for the second straight day maryland is dealing with dangerous heat. temperatures are expected to reach into the 90s once again. that didn't stop some people from enjoying the early sun at lake montebello this morning. many were trying to stay in the shade if they could. and this video is just in to wjz. hundreds of elementary school students are being sent home early. the school has no air- conditioning and it's too hot to stay open. let's take a live look outside right now. the sun is blazing down on the inner harbor. let's go to bernadette woods tracking temperatures. >> good afternoon, don. the heat is on once again as we have been talking about. we want to show you the numbers. well into the 80s. these are way above the average highs for this time of year. notice the dew point at 68 degrees. that is pretty high. when you factor that with the temperatures, it feels close to 80 in baltimore.

92 in d.c. close to 90 in cumberland. and the thing is, you have the sunshine out there now, but there are storms heading our way. the storm prediction center put the green area in a slight risk for strong to maybe severe storms as we head through the afternoon. first warning doppler radar, there are thunderstorms out there. there is a severe thunderstorm watch out to the west with them. notice them moving to the northeast. this entire line will be moving our way later on today and we will have that in the forecast. don? >> thank you. a night with gun violence in east baltimore independents with a 10-year old in the hospital shot in the leg. the search is on for who did it. wjz mike hell green believes the youngster was in the wrong place at the wrong time. >> reporter: this happened around 9:30 last night in east hoffman street. the 10-year old was one of four victims. flashing police lights pierced the night as baltimore police

flooded hoffman street. a hot memorial day, many gathered outside and for four people including a 10-year old boy, it almost cost them their lives as one gunman started shooting wounding them in their legs. >> we are not sure who the targets were. we believe that the 10-year old was the victim of an accidental shooting, not the intended target. >> police don't know the motive or have anyone in custody. this senseless bloodshed is nothing new. >> just days ago, loved ones of 12-year-old shawn johnson marked one year since he was gunned down in northeast baltimore in a case of mistaken identity. >> looking for closure and justice. just want things to be safe for the rest of the kids. >> reporter: in 2009, this shooting caught on a city watch camera outraged many across the camera. stray bullets severely injured raven wyatt. police solved both of those

cases. they hope to do the same in the tragedy on hoffman street. >> it's sad with an evening with everybody outside. you have gunshots ring out, even the innocent often get hurt. >> reporter: apply say the bullet went through the 10-year old's leg. no names of the victims have been released. the other three were all in their 20s. don, back to you. the fourth person walked into a hospital with gunshot wounds. if you know anything about the case, contact baltimore city police. a hit-and-run accident in ocean city leaves a man dead and another behind bars. police say he was driving drunk early monday when he hit and killed matthew cheswich of cooksville in howard county as the 22-year-old crossed the highway. he then fled the scene but they followed the s.u.v. until police could arrest him. he faces several charges. this is to be a big day for opponents of same-sex marriage in maryland as he they took the

first step to putting the issue to referendom. ron matz has more. >> reporter: opponents of same- sex marriage in maryland are expected to hand in the first batch of signatures to put the issue to a vote in november. the marriage alliance is leading the petition drive to send same-sex marriage to the referendum. today the group will reveal the number of signatures already collected. 57,000 are required by the ends of next month with one third of those due on thursday. unless it's repealed in november, maryland's new law legalizing same-sex marriage will go into effect next january. don, back to you. >> wjz will have much more in the issue at 4:00, 5:00 and 6:00. the cleanup continues after beryl leaves her mark in parts of the south. there is heavy rain and coastal flooding in florida, georgia and south carolina. the storm left little property behind even though it made landfall with 70 miles per hour winds. it ruined the holiday weekend

heck of a rainstorm down south. many of those areas that you are looking at desperately for the past year have needed moisture. so, it's a good news bad news scenario. we won't get a drop of that rain but we will get rain later in the forecast and it will involve your weekend. when and how much so, bern that death woods will have the details shortly. now we will throw it back inside. in northern italy, 15 people are dead after a 5.8 magnitude earthquake this morning. it's the second quake to hit the region in a little more than a week. >> reporter: rescue workers are searching the rubble of a collapsed warehouse for survivors that may be trapped. a 5.8 earthquake sent buildings and churches crumbling tuesday. this man says he heard a loud bang when the earthquake hit and ran out of his house. people who were already homeless from a quake in the immediate region a little over

a week ago scrambled out of their temporary housing. dozens of aftershocks are causing more damage. a weakened building came down. the u.s. geological survey says the powerful earthquake struck about 25 miles northwest of the city of bologna and there are reports it was felt as far north as austria. italian police say the quake killed over a dozen people and more may be missing. crews are using bum dozers and other equipment to start clearing the debris. this is one of italy's largest industrial and agricultural areas. the government will do whatever is needed to get life back to normal as quickly as possible. >> that area is still cleaning up from an earthquake that hit may 20th. it left thousands of people homeless in the tents. it's commissioning day at

severe storms as we head through the afternoon. temperature-wise 87 in baltimore. 88 in d.c. and it's very muggy with dew points in the upper 60s. when you factor that in with the temperatures, it feels like 90 for a lot of us. with the wind it feels like 90 down in ocean city. here is the wind from the southwest keeping the heat in place. not just for us but for a lot of the country. we have seen record highs dropping from new orleans up to chicago. as the front comes across, it's knocking the heat down a bit. we have a cool down coming our way but not before thunderstorms. here is the front bringing the thunderstorms in from the west. as it gets into the heat around us, scattered strong thunderstorms are possible with some hail and gusty winds and, of course, if any warnings or watches come out we will pass that on to you. at the same time this front is what will keep beryl from

moving in our direction. it will force it out to sea. here is the track. it's starting to turn beryl to the northeast. winds 5 miles per hour. this track will pick up speed then head away from the united states over the next couple of days, maybe strengthening as it heads over the warm waters of the gulf stream. all of the forecast models keep it going in that direction. it will pass south of us. forecast comes together like this. this front coming through. eventually it will get out of here. when it does, here comes the cooler air. the forecast today, 93. way above averages with which are the upper 70s. tonight 68 for the low. thunderstorms around. that continues into tomorrow morning. through the afternoon, the front will try to move to the eastern shore and in a way it could be a slow go. warm and muggy. five-day coming up. >> thank you very much. still to come at noon, better than nothing. why unhealthy lungs are still being used in organ
