campaign finance case has declared a mistrial. edwards was found not guilty on just one of the six counts against him. >> reporter: at the heart of the case was the edwards' campaign use of mimillion dollars and secret donations donations to hide his mistress, rielle hunter. the prosecution said that money counted as campaign contributions because the goal was to save edwards' candidacy. they pinned much of their case on their star witness, andrew young. as edwards' campaign aide, young was charged with keeping hunter hidden. he claim even claimed he was the father of her baby. the government's witnesses revealed painful details of the affair and how it devastated his wife elizabeth as she battled cancer. before the case went to trial, edwards said leafs looking forward to telling his side of the story. but in the end, he decided not to testify in his own defense. >> in fact, it took less than three days days to present its

displaying the gun on the campus. derek valcourt is there. just finished speaking with police. >> we can tell you that police will only confirm that that suspect is in fact, a student here on campus. and they say that gun he was wielding was actually a starter pistol. makes a loud noise like a gun. not actually capable of firing bullets. >> police swarmed around the umbc west hill apartments after a student called to report a man she knew and had been sitting in a car with, showed her gun. >> it was not a threat. >> immediately sent out text message alerts to all students. >> police in the area of west hill apartments and walker avenue, for a report of a man with gun, stay inside and out of area. >> reporter: when police arrived, they found no -- the gun but not the man they were looking for. >> reporter: as police began looking for the suspect, cell phone text messages warn

students who were not yet on campus to delay their arrival, and warned those who were already here to stay indoors. >> the first thing i thought, i was really shocked. i didn't know what to do. >> reporter: before i was actually on campus, i was sitting in my car for a while. just wondering whether or not i should get out. >> reporter: campus wasn't closed because we ascertained that the threat was isolated to a specific area of campus. and we didn't feel that it was necessary or prudent to close the whole rest of the campus. >> reporter: a door-to-door search of student housing came up empty handed. police believe the suspect left campus and students carried on their day. >> just makes me wonder why it happened. just seems weird it happened here. because it is relatively safe. >> reporter: again, police confirm they are currently interviewing the suspect, who is a student here at umbc. and they say that gun he was wielding was simply a starter

pistol. we'll keep you posted. derek valcourt, wjz eyewitness news. >> campus police are getting help from baltimore county police. in this case. again, no charges have been filed. maryland state police accuse a man of taking videos of children at rest stops of children along i-95. vic is in the newsroom with more on the search for possible victims. >> police say a pennsylvania man used a cell phone camera to record at least 11 boys using the bathroom. 28-year-old brian williams is facing charges, after investigators discovered the videos in his possession. the recordings were taken in the men's rest rooms at the chesapeake house in cecil county. any potential victims or witnesses who visit those locations on may 6th should call police to help them identify the children. >> williams is free on bond. he is now awaiting trial. a morgan state university student is accused of murdering his roommate inside their harford county home. then eating some of the victim's organs. wjz is live in harford county. mike hellgren explains what the suspect told police about this

gruesome crime. mike? >> reporter: kai, i was at the suspect's bail review today. he was calm. he said very little, other than he was originally from nairobi kenya, but had been in maryland for nine years and has strong ties to the community. but the reasons behind this, frankly stunning crime, remain a mystery. >> investigators say 21-year- old college student alexander kenyua killed his roommate and cut out his heart and brain, cutting them up. family members there declined to speak about the chilling crime. police say his brother found the remains, and his father called police. >> there was inconsistencies in the stories of both the parents that were there. we found out that their stories, when they were interviewed a second time, did not match up with the first time. >> reporter: but what's the motive? police haven't ruled out

anything, including drugs. they say while he was cooperative, confessed, would not say why he did it. he recently posted statements about cults, ethnic cleansing and school shootings online. >> human remains, specifically a head and hands, were recovered on the main floor of the residence. >> reporter: wjz obtained the missing persons report on the victim, 37-year-old cujo cody who disappeared last week. both he and kinyua attended the university of maryland. kenyua was out on bond who he was arrested for this murder. >> by no means is the investigation over. we are looking at every angle. we are looking at, is there a possibility that there are other suspects? >> reporter: and that lead investigator told me he has no reason to believe that kenyua

was lying about eating those body parts. this investigation, though, remains wide open. live in harford county. mike hellgren, wjz eyewitness news. >> all right, mike. thank you. police found the rest of the remains inside a dumpster at the town baptist church, less than a mile from the home the victim and suspect shared. a maryland marine is killed in afghanistan. the pentagon says 22-year-old sergeant julian chase died while conducting combat operations. the edgewater native was -- fighting in the helman province. chase was the fourth member from maryland killed this year. the decision to label pit bulls dangerous in maryland has many dog owners upset. now, lawmakers are looking into the controversial ruling. wjz is live. gigi barnett explains the plans to address the concerns. gigi? >> reporter: kai, this has been an emotional issue on both sides. pit bull owners say the court's ruling is discrimination. and victims say they just want more protection from the breed. now, lawmakers are weighing in. >> reporter: maryland's highest

court rules that pit bulls and pit bull mixes are inherently dangerous. the decision came last month. dog owners soon fired back, rallying on the state house steps, calling their pets harmless. >> a lot of them are just so sweet. >> reporter: now, state lawmakers are adding to the debate, with the bipartisan task force. designed to weigh the consequences and what it means for owners, victims and ultimately pit bulls. >> what i'm seeing right now is that the shelters are overrun with pit bulls. >> reporter: senator lisa gladden is on the task force. she says they'll look at everything, even when others say they're doing to reign in pit bulls. >> in some counties in florida, they outlaw the ownership of pit bulls. i think that's probably too much. but i think that the owners should, if they love their dog, they would take any kind of training class. >> reporter: under the court's ruling, dog owners are much more liable now if their pit bull is attacked. that's because a victim doesn't have to prove if the dog has

bitten before. they say this rule suggest causing some landlord to evict pit bull owners. and he's concerned where that leaves the dogs. >> thousands of pit bulls may be put to sleep because of this ruling. so we have to come up with a decision. because it's important to a very large segment of people who live in the state of maryland. >> reporter: and lawmakersmakers have tried before to address the court's ruling with other laws. meanwhile, the task force plans to wrap up its work before an expected july 9th special session. kai, back to you. >> gigi, thank you. now, three of the five delegates on the cask force, introduced bills during this month's special session to overturn the court's decision. desire more financial troubles for rg steel. the company files for chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, just days after idling operations at sparrows point. they list more than $1 billion in debt. nearly 2,000 of the company's employees will be laid off in

juveniles. >> this is a long-term problem with awareness. there are problems in baltimore county. problems around the state. >> reporter: but fights, murders and shootings make the city and mayor rawlings-blake his priority. >> probably more useful if he would get the support of his are the colleagues. >> mcdonogh said he voted against it because it included tax increases. but mayor rawlings-blake says funding is critical to crimefighting. >> we would not be able to get there without smart investments. so smart investments, he would have slashed in his budget. so i have no interest in debating him. >> mcdonogh's proposals include legislation that he is including an advocacy fund. if you are waiting for someone to get home from work, let's check on the roads. right now at traffic control.

it is just before 5:30. 82 degrees and sunny. good evening. and thank you for staying with wjz eyewitness news. here are some of the stories people are talking about tonight. a maryland woman is found tied up and screaming for help inside a hotel room of a major league baseball player. she was staying with a cincinnati reds pitcher when she was attacked by an intruder. weijia jiang has more from police. claudia manreek of silver spring, maryland, has been questioned by police for hours. it all started late tuesday night, when someone knocked on the room registered to cincinnati pitcher chapman. he was not inside the room. he was still at pnc park. pittsburgh police say the 21- year-old woman entered the door of chapman's room. a man identified himself as a maintenance worker and said he was there to fix the toilet. upon entering, the man demanded certain items in the room.

manreek refused. the man then allegedly tied up her hands with cloth napkins, taking jewelry, clothing, credit cards and id cards. manreek's screaming attracted attention from other hotel guests who alerted hotel security. reds' players signing autographs outside the hotel knew little. >> when you -- what do you think about something like that? >> i think it's terrible. this is all news to me. >> we can't comment on that. i'm sorry. >> manreek, described as chapman's escort, told police that at the time of the heist, chapman was playing the piterates. chapman, cubed the cuban missile, is 24 years old and defected from cuba in 2009. weijia jiang, wjz eyewitness news. >> the cincinnati reds say they are aware of the robbery and assault and are working with police. police charge three teenagers following the suicide

of a 15-year-old. denise is in the newsroom with details on what police call an environment of intimidation. >> two classmate and a 19-year- old have been charged with assaulting and robbing lennan baldwin in the days before he took his life. prosecutors say baldwin was attacked on two different occasions. first at the school, and several days later in a parking lot. they also say they tried to force the victims to say it was a school prank. new jersey has enacted one of the toughest anti-bullying laws. but prosecutors have not said if they will try the suspects under that law. >> reporter: the two juveniles are under house arrest, while the 19-year-old suspect is out on bail. seattle police are looking for a motive after a man walks into a cafe and opens fire. teresa garcia reports for wjz. six people are now dead, including the gunman. >> reporter: seattle police say the bearded man in this surveillance photo opened fire, shortly after walking into this seattle cafe, near the university of washington, wednesday morning.

about a minute later, he is seen standing alone, amid overturned stools, holding what appears to be a gun in his left hand. >> it's a very mellow cafe. there's lots of artists there. and musical performanceless and that kind of thing. it's the last place that you would expect for something like this to happen. >> reporter: while police were looking for the gunman, they say he fatally shot a woman during a carjacking in downtown seattle. the stolen suv was found abandoned with a handgun on the driver's seat. >> this was a tragic day for the city. >> reporter: while police were speaking with reporters, word came of a third shooting, involving police and a man fitting the description of the gunman, in a neighborhood near where the stolen car was found. >> the suspect saw the uniformed officers. he apparently knelt down in the middle of the street and put the gun to his head and shot himself. >> reporter: police say preliminary findings suggest all three shootings are connected. seattle is in the midst of a wave of gun violence. it's police and city officials asking for help.

>> that's also going to take a full partnership with the community to end the culture of violence, where young men believe it's okay to attempt to resolve disputes of violence, including guns. >> it's not yet june. and the city has not yet matched the number of homicides reported in all of 2011. >> teresa garcia, wjz eyewitness news. >> the gunman died at a nearby hospital. police don't yet have a motive for the shootings. but they say they believe the carjacking victim was random. a pornography actor is on the run tonight. he is accused of mailing body parts to political offices in canada. police believe this man, luca rocco, magnatta, may have fled north america. he's accused of killing and dismembering an acquaintance. detectives say he then sent some of the body part toss officers across canada. a warrant is out for his arrest. there is growing pressure on syrian president bashar

dozens of students are awarded college today through the baltimore community foundation. and seven of those scholarships are named for wjz's beloved former anchor, jerry turner. >> reporter: sarah hermina didn't grow up watching wjz anchor jerry turner. she's too young. but she understands his legacy, as one of the seven winners of the 2012 wjz jerry turner broadcast scholarship. awarded today at a luncheon in m&t bank stadium. sare was also chosen to speak there. >> i'm going to express my gratitude to jerry turner. i think he did have an impact on the field, obviously to this day. and i'm going to tell them a little bit about my experiences at st. john's this past year. >> susan horn established a scholarship in her husband's name, irvin horn, in his death. >> my husband passed away suddenly. and it's very hard for us. but he was such a giving person. and i said, you know, i know we need to do something to continue his legacy. >> reporter: now, harrison lee

remnants from tropical storm beryl spawn a tornado. the national weather service says it was an ef1 tornado, with winds up to 110 miles per hour. at least 70 homes were damaged in catteret county. now, there have been no reports of injury at this time. the local fire department will perform a final damage assessment of the area. the largest wildfire in new mexico's history continues to burn at this hour. fire officials say it's now burned more than 190,000 acres. the dry climate, strong winds are fanning the flames. more than 1200 firefighters are working to contain the blaze, which was sparked by lightning last week. another runway accident at o'hare airport in chicago today. an american eagle plane slid off the runway, onto a paved area. it had just taken off from oklahoma, but returned because of mechanical problems. no one was injured. this comes one day after two planes collided on the runway there at o'hare. shocking video at minnesota. a truck drives into a bar full of people.

the surveillance video shows people sitting at the bar, when all of a sudden, that pickup truck comes barreling through the wall. six people were injured, including the driver. police say she veered across traffic. hit a utility pole and drove through that bar. everybody is expected to survive, though. >> it's hard to watch. >> unbelievable. amazing everybody survived. federal officials have closed more than two dozen bus operations, calling them eminent hazards to public safety. randall pinkston reports for wjz, they operated along the east coast, including right here in maryland. >> reporter: the department of transportation has shut down 26 bus operations, based in six states. hoping to prevent tragedies like this one. 15 people were killed, as they return to new york from a casino trip last spring. transportation secretary ray lahood, and new york senator charles schumer announced the d.o. t.'s unprecedented crackdown. >> by ignoring safety rules, these operators put both passengers and are the

motorists at serious risk in shutting them down will save lives. >> reporter: the shutdown applies primarily to three companies. apex bus, i-95 coach. and new century travel, which managed a network of smaller companies. they are accused of using drivers without valid licenses. failing to test drivers for alcohol and drug use. and using buses that had not been properly inspected and repaired. >> the enforcement action involved just over 30 buss that transported 1800 passengers a day. most of the bus routes began or ended here in new york's chinatown. >> i'd say most of them are safe. or they shouldn't be on the road. >> reporter: the department is now working to create tougher penalties for bus companies that violate federal laws. >> the most important piece is allowing them to pierce the veil. unfortunately, these companies keep changing their names and keep going. it's very hard to track them down. >> reporter: under the proposed legislation, fines would
