as bob has been warning you all afternoon, don't drown, turn around. if you see a flooded road don't drive through it. you have no idea how deep that water is and how fast it's moving. that is not a wise thing to be doing. megan mccorkel is in howard county. but we're going to go right to bob turk, changes every time we go to you, bob. >> we just had a new tornado warning issue this includes very close to the baltimore area. elk ridge and catensville. still around and still there's a potential -- there's still a possibility that it could create severe weather. southern and south western baltimore county and a little bit of south eastern baltimore county until 6:30. there it is. laurel to glen burney western areas. let's look inside it once
6:01 pm
again. that's the only way you can tell there's rotation to the north. see that little chart to the top of there, look through there. not really seeing a whole lot of rotation. i mean, if we were seeing reds and green in direct oppositions that's when we're seeing rotation. this cell still could produce something, a funnel cloud or something akin to that that's why they've issued a tornado warning. i'm not seeing looking at it with doppler radar inside i'm not seeing rotation. although it does seem to be something going on around here. around 32 and 95. that's heading right toward the city. we're going to see at round of storms. that is a lot of rain and the flood warnings currently in effect for the baltimore region. many areas fredrick area, carol
6:02 pm
county another extended thunderstorms warning in effect also for harford county. that cell moving through the bell air area, over toward joplin moving at 25 miles per hour. that's also creating very heavy rains. not a tornado but severe thunderstorms warning. winds at 50 to 65 miles per hour with that cell. all across central maryland. that's where a lot of the activity is. south and east of the city not a whole lot going on in the eastern shore now. just lighter showers, 102 now just popping up southwest. south of dc and 95 a lot of activity and if you note to the west of us. another line of storms has formed over portions of west virginia. that activity we have to watch later tonight. that's where the squall line is forming along the cold front. just going through cumberland and romney. it's moving mainly to the northeast around 25, 35 miles per hour. so after 8:00 or 9:00.
6:03 pm
another risk of more thunderstorms activity. this is something that's ongoing that we keep tracking this evening. once again if you're under a tornado warning the best thing to do as you mentioned is to get into a sturdy portion perhaps. the basement the best place to be. stay away from windows. if you're in a mobile home that's not a good place to be. stay in a sturdy, sturdy window, vic. >> first warning weather coverage continues now with megan mccorkel. she joins us now live on the phone. >> reporter: and we found a home that had a tree just go through the entire first floor of that house. i talked to the couple who lives here, they said they were on their laptops when all of a sudden the skies turned black. they were watching the trees blow in the wind. they knew it was severe weather, that's when a tree up
6:04 pm
rooted, passed through several rooms upstairs. building inspectors have already come to the house and condemned the house. the family is going through getting laptops and animals to get to a hotel. the city had to bring out a crane to pick up the tree from the house. there are in fact, 50 phone calls. >> that was megan mccorkel reporting where she's been reporting storm damage. our coverage continues with christie bresland live. she's been monitoring the traffic all afternoon. we've had a couple of serious accidents and a lot of back up, christie. >> absolutely denise. unfortunately it continues to be troublesome for northbound i95.
6:05 pm
let's take a live look. we do have an accident at north marsh boulevard. traffic has just begun to move. they've just opened up a couple of lanes. allow yourself some extra time if you're traveling on the corridor. we've also gotten word amtrak has suspended service between vwi thurgood because of a system failure. as far as the harrisburg area goes, some and go there from tamonium road to belfast. the north side interloop that's been a major problem today. delays still stretch there from park heights avenue over to 95 on the northeast side. also on the west side delays there from the vw parkway to security boulevard. 70 westbound continues to be heavy. slow in the eastbound direction as you make your way toward the beltway. a lot of delays out there. flooding still in some areas we
6:06 pm
do have one report of an issue in the townsend area. we have a car stuck in water lock rave. and once again northbound i95 just crawling along because of the accident at white marsh boulevard. we'll continue to keep you update to date and you can always log on to wjz.com. >> our first warning weather coverage continues with kai jackson. he's in the newsroom with picture that is a lot of you our viewers have been sending to us. >> reporter: we're getting a lot of pictures from around the region. but primarily carol county tonight. let's take a look at pictures being sent to us. look at that showing extremely dark clouds. storms moved through earlier. very ominous looking. strong winds knocking over this basketball hoop in one viewers driveway in mount erie. you don't need tornadic winds to do damage. you can just have heavy winds
6:07 pm
to do damage. the base of the basketball hoop weighs 100 pounds. there's a national weather service office down there, they are also seeing strong storms down in that area as well. so people around this region are really looking out for these storms right now. denise, back to you. >> thank you, kai. our complete coverage continues with gigi barnett. she's been in baltimore county all afternoon. not being able to put the tower up because of lightning, but she is on the phone and has the latest. >> reporter: we keep seeing lightning as you mentioned and that causes us to delay until everything clears. but i'll tell you, this system keeps changing rapidly. it's maybe about an hour ago, seems as if it was dying down. and then it kicked back up again. right now the rain is getting a little bit stronger. it's much more darker in terms of the clouds. we're seeing a heavy cover here. we were talking to drivers and got mixed reaction from people saying they had waited a little
6:08 pm
while to go out into the rain but then couldn't wait any longer, had to get home and had to brave it. to other people who said they might have known about the weather system that was going in, but they decided to go out any way because as one man put it, weather is weather and you have to deal wit. we are right at the corner of -- i just saw some more lightning strikes. tonight that's going to push it back more when it comes to a live shot. we're at the corner of warren and york road. right off of i83 and as we were looking north earlier it seemed as if it was clearing up. as you look south it looked, you could see the cells moving in. now i'm hearing thunder. all of that has changed in the last hour. so it's moving rapidly. drivers say that they are taking their time getting home. it is a slow going. but they don't mind because they'd rather be of course as we say safe than sorry. back to you. >> gigi barnett thank you very much. of course you guys do be safe out there.
6:09 pm
lots of lightning strikes as she's been telling us. let's check back in with bob turk with more on the tornado warnings we have in effect. >> we have a tornado warning until 6:30, this is the area, a hailstorm down toward, catenville, including vwi. the airport area although we're not seeing much close to the airport. this storm moving to the north east around 25 miles per hour. actually to the north- northeast. affecting south western sections of baltimore county and extreme north western counties of aa county. that warning officially in effect until 6:30 unless they cancel it a little sooner. right on i95 to the vw parkway. that's where the strong stuff is, just south of the beltway. northeast and west of glen burney. northeast of lowell.
6:10 pm
that cell right there could potentially create very, very damaging winds. let's take a close look inside of it. we look at doppler radar which shows you what's going on inside these particular cells. and the action right through there. exactly what i talked about a minute ago. that's where we're seeing the strongest rotation. if any rotation at all. it's not severe as you can see the colors, we're not looking at reds and greens in opposition. but there's some rotation there. not a whole lot but there's some, i expect it probably lift this warning very shortly. i'm not really seeing a whole lot with that particular cell. but it certainly something we have to watch. still a lot of rain in the area. thunderstorms activity continues. and we'll be watching these systems, the one we're watching this pretty strong cells across portions of the hartford county. that area still in effect around the bell air, hickory area, darlington over to street. heavy rain in the area. could be some flash flooding. a lot of those small streams, morris run etc. maybe even the gun powder that
6:11 pm
range one to 2-inches fell in the last hour and that's what causes flash flooding. for the west, batch of storms moving through the cumberland area. that is what would cause us to see heavier activity. not quite done with this system. this is about the most active way i have seen, certainly this year. last year we had some stuff in the spring. but this is the most active stormy day we've had the entire year. we'll come back and take a look at the updated radar in just a few minutes, denise. >> thank you, very much bob. our first warning weather coverage continues by going to megan mccorkel has we've been telling you she's in finxburg and she joins us by skype with more on the latest i heard from you megan. there was a house destroyed by a tree. >> reporter: that's right, i'm standing right outside that house, and i want to show you just how big this tree is. check it out. this entire tree came downright next to this house and crashed
6:12 pm
right into the top floor of the home. people who have been inside the house tell us that branches are in several rooms upstairs. the couple that lives here were in bed, they were typing on their laptops, they said they just heard all of this noise outside. it was so loud, the tree came down and actually hit the walk in closet that is right in their bedroom. now the tree service crews have been called out here. the house has already been condemned because there's so much damage. they've actually had to bring in a crane to get this tree off of the house. i think they're waiting for the lightning to leave this area so that they can bring that crane in and start lifting the tree off the house denise. >> and you said earlier when we talked to you that the couple had been in there bedroom on the second floor in their laptop when they noticed the clouds getting dark and they got out of there, thank goodness. >> reporter: yeah, that's what
6:13 pm
they're saying. thank goodness. they've been running through their house looking for their animals who scurried throughout the house. you can see as crews start their work. they're going to try to get the tree off this house. but the gentleman i spoke to said there could be hundreds of thousands of the dollars of damage to the house, denise. >> just one example of the damage in carroll county and i'm sure we'll see pictures like that from all throughout the area before these storms are through. >> don't go any where. we will continue with more of our coverage, moving through with first warning weather. ,,,

thanks for rejoining us here. we've been with you for more than four hours now covering these nasty storms throughout the region. let's check back in with bob right now to find out what's going on in his world, bob. >> all right we still have warnings in effect. severe thunderstorms warnings for portions of harford county for a little bit longer. let's take a look at that cell, that's a pretty strong cell. it's moving up toward dublin, hickory, just going through bell air. could see a one to 2-inches of rain with that particular cell. right now as it heads off to the northeast around 25 miles per hour. it'll be moving into lancaster county very shortly. so you folks up there. that is moving in your direction. other stuff we're seeing now, very strong activity over portions of allegheny county. you can see around the cumberland area over to pumpkin center. that's moving off to the east and northeast and warnings for that particular cell now issued. if you're in the hancock area
6:17 pm
or any of those neighbors areas, southeast of cumberland, that storm is really -- it's a quick one it's moving through rather quickly. as you can see it's not real thick, that is moving in your direction. that's also part of the system that's going down into west virginia. it's going to move into our local area. just south of cam bring moving in our direction -- cambridge, moving in our direction. heading up toward cambridge. that's the first one we're seeing in the eastern shore that's really been an intense storm. but they did have a lot of sun today, so there's still a lot of instability and damage. we see a real concentration of rain. look at all that rain, thunder embedded right knew in the city just wet stuff. one cell just south of baltimore. that's the one we've been tracking moving through. but it's beginning to weaken. the storm for rotation, very little now in the way of
6:18 pm
rotation. hardly any it's just about completely gone. so i think that warning probably going to be lifting any second now. i don't see it lifted but we still have warnings in the region, officially until 6:30 tonight. so no matter where you live. sooner or later maryland, delaware, particularly virginia and southern pa you're going to see storms moving through. more severe weather possible between 8:00 and midnight across central maryland and southern maryland. the good news is all this will be gone by tomorrow morning. looks like a very nice cooler kind of breezy weekend shaping up the region, denise. >> all right, we just have to get there. thank you bob. our first warning weather coverage continues with christie bersland. she's been very busy with back ups and accidents.
6:19 pm
>> it's definitely been a traffic mess. let's go back to i95, the delay is still very heavy back to eastern avenue so you may want to go in another direction. as far as the rest of the region goes. if you're traveling on the topside of the interloop we're still looking at a 20 minute delay there over to 95. on the west side of the inner loop still heavy in that direction over to 95 and security boulevard. we also have massive delays in the outer loop from providence road to national pike. as far as the harrisburg expressway goes just bumper to bumper still in that northbound direction from tamonium road well past the belfast. and problems continue on the beltway, very heavy from 29 to marysville road. let's go back now and take another live look. traffic is beginning to move there. white marsh, northbound i95. use caution, if you're taking

the activity in that area because the trees are down in that same area. >> exactly. we don't know exactly caused it, whether it was a tornado or high winds or what. >> where exactly did this happen? >> the bell air bypass and route 512. in the baltimore area of hartford county. if people can avoid that area so we can operate safely that would be much appreciated. >> about this time did this happen? >> about 15, 20 minutes ago. >> wow so you have a lot of weather there right now and they're trying to get these people -- are there people in the building? >> that's right, there's three subjects in this building. i'm not sure if it's a residence or a business. but they're trying to remove three people from this

here's a live look outside right now from our tower cam, actually our harbor cam. you can see it's clearing out in the west of us right now. but here on television hill we have rain coming down. bob has been tracking storms all afternoon. he's in the first warning weather center, bob. >> once again we still have a tor -- tornado warning in effect. this storm is still indicating some rotation. moving off to the north, around 20 miles per hour. it's about five to 8 miles north of bell air and it's heading out toward the whiteford area. we had a report, a possible touchdown at bell air road and

mountain road. that's very close to bell air area. just south of that downtown bell air. we'll get some, obviously some people up there to make sure to look at the damage and they'll determine whether or not in fact, there was a small tornado funnel or possibly a tornado. we'll continue to watch this area. eventually the next 15 minutes it should be entered -- entering lancaster county. if you're in mccann corner, pool and dublin that cell are viable. but let's look into it. we'll take another look at the velocity which looks inside these storms. and you can see some, not a whole lot between 80 and dublin. some contrast there between the radar site or against the radar site. we're not seeing reds and
6:27 pm
greens in opposition but it's probably enough that could mean there's still rotation with that particular cell. even earlier we did not have a lot but it may have produced something that did touchdown. however we don't have any verification, there's still activity all around the region. we're going to be dealing with these storms this evening. we may have a bit of a break for a little while just west of dc. you see that line forming, this is a squall line along the front. tornado warning for little piece of allegheny county and neighboring sections of west virginia out southeast of the cumberland area. that cell moving off to the northeast around 25-miles-an- hour. going to be affecting folks in portions of allegheny county the next hour or two. so there's still plenty of shower activity. another storm south of the

region around the cambridge area, that's moving toward cambridge route 50. it's a pretty strong cell moving into the area in the next 10 to 15 minutes. still lots of stuff going on, we'll be tracking it. once again it's always on, always active. we have all the warnings for your, keep tuned all evening long and we'll have updates throughout the entire evening, vic. >> thank you, bob. first warning weather coverage continues with more on this nasty night of storms. we'll have that so much more right after this. ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

good evening thanks for staying with wjz. here are some of the stories people are talking about tonight. powerful storms moving through the area. let's check in with bob turk with some of the storms that are still in effect. >> and let's go take a look at that, let's zoom in real close so we can take a look.
6:32 pm
yes, actually just northeast of bel air area. there it is right through there over to cunawingo now. includes west of street and moving east about 25-miles-an- hour. there you see it. cooper, pilot, oak wood, and peach in pennsylvania. into northern sections of cecil county officially until 7:00. unless they cancel it earlier. let's look once again. the marvel of hd radar is you can see inside the storm. so you can see there's not a whole lot of what we call opposition of those winds. just a little bit, in fact, see how neutral this is? up here, there's a little bit of opposition between winds going to the radar site or against the radar site. but not a whole lot. i really do expect that this
6:33 pm
will be cancelled very, very shortly. now the rest of the region we have a whole mess of storms. particularly across north western maryland now. another batch across the area. we still have lots of rain, just northeast dc, bethesda toward college park. that's heading toward laurel, columbia. there's another batch coming in. if you're headed out this evening; i would advise you staying in. you don't want to face this activity because you're going to be dealing with heavy rain, lightning, very gusty winds. you may run into some roads that are honestly flooded and covered with water. i can't tell you how many times we had people going through these waters and get trapped and have to be rescued. we don't want to see that. so turn around, don't drown. if you're in a study building
6:34 pm
you're safe. if you're outdoors, don't get under a tree, get into a car or sturdy building. megan mccorkel is still outside, she's joining us live. megan. >> reporter: rain is coming down moving through right now, that is not stopping tree removal services. a tree fell on this home earlier. right on the roof, it just went right through several rooms in the second floor of this home. the couple said that they were on their laptops. when this tree just came barreling through the roof and went right into the closet in their bedroom. that's how close it was to them. you see the tree removal service still working, they have a crane up there. what they've been doing is

what may be coming, bob. >> there's two warnings, one across allegheny county that's south of the cumberland area, and we have a second in dublin. that's going to move quickly out of the county into lancaster. let's take a look at the latest advisories just coming in right now. we have a tornado watch continuing for the area. but that tornado warning remains in effect for harford county until 7:00 as we see. it's actually near delta, it's now about a 12-mile northeast of bell air moving at about 20 miles per hour. perhaps some of the damage in the fulsome area as it moves
