station this is wjz-tv, wjz-hd and wjz.com, baltimore. from the city to the counties to your neighborhood, now is complete coverage. it's wjz, maryland's news station. >> terrifying tornadoes, severe storms tear through maryland. >> it's like you're standing one minute with your friends laughing and joking. >> a story of survival. we have some amazing new video tonight. good evening. thank you for joining us. i'm adam may. tonight, the national weather service confirms ten tornadoes touch down right here in maryland. wjz has complete coverage of the storms. meteorologist bernadette woods looks at the intensity of the twisters. let's go to derek valcourt. he has more on the victims that were hurt when it hit. >> reporter: those men were inside the same building when

the storm hit. they are among many in the area counting their blessings. some grabbed their cameras to capture the funnels, others went for cover. >> i said, that's a tornado. let's go to the basement. >> reporter: one of the strongest tornadoes left little warning. >> it's like you're standing one minute with your friend laughing and joking and then the next minute it's devastation. >> reporter: they were inside what used to be a small auto shop with concrete walls. >> he said get down and i went into the corner and saw the wall literally twist and the roof over and gone. keith was in the middle of the building there and i saw him go down and i went down. >> reporter: tony's scrapes and bruises are minor compared to keith's broken bones crushed by the concrete wall. >> i could see that much of keith's arm hanging out. >> reporter: keith is now in

the hospital as the neighbors assess their own damage. there are a lot of automobile businesses in this section. >> this was my office trailer. it was 120 feet down there. >> reporter: john is one lucky to be alive, missing the storm by a matter of minutes. >> i had to run an errand, or else i'd be in there. >> reporter: even entire walls. keith matthews' business may be in ruins, but friends are taking up a collection for his medical bills and fiance just thankful he survived. >> he's definitely lucky to be alive. i'm so lucky i'm not planning a funeral. >> reporter: tornadoes touched down and three of them touched down over in montgomery county. back to you, adam. >> very serious. thank you. more on the clean-up in

fallston, gigi barnett reports on the worst damage there. >> reporter: in hartfordcounty, they used to have cover. but now the wind power could be seen in the damage to the house. the wind twisted her neighbor's tree and smashed it into her roof. the family escaped the roof unscathed. even the horses in the backyard were spared. >> a lot of clean-up and work, but we're alive. >> reporter: her clean-up is just beginning, but after this weekend storm, she's thinking about letting more sunlight into her backyard. >> i love the area, but maybe i don't want the tree there is anymore. >> reporter: the damage is random. while some have extensive damage and a major clean-up project, others only have small

ones like simple limb removal. >> pat and johnny had a big piece of tree come down. lucky it missed everything around their fence. >> reporter: the backyard will have another purpose. in fallston, i'm gigi barnett, wjz eyewitness news. >> more damage in baltimore county. the towson residence, tim williams assesses the damage. >> reporter: the sights and sounds are frequent. crews try to keep up with it. >> uprooted the entire tree. >> reporter: it's not just any tree on the home. this is over 100 feet tall on the right side of their property. >> what was it like when the

tree came crashing through the garage? >> towson was one of the hardest hit areas. tree crews succeeded in clearing much of the damage, still, homeowners left with getting back to normal as best they can. >> reporter: the two-car garage, they pulled it out with a little more than than a few scratches and ripped off the side of the car. the garage was not so important to be pulled away from the side of the house. the latest book, you never know, sums up this experience. >> let's go to meteorologist bernadette woods. she has more on the wicked

weather. bern, i know you have more information. >> ten tornadoes including pleasant hills in harford county and two in damascus close to each other. the rating scale is the damage scale that has wind estimates attached to it. when we talk about zero damage, we talk in a range of 35 to 65 and winds with ef1 is 86 to 110 miles per hour. there's never a full measurement and they happen so quickly. it's an estimate of what happened. the other thing, rainfall with the storm. a lot of rain. we keep updating these numbers,

not adding to them necessarily but giving different ones because so many people had a lot of rain out of this. let's go to first warning doppler radar. still showers and thunderstorms. northern parts of carroll, harford county. those storms were weakening by the time they hit the other part of the county. we didn't see much in the way of damage. one just making its way into queens town and making off to the east/southeast. this will weaken and more in the forecast up ahead. adam? >> bernadette, thank you so much. stay with wjz for more coverage. there were 10 tornadoes confirmed. national weather service still looking to assess the damage. they could be confirmed and three people hurt by the system. stay with wjz. you can find the latest forecast and live doppler radar at any time at wjz.com. now to a major story

overseas in africa, a plane goes into a nigerian neighborhood. they were trying to look for any survivors. an air flight with 153 people on board. more people may have been killed on the ground. well, a man who admits he shot and killed florida teenager trayvon martin is back behind bars tonight. randall pinkston reports from sanford that george zimmerman turned himself in this afternoon. >> reporter: shortly before 2:00 p.m., george zimmerman walked back into police custody ordered by a judge to turn himself in. zimmerman accused in the shooting death of 17 year old trayvon martin earlier this year was in hiding with his family in april after posting bail $450,000. zimmerman attorney mark o'mara. >> he's worried about his

family, wife, everybody in hiding because of the enormous anger and frustration and hatred from this case. >> they believe he and his wife shellly lied about their bail. >> he came back to obtain the benefits of a lower bond for circumstances based upon those material falsehoods. >> to my knowledge -- >> at the bond hearing in april, shelly said they had illegal ones. o'mara said the judge may not agree the a new bail hearing. >> it's a credibility question. now the credibility has been attacked. he has to rehabilitate it and that's up to him. >> reporter: he plans to file far new bond hearing.

randall pinkston, cbs news, sanford, florida. >> they will not have the case until sometime next year. an elderly man is killed in northwest baltimore in a robbery attempt in the intersection here by virginia avenue and pimlico road. the gunman shot and later died at the hospital. no other arrests made in the case. five new speed cameras are out. this will bring the total number up to 22. once activated, violators will get warnings and after that, the tickets will be $40 a piece. former news anchor dick raises money for breast cancer. this year is the twelfth annual ride for more than $250,510.

we've got showers in maryland. bernadette will have the forecast in just a moment, but first, a massive wildfire continues burning in new mexico. you can see the flames burning the trees in its path.

the white water fire burned more than 190,000 acres since it was sparked by lightning strikes two weeks ago. they hope higher humidity helps get the fire under control. a gunman opens fire in a busy toronto shopping mall. one person killed, seven others hurt. it happened near the food court last night. it was in the heart of downtown toronto. that mall was immediately shut down and evacuated. >> we go to my restaurant and hide there probably for like 15 or 20 minutes. >> as of tonight, police are still looking for the gunman. a trash truck in seattle nearly collides with a baby stroller. it's caught on camera. take a look at this video from the garbage truck. the stroller rolls right in the middle of the intersection. the mom runs after it.

the trash truck was able to stop. no word on how the stroller got away from the mother. celebrating queen elizabeth's 60 year reign. a massive crowd is a part of it. >> reporter: queen elizabeth brought the entire royal family on board to celebrate her 60- year reign. bells tolled across the capital. 1,000 boats of all shapes and sizes from all over the world followed the queen in a display of patriotism. >> she's just a matriarch of the country. >> reporter: harry seemed

contestants. he was 79 years old. after an eight-day journey across the gulf of mexico, you can see the shuttle docked at the clear lake area of houston. you can see the large truck waiting to pull explorer into its final stop which will be the space center in houston. the replica, used to be at florida's space center. you can see how little the truck looks next to that huge shuttle. >> with that going? >> i think it's going to help it get off the barge and move it where it's eventually going. >> so cool to watch. >> yeah, how they're moving these all over the country. >> on planes, by boat. everywhere. >> we're not going to have the stories anymore. well, just talk about wild weather. this is rather unheard of. >> ten tornadoes. i don't know how this is going to rank against -- we've been in constant contact with the

national weather service. we'll look back historicically at where this ranks and it's got to be in history. fortunately, nothing like that today. there has been thunderstorms out there and warnings with the thunderstorms. those were canceled early. a lot of people are nervous and they started to see a new round in morning. this is not the kind of weather pattern. we have a chance of scattered thunderstorms and nothing like friday's. this is what we look at right now. storms out there and moving down from the northwest. this one right here crossing into northern parts of baltimore county and dying down. you can see the showers out there. and a lot of this dies down overnight into tomorrow and do it all again.

65 degrees right now. pretty mild. we managed a high of 78 today. we'll be below the average for the entire forecast. taking a larger look. a huge thing going on to the north. this is for the entire weather pattern friday. going to the north and not anywhere we were near to friday. it's keeping everything unsettled and cool air coming our way. this is one of the fronts in the weather pattern. this is again tomorrow and then the chance of tuesday, wednesday, and even into thursday. just the weather pattern we'll be stuck in. on the water, small craft advisory today. the winds pick up out of the west/northwest.
