tree topples and crushed a car. the powerful winds took down a number of trees in communities all across our region. and the heavy rain caused a lot of flooding situations that set off this swift water rescue. three teenagers were hoisted to safety after their car was swept away. wjz is live tonight. more on the tomorrows intensity and the latest from the national weather service. let's begin with alex. he spent the entire day surveying the damage for us. >> reporter: the worst damage seemed to hit in small isolated pockets. there were a lot of them with multiple tornadoes now confirmed. >> violent weather dropped down seem to hit and skip in carol and roll through hardest in hartford county. >> black raining sideways. large bridge is falling . >> we were outside and ran to cover before i could get the garage door closed.

>> i was looking out the back window and the tree in the back started to twist. and that's when i ran for the base amount. -- basement. >> roads throughout the state were blocked and this neighborhood, at least half a dozen homes were hit. at this house the tree was so large, it took a crane to clear it away. people knew it could have been worse. >> we have one room that was severely damaged. >> two businesses were destroyed. a dozen homes damaged: . >> there was no fatalities. injuries were minor injury ies. >> the national weather service confirmed a tornado touched down and within the past hour five more have hit the state. >> definitely been strong winds, 80, 90 miles an hour.

good strong winds coming through here. >> it's been a nightmare. >> reporter: and we could see more confirmed tornadoes in the next day or two as field reviews are gone over and checked for accuracy and intensity. adam, back to you. >> a lot to look at. live for us tonight. thank you so much. the preliminary damage estimates are standing tonight at $1 million. meanwhile, the clean up continues in carol county tonight. >> reporter: earl has one word to describe the storm damage to his carol county house. >> lucky it didn't hit the house. >> yes you are. >> he says he received an early morning phone call telling him to rush home. he road out this weekend's storm at a family farm. he had down trees and phone lines. that was the damage to the front yard.

>> that's in the back now. >> what do you think of that? >> his clean up will take some time. but not as long as dug. a 90 foot tree smashed through his bedroom. his family was inside. >> it was panic. it was just panic. my wife screaming trying to find the cats. >> his trees took the brunt of the storm. >> it went everywhere but your house. >> you can see that's much room in there. i was lucky. >> the next step now for homeowners is getting in contact with their insurance companies. but here's the problem, it's the weekend and some offices are not open. plus, all of this damage may not be covered in their policies. wjz, eyewitness news. . >> lites move on to baltimore county. its share of storm damage. >> reporter: this downed tree here is just one example of the damage we found throughout

baltimore county. >> dick is one of many residents who came out to see the damage done to his neighbor's homes. >> i'd bring it down in the yard instead of on the house. what a shame. >> reporter: damage to neighborhoods is turning out to be a payday for tree service companies around the region. >> i'll be here for most of the week actually. but i'll be here late in the morning. >> this is the type of damage eyewitness news has found as the winds have sheared off these trees from the base and off the top. >> you can see roof damage but also workers clearing those trees as they came down around the county. >> first of all, was anybody hurt went through my brain. but i don't know how they are going to repair something like that. >> damage assessments are still being made and not be in until at least next week. wjz eyewitness news. now back to you. >> incredible how that tree cut that house in half.

businesses across maryland are picking up the pieces as well as those winds left their mark. mike goes inside some of the worst damage. >> people started arriving back in their businesses. the twisted trees, those were the least of their troubles. >> at this dentist office, the roof was blown off and ceiling fell in. they just locked the doors and treated last patient of the day. >> it was a feeling of shock but comforted by the fact no one got hurt. >> a couple signs blew out. and it's very sharp . and the winds were such that it drove part of this sign straight into the side of this car dealership. >> this roof now lying in auto repair shop used to belong to that building. and also that pick-up truck bed belongs to that truck over there. they got enough water inside, they had to

bring special dehumidifying equipment in. the winds were so strong here, that it took one of their suv's and threw it through the fence. wjz eyewitness news. back to you. >> very powerful. many incredible images. viewers sent us hundreds of amazing pictures and firefighters shared dramatic video of rescue. . >> three teenagers hold on to the support beams of this bridge for dear life. they were nearly swept away before a tricky rescue by firefighters. one by one the teens were hoisted to safety. the driving rain flooded waterways and streets. viewers also sent wjz numerous pictures of funnel clouds to college park to the space flight center in green beltd to mount

erie. after the storm, images of toppled trees came pouring in from almost every corner. dump trees smashed cars and others hit power lines. . >> all right. let's go to meteorologist bernadette. you spent a lot of time on the phone. what's the very latest? >> they are trying to get all this information out. the latest they can give to us is we're up to 6 confirmed tornadoes. this is split between two national weather service offices. the one that governs most of our area has come out with 5 today. that confirmed the tornado in queen end's county. this is round after round of thunder storm tornado warnings and flooding rains as we all know. here's when it started to mold into one. and then that line out to the west came swinging through after the first couple rournds of tornadoes. let's switch it over.

this is what we have confirmed so far. and could be updated in the next 24 to 48 hours. we will have full reports giving us specifics on the intensity, the lengths of these tracks. what we have one in spring dale. gamber. that was an e f 0 with winds at 65 and 85 miles an hour. the one that's been the strongest and most from an ef 1 and wind estimates 86 to 109 miles per hour. then rainfall, this is another huge part of this story. over 5 inches of rain. and 1.55-inches. we are calming down but a lot to get through. >> thanks so much. and power was knocked out to thousands of

were playing in woods. that boy later died on his way to the hospital. at first, police were told the shots came from an unknown person and that touched off a search for a gun man. . >> determined later when they found the handgun near the scene that the 8 year old had accidentally shot the 11 year old. >> and the boy later told police he got that handgun from a neighbor's home. no charges have been filed. >> also tonight baltimore city police are searching for a gun man after a deadly shooting. police say 18-year-old bowman was shot in the head early this morning. that's right outside the downtown. he was pumping gas when a man started talking to his passenger. bowman told the girl to get back in the car and that's when a suspect shot him. if you know anything about the shooting, you are asked to call police. a new mery go round could

at some point. 6 confirmed tornadoes. the national weather service has been out all day. trying to assess the damage and figure out what happened and write-up their reports. >> we're going to get the official reports in the next day and get updates to this. this is what we have at this point. ef 0 tornado. fort mead. that's the one that passed by marshal. carol county, ef 0. ef 1. that's the biggest one so far. also want to show you this graphic. this is the enhance scale. gives you an idea where we rank on that. ef 0 is on the lower end. this is still a tornado we're talking about. with ef 1 topping 100 miles per hour.

had incredible wind gusts and had a lot of rain. look at some of these rainfall amounts. impressive since it's been very dry officially at the airport. some of these areas know it hasn't been so dry lately. and when you add all of this on top, that's why we've had flooding issues. four inches of rain. officially 1.55-inches of rain . look at what we're left with. all back on very refreshing air mass. 60 is where we sit this evening. very comfortable outside. due points have come way down. down in the 40s and today topped out at 75. we're going to be below average this entire forecast. a little unsettled actually. here's the low that drove this entire system. it's hanging around and close muff by, there is a chance each and everyday for a shower
