurred over the weekend was horrific, atrocious. i expect in the international community that pressure will mount. >> reporter: pressure so far has failed to budge president bashar al assad who's ignored repeated calls by president obama to step down. >> it's important for the international community to rally and send a clear message it is time for a transition, it is time for that regime to move on. >> reporter: international economic sanctions are biting hard. syria's oil minister estimates the country has lost $4 billion in the nine months since the sanctions took effect. u.s. is also supplying

the standoff on the campus of southern methodist university has ended. cby affiliate in dallas kvtv says the man has fallen to his death. he had been inside the cattle of the construction crane 100 feet high since monday morning. we say the man is a suspect in a robbery. the school was between semesters so no students were in danger. congressman barney frank made some controversial comments referring to shooting victim trayvon martin sunday during a graduation ceremony at dart moth. he was speaking with an activist who had just gotten an honorary degree. he said jones played a major role in diminishing inequality in massachusetts. then he said this. >> i'm particularly pleased that he got an honorary degree today. you know, when you get an honorary degree, you get one of these, and i think you have a hoodie and no one will shoot at you. so you'll feel protected by that. >> it's one of those laughs and

awes you don't no which to do. hi was referring to the hoodie trayvon martin was wearing the night he got shot. he didn't mean to offend and has made that joke at over events. a social networking smartphone. ashley morrison is here with that and more. good morning, terrell. markets overseas got a bump up after trying to boost the stimulus. tokyo's nikkei gained half a percent while hong kong's hang seng added more than 1%. this week we'll get the latest numbers on the unemployment report and the latest number on home sales. traders returned to wall street after the markets were closed for memorial day. stocks were up for the week. the dow added 85 points while the nasdaq gained 58. the largest collapse of a u.s. law firm is all but complete. duey lebeouf filed last week. the firm which once boasted 1,300 lawyers owes their creditors $245 million. concern over their debt caused

several partners to leave since the beginning of the year. the firm will keep about 90 of its employees while it liquidates its assets. >> another strange twist in the britain's phone hacking scandal. a protester interrupted prime minister tony blair's testimony before a media ethics panel. the heckler called blair a war criminal but the bombshell came when blair admitted that he could not stand up to britain's media while he was in office. and facebook might be getting into the mobile phone business. according to "the new york times," the social media company has hired more than half a dozen hardware and software engineers who worked on apple's iphone. facebook has reportedly tried to develop a smartphone in the past. the company has not officially disclosed any plans to build a mobile device. but, terrell, that certainly would be interesting to see what that is about. >> we think we're already distracted with cell phones? add a facebook cell phone. it's a disaster waiting to happen. >> oh, boy. and two sisters in california got quite a surprise on monday. a bear went for a swim in their

here's a look at the weather in some cities around the country. d.c., afternoon thunderstorms, 87. in atlanta, thunderstorms, 86. morning showers in st. louis, 88. partly sunny, 71, in denver and partly sunny and 64 in seattle. a surprise find along the california coast. bluefin tuna with radiation levels ten times higher than the amount usually found in those fish. the fish carry radioactive cesium from japan's crippled nuclear plant 6,000 miles away. even with the elevated radiation

levels, the fish are still considered safe to eat for 30 years marines and their families at camp lejeune drank and bathed in contaminated water. now many are sick with cancer and many other illnesses. mark strassmann tells us making matters worse, they have to fight the administration making matters worse. >> that's my boot camp picture. >> where's you? >> my god. there i am. >> wow. >> reporter: frank rakowitz served 26 years in the marines. he was staying at camp lejeune, north carolina, between 1977 and 19786 when the water run days was toxic. rakowitz now has stage 4 kidney cancer. >> reporter: in what ways did you think you were exposed? >> well, i took showers aboard the base, drank water aboard the base on daily basis. it was obvious to me i was a prime candidate for someone who had been, you know, poisoned by the drinking water aboard camp lejeune. >> reporter: fuel and chemicals had seeped into camp lejeune's

primary water system for 30 years. the navy shut down the water wells in 1987. multiple studies have concluded the water was highly contaminated. chemicals like benzine, pce and tce were as high as 280 times the level considered healthy. the federal agency for toxic substances says those levels can cause leukemia, bladder, kidney, and breast cancer. >> reporter: what's the status of the cancer now? >> right now i have incurrable, inoperable cancer. i'm terminal. >> reporter: rakowitz filed a claim as a service-related illness. that would provide his wife ruth with an extra $1,100 a month in survivor benefits. >> i want to make sure she's taken care of when i'm gone. >> reporter: and that's your number one worry. >> that's my number one worry. >> reporter: the v.a. has denied 71 of these claims. 1,200 more cases are pending. no one with the v.a. would go on
