john edwards' trial. the jury rush -- returns a verdict on one of only six charges. >> what happens next. >> hi, everybody. i'm mary bubala. >> i'm kai jackson. here's what people are talking about. >> we have breaking news in the john edwards trial. a short time ago, the jury tells the judge they have consensus on only one charge, and they're dead-locked on the remaining five. manuel gallegus reports for wjz. the judge sternly tells the jury to keep trying. >> reporter: john edwards must wait a little longer to find out his fate. jurors in his campaign finance trial said they were deadlocked on five of the six counts against him. it was just after 2:00 p.m. when the jury sent word they had reached a verdict. but when the court convened, the jury said they had reached a unanimous decision only on count 3. that involves edwards receiving campaign funds illegally from heiress bunny

millen. she had given him more than $700,000 during his 2008 presidential campaign. prosecutor says he used that money to hide his pregnant mistress, rielle hunter. >> in all, they deliberated more than eight days. the judge has told the jury to go back to work, saying a future jury would not have an easier time reaching a decision. >> reporter: in greensboro, north carolina, manuel gallegus, wjz eyewitness news. >> edwards faces 30 years in prison and more than a million dollars in fines if he's convicted on all counts. campus alert. this triggers an intense search and a temporary lockdown. derek valcourt has more on the search for a gunman. >> police found the car they were looking for, and inside it, they found the gun that that student had reported seeing. but so far, no suspects. >> reporter: a warning of a possible gunman on the umbc camp us went out through text alerts. >> police in the area of west

hill apartments and walker avenue, for a report of a man with a gun, stay inside and out of area. >> reporter: those texts, trigger bood i an early-morning 911 call, from the female student who said a man she knew showed her a handgun when they were sitting in a car near the apartment. >> it was not a threat. the person just displayed the handgun. and the female student saw the handgun. so there was no threat involved. >> reporter: when police arrived, they found the car and inside, the gun they were looking for. but the man the woman had identified, could not be found. >> reporter: as police began searching for the suspect, cell phone text messages warned students who were not yet on campus to delay their arrival. and warned those who were already here, to stay indoors. >> they said he was right near west hill. and i live in west hill. i was not trying to risk it, you know? >> i also thought of what happened at virginia tech. i was scared of that happening here. >> i was freaked out since the police came knocking on my

door. >> reporter: a door-to-door search of housing left police empty-handed. after several hours, they gave students the all-clear. >> obviously that was a bit nerve-racking, but the cops seemed to handle it well and efficiently. i feel pretty safe for the most part. >> reporter: police say they choases not to -- on chose not to close down the campus because they felt they had the threat limited to a cordoned off area. >> police say they know who the suspect is. they're getting help from baltimore county police to find him. when they do, he will likely be charged with bringing a gun on campus. no bail for a harford county man charged in a heinous murder. gigi is live with the shocking details of a suspect in the case of a dismembered body. gigi? >> the remains believed to be cujo ansalfo cody, were found

in a nearby dumpster. 21-year-oldalexander kinyua is being held. coding went missing a few days ago. when police searched the home he shared with kinyua. kinyua admitted that after dismembering cody's body, he then ate the man's heart and brain. police are still searching for a motive in this case. mary, back to you. >> wjz has more on this bizarre murder coming up all new at 5:00 and 6:00 tonight. police in pittsburgh are questioning a maryland woman found tied up and screaming for help inside the hotel room of a cincinnati reds pitcher. weijia jiang has more on what police are saying. >> reporter: claudia manreek of silver spring, maryland, has been questioned by detectives for hours. it all started late tuesday night, when someone knocked on the door of the room registered to cincinnati pitcher chapman. he was not inside the room.

he was still at pnc park. police say the 26-year-old columbian woman answered the door of chapman's room. a man identified himself as a maintenance worker and said he was there to fix the toilet. upon entering, the man demanded certain items in the room. manreek refused. the man then allegedly tied up her hands with cloth napkins and ransacked the room, taking clothing, jewelry, credit cards and id cards. manreek's screaming attracted attention from other hotel guests who alerted hotel security. reds' players signing outside the hotel knew little. >> i literally came downstairs. >> what do you think of something like that. >> i think it's terrible. >> i've never heard of something like this happening. this is all new to me. >> reporter: manreek said at the time of the heist, chapman was playing the pirates at pnc park. chapman, dubbed the cube arn

missile, is 23 years old. and defected from cuba in 2009. weijia jiang, wjz eyewitness news. cincinnati reds say they're aware of the robbery and assault and are working with police. a marine from baltimore county loses his life in afghanistan on memorial day. 22-year-old sergeant julian chase of edgewater died monday in hellman province, during combat operations. chase was assigned to the fifth air naval empire, third marine expeditionary force in okinawa. sergeant chase joined the marines in 2008, after joining from woodrow high school. he is the fourth maryland service member to die in combat this year. the gloves are off. and mitt romney and president obama are finding new targets to attack today. in tonight's campaign 2012 report is the new focuser president obama's green energy. and mitt romney as governor. bill plante has more from washington. >> reporter: president obama welcomed mitt romney to the race wednesday with a phone

[ stock bells ringing ] >> it ends a very rough may for the markets. the dow lost 6% of its value this month. today, it was down 26. s&p down 3. nasdaq off 10. let's go to new york, where alexis christoforous has tonight's cbs money watch update. >> wall street closed out the worst month in nearly a year, as investors adjusted to mixed economic news. the labor department says 383,000 americans filed for unemployment benefits last week, the highest level in five weeks. and the payroll company adp says it rpeers businesses are -- appears businesses are hiring fewer new employees than predicted. the major markets in europe sell 7% in may. traders are concerned greece could drop the euro and spain may need a bailout. but investors are encouraged to find out that spanish leaders are in washington, meeting with

we have breaking news from north carolina, the jury in the trial says it is hopelessly deadlocked. the jury returned a not guilty verdict on the count of illegal campaign contributions. they told the judge they could not agree on the rest. were sent back into deliberations. edwards is facing six felony counts with a possible six years in prison. we'll have more on this coming up at 5:00 and 6:00. but again, the jury tells the. >> reporter: they are hopelessly deadlocked in the john edwards trial. we're going to go to bob turk. just a beautiful day out there today. >> so pleasant. so comfortable. and all of that due to the lower dew point air. very dry air. even at 95 degrees.

eyewitness news. i'm vic carter. >> here's what people are talking about. updating the breaking news, a major development in the john edwards trial. a jury reaches a verdict on one count of illegal campaign contributions but is hopelessly deadlocked on the other charges. >> there is a partial verdict in the criminal trial of john edwards, the former senator from north carolina and former democratic vice presidential nominee. the jury found edwards not guilty on one count of violating federal campaign finance law when he used nearly $1 million from his 2008 presidential campaign coffers to cover up an affair with his pregnant mistress, rile hunter. -- rielle hunter. the jury deadlocked on five other counts. and the judge has just declared a mistrial on all of those counts. so the trial of john edwards is over, with a not guilty decision on one count and a

deadlocked jury on five other counts. the injured came in on the 9th day of deliberations. the federal court in greensboro, north carolina, heard 17 days of testimony, though neither edwards nor his mistress, rielle hunter, took the stand. joining me now is erin moriarte of "48 hours." erin, you have been attending the trial. what do you make of this decision? >> of course, it's a huge win for the defense. even though the jury was deadlocked on five of those counts, i think it would be very difficult for the government to retry him on those counts. certainly they have that option. but they are stuck with their key prosecution witness, andrew young and clearly, i mean, this is a whole case really hinging on andrew young, who accepted most of these funds from both fred baron and there rachel bunny melon. and clearly the jury did not believe them. and of course, there was testimony that he used more than $1 million himself to

build a house. >> andrew young is a close confidant of john edwards. he had worked in the campaign. the campaign contributions or the contributions in question had been funneled through him to pay off and pay the expenses of edwards' mistress. but obviously the jury did not find that a story that they could give credit to. >> well, the defense had argued that john edwards didn't even know about it and the fact that andrew young didn't been it himself lent some credence to that. baron and melon were both long- time friends of edwards. and the defense argued if they had given this money to him, no matter what, whether he was running for president or not, then those are not campaign contributions. clearly, the jury was struggling with that. here's another serious problem. the two donors in question, both fred baron and bunny melon. neither one testified. fred baron is dead.

and bun melon is 101 years of age. so they couldn't read into the find of what these people intended. >> a lot of gray area. so to repeat, a jury in greensboro, north carolina, has found john edwards not guilty of violating federal campaign finance laws the jury deadlocked on five other counts. the judge has declared a mistrial on those counts. so the edwards' trial is over. >> that was scott pelley, of course. and we'll have reaction to this breaking news, coming up new at 5:00 and 6:00. a gunman opens fire inside a seattle cafe and takes off, creating chaos, city wide. six people are dead. the gunman is among those dead. >> seattle police say the bearded man in this surveillance photo opened fire shortly after walking into this seattle cafe, near the university of washington, wednesday morning. about a minute later, he is seen standing alone, amid overturned stools, holding what appears to be a gun in his left

hand. >> it's a very mellow cafe. there's lots of artists there and musical performances and that kind of thing. it's the last place that you would expect for something like this to happen. >> reporter: while police were looking for the gunman, they say he fatally shot a woman during a carjacking in downtown seattle. the stolen suv was found abandoned with a handgun on the driver's seat. >> this was a tragic day for the city. >> reporter: while police were speaking to reporters, word came of a third shooting, involving police and a man fitting the description of the gunman, in a neighborhood near where the stolen car was found. >> the suspect saw this uniformed officers. he knelt down in the middle of the street and put the gun to his head and shot himself. >> reporter: police say preliminary findings suggest all three shootings are connected. seattle is in the midst of a gun wave of violence. police are asking for help. >> it's also going to take a full partnership with the community, to end the culture

of violence, where young men believe it's okay to attempt to resolve disputes with violence, including guns. >> reporter: it's not yet june. and the city has almost matched the number of homicides reported in all of 2011. teresa garcia, wjz eyewitness news. >> the gunman later died at the hospital. police don't yet have a motive for the shootings. but they say they believe the carjacking victim was random. shaken resident necessityally seek comfort in an open-air mass days after an earthquake brings down their church. >> tuesday's quake killed 17 people and injured 200 more. buildings throughout italy's emilio romano region collapsed in the earthquake, including the church of st. francis, where today, parishioners held mass outside. they forced survivors to reexamine the purpose of life. this is the second quake to hit

the region. earlier this month, an earthquake killed seven people. >> italy's prime minister says he is prepared to do whatever is necessary to get the region back to normal as soon as possible. syria is on the brink of civil war. as monica villamizar reports, this follows after two massacres in a week and months of relentless violence. >> reporter: syrian rebels say they're armed and ready to keep fighting government troops for as long as it takes. the forces loyal to president bashar asad, a 48-hour window to put down their weapons or pay the price. the army came with tanks and weapons to burn up our towns because we oppose assad. one top rebel leader wants the leader to declare this. so they can start a new offensive. u.s. attorney general, ban-ki moon warned that they could push syria into a devastating

civil war. he says u.n. observers are not in syria to just stand by and watch the killing of innocent civilians. >> we have not to play the role of passive observer, to unspeakable cities. >> reporter: on a visit to denmark, secretary of state hillary clinton said every day of slaughter in syria strengthens the case for international action. but she stressed russia would need to be on board for any military intervention. >> the syrians are not going to listen to you. they will listen, maybe to the russians, so we have to keep pushing them. >> reporter: u.n. officials say the violence in syria may have reached a tipping point that could plunge the entire region into chaos. monica via villamizar, wjz eyewitness news. >> syrian authorities say they released 500 prisoners today who were suspected of taking part in the uprisings. it comes two days after the u.n. urged the syrian government to take bold steps to bring peace. federal transportation officials shut down 26 bus

companies along the east coast. the crackdown comes after a year-long probe, prompted by a series of deadly tour bus crashes. the investigation found several carriers, operating under multiple safety violations. that included using drivers without valid driver's licenses. the companies closed are based in georgia, indiana, new york, north carolina, pennsylvania and here in maryland. new york's mayor has a new target. and it's fighting against the city's obesity problem. super sized soft drinks. >> well, vic, michael bloomberg wants to ban super sized soft drinks at fast food ized soft restaurants, arenas and movie theaters. under the proposal, sugary drinks larger than 16 ounces would be prohibited. that would include energy drinks, presweetened iced teas and soda. they said they are not going to be attacking soda because soda is not driving the obesity problem. if the drive goes through, it would be the first of its type

we want do update -- to update a breaking story wjz has been following. a gunman on the campus of umbc. derek valcourt is there on the scene. the suspect has been taken into custody. police will not say where. but they will confirm he is a umbc student. he's currently being questioned by police and has not been charged. the campus has been placed on alert this morning after a woman saw a man with a gun. police did find the gun but have been searching all day for the suspect. much more on this breaking story coming up all new at 5:00. a small plane goes down in utah, killing four people. the bodies of the victims are still being recovered from the wreckage. the faa says the single-engine plane took off and went down near zion international park. four men in their 20s were killed when the plane went down. both crashes are under investigation. two machine charged in the

beating of a san francisco giants fan. gigi barnett is live with more on the evidence that prosecutors introduced today. >> well, vic, the prosecution played a phone call that they say holds a confession by one of the accused. ession by one marvin norwood and louie sanchez listened in on a phone call norwood made to his mother, shortly after he was arrested. he is heard telling her that he was, quote, involved in that dodger stadium thing. the two were accused of picking a fight with brian stow, who was wearing a giants jersey and nearly beating tim to death in the stadium parking lot. they both face assault and mayhem charges. they pleaded not guilty back in august and remain behind bars today. vic, back to you. >> stow is still recovering. he's in a wheelchair, has limited speech, and suffers a serious short-term memory loss. more problems for the catholic church, this time in milwaukee. the archdiocese there, admits to paying priests up to $20,000 to leave the ministry,

following allegations of sexual abuse. they say it was a former charity to help the men readjust to a new way of life. but others view it as a payoff or bonus. a truck crashes through a wall. as john laurason reports for wjz, it is caught on tape. >> it happens so quick,, he didn't have time to react. >> the video say its all. you see a group of customers sitting at the bar. they are completely unaware that they are in danger. in the blink of an eye, a truck barrels through the wall, and pins the customers to the bar. >> we were talking, we were sitting there. and the next thing i know, i see a pole flying through the parking lot. then i hear this bang. and i'm looking and this truck is flying through the wall. >> reporter: police say a woman was driving her truck east on little canada road, when she veered across traffic, hit a utility pole and drove through the west wall of gordy's place. she was pinned inside her truck and was one of six people rushed to the hospital. two of them had serious injuries but none of them are

considered life-threatening. >> he's doing okay. he doesn't have any fractures or anything. he's okay. >> reporter: ana diaz says her friend is rorching tonight. >> recovering tonight. >> what he told me was that i was squished between the chair and the bar. and i go, just maybe a millimeter or more and he will be dead. >> reporter: power was shut off to gordy's, and the truck was eventually pulled out. the owner says they can reopen in a few days. but tonight, he's thinking of his customers who were caught in the middle of a freak accident. >> it's a terrible thing, you know? you hate to have people come into your bar and get hurt while sitting at the bar. >> drivers think the woman driving the truck may have had a medical condition that caused her to drive into the bar. animal gets stuck on top of a 30-foot light pole in kansas city. she spent a few hours there, until some utility workers arrived on the scene. they got a little too close. and that's when she decided to

developing, essentially a warm front is going to start warming over the ohio valley. that's going to cross our region sometime in the afternoon. it may bring us clouds in the morning. maybe even a slight chance of a shower, let's say after the sunrise. just a slight chance. then we'll be in that warmer air mass. and eventually, during the afternoon and evening hours, a front to the west will begin approaching our region. and across the area, sometime between let's say 7:00, and midnight. that's when we have a chance of getting strong thunderstorms. we'll number the warmer, more humid air mass. front coming through. showers and thunderstorms. pretty good risk. we'll see at least a slight risk, according to the national weather service, out in the storm center. low pressure is going to pass basically to our northwest. a lowing the warm air to come back in. the front comes through the air. and it's got chilly air with it. so you're going to have two air masses, colliding or clashing with our region. best chance we'll see some strong thunderstorms, particularly south and east of the area. and that's going to be tomorrow evening. but by saturday, it's off to the east, dryer and less humid
