gripping heat. maryland is molting with july- like temperatures in may for the second day in a row. hi everybody. here's what people are talking about. it's unusually hot in maryland right now. temperatures we're used to seeing in mid-july, today the heat forces at least one school to close early. >> all the kids in the classroom was really sweaty. >> in north baltimore, hundreds of elementary students are sent home early. the building has no air conditioning and the school system agreed it was too hot to stay home. the sun made it hard to be outside for a long period of time, but a breeze this afternoon helped make the weather a bit more bearable. here's a live look outside, it's really beautiful. let's track temperatures in the

first warning weather center. >> and just a minute ago, the national weather service issued a severe thunderstorm warning for south western portions of washington county. take a look at the thunderstorms across the mountain region there. a bunch of storms have developed and moving northeast. let's look at the cell right now south near martinsburg. there you see it moving off to the east and northeast. and basically the area that you snow the triact -- that you see in the triangle into portions of west virginia. and that is for the next 30 to 40 minutes. could bring small hail and gusty wins and heavy downpours. the rest of the region, well, back again. there you see, a lot of activity to the north and west. we still have a chance of storms in the baltimore region through late tonight. we're at 91 degrees. same temperature we were

yesterday. in oakland, only 72 with shower activity. the dew point in the mid- to upper 60s, it feels more like 94 94 here. we will take a look in a few minutes. >> bob, thank you. a bloody night in east baltimore. four people are shot, including a 10-year-old boy. and today police are searching for the gunman. detectives think the youngster was in the wrong place at the wrong time. >> reporter: this happened last night. the 10-year-old was one of four victims. flashing police lights pierce the night as police flooded the street. on a hot memorial day, many gathered outside and for four people including a 10-year-old boy, it almost cost them their lives as one gunman started shooting here, wounding them in their leg. >> we're not sure at this point who the targets were. we do believe that the 10-year-

old was the victim of an accidental shooting, not the intended target. >> reporter: police don't know the motive or have anyone in custody. this bloodshed is nothing new. just days ago, loved once of the 12-year-old marked one year since he was gunned down in northeast baltimore in a case of mistaken identity. >> looking for closure and justice. you know, just want things safe for the rest of the kids. >> reporter: and this shooting caught on a city watch camera outraged many across the city, stray bullets injured a 5-year- old. police solved both of those cases and they hope to do the same in the tragedy last night. >> it's sad. in the evening with everybody outside, when you have gunshots ring out, even the innocent often get hurt. >> reporter: police say the bullet went all the way through the 10-year-old's leg.

wjz eyewitness news. >> the fourth person walked into the hospital with gunshot wounds. about an hour ago, same-sex marriage opponents turned in the first petitions hoping to repeal the same-sex law. >> reporter: they must submit a third of the signatures by thursday. and today they turned in twice the amount two days early. 55,000 signatures are needed to get the issue on the ballot. maryland's same-sex marriage law was passed in march, but it doesn't go into effect until january 2013. >> thank you. coming up, we have more reaction to the same-sex marriage debate. donald trump is once again stirring up questions about president barack obama's citizenship. and tonight's campaign report, this comes as mitt romney is

feels personally violated. his personal butler is behind bar, accused of theft after documents were found in his apartment. vatican prosecutors doubt the butler acted alone. at least 15 people are dead after a earthquake rocked northern italy. it is the second quake there in a little more than a week. >> reporter: a powerful earthquake shut down the church in italy, leaving just the facade. buildings throughout italy's region collapsed in tuesday's earthquake. several others fell in the aftershock. the police say more than a dozen people are dead and more are missing. rescue crews are combing through debrew looking for survivors. the center to testify town has been evacuated because it's

just too dangerous. she is afraid she will never be able to return to her home. she says, i feel empty, lost and terrified. when the earthquake hit, it rattled italian already living in tent camps since another deadly earthquake a week ago. the back to back earthquakes have devastated one of the largest industrial area, damaging and destroying factories. italy's prime minister says he is prepared to do whatever is needed to get the region back to normal as soon as possible. in italy, wjz, eyewitness news. >> it's estimated the earthquakes are leaving more than 14,000 people homeless. beryl is hanging on, bringing strong storms to florida and the southeast. whipping winds and rain are making big surges and flood watches and warnings as far as north carolina. last night, the storm rattled

jacksonville, florida taking down trees and power lines. where is beryl headed now? let's ask. give us the update. >> all right, it's a tropical depress and it's still hanging around. we will show you, you can see the skin across southern georgia here. just to the southwest. and you notice it's starting to drift northeast now. with the front moving our way is turning beryl around. and eventually taking it out to sea. but it's going to hug the coastline for a while. still winds about 30 miles per hour and it's going to pick up speed once it hits the water because it's in warm water from the gulf stream, possibly becoming a tropical storm as it races off to the east. and all forecast models keep this south of maryland. our own showers and thunderstorms to deal with. the thunderstorm warning is out. and we will have the forecast coming up. >> thank you. right now, let's check on

the warmer weather was a big boost for ocean city business this weekend. and as far as ocean city is concerned, summer is here and the board walk is alive again. board walk business owners say they live for memorial day weekend. >> we are non-stop making. we couldn't keep the cases full. everyone was coming up. got the new cinnamon flavors. that was cool. >> the turnout seems to be phenomenal compared to last year. >> last year, more than 281,000 people visited the resort. no word on the official number for this past weekend. today, about 1,000 midshipmen become commissioned officers. right now, it's 89 degrees. a homeowner on new york's long island is cleaning up a big mess after a car drives right through her house there. is the entire kitchen on her front lawn. it was destroyed after police say a 20-year-old woman crashed into the house. the home owner and her care taker were sleeping. no one was seriously injured. the driver was arrested and charged with dui. an 11-year-old girl falls from a rock climbing wall in florida and it's caught on video. the girl started climbing up the wall at a carnival in miami and then loses her grip. her safety harness even failed so she crashes to the pavement below. the girl's father was recording on the cellphone. doctors say she suffered a concussion, but is expected to recover. they are investigating the accident and how the harness

failed. two small planes collide in mid-air over a virginia neighborhood leaving to -- leaving two people dead and one injured. >> ever had so much activity in the front yard? >> no, sir. >> reporter: he says he thought his house may have been on fire when he saw the emergency vehicles. >> the crash site is about 16 feet long. >> reporter: turns out, one of two small planes that collided in midair over virginia this afternoon had crashed in his backyard, burst into flames -- >> when we arrived, one of the planes is on fire. >> reporter: and killed two people onboard. >> you could tell that whoever was in that did not survive. >> reporter: the other plane landed relatively smoothly in a field about a mile away. >> there is debris field in the area. so there were pieces around. >> reporter: the pilot of the cherokee was awake when rescuers arrivalled and is now being treated at that time hospital. >> never forget that sight.

a live look outside right now. it looks gorgeous in this air conditioned studio. but i know it is smoking hot out there. >> it is hot out there. and a lot of people are loving it, especially for memorial day weekend. but the heat is giving way to thunderstorms. and there are strong thunderstorms. first warning doppler radar. we have two severe thunderstorm warnings in effect.

one for allegheny county until 5:00. and one for washington county. there are a lot more thunderstorms where this came from. but this one right here, could have hail with it and gusty winds upwards of 60 miles per hour. east, northeast at about 30 miles per hour. and there's another one just off to the northwest of that. this one right in here making its way in. that is moving off to the north, northeast. and we will continue to track it through the evening. the wrap-up of watches and warnings. notice the line continues down to the southwest. and that's going to keep feeding into maryland and slowly climbing off to the east. so that's why we could see more warnings through the evening. earlier today, sunshine, and then the thunderstorms starting to fire up. all a part of the cold front. and the wins are out of the south really pumping up the heat once again today. 89 degrees right now. the dew points are high up

there also. muggy afternoon. and when you factor that together, it feels like 92 in baltimore. but the thunderstorms coming in. the high today so far has been 91 degrees. way above the average of 78. not quite the record, but nonetheless, a hot one out there. and cooler air coming our way behind the front. look at the 40s in business mark right now. 60 minneapolis after 90 over the weekend. so we have a cool down coming. the other thing it's doing in addition to bringing the thunderstorms is directing what is left of beryl. it's a tropical depression and these are the bands down to the south. that's starting to get the quick off to the east because of the front. and take a look at the path, turning off to the northeast, it's going to pick up the speed away from us. and our forecast month earlies keep it to the south of maryland.

89 degrees and mostly sunny. hello everyone. >> here's what people are talking about. >> jurors in the john edwards trial are back at work in the complex corruption case. some of the alternative jurors seem to be vying for attention. we have the report from north carolina. >> i'll be back. >> reporter: john edwards took a break from court as the jury's deliberations moved into a seventh day. could it be a hung jury? legal analysts say probably not yet. >> they have not said they are deadlocked. it's early to push panic buttons. but if we start dragging on towards the end of the week,

that's some clear indication that there's distinction. >> reporter: the day started with a closed door hearing to discuss a private issue regarding the jury. and before the lunch break, the judge repeated her instructions to only discuss the case when the jurors are all together. she said breaking into small groups can lead to division. and meanwhile, there have been antics with the four alternates. last week, they started dressing in the same colors. thursday yellow, friday, red. and one has been smiling at edwards. the presidential candidate has been politely smiling back. >> you don't want to do anything that will distract the process. on the other hand, the alternate jurors probably feel like they have no role to play and probably thought they would bring levity. >> reporter: there may be a problem with scheduling. jurors may need some time off to attend high school graduations in the coming days.

the second degree murder charge due to a pending psychiatric evaluation. it has been five years since the virginia tech massacre and the university is still trying to make the campus safer. a project is underway to install a video security system. up to 2500 security cameras could be installed over several years. the cameras will be in parking garages, sidewalks and other public areas. a howard county man is killed during the holiday weekend. >> reporter: the 22-year-old, a student was hit and killed early monday as he crossed coastal highway with a group of people. she has a vacation just feet from the scene of the deadly hit-and-run. >> horrible. first thought, that mom is getting phone call. and that's the worst one to get. >> reporter: it's a little sober. >> you know, we came down for

from maryland. another hot day across the state as temperatures once again reach into the nineties. at that time lake today, many were doing whatever they could to stay cool. this woman used the umbrella to provide shade. and take a live look outside right now, the sun beating down on baltimore. we have weather and traffic together. now the updated numbers. >> take a look at radar, a lot of activity west of the region. a lot of the thunderstorms producing gusty win, heavy downpours and small hail. and we still have advisories that just went into effect west of the baltimore region west into portions of northern virginia. they just issued a severe thunderstorm watch. that's until 10:00 tonight. for the next 15 minute, still in effect for a little portion of washington county and some of the neighboring counties in pennsylvania and west virginia.

fired ripped through a shopping mall killing more than a dozen children. >> as you see, smoke could be seen from miles away billowing from the mall. the fire broke out inside and spread quickly. so far, 19 people have died and 17 others have been injured. the mall is a popular tourist attraction in the area. western countries are stepping up the pressure on syria. the push comes after last week's massacre, most of them women and children. the united nations now says most of the victims were shot at close range. >> reporter: a cellphone

canada flight 1. >> part of an engine at 410 and courtny park. >> okay. >> reporter: the plane bound for tokyo took off just after 2:00 p.m. eastern monday. shortly after take-off, the jet lost one engine, forcing the pilot to circle around for about an hour, dumping fuel before safely making an emergency landing at 3:53 p.m. >> we came in very fast, at least twice the normal speed. >> reporter: the passenger was midair when he found out something was wrong. he snapped pictures after the landing. >> pulled off to a special area, fire crews and i'm taking pictures and my son thinking this is cute, having no idea something fell off the plane. >> reporter: investigators collected some of the debris monday and are also expected to take a close look at the plane itself. >> these types of failures are

extremely rare. they'll be tearing down the engines, part by part, piece by piece, to make sure they are understand exactly what happened during this failure. >> no one on the ground was hurt by the falling debris. more fees are in the works for those who fly. the tsa backed by democrats in the senate wants to increase the security fee everyone pays with a ticket. it could go to $5 one-way, $10 for a round-trip. tsa's budge set set to be cut and the boost would help cover the increase in security. republicans want to cut from other social programs to pay for the fees. hundreds of people swim in the san francisco bay, including a 9-year-old girl. that is jordan frier making the swim. almost 400 swimmers braved the 55 degrees water. she could be the youngest

some good stuff there. right there. just southeast of the area. and as you head further to the east across our portion of the world, closer to baltimore, good stuff over fredrick now. it's moving to the northeast toward sections and north sections carroll county. so affecting the areas shortly. quite a display of radar to the west of us. moving to the east, northeast at around 20 miles per hour. it make take a while to get to the baltimore region, but we have a severe thunderstorm watch until 10:00 tonight. humidity has come down, the dew point also dropped. southwest winds at 8 miles per hour. the pressure falling, with rain in the oakland area. everybody else close to the upper 80s to 90 now.

ocean city only 77. southerly winds strong indeed. keep the heat in for at least one more day. the front one more day, behind it, much cooler and drier air coming in. tomorrow night, much drier and cooler. there's the front. look at that, all displayed, showers and storms, the heaviest from maryland north. particularly the new york and pennsylvania. and all the activity is moving in our direction. look for a wet and stormy night. but once it passes, rain is going to get into eastern north carolina. it will not affect us. but we will see dryer and cooler air by later tomorrow. temperatures, look at that, jumped up to 76. showers and storms, yeah, later on, 68. still a chance of a shower tomorrow in northerning. otherwise, temperatures back up in the mid-80s later in the
