least 10 tornadoes touched down in maryland. the storms left destruction in their path. kai jackson and bernadette woods are tracking the tornadoes. kai jackson will lead our coverage. >> reporter: ten tornadoes are now confirmed. it's a common scene in several counties tonight unfortunately. crews are still removing trees from front yards and homes as well as businesses. derek valcourt has been in heartford county all day surveying the damage here. he has a look at how the impact of this storm is affecting people here -- hartford county. >> reporter: folks have their power back on, and things are starting to look a little like normal. but some of the damage is going

to be around for some time. a tree here, just an example of how strong the winds were. a real testimony to the power of this tor may doe. >> look closely at this photo and in the rear-view mirror you can see the tornado that ravaged parts of baltimore. >> reporter: joe could feel his shop moving while the tornado damaged his building and almost every car in his parking lot. >> you would look out the window and you could not see anything but metal flying. >> reporter: this small office trailer was flipped over and blown nearly 200 feet away. >> the tornado ravaged the entire tree line. almost every tree took a major hit. a massive tree hit and smashed this trailer. what you can experience is the

smell from all this freshly cut wood. there are piles and piles of this mulch throughout the area as the clean up continues. >> i have to have a new roof. >> reporter: have you ever experienced anything like that? >> never in my life. i hope nobody ever does. >> reporter: the mess for tree crews and other repair companies and some of the debris blown more than a quarter of a mile away, parts of maryland will look like this. those strong winds, any little debris from branches to brick to flying off of the buildings, garage doors everything went flying and the winds were so strong, really turned that stuff into shrapnel, punched holes in a lot of car windows, back to you kai.

>> der can -- derek thank you. we can see that shrapnel all around this area. hindsight, being a few days after the storm, gives us a chance to look at the big picture. the big picture is pretty bad. and you would not have liked to have been in this area when the wind was blowing. >> reporter: absolutely not. it's hard to give you the picture but windows popped up. cars with huge dents on it. they're trying to move these cars to organize things and it's just an absolute mess. that's one of the biggest problems we have with the tornadoes. it's not only the wind that kills. it's the objects in the wind. put on a helmet. a lot of people have helmets now so put one on because that can help save you. >> and maybe something in your eyes, goggles or something like

that. >> reporter: it sounds dramatic but it'll help you out. ten tornadoes in many different areas. we see them in hartford county, howard county, over in the eastern shore, queen anne's county. we have three in montgomery county including two right near demascus. the one that's still not officially registered for its level is the one near by vwi marshall but it'll probably fall within level ef0 or ef1. there are six ef1, two ef0 and one yet to be determined. it is officially a damage scale that has wind estimates associated with it. these are not measured winds like we have in a hurricane. so when we estimate the winds in a storm like this an enhanced fujita scale would be

winds 65 to 85 miles per hour for a one that would be 86 to 110 miles per hour. so a lot of these storms, including the one probably had winds over 100 miles per hour. >> you know i think of the graphics that you and bob had up. a lot of this weather that we had bernadette was confined to like quick intense hits. it was really brutal. alex was in baltimore and carroll county which were hard hit by the storms. the damage is so expansive it's going to take months for people to clean up there. >> reporter: it didn't take long for the wi to turn violent. >> i've neverseen wind like that. it was intensely violent. >> reporter: crews have been removing massive trees. >> we had trees down everywhere. it only lasted about 30 second. >> reporter: that was more than

long enough to leave homeowners facing weeks if not months of repair work. a huge tree landed just feet from lamont's home. >> at that moment the tree came down and everything just shook. it was frightening. >> reporter: it wasn't as if they just blew down. >> i've seen them blow before but i've never seen it twist. >> reporter: in the gamble area of carroll county where the trees were twisted or snapped or just flattened, a confirmed tornado left this tree damaged. when trees are big enough to take a crane to clear, you're talking a lot of weight. >> they're like 1,300-pound. >> reporter: this neighborhood is thankful for what didn't happen. >> it was a little too close for comfort. yes. it was. but thankfully nobody was hurt. >> reporter: alex demetrick, wjz news. >> you do have to count your blessings and be thankful for the fact that there was no loss of life. there were injuries a few but

nobody lost their lives and that certainly makes a big difference. we have had a lot of people who come up to us while we're out bernadette and i out here, they come to talk to us, they're waiting to talk to insurance adjustors and realizing there's still work to be done. >> i should say with the looks of it. thank you kai. log on to wjz.com. we're following breaking news right out of baltimore county. chopper13 at the scene where a child was struck by a car. police say the 8-year-old boy road his bike through a stop sign before he was hit. he is being transferred to the hospital, we're waiting to hear his condition. the pikesville county is in mourning after an 11-year-old boy was killed after getting his hands on a loaded gun. mike hellgren has the investigation and what his

family is saying tonight. >> reporter: vick the victim's family is still devastated. right now there are some differing accounts as to how this all unfolded but it does appear to be accidental. harry keal walks away tears while talking about the shooting that killed his 11- year-old grandson early saturday morning in hartford county. >> he was my number one 11-year- old. they like to play, him and olson they played everything together. it was just a freak thing that happened. >> reporter: according to the grandfather, zoek and his 8- year-old brother got a gun from the shed when the gun went off. >> the bullet hit the tree and come back and hit mickey. >> reporter: police say their investigation revealed something else. >> the 8-year-old accidentally shot the 11-year-old with a gun they found. >> reporter: the gun was in a shed that a neighbor opened so

they could get yard equipment. >> don't let this happen to anybody elses kids, please people. protect them. i want to love my kids not bury them. i cried all night long. i really did. >> reporter: police say there are no plans to file any charges in this case. >> reporter: and funeral services for zoek are scheduled for later this week. reporting live, mike hellgren. >> reporter: the family tells us they would like to thank the first responders. zoek died on the way to the medivac landing zone. mary bubala has the latest on a car accident investigation. >> reporter: police surround the school, one teen was reportedly cut behind the building on washington avenue. the victim suffered nonlife threatening injuries. so far there are no suspects.

>> thank you, mary. it happened at sully's seafood on bell air road today. police say they were called there for reports of a body found. the victim's name has not been released. anyone with information again urged to call police. scary moments for some elderly women. they wake up to find a man standing over their beds flashing a flashlight at their face. >> i was just amazed. >> reporter: 91-year-old ellis yolk woke up to a terrifying sight. >> reporter: what was the first sign you knew somebody was in your home. >> a light in my bedroom. he was standing beside my bed. >> reporter: was he shining it on you? >> uh-huh. >> reporter: minutes later he was gone. >> and i thought, i'm dreaming. you wake up and there's a light

shining in your face. you don't know. >> reporter: a 74-year-old woman woke up to a flashlight in her face. one man tried to grab her purse. she yelled and two robbers ran off. >> everybody should feel safe, secure and comfortable inside their home. >> reporter: anne arundel police now increasing patrol in their neighborhood. wjz spotted three police cars. >> we're asking people to be vigilant as always. look out for your neighbors if you see anything suspicious in nature, looks unusual report it. >> reporter: they're also asking neighbors to take precautions. >> we don't even -- we have an alarm system, we don't even turn it on. >> reporter: but you are now. >> i am now. >> reporter: unfortunately detectives do not have a very good description of the suspect. so anyone with information is urged to call anne arundel county police. in maryland city, adam may, wjz eyewitness news. neighbors tell wjz about other recent break-ins too.

police aren't sure how many could be connected. well, unless you're cleaning up from those tornadoes i think you would agree that it was a nice start to the workweek either way. what can you expect for the rest of the week? here's bob turk with the first warning weather forecast. >> if you liked today, you will likely like the next couple of days. slight chance of a shower, tonight up to our north there's some showers. right now there's one around the elkton area but there's another batch developing to our north. you see it up in northern pennsylvania. some of that might make it into our region later tonight. could be a little thunder and brief shower activity with that. and looks like we'll have the same pattern tomorrow, wednesday, maybe even thursday before it begins to finally wind down and warm up for the end of the week, vic. >> all right, bob. thank you. baltimore county prepares to install more speed cameras. the debate continues over the

reasons for these money making devices. >> reporter: goucher boulevard is one of the five new locations destined for new speed cameras. >> it really reminds people to slow down near schools. >> reporter: baltimore county executive kevin cammon says the cameras urge people to slow down. >> we can put a fake camera and a sign and get people to slow down. >> reporter: but instead they collect $40 a pop. >> i think it just collecting money for the state. >> i'm not from the area, i think it's unfair. how do i know it really works. >> i guess it's a necessary way to get revenue for the county. >> reporter: baltimore county expects the cameras to cost less than $1.1 million to operate. issue more than 50,000 citations and drivers to pay more than $1 million in fines. cammen says it's not about the

sandusky is charged with abusing eight boys through 15 years, sandusky denies the charges. the credibility of the accusers will be a critical issue throughout the trial. defense attorneys are expected to ask them about their motive for wanting to testify and about their recollection of what happened so many years ago. memory could also come into play for a key witness, former assistant coach mike mccreary. he was an assistant a decade ago when he says he saw sandusky sexually assault a young boy in a locker room shower.

he first testified it took place in march of 2002, now profession -- prosecutors say it's 2001. >> the jury is going to be asking himself, if mike mccreary is making up a story. could these other witnesses be making up a story as well. >> reporter: there will be no cameras in the courtroom. initially the judge was going to allow reporters to tweet during the trial. but on monday he banned all communication. 150 people could be questioned to find 12 jurors and 12 alternates. ray rice chooses a charity to support as part of a national competition sponsored by pop chips. marry -- mary has more information. >> reporter: ray rice chooses the living classroom's

foundation. city spring's football field in east baltimore is brand new and today it became a field of dreams for local students who got to meet, play and learn football from raven's running back ray rice. >> go in the corner, deep corner, deep corner this way. >> reporter: ray rice teamed up with pop chips and he chose the living classroom foundation. >> it's a real honor for living classrooms foundation that ray rice selected our organization to come and work with about 100 inner city children down in this new city springs field. we have the patterson park youth field. so these are two new sights for baltimore city children to have sports and athletics and physical education. >> reporter: students from the cross roads school along with five others ran drills with ray rice and listened to his story which is very much like their own. >> i think he motivates the kids that's out here that play

kai jackson and meteorologist bernadette woods live just outside bel air. the calm after the storm and bernadette what a storm it was. >> one of ten confirmed tornadoes on friday. but fortunately things calmed down. you saw a couple of thunderstorms we talked about but nothing like friday. >> reporter: we have a few showers developing to the north of us, nothing severe. but later this evening still could see a shower, maybe even some thunder later on tonight. take a look at temps. that's where the stuff is.

and it's moving, basically to the south and southeast. so we'll put that in the forecast, right now the chances aren't that great. we are at 71 right now. western areas only in the low 60s, 64 ocean city. dewpoint is pretty low at 49. a lot of cool air, 70 rock hall, 68 bell air. and all because of a block to our north, allowing the jet stream to come way down here across the carolinas. that's a lining this cool air coming from in canada. out west it's hot. later this week the jet stream will pull up to the north, it will begin to warm up and getting to the closer 80s by the second part of the weekend. northwest wind around the region. we still have a bit of a breeze, it'll calm down later on tonight. to the south of us, a boundary line between very warm summer weather and this cooler trend that surround our region. east of maine keeps spinning around creating a lot of clouds. you can see showers across new

york, new england. cold air coming in. and it reacts with the sun that's coming in. that's what causing these showers, a lot of in instability to the north. late tonight, 8: 8:00 9:00 to even mid-night may be a scattered shower. by the end of the week warm air begins to come in. friday looks like there probably won't be rainy. partly cloudy skies. above normal temps by saturday and sunday. northeast winds, gusting in the bay to 20 knots. the bay temp around 73 degrees. tonight still chance of a shower, maybe some thunder later on tonight. 55. tomorrow low 70s, kind of a cool day. 8degrees below average. with clouds in the afternoon could be a shower, maybe some thunder later on tonight in the day or evening on your tuesday. same thing for wednesday exactly. >> okay. >> okay, thank you bob.

afternoon not only where were there tornadoes. three teens are in good condition after being rescued from the anacasia river. the river rose to quickly as the storms hit many -- maryland. the three were able to grab on to a brick support. they were rescued using a system of ropes and pulllies that firefighters set up. >> there were branches and all that going through the water. >> reporter: so they couldn't have gotten themselves out? >> uh-uh. >> when they first got there the water started rise, there were 2 feet. >> reporter: bernadette woods is here, we get so obsessed with storms and winds and lightning, flooding is also a problem. >> it is our biggest weather killer around here.

we had almost 3-inches of rain in many locations that afternoon. as far as tornadoes go we're still about 10 confirmed tornadoes. you take a look at this map right here. they range across the state. from hartford county to prince george's county. we have two in carol county and three in montgomery county. there's even one on the eastern shore and queen anne's county. and one where the intensity has not been confirmed. but it is confirmed that a tornado touched down because it was spotted by a tower worker. so yes, across eight counties we have 10 confirmed tornado. >> we'll be covering as you can imagine bernadette, thank you very much. again a lot more work ahead. a lot more for homeowners and adjustors. >> stay with wjz for first warning weather coverage. to find forecast updates any

time log on to wjz.com. george zimmerman's attorney is taking the first step toward getting a new bond hearing if for his client. the court revoked the 28-year- olds bonds for lying about his financial circumstances. randall pinkston reports from central florida. >> reporter: his attorney says the 28-year-old needs to apologize for making a mistake. judge kenneth lester revoked zimmerman's bond after prosecutors showed his wife misled the court. she hid more than $120,000 raised online to defend her husband. >> i think the family made a mistake. i think it was out of fear and frustration. >> reporter: zimmerman is in a single cell, he will be here through his trial which is not

expected to start until sometime next year. hornsby is a private attorney, he says that the judge may want to send a message. >> i can see the judge sending the bond at half a million to a million dollars because he was not happy about the fact he was lied to so he's going to ensure this doesn't happen again. >> reporter: zimmerman was charged with second degree murder in the death of trayvon martin. the financial cover up complicates zimmerman's defense tragedy. >> under these circumstances, i think he's severely undermined his own credibility. >> reporter: randall pinkston wjz news. >> zimmerman pleaded not guilty saying he shot martin in self- defense during a confrontation in february. crews continue to search for bodies tonight after a deadly plane crash on nigeria's coast. more than 150 people are dead including some americans. mary is in the newsroom with more on what happened, mary. >> reporter: denise the plane

went down in a busy neighborhood. 153 people died in the crash yesterday. the state department now confirms there were u.s. citizens on board. their names have not been released yet. there's no word on how many there were. the plane took off from nigeria's capital. was approaching the lagos airport when it went down. pilots reported engine trouble moments before the plane hit the ground and burst into flames. >> the death toll on the ground will rise because the plane slammed into two large apartment buildings. two men are killed while fighting a wildfire near the utah-nevada border. the pilots say their planes went down after -- the cause of the crash still is under investigation. raising money, president oe what and his likely republican rival mitt romney focus on campaign funds. in tonight's campaign 2012 report, danielle nottingham
