potential jurors were brought in for questioning. judge john cleland told them they hold justice in their hands. >> he said he is trusting them at this point to act as jurors, not to read newspapers. >> reporter: many had worked at penn state or even volunteered at second mile, the charity for boys sandusky founded and where prosecutors say he met some of the victims. >> reporter: some 150 witnesses could testify during trial. the defense has indicated it may ask the wife and son of coach joe paterno to take the stand. >> reporter: prosecutors have indicated they might call mike mcqueary, his father and forger penn state officials. it was mcqueary who claimed he saw sandusky naked in a shower with a boy a decade ago. >> not to render an opinion until the case is heard and the state proves beyond a reasonable doubt. >> how are you doing. >> in the 68-year-old former

assistant coach, charged with 52 criminal counts, insists he's innocent. in belmont, manuel baleg us, wjz eyewitness news. >> and the judge is hoping to make opening statements on monday. breaking news from washington, where the white house confirms the death of al qaeda's number 2 man. a drone strike early this week in pakistan, killed abu ya ya allibi. pakistani officials say he was in the house targeted by u.s. officials. the u.s. says the drone campaign will continue. a baltimore county man convicted in his wife's murder, appeals his conviction in the precedent-setting case. denise is in the newsroom with the decision. denise? >> reporter: well, kai, the maryland court of special appeals says dennis tetso's murder charges stand. though tracy's body was never found, tracy was last seen on her way to a motley crue

concert. prosecutors used a security video of someone argumenting -- arming her car security system with her key to be. they argued successfully her husband was the only one to have that key to be. baltimore county state's attorney says everything that happened in the trial was correct. and the appeals firm approved the sentence. >> dennis tetso is currently serving 18 years in prison. baltimore police need your help to find who killed a popular restaurant owner. michael sullivan was found shot to death inside his business. sully seafood and subs yesterday morning. police have few leads and no suspects. anybody with information is urged to call metro crimestoppers. the number, 1-866-7-lockup. an unusual smell inside a holiday inn express leads to a meth lab. officers responded to a call and followed it to a room on the fourth floor in elkridge.

inside, they arrested five men from out of state. and with a search warrant, police also found heroin and a gun. all of the hotel rooms were evacuated while police removed the lab. it's one of the largest disciplinary actions the tsa has ever taken. 43 employees, including a top supervisor, are either fired or suspended. cheryl atkison reports for wjz, the security screeners failed to do their job. >> reporter: every day, nearly 2 millionaire travelers rely on the tsa to help keep the nation's sky safe. but last year, at southwest florida airport, at fort myers, officials say dozens of screeners failed to do their job. >> this is a big deal when five tsa screeners are fired and 38 are put on suspension, this is a huge deal. >> reporter: an internal investigation revealed that over a two-month period, 43 workers didn't perform required secondary checks on as many as 400 people after the passengers went through security.

>> the tsa themselves admit that this is an important part of the screening process. >> the punishments were handed down last friday. in a statement monday, the tsa said its disciplinary action reaffirms our strong commitment to the safety of the traveling public. but florida congressman john micah has written a letter to tsa agent john pistol, demanding more answers. >> if necessary, we'll subpoena the documents. and why it took a year to take disciplinary action against these people. >> reporter: this is just the latest embarrassment for the tsa. last year, 48 screeners in honolulu were either fired or suspended for improperly check checking bags. and newark, some were punished accused of stealing or sleeping on the job. and last week, a man boarded a flight without a ticket before getting caught.

it's 67 degrees and mostly cloudy in central maryland right now. the complete first warning weather forecast is coming up. an electric-powered lawn toy burst into flames in ohio with a 2-year-old riding on the back. a neighbor says he saw the child's father grab him from the burning toy and use a rug to extinguish his burning clothes. the boy was flown to a nearby hospital, suffering from burns on up to 75% of his body. investigators believe the battery in the toy started that fire. shocking video of a bus crash in indiana is educating other bus drivers on the dangers of not wearing a seat belt. watch as the man driving hits a bump in the road and is tossed out of his seat into the stairwell of the bus. look at that accident. he barely holds onto the steering wheel. and he crashes into a home. thankfully no one else was on board. the driver was cited for not wearing a seat belt. >> wow. just minutes ago, a celestial event began that won't be seen again for another

century. alex demetrick reports, the transit of venus became visible in hawaii at 4:00 p.m., and is headed east towards us. like a table full of pool balls in motion, the transit in venus is the ultimate trick shot. it passes between us and the sun twice every 100 years or so. >> it's fairly rare because the orbit is tilted, kind of relative to earth's orbit. so this will be in perfect alignment. >> reporter: it's so rare, it wasn't seen until 1639. and that put into motion a transit. using it to make a crucial measurement. >> you can use the transit to figure out that this would frame the sun and the earth. and that was like the holy grail. >> among others, mason and dixon went to south africa. and went to triangalate that -- triangulate the distance for the first time. the sun back-lighting it like

really a nice day out there. >> it is. >> i like this kind of weather. >> it's cool. for june, it's so cool. >> yes, it was. and we started out with sunshine. just a gorgeous start to the day. clouds leveled up in the afternoon. there's still a chance for a shower or two to come out of those clouds. but it's capping that temperature, close to 70 degrees. and in some cases, not even getting to 70. this is what we have been seeing. as far as this forecast goes, it's giving a moment here. what is going to happen is that we have the sunshine giving way to those building clouds. and as that happens, it could give way to a shower or thunderstorm. today, we're not seeing as much out of that. but we have the past few days. and while we're locked in this weather pattern that, is going to continue. at least that threat. the winds are out of the northeast. and that is keeping the cooler, dryer air in place. 45 degrees is our dew point. that's how dry this air is on top of us. and look at those air temperatures. across the entire map right now, we are in the 60s.

we'll take you in a little closer and show you that even for baltimore, 67 degrees. just along the water, 69 for rock hall, annapolis, and kent island. so our overall pattern, keeps us below average. and that average has now topped 80 degrees. so far today, we have only gotten to 68 after starting out in the 50s and tonight, we're going lower than that. the clouds will start to break up tonight. but tomorrow, we're going to do it all over again. clouds building up. clouds head for a shower in the afternoon. and we are still in for the same weather pattern through thursday. and it locks all of the cool air on top of us. temperatures probably a few degrees higher tomorrow. but the idea is still running below average. until we hit the weekend. because we have a big-time warmup headed our way just in time for the weekend. here's one front to the south. another coming down from the north tomorrow. keeping the cool air around. keeping the chances of scattered showers and thunderstorms around. and that trend does not break until friday. out on the water, bay temp, 72 degrees. that is warmer than our air

challenged by milwaukee's democratic mayor, tom barrett. the campaign began more than a year ago, after walker stripped most public employees of their collective bargaining rights. walker and others face recall votes. the head of florida a&m university proposes sweeping changes for the school's named marching bands. kai has more on the new requirements that could soon take effect. >> reporter: in the wake of the hazing death of drum major robert champion, ammons will present his findings this week. he wants to limit marching band to only full-time students, limiting their time with the band for only four years. amon suspended the band. 11 people have been charged with felony hazing in that case. two others face misdemeanor charges. >> last month, ammons announced the ban will remain off the field until at least fall 2013. caught on camera. a california mother is caught

[ bleep ] >> duran said the fight last body 90 seconds, until a family friend saw what was happening and broke up the brawl. >> brought her daughter, fully greased up, with vaseline on her face and arms to get her, and beat her and rip her clothes off, which she did. she managed to tear the shirt to where thigh my daughter's breast came out.

several charges. a bizarre attack at an anne arundel county construction site, leaves one man with possible life-threatening injuries. police say 41-year-old guillermo lopez molina shot has coworker. lopez-molina was arrested and charged with first- and second- degree assault, as well as reckless endangerment. he remains behind bars this afternoon. no word on the victim's condition. the fight to legalize same- sex marriage in california intensifies today. following a decision from the appeals court. >> sponsors of california's same-sex marriage ban, known as proposition 8, are now planning to take their case all the way to the u.s. supreme court. a federal appeals court refused to consider or reconsider an earlier ruling that found the voter-approved ban unconstitutional. the court found proposition 8 to be a violation of the civil rights of gays and less bi-- lesbians in california. and despite the ruling, same-

sex couples will not ba -- be allowed to marry immediately. >> if the supreme court decides to take up the legal battle, arguments could come as early as next year. in today's wjz healthwatch, combatting childhood obesity. disney announces a crackcounsel on junk food-- crackdown on junk food 5ds and get -- ads and getting approval from the white house. >> reporter: first lady michelle obama had a warm greeting for the newest partner in her campaign against obesity. >> this new initiative is truly a game changer for the health of our children. woman has confessed to taking part in the 1995 attacks while she was part of a religious cult. police say the group targeted five trains, killing 12 people, and sickening thousands. the cult's leader and followers were all given death sentences for the attack. a peruvian court has cleared the way for jor an vander van der sloot to be extradited to the u.s. but he will first have to finish serving a 28-year sentence. van der sloot is facing charges in connection with the disappearance of natalee holloway. and prosecutors want him to stand trial in the u.s. holloway disappeared in aruba in 2005. the man accused of killing himself committing a gruesome murder could be back in canada in a week. mary has more. >> reporter: we want to warn everybody at home. the details of the story are very graphic. luca minatta will not fight extradition back to canada.

that's where he's accused of recording himself stabbing someone to death and dismembering the body. he allegedly sent body parts in the mail. in a video online, he also seemed to eat parts of the remain. s. after the gruesome crime, he -- fled to germany. >> he will have to go before a german court for an extradition hearing, once canada formally requests that he be returned for trial. a traveler finds an unusual note inside her bag. christine sloan has the story. where's what happened here at newark liberty international airport has passengers talking. >> this is a personal choice of everybody. >> reporter: a female traveler, who identifies herself as jill filopovick, says a transportation security administration screener placed this note, written on a tsa notice, in her suitcase, after finding an adult toy in her bag. the note said, get your freak on, girl.

sleepy driver is behind a bus crash in new york. last march, the new york-bound fur bus was on i-95, returning to new york, going 78 in a 50- mile-per-hour zone. the bus ran off the road, toppled over, and crashed, killing 50 people. the driver is pleading not guilty to manslaughter and charges of negligent homicide. blaze is already consumed a couple hundred acres in larimer county. and the northern part of the state. it is spreading completely unchoked -- unchecked. firefighters are helping to bring the flames under control. no injuries have been reported. and it's unclear how the fire started. a hiker is lucky to be alive, after she loses her footing and falls more than 100 feet off a cliff. rachel kim has the story. >> reporter: rescuers signal to air-lift a hiker who fell 100 feet from the edge of a waterfall in eaton cannon. >> we heard that there was a

second waterfall, a little higher up that you have to hike up to. and we went up and it was great. >> reporter: he tells us, he and his 25-year-old girlfriend were hiking, exploring the two waterfalls. after taking in the second one, trouble. >> we were coming down. and there's not exactly -- the trail isn't really distinct. it's kind of hard to figure out how to get down. and we went the wrong way. so we kind of just went with it. and she slipped and fell. >> reporter: reese said he scrambled down as quickly and safely as he could. he finally reached his girlfriend. >> when i got down, she seemed pretty conscious. and she was answering all of the questions i asked her. >> reporter: rescuers arrived, hoisted up the woman, wrapped securely. she had scratches and complained of back pain. >> we have rescues probably three or four a month at this location. >> reporter: fire officials tell us this is a typical scene for them. 60 hiker his to be rescued in the past year. two died in the eaton canyon
