areas still dealing with powerful storms. 10 tornadoes, we now know 10 tornadoes are confirmed throughout the state. it's a common scene in several maryland counties tonight, crews are still removing trees from front yards and homes, businesses are hit as well. wjz is live with extensive coverage of this clean up effort, derek valcourt and bernadette woods is telling us more. >> reporter: when the tornado broke through this particular section of falston you see it hit this tree, snapping it right here on the base. it's a pretty big tree. that tree came slamming down crushing this horse trailer and sending the horse trailer on to its back. a real testimony to the power

of this twister. look closely at this photo and in the rear-view mirror you can see the tornado that ravaged parts of boston. >> what a hell of a tornado. >> the storm damaged his building and almost every car in the parking lot. >> a lot of rain, you couldn't see anything. you really could look out the window, when you tried to you really could not see anything. >> reporter: a neighbor was hospitalized after he was pinned underneath a wall after his shop was devastated. almost every tree took a major hit. like a massive tree fell and crushed this trailer and what you can experience is the smell from all this freshly cut wood. there's piles and piles of this mulch throughout the area. >> i have to have a new roof.

>> reporter: jones home now in need of repairs. >> reporter: have you ever experienced anything like that? >> never in my life. i hope nobody ever does. >> reporter: with some of the debris blown more than a quarter of a mile away, parts of falston will never be the same. now take a look at this, this is a close up view here, you're looking at this piece of metal and a testimony to the power of these winds, some pretty strong winds, able to whip this piece of metal that was once part of a garage door into this tree branch literally wedging the metal right in there. that's how strong of a storm and how strong of wind we're talking about. there's so much damage that folks here are looking at a long clean up. back to you kai. >> okay, thank you derek. derek i'm watching you and photo journal itself bob merkel as you're talking about that. as we look over here at this

office building, probably not 200 feet from here, look at that. sparkle base is zooming in over there. half the bricks are taken off that office complex. it gives you an idea of the power of this storm. you can see meteorologist bernadette woods with me here. it givers you an idea of how random and destructive tornadoes can be. >> it really is amazing. the longer we stand here the more you can see. first you see the trees but then you see individual bricks pulled off of buildings and thrown to another side of the region. as derek was showing you, the siding that was on a building pulled off and wrapped around a tree. it was pretty amazing what mother nature can do and that's why we don't want to mess with this. this is the latest. 10 confirmed tornadoes. take a look at the map. they spread across the state. we have them from hartford county, to queen anne's county. we have two in carol county.

we have three in montgomery county with two right along demaskus alone. as far as strength goes, vwi marshal was viewed by a power worker. 10 tornadoes in eight counties, three of them coming in with ef1 status. six at ef0. and one still to be determined and that is the one vwi marshal now. when we talk about the fujita scale it is a damage scale that has wind estimates associated with it because there's not usually measurements within this storm. the ef scale goes from zero all the way to five. in this sense we had ef0 and ef1 damage. winds over 100 miles per hour are possible. this does range all the way to ef5. but you have to see the damage from tornadoes, they are still tornadoes and they still provide a lot of damage. we have a lot going on and this

is still an active investigation by the weather service. >> this is something we're seeing a lot around here, this is insulation. we realize it's fiberglass and we have to be careful. what did you find out about the fact when we see insulation around. >> usually when there's insulation it was a tornado. because that circulating wind it can act to pop the motion and that's when you get the insulation coming out. when you have the damage and there is inhalation involved, quite often that means there was a tornado. >> interesting. >> and there's a lot of this around. >> a lot of this around and a lot of storm damage. a lot of the storm damage that we've seen was really confined to what we call quick intense hits. alex demetrick has been in and around baltimore in carroll county with an estimation of how storms hit that area. >> it didn't take long for the

storms to turn violent. >> it was just intensely windy. >> reporter: ever since it's been intensely noisy. crews have been removing massive trees. >> we have trees down pretty much everywhere. it only lasted about 30 seconds. >> that was long enough to leave some homeowners faces weeks if not months of repair work. >> at that moment the tree came down and everything just shook. it was frightening. >> reporter: it wasn't just as if they blew down. >> i've seen them blow before but i've never seen them twist. >> reporter: where the treed twisted or snapped or just damaged. >> it takes weak trees, healthy trees, when you get tornadoes it's all bets off. >> reporter: you're talking a lot of weight. >> about 15tons, 30,000 pounds. >> given the sheer size of

these trees crawling throughout many houses these neighbors are happy for what not happened. >> it was a little too close for comfort but thankfully nobody was hurt. >> reporter: alex demetrick wjs news. >> stay with wjz to find forecast updates and live doppler radar any time log on to wjz.com. we have breaking news for baltimore county. sky chopper 13 over the scene where a child is struck by a car. the 8-year-old boy road his bicycle through a stop sign then he was hit. he's been transported to john hopkins. we're working to find out more about the child and his condition right now. we have a story we're following very closely. an 11-year-old boy dies while playing with a gun. wjz is live, mike hellgren speaking to the boy's family about the investigation.

>> this is a much loved little boy, his family is devastated. tonight there are some differing accounts as to how this all unfolded but it appears to be accidental. harry keal wipes away tears when talking about the shooting that killed his grandson michael zoe. >> he was my number one 11-year- old. they like to play. him and i played everything together. it's just a freak thing that happened. >> reporter: according to the grandfather, zoek and his 8- year-old brother got a gun from a neighbor's shed and they were playing with it in the woods when the gun went off. >> they got it. the bullet hit the tree and came back and hit mikey. >> the police investigation revealed something different. >> the 8-year-old accidentally shot the 11-year-old with a gun that was shot. >> reporter: the gun was in a garage where a neighbor opened it to get some yard equipment.

>> don't let this happen to anybody's elses kids. please people, protect them. i want to love my kids not bury them. i cried all night long. i really did. >> reporter: police say there are no plans to file any charges in this case. and the family tells us they would like to thank all the first responders, zoek died on his way to the medivac zone. >> funeral services are scheduled for later this week. police are investigating an assault at a high school. one teen was reportedly cut behind the building on washington avenue. so far there are no suspects. another reported flash mob robbery at a local convenience store. denise has more on the take over at a local 7/eleven.

>> reporter: some of the suspects were masked knocking items off store shelves and stealing items before fleeing. this is the same 7/eleven store that made headlines when it sold the winning ticket a month ago. he was caught with some stolen candy. >> anyone with information about this robbery should call police. baltimore county preparing to place more speed cameras around school zones. the debate continues for these money making devices. >> reporter: townsend is one of the five new locations dead nateed for speed cameras in baltimore county -- towson. the locations are near the bois yeekoz school, seven oaks elementary and winands elementary. kevin cammon says the cameras get people to slow down. >> the fact that we can probably just put a fake camera

and you know and a sign and get people to slow down. >> reporter: but instead they collect $40 a pop. >> i think it's just a money grab for the state. >> i'm not for them obviously. i think it's unfair. you know, how do i know it really works. >> i guess it's a necessary way to get revenue for the county. >> reporter: the county expects the cameras to cost less than $31,000 to operate, issue 55,440 citations and collect $1,170,000 in fines. >> this is just to cover our costs and raise awareness in school zones to slow down and that's what people are doing so it's working. >> reporter: for 30 days after each camera is activated, drivers will receive warnings if they exceed the speed limit by 12-miles-an-hour or more after that, the fines. reporting from towson, i'm pat warren. the money raised by the cameras is to be spend on

public safety projects. outside right now it is partly sunny, breezy and really beautiful. let's check in with bob turk, he's tracking current conditions at the weather center. bob. >> really nice day so far. kind of chilly this morning. take a look at radar. there's one or two showers up around kent county and not too far from elkton where they had big storms last night. to the north of this, a batch of activities developed over central pennsylvania. it is moving down to the south as you can see. if it survives that's quite a ways to go yet. we will lose the sun's energy. still might have a shower across some of the area later this evening. even as late as 8:00, 9:00, 10:00. so we'll keep that in the forecast. not a great chance but we'll have another chance tomorrow and thursday of the same kind of shower activity. late in the afternoon or early evening hours. then it warms up for the evening, vic. >> still ahead, taking tips

shining flashlights over their head. >> the motive here appears to be robbery. they don't understand this whole thing with the flashlight. >> i was just amazed. >> reporter: 91-year-old ellis yolk who lives in a quiet street woke up to a terrifying sight. >> what was the first sign you knew someone was in your house. >> i saw the lights in the bedroom. he was standing there beside my face. >> reporter: was he shining it on you? >> uh-huh. >> reporter: she never heard him break in. he rummaged through her cabinets and moments later he was gone. >> i didn't know if i was dreaming. >> reporter: a 74-year-old woman down the street woke up to a flashlight in her face. the woman screamed and two robbers took off. >> everyone should feel safe, secure and confidentable inside of their home.

i'm kai jackson, maryland continues to clean up after a very active weather day on friday. 10 tornadoes touching down on eight counties. bernadette woods right here in hartford county. a lot of clean up still underway. >> it is. and we continue to talk to people between these hits and it is amazing that more people were not hurt. when we put these warnings out to you please do listen because this is a life or death situations. >> bob turk back in the studio with more on our weather today. >> pretty quiet right now. maybe later tonight some shower activity. you saw it last night. just across portions of central maryland there's a track of showers heading south. showers and thunderstorms now. they'll lose the heat of the

day shortly as the sun sets this evening but they may just survive the path down from pennsylvania. it's not a great chance but later tonight still a chance for the showers moving through. with 79 degrees now, upper 60s across northern sections. 71, 74 over in washington. upper 60s some spots, away from the city, low 70s most other places. our normal high is around 80 degrees. so these temperatures you see, 89 degrees, 10 degrees below average because of the jet stream dipping down way here across the carolinas and this is where we've seen pretty active showers. we'll have the cold here in place because of cold air this time of year with the warm sunshine, probably you know it's the highest part of the

whole year, six, seven, eight weeks you sort of self-defeats. it warms up the ground. crowds created and showers can pop up any time in the afternoon. ocean city, 10, 12, 15 or 20 here in pax river so it's still a breezy day. the breeze will calm down tonight and pick up again tomorrow afternoon. and down to the south there's that border between the cooler air and very warm humid air. that part of the world pretty quiet. you see showers up in northern pennsylvania. philadelphia probably going to get these tonight. this little batch across pennsylvania looks like it wants to hit across north eastern or eastern sections of maryland still tonight. still a risk, tomorrow wednesday and thursday probably the same scenario before things finally move out and some warmer air comes in. just in time for the end of the week. weekend looks pretty nice. they get quite a bit warmer.

it is just before 5:30, 71 degrees and partly sunny. good evening everyone and thank you for staying with wjz news. digging through the debris after maryland is slammed by nearly a dozen tornadoes, wjz is live in hartford county with extensive coverage. kai jackson has more on the extensive damages from these storms, kai. >> reporter: that's right mary,

you're absolutely correct. the tornado damage is broad. not only were they tornadoes but as you've seen in the past it was also extensive flash flooding. in hartford county, three teens are in good condition. the teens became trapped as they walked down the shore. the three were able to grab on to the a ledge. they were rescued by a levy system the firefighters sent to them. >> like branches and a lot of stuff. >> so they couldn't have gotten themselves out. >> huh-uh. >> reporter: flash flooding was a big problem from this storm wasn't it. >> it really was. we saw accounts of two to 3- inches of rain, and that's

normally what we get in a month. we saw that in one afternoon. back to the tornadoes, these small pockets are scattered throughout the state and people are still cleaning up and will be for a while. take a look at that graphic right here. we have eight county represented we tornadoes. over on eastern shore to queen anne's county. carroll county on two different accounts and montgomery county had three tornadoes touched down. normally we average about three tor -- tornadoes a year. they're still confirming, we'll see if that's changing. >> back to you. >> stay with wjz for first warning weather coverage, any

time log on to wjz.com. another disaster out west. officials say their aircraft went down after dropping retardant on the fire. the cause of the crash still is under investigation. in ohio, an investigation continues into a deadly car accident involving several teenagers on the eve of graduation. denise is live in the newsroom with the latest on this tragedy, denise. >> reporter: a fourth teenager as how now died as a result of a single-car accident. two of the victims were scheduled to graduate later that afternoon. in a tearful commemoration, a moment of silence was observed when their names were called. one of the victims was released from the hospital, a cause for the accident has not been released. it's suspected excessive speed

was the cause of the crash. george zimmerman's attorney wants a new bond hearing for his client. the defense team admits the court deserves an apology and an explanation. >> reporter: his lawyer says the 28-year-old needs to admit he and his wife made a serious mistake. >> i think the zimmerman family needs to apologize to the court. >> reporter: judge lester revoked the bond. >> i think the family made a mistake, i think it was out of fear and frustration. >> reporter: zimmerman is in his own cell away from other inmates. unless a judge grants him a new bond he will be here through his trial which is not expected

grow as the summer kicks off their summer reading program. how a boost in reading while school is out helps students when they go back. >> reporter: baltimore's summer reading program has just begun. even the youngest readings have their favorite. >> my favorite is the the cat in the hat. >> reporter: the contest challenges kids to read as many books and they'll receive a prize, anything from orioles tickets to the aquarium. the library even officers suggestions on what to read. >> reporter: baltimore is still a city that reads. >> it is, it is. children we are waving their pom-poms. >> studies have shown and research has verified this that you can have a summer slide. you can lose.

person of interest was taken into custody. they also removed several items from the suspect's vehicle. in tonight's wjz health watch a new study finds the majority of new mothers are not breast-feeding as long as they had planned. teresa garcia reports for wjz. >> reporter: katherine mcneil admits breast-feeding her daughter has not been easy. >> the first month, it hurt so much, even like a cotton t- shirt hurt being against it. >> reporter: she stuck with it but most mothers don't. only 1/3 of them actually met their goals. >> women are more likely to succeed if it was their first pregnancy, they were obese, they were smokers.

>> reporter: mothers breast- feed exclusively for the first six months then add solid foods. infants that are breast-fed are less prone to infections, less likely to be obese and less likely to develop chronic conditions later in life. >> reporter: researchers say three hospital policies really influenced whether mothers are successful. >> not introducing the pacifier, starting initiating the breast-feeding within an hour, and more importantly not introducing formula while in the hospital. >> reporter: mcneil understands why some women turn to formula. >> you go to bed, they tell you, we can keep the baby overnight and give her a bottle. it's so tempting. >> she's in the 90 percentile for height and weight. >> reporter: she plans to continue breast-feeding for a year. >> tr-s -- doctors say when formula supplement are

after an injury scare. jones had mris done in florida today. an examination of both his wrists after he complained of pain. he fell awkwardly on his wrist. just a few games earlier he was hit on the wrist by a player from toronto. the mri says he's fine, it shows no dabble. it's a sigh of relief with nick markakis already out with a broken bone in his right hand. >> injuries happen and we just have to figure out a way to -- you can't replace them. you have to figure out a wayed to do without them for the next month, because it's going to take some time for them to heal. >> now it's just a matter of getting these stitches out and getting back in the swing of things. really no rehab to it and there's no structural damage. just a matter of the wound healing and getting back in the swing of things. >> markakis is one of
