tornado after tornado hit maryland in just hours, ripping off rooftoppling trees. >> clean up and the damage assessment is under way across the state. hi everybody i am mary bubala. >> i am kai jackson live in hartford county where this is almost ground zero in terms of destruction we have experienced around maryland. the most recent total, 10 tore fay does in -- tornadoes in six maryland counties this is probably one of the most active weather days anyone can remember in recent memory. now this is a sound you are hearing across much of maryland today, downed trees and debris is being fed into wood chippers. insurance agents, homeowners, work crews are out busily cleaning up the mess and totaling up all the damage. wjz is live with extensive

first warning weather coverage. derek is in hartford county, my colleague, bernadette woods is here with me in hartford county, tracking tornadoes where they hit. >> now to my colleague, derek not far from me with amazing video and sound for you. derek. >> yeah, kai let there be no mistake about the power of this storm. in fact, this tree is standing here as a testament to just how strong those winds were. you can see, this was a perfectly healthy tree, it is now completely splintered, the area around here a mess after that tornado rolled through friday night. when the tornado hit, people living and working in the pleasant hills area had little time to react. >> the house started to shake, completely went white outside, >> i heard a big wind and heard my trampoline fly over

top of my house. >> the storm rolled in and out in a matter of minutes leaving a path of destruction, cars smashed countless trees snapped doors ripped off garages and this small auto shop, destroyed, while keith mathews and his friend tony were inside. >> that wall came in on him, the roof went over into there. >> neighbors helped pull keith from the huble he was rushed to hospital while the clean up began. >> not only did the storm rip the siding off this shed it lifted the entire shed right off its foundation. >> the tornado damaged plenty of homes including john cur rans. >> got to have a new roof. >> many businesses will clean up the mess for week, homeowners here hoping this is the last they will see of a tore fay doe. >> i have a lot -- tornado. >> i have a lot of anxiety about storms i don't know what to expect now. >> when those trees come down they really come down with a thud, this is an auto shop, parking lot and a lot of the cars here were crushed, when some of those branches came down. these are some of the smaller

ones pretty heavy when they come down let alone those massive trunks were we showing you before. another problem in some parking lots is a lot of debris when those winds pick it up it goes flying, acts like projectiles going through some of the wind and windshields a lot of shattered glass. >> it is quite a sight out here in fact, my colleague, meteorologist, bernadette woods and can i see that tree he is talking about just over beyonder, as they say, not far at all but the damage is unbelievable >> one of those things you always see in pictures and still stunning but when you see it in person it is a completely different story. this storm did pack a punch we were there all day friday you were there all day friday a lot of us were still involved in it. this is what was left from that day of storms. widespread tornado outbreak. look at graphics, ten confirmed tornadoes they range from across the state from hartford

county to howard, prince georges over the bay to queen ann county we have two in carroll county, three in montgomery county, and also, one right near bwi marshall. now, the thing is, that total, they range in scale with those we are talking about an enhanced scale that has ef 0 and 1 up to ef 5 for us we now measure three, ef 1 when you are talking ef 1 winds generally estimated 86 to 110 miles per hour, as far as the ef 0 goes, still, even though it is a lower end of a tornado, it is a tornado, winds generally somewhere between 65 and 85 miles per hour and national weather service this is still an active scene. they are still investigating a lot of areas we don't have all the final numbers we will continue to keep you updated. >> expect this to be adjusted quite possibly. as we mentioned quickly have we seen a weather day as active as this in recent memory?

>> not that i know as far as tornadoes we have had our rounds of hurricanesnow over the last couple years but not as much tornadoes. looking over numbers again we have to let some of this settle before we can really rank it but we average about 10 a year we had 10 in one day. that alone wiz historical. >> bernadette -- was historical. bernadette woods will be with me for the duration. my colleague, alex saw quite a bit of damage as well. >> well, kai, in baltimore and carroll counties winds hit quick and fast but left homeowners with months of repairs. it didn't take long last friday for the wind to turn violent. >> have never seen wind like that, just intensely windy >> ever since it has been intensely noisy in the neighbourhood of fellowship forest. from friday night on crews have been removing massive trees. >> trees down everywhere. it only lasted 30 seconds. >> reporter: that was more than

long enough to leave some homes facing weeks or months of repair work. even close calls are costing thousands of dollars in tree removal work a huge tree landed feet from colleen's home. >> at that moment the tree came down and everything shook you know, it was frightening. >> reporter: it wasn't as if they just blew down >> i have seen them blow but never twist. >> reporter: in carroll county where the trees twisted and snapped or flattened, a confirmed tornado left this home with major damage. >> takes weak trees, healthy trees, when you get tornadoes all bets are off. >> reporter: when trees are big enough to get a big crane to clear it is a lot of weight. >> 15 tonnes, 30,000 pounds. >> reporter: given the sheer size, falling amongst so many houses this neighbourhood is thankful for what didn't happen. >> a little too close for comfort. yes, but thankfully no body was hurt. >> reporter: national weather service confirmed carroll county tornado survey results are pending for towel son.

>> no loss of life in all of this. mary if we are measuring this we are glad there was no loss of life but in hartford county a great deal of damage, destruction to business and homes. >> yeah, still so much debris behind you kai. thank you stay with wjz for complete first warning weather coverage for a look at the tornado damage and get updated forecasts, log on to wjz.com. a heart breaking story, an 11-year-old boy accidentally shot and killed playing with a gun. denise is in the newsroom with more. well, mary, police say michael alexandre's 8-year-old brother axe departmentally shot him while the two were -- accidentally shot him while 2t two were playing with a gun. the family believes bullets ricocheted off a tree. the boy was roughed to hopkins hospital where he died the boy's got the gun from a neighbors shed. it does not appear any charges will be filed against the gun's owner. all right thank you. new at 5, what the victims

kissing the women contestants he was 79. sanitation worker things fast to protect a baby stuck in a runaway stroller the worker saw the stroller rolling down a steep hill and then right into the middle of a busy street so he acted fast honking his horn, speeding into the intersection to stop traffic seconds before the stroller passed by. eventually it stopped after hitting a curb with the baby unharmed. jury selection begins tomorrow at jerry sandusky's trial in central pennsylvania. the former penn state assistant football coach is accused of 10 counts of sexual abuse against boys. >> as many as 8 accusers could take the stand at jerry sandusky 's sex abuse trial. they will be required to use their real names when testifying. the judge ordered lawyers to co- operate when possible to protect privacy and personal information. sandusky a former assistant football coach at penn state is

charged with abusing 10 boys during 15 years some of the victims are believed to be from his second mile charity, an organization he founded to help troubled boys. sandusky denies the charges .credibility of the accusers will be a critical issue. defense attorneys are expected to ask them about motivation for wanting to testify and recollection of what happened so many years ago. memory could come into play for a key witness former assistant coach, mike mcqueary. he was a sis taint for the team a decade ago when he saw sandusky assault a young boy in a locker room shower. he first testified it took place in march 2002 now prosecutors says the february 2001. >> the jury will ask us now if mike mcqueary who has no dog in the hunt is making up a story, could these other witnesses be making up a story as well. >> there will be no cameras in

cbs money watch.com in new york i am allison. summer book lists are about to grow as the city kicks off its annual summer reading program. gigi barnett explains how a boost in reading when school is out helps students when they go back. baltimore's summer reading program has just begun, even the youngest readers have their favorites. >> the three birds. program challenges children, teens and adults to read as many books as they can over the summer the winners in the three age groups receive a prize, everything from orioles tickets to a special celebration at the national aquarium. the library even offers suggestions on what to read. >> baltimore really is still the city that reads. >> it is. those kids were waving their pompoms for books. >> it is not all just for fun. increased reading over summer, helps students retain what they learned in school. >> studies have shown and research verified this, that

i am kai jackson back live with bernadette woods in pleasant hill right near bel air in hartford county. quite a mess around here. just a moment ago you spoke with someone out, surveyed damage and went through this on friday. >> he did. we saw him over the weekend, he wasn't the main story we have been seeing but the secondary story because he is okay. fortunately he had left his trailer for a little bit to run a coupler rends. he was saying the best point to him was that it wasn't earlier in the day. it was active friday, people going about their day on the roadbusinesses where as on a friday evening, especially towards summer time a lot of people cut out early and had gone home. take a look around here, it is quite a scene and a really hard one, to survive if you are not doing the proper things.

>> absolutely. all right. we will go right now to bob turk in the studio, again, with more on what this storm had in store for us and a look at what is going on with weather today. >> certainly the most active weather day i think i have ever experienced here that's for sure. warnings consistent, one after the other all afternoon into the evening hours right now it is quiet a few clouds around. probably stay dry, 73 now, 47 dew point low, humidity 49%, northwest -- 39%, northwest winds, barometer holding steady. oakland, 75, 70 ocean city, 75 washington. new high is 83 degrees. 73 baltimore, 70 bel air, 67 westminster and low 70s down by the bay. now for the next several days, probably even into thursday, a blocking high pressure to north of us and deep area of low pressure over eastern portions of canada is driving chilly air

or below normal air, the jet stream dipped pretty far south. temperatures going to runny where from 4 to 7 degrees below average for the rest of the week until friday when this begins to lift up. and then warm air. temperatures out west, increasing temperatures still pleasant conditions however, every day this week, really, tuesday, wednesday and thursday we do have a chance of a shower in the afternoon because of this cold air, coming in aloft, the sun is kind of self- defeating and heats up the ground, moisture rises up, 10, 20, 30,000 feet you get clouds forming pretty good breeze here 10 to 20-mile an hour winds, you see, which makes it feel chilly for this time of year. down south, dividing line between cool air and very warm humid air, showers and storms, this afternoon from oklahoma, down to georgia, pretty strong activity there across south carolina and georgia this afternoon for the most part we are seeing sunny skies late in the afternoon, clouds begin to build to our north.

here denise. you are right. the tornado damage spread wide across the state of maryland and unbelievably, no one was killed when these dangerous storms hit us friday. however, it was still quite a busy day, not only were there tornadoes we also saw extensive flash flooding, in prince georges county. three teens are in good condition after being rescued from the anacostia river. now the water rose so quickly as the storms hit maryland, teens became trapped as they walked along the shore. the three were able to grab on to a bridge support of the 38th street bridge they were rescued using a system of ropes and pulllies, that firefighters set up that gives you an idea how busy. >> all that going. >> reporter: they couldn't have gotten themselves out. >> no. >> when the first unit got there the water rose a foot or two within first 10 minutes of being there. >> reporter: now the teens were all treated for hypothermia we understand they are fine. today meteorologist, bernadette woods is here in addition to

all the things we talked about friday, tornado warnings, possible damage because we didn't know at that time we had flash flooding and the flooding in and of itself can be a deadly situation. correct? >> it can. that is actually our biggest weather killer in maryland is flooding and flash flooding. different kinds we experienced that day was flash flooding because it came down so quickly area that is got 3 to 5 inches of rain over the course of a couple hours that is about what we get for a month. >> wow. >> within just an afternoon or evening that was a huge part of the storm that is why this one was such a big storm it had everything with it, and it really was one we are so fortunate i mean we are not with the injuries of course but no one lost their life and that is a really big thing, so, to all those in maryland, actually who listened to the warnings and heeded those warnings this is what we can do. >> yeah, we are glad they did. in fact, thank you very much. this is again another example of how much destruction we had around the area, quite a bit

and as bernadette mentioned earlier the national weather service is assessing damage and reports could be extensive beyond that >> can >> we have a graphic we will show here we have been going through some of this. here is the latest, ten tornadoes confirm add cross the state and we keep trying to tell people this, this is still an active investigation by the national weather service because they are spread so thin across is statement going out to these areas, looking through the damage and talking to the people who went through these storms and you can see, across the map right here, over 8 counties effected by these tornadoes they range in status from ef-0 to ef-1 those would have winds over 100 miles per hour for the ef-1 tornado. we had a lot going on a this point we still -- at this point we still could see additions to that and still in active contact with the national weather service. >> right and by the way doesn't

more than $100,000 raised online >> i think the family made a mistake out of fear and frustration. >> reporter: zimmerman is in his own cell away from other inmates here at the seminole county jail. unless a judge grants him a new bond he will be here through his trial, not expected to start until some time next year. richard horns by is a criminal defense attorney in florida. he said if there is another hearing the judge may want to send a message. >> i could see the judge setting the bond at a half million to a million dollars because he was not happy about the fact that he was lied to and so he is going to ensure that this doesn't happen again. >> reporter: zimmerman is charged with 2nd degree murder in the death of trayvon martin. the financial cover up complicates his defence strategy >> i think he severely undermined his own credibility. >> reporter: defense team claims since the shooting and all other matters zimmerman has been forthright and co- operative with authorities in

two firefighters killed in a helicopter crash in western utah. they were responding to a fire in the white rock mountain whence the chopper went down. it was carrying 1600-gallon offs fuel and 2,000-gallons of water and fire retardant. it is not clear what caused that crash. emergency crews continue to search for bodies at the site of a deadly plane crash on the coast of nigeria. 153 people including some americans died sunday, when the plane went down in the busy neighbourhood. >> reporter: a crane lifted the wreckage in a mid-of a crowded neighbourhood. crews are searching for bodies of passengers, 153 people died, the state department confirmed there were u.s. citizens onboard. hundreds of residents rushed to

central canada. low pressure over eastern sections of quebec, and new england spinning allowing that chilly air to come down, jet stream coming further south than it had, for the last several weeks since it is still far south the cool air can come in, meanwhile to the west, warm out, temperatures running 5 to 10 degrees above normal during the week, slowly but surely this will lift further north and we will start seeing a warm up by the end of the week. right now, winds bringing those chilly temperatures in, generally, 6, 7, 8 degrees, average, 7 out in cumberland to 20, 21, a little breezy and the winds will die down. any shower activity can create gusty winds, dividing line between cooler, drier air, warm humid temperatures here in the 90s a lot of spots this area of showers pretty intense, georgia and the carolinas today.
